What Echoes Render

Rate this book
Betrayal was something Jesse Baker thought she already knew too much about. But when her dead husband’s past comes back to haunt her, both the life she’s built for herself and her sons and the story she’s told herself to make it through threaten to crumble into ashes.

Fire and ashes are David Hathaway’s life. Since sending his daughter to college, his time is his own and the arson investigator intends to make the most of having no one to look after but himself. That is, until he meets Jesse and an explosion nearly takes her life, changing his forever.

Echoes from their pasts follow them both. And they know those memories, like fire, can give life just as easily as they can destroy it. But before Jesse and David can decide for themselves how their histories will influence their future, they must first stop a killer intent on making Jesse burn for the sins of others.

Tamsen Schultz is the author of several romantic suspense novels and American Kin (a short story published in Line Zero Magazine). In addition to being a writer, she has a background in the field of international conflict resolution, has co-founded a non-profit, and currently works in corporate America. Like most lawyers, she spends a disproportionate amount of time thinking (and writing) about what it might be like to do something else. She lives in Northern California in a house full of males including her husband, two sons, three cats, a dog, and a gender-neutral, but well-stocked, wine rack.

This is a well-written, romantic suspense novel with compelling, likable characters and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the end. This wonderful addition to Ms. Schultz's Windsor series is fast paced and a real page turner. I am already reading the next book in the series, and look forward to reading all of the entries in this series.

At least 4.75 stars, so easy to round up to 5 stars.

I received this book from the author in exchange for my honest review.

I think this is the third of Tamsen Schultz's books I've had the pleasure to read, and I count myself officially as a fan of her writing. Although this book is the third in a series, it can be read on its own. If you believe all the good reviews I've seen just this week, you'll probably want to start with the first book in order to gain just that much more appreciation for how the characters interact and develop.

The heroine in this book is a widowed mother of two teenage boys, a hospital administrator, and a genuinely nice woman. The hero is a single dad of a college-age daughter, a firefighter and fire inspector. They first meet at the hospital when a high-school boy is brought in with severe burns from an explosion in his home. I would like to have had more of the story of this young man, but perhaps he'll return in a future book.

David (the fire inspector) is attracted to Jesse the first time they meet, but each of them has a reason not to act on any attraction such as this. Shortly after their encounter, Jesse begins to experience a progression of attacks that are serious enough to warrant investigation into possible motives, and her law-enforcement, and other, friends bring their expertise to the difficult search. David is called to examine a fire in a shop where Jesse had an appointment to pick up a gift to mail to her parents, and the plot thickens.

I do not wish to give away any hint of spoilers, so I will stop here with respect to the story in WHAT ECHOES RENDER. For readers who wish to know, there are scenes of intimacy between Jesse and David, but they are tastefully done, in my opinion.

For whatever reason, I was able to suss out the culprit early on in the story, which I am not usually able to claim. This did not interfere with reading the developing story or with my enjoyment of the book. It was very late before I put the book down, which is often the case between me and a good read!

I heartily recommend this romantic suspense novel as one of the best written books in this genre. I plan to read anything else Tamsen Schultz writes, and the quality both of her writing and the stories she tells puts me in anticipation as I await the next book in this series.

WHAT ECHOES RENDER A Windsor Series Novel by Tamsen Schultz:

This is Schultz’s third book of her romantic Mystery Windsor Series. Schultz takes her readers on a wild ride of suspense, thrills and intrigue, in WHAT ECHOES RENDER, Tamsen features Jesse Baker, Riverside Hospital’s administrator. Schultz keeps her readers on edge and unprepared for what they will find on the next page.

As in the first two Schultz books, A TAINTED MIND and THESE SHADOWS WE SEE, her stories main character is part of the Windsor community. Schultz is a master at keeping her readers aware of the all the main characters of the Windsor Series. Jesse Baker is close friends with key characters of Dr. Vivienne DeMarco, Sheriff Ian MacAllister , Matty Brooks, Dr. Dash Rains, Kit Forester, Kit's brother Caleb, and Vivienne's cousins Naomi and Brian.

Jesse Baker is administrator of Riverside Hospital in the small community of Riverside, a short distance from the even smaller community of Windsor. Schultz starts building her story introducing David Hathaway, an arson investigator who is investigating a fire and bomb explosion that caused the death of one and severely injuring Aaron Greene. Aaron is the son of the person killed in the blast.

One thing I enjoy is how Schultz has continued the reader’s education of the various characters. All of the key characters in the series play some role in the mystery that is the focus of Hathaway’s investigation. As the story progresses, Schultz’s character development illustrates to the reader the importance of each characters back story. The key players are all connected just as in many small towns across the country. In communities like Windsor and Riverside everyone knows everyone.

Both Sheriff Ian MacAllister and Medical Examiner, Dr. Vivienne DeMarco are an important part of Hathaway’s investigation of the explosion, fire and death of Aaron Greene’s father. Schultz informs her readers about the law enforcement backgrounds of Ian and Vivienne who are married. MacAllister and DeMarco are a good team bringing the Sheriff’s office together with the Medical Examiner. Dr. DeMarco is also a respected FBI consultant and profiler. Schultz lets her readers know both MacAllister and DeMarco will play an important role in supporting Hathaway in his investigation.

The pace of the story builds as Hathaway and Baker keep getting thrown together in events affecting Jesse Baker and her safety. Events keep occurring in Baker’s life convincing Hathaway someone is out to hurt her. Hathaway’s interest in Baker is not totally professional and Schultz is a master at planting seeds of romance into her stories. We find ourselves pulling for Jesse Baker and David Hathaway and their families. Hathaway’s investigation uncovers new mysteries totally unraveling Jesse Baker’s understanding of her past.

Each time the reader turns a page, Schultz moves deeper into the life of Jesse Baker. It becomes apparent it is going to take all of Jesse Baker’s friends, old and new, to figure out who has a motive to kill Baker. It even takes friends and relatives of some of the key players to step up and keep Jesse and her family safe. The intrigue in Schultz’s story keeps readers on pins and needles trying to figure out what the hints and clues mean. The story is full of surprises and no one has any idea as to what is going to happen. Schultz keeps us guessing until the very last page regarding who was responsible and what happens. I am happy to recommend this book with a 5 star ranking and a must read.

All I can say is it is official I am a fan of Tamsen Schultz. I remember her first book I read and I did not know what to think about it. I tore that book apart and now her writing is awesome. She has found her voice, her niche and frankly I can't get enough and I am so glad I did not give up on this woman or this series because I really would have missed out.
I loved this book from start to finish. I had no idea where the story was going and I really did not care it was that good. I was so wrapped up in what was going on I did not want it to end and that is very rare for me. I could go on forever but I hate spoilers so all I am going to say is bravo Tamsen Schultz your fourth book was brilliant and I can't wait to see you have coming up next because you can only get better and that should scare some of those authors sitting on the top of the Best Seller's List.

This is the 3rd book in the Windsor series and it is excellent! Tamsen Schultz once again delivered a well-written, romantic suspense blend. Her characters are extremely well done and it was great to see more of the characters from the first 2 books. The plot was well thought out and well paced. I particularly liked the relationship between the heroine and her 2 teen-age sons. It was nice to see a family where the teens were well-behaved, trustworthy and had a good rapport with their mom (like many of the teens I know in real life) rather than being smart-mouthed and rebellious. I thought the romance between the 2 main characters was very believable and true-to-life for people from their backgrounds. The suspense was great. I continue to love this series and can't wait for the next one. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I stumbled upon Tamsen Schultz last year and fell in love with the Windsor series! The writing is excellent and the characters well-developed. I will not give away the plot - enough has been written about that - but believe me when I say you will be keeping your fingers crossed for Jesse and David. I love that characters from the prior books do make appearances; Viv and Ian, from the first book, are involved with the "working the case" here. This author is getting stronger and stronger with every book - I cannot await the next one!

I received this book free for an honest review and now I am hooked. I enjoyed this one so much, I didn't realize it was the 3rd book in the Windsor series, I now need to read the other ones. It is a nice fast read, with alot of ups and downs that keep you guessing. The characters are wonderful and pull at your heart strings. I can't wait to start the next one!

Have really enjoyed this series by Schultz. Love a good mystery and this one was captivating from the get go. The cast of characters become familiar and are part of what is compelling about reading books in a series.
Would recommend this to mystery and romance fans.

Another great book by Tamsen Schultz. The town of Windsor has another mystery to ponder and solve. The book keeps you turning the pages and really grabs your attention. Kept me guessing until the end. Who can you Jesse trust? Who is out to Jesse harm? Can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

This was the first book I read from this author and I wasn’t disappointed.

Agreed, this was a slow burner and I’ll also agree that the plot was slightly predictable or that there were no twist or turns to pepper up the storyline. In any case, I believe that the strength of this book lay elsewhere. Namely in the very realistic description of the budding relationship between two experienced adults and their cautious steps towards the second chance at love. And this thread of the plot was handled masterly! David and Jesse approached the possibility of a new relationship very carefully and even more carefully explained their expectations and fears to each other. At the beginning of their interactions they both processed their previous relationships and tried to gain positives from their past experiences, which they could bring into the new partnership. Both of them had children from their previous marriages and it was interesting to see how they handled this aspect and how this impacted the new relationship. All these bits and pieces needed to be elaborated first and only then could they create the backstage against which the suspense romance could unfold, which is why the book was slowly paced. The suspense and romance parts of the book were great bonus material and framed the book nicely. I thought it was very interesting and rewarding to gain insight into Jesse’s and David’s way of thinking and to accompany them through ups and downs util the HEA.

A very nice read!

My reviews will be boring. I just can't get enough of the Windsor Series! They keep you on edge every single time.

If this is the first one you see, please consider part one first so you get a feel for the characters. You don't really have to read them in order as each story is one of its own, but you'll just get the dynamics more.

After the first two books, I again couldn't put it down! It kept me on edge. You don't know whodoneit until the very end. I love that. When the story goes on and you are so captivated that you think oh it's him/her, no? oh it must be him/her then! No? Ohhhhh it's that person! This is another hit! If you like suspense, murder mystery, thriller, detective, this is really the book for you! I'm so happy I found out that there are (many) more in the series, so I'm off to read part 4!!! Thank you Tamsen Schultz for writing such an awesome story and for making sure there will be more to come!

This book is about a widowed hospital administrator named Jesse with two teenage sons who meets and falls in love with an arson investigator named David. There are mysterious attacks on Jesse at the beginning of the book which really get the reader hooked in to the story. And the attacks just keep coming! Which KEEP the reader interested in finding out what is going on. Gradually, the reader also finds out more about Jesse's dead husband, who died in a fire as it turns out. There is plenty of excitement and I have to say that I usually find sections of books that I skim through in order to save time but the characters and story are so interesting that I found myself reading every single word, all the way to the HEA. I highly recommend this book!

I was given a copy by the author in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very well written romantic suspense. I love a romance that throws in suspense and action, this one did not let me down. The characters were very well developed and the story line was a believable one. The relationship that developed between the two was also believable, it portrayed what a real life couple would go through with the same backgrounds. I look forward to reading more of this author's work.

I didn’t think it possible but this book is even better than book 1 and 2. I am still flashed!
This book has definitely more suspense than romance in it, even though romance isn’t lacking at all. Right from the start I felt the need to just keep on reading chapter by chapter. When I’ve finished about the half, it was like my eyes and mind started racing over the pages to soak everything in. I stayed up way too late last night to finish it. I just couldn’t put it down.
Tamsen is a genius in character development. I just love all of them. If it wasn’t for the murders, I’d love to move to Windsor, buy me one of those dream houses and be friends with Jesse, David, Vivi, Ian and Co.

I can't get enough of this author. The story, the writing, the characters all flows so easily in the mind. It starts with Jesse who runs the local hospital, meeting David who investigates fires and also works part time at the local fire station. As they learn more about each other and spend time with friends, the attraction between them develops. This romantic mystery follows so many threads, ideas and thoughts but it flows smoothly without using major flashbacks or jumping about from one idea to the next.

What Echoes Render

Very interesting and entertaining storyline about an arson investigator and a hospital administrator, both single and both with teenage children. They find themselves in a relationship that has to survive several attempts on her life and raises suspicion that someone from one of their past is probably stalking her. Romance and stress, not a good combination. Can their relationship survive ?

Fire

David is a fire investigator, but I'm talking about the attraction between he and Jessie, the hospital administrator. You will be drawn in to their immediate attraction, but more than that, their serious desire to protect each other from the string of life threatening events that suddenly plague their lives!

Loved it

Loved every page. I laughed, cried and chewed by thumb nail throughout the entire book. Who did it? Why would they do it? Happy endings are lovely. Can not wait to read Kit’s book next. Hope we get to find out more on Caleb. As always keep writing and I will keep reading. Thank you.

Fantastic book. Jesse was such a good woman, she didn't deserve what her husband put her through. Despite that, she made an amazing life for herself and her sons. And David, good man, I loved him. I admit that I thought that the stalker was someone else but I had a feeling the little girl would be connected and I was right on that

When accidents start happening to Jesse after a explosion that has injured a teenager and a fire investigator named David comes to see the boy. He is concerned for her. Things don't add up. As they search for whoever is doing this they are drawn to each other.
