The pictures in this book are beautiful, but there's no text with them. One of the things I enjoy about the 'Art of...' books is getting a peak into the design process. There was none of that in this book.

My recommendation would be to get this fro a library and not spend your money on it.

*Thank you to Chronicle Books for providing a copy for me to review.*

The Art of Soul begins with a lovely forward by Tina Fey who explains why she chose to participate in the movie. Referencing the movie Up, she says that the movies are similar in the way it makes you feel something. Getting down to the basics, SOUL is about finding your passion but also practicing gratitude. The Art of Soul focuses on the animation and art creation process with pages filled with beautiful illustrations that are both pencil sketches and digital renderings.

The book devotes several pages on the development of the Souls in the Great Before. In the Introduction, director Pete Doctor mentions how the researchers spoke with religious experts to develop the look. The book adds notes to some of the illustrations including how the goal was to capture the essence of a person. The final look of the Souls was the designers interpretation of light as it passes through a prism.

The Art of Soul has a beautiful cover which mimics the cotton candy colors of the Great Before. The images are printed on thick paper and they are all very crisp and clear. My only minor criticism is that I would have loved to see some behind the scenes photos of maybe the art process or the musicians creating the soundtrack but those missing things don’t take away from this beautiful book. The Art of Soul would be an interesting and unique gift for the Pixar fan!

I enjoyed this artbook because of all the concept art they included and the thoughts of the actors and artists. It seems that Pixar took an unconventional approach to make this film and I really appreciate that. For example, I loved seeing the wire sculptures for the Jerry and Terry characters. The book includes a lot of concept ideas for immaterial concepts and spiritual ideas.

I wish it had more storyboards! But I know that these US animation art books typically don't include many boards. Just a lil' gripe from a storyboard artist.

I wouldn't recommend this book to everyone. I think if you are looking for inspiration to create a cityscape like New York, Soul doesn't really have anything unique to offer. However, if you are interested in exploring visual depictions of the metaphysical then I think this book would serve you well for inspiration.

A beautiful book package to present art from a very beautiful movie. As with The Art of Inside Out, I'd love to frame some of these pages and put them on my wall - of course they get around this a lot of the time by posting the juiciest art as a spread over 1.5 pages, so that a simple extraction is impossible. Classic Disney.

An inside look at the animation Soul. Love the digital portraits of jazz legends Fitzgerald, Holiday, and Armstrong.
