To you and me, a tree hollow is just a hole, cavity or tunnel in a tree or branch. But to an animal, that hollow may be a bedroom, hiding place, nursery or shelter. It is the ultimate tree house!
Come and take a peek inside the amazing world of tree hollows and discover more than 340 species of incredible Australian animals that call hollows home. With color photos of glorious gliders, darting dunnarts, minute microbats and many more, this book is full of fun facts about animals that use tree hollows as places for resting, nesting or hiding.
Find out how hollows are created, why they are threatened, and meet scientists who spend their time hollow-hunting. There are also plenty of tips on how you can spot hollows yourself, help to protect the environment and encourage habitat for hollow-dependent animals.

‘A Hollow is a Home’, written by Abbie Mitchell and illustrated by Astred Hicks, targets young and adolescent readers with a fascinating and unique examination of hollow-dependent wildlife another fantastic contribution from CSIRO Publishing!
With a strong environmental theme on the importance of tree hollows in the ecosystem the book incorporates a range of content, some as asides rather than presenting information in linear and repetitive structures. I rather like this as it extends the book to both general interest as well as research support for subject related studies. There is a wealth of information about trees - their structure, parts, characteristics, stand alone and in forests. This is expanded with details of the animals using Australian trees and choosing hollows to live in - the diagram showing the range of different animals is amazing! The impact of habitat loss - through human and natural events is covered. This provides detailed but accessible information on the importance of trees and the wildlife that relies on them for a healthy ecosystem. Lots of practical guides are included - such as identifying animals may be using a hollow as a home and calculating the size and number of hollows present according to the height and circumference of the tree. Information for building replacement hollows (nesting boxes), a list of animals that live in hollows and glossary add to this quality production.

A detailed exploration of the importance of hollow trees as animal habitats. It looks at various issues, the many types of animals that use hollows, hollow alternatives, scientists who specialise in this area etc. The picture book The Hollow Tree would make an excellent accompaniment to this book.
An excellent mid-grade nonfiction information book about tree hollows, covering all kinds, shapes, ages, inhabitants and more. Really well researched and entertainingly presented with varied text features and photos. I loved the local (Aussie) researchers section too - very inspiring for young audiences.
Loved this ... makes me want to go bush walking with my binoculars to find tree hollows and it give me the tools to know what to look for. I read it front to back without wanting to skip a bit because there was so much to learn.
