Chloé and JJ are my favourite side characters now omg, the volume left on a cliffhanger too ahhh! Also the August backstory is incredible omg, the way his motivations used to be just like Noé’s it’s wow
These snow globes (artwork at the start of each chapter) are so cute! I want one!!
The backstory of Chloé wasn't that interesting at first, but the ending of chapter 31 got me.
Found it facinating that apparently most archivist have light hair and a light brown tone.
The beast really looks sick! Know we saw it already in the last volume but personally I think we got a better sight of it for this volume.
Even though the backstory was cool, it was almost only about that in this volume as the next fighting scene was cut off right at the end of this volume. As much as I like to get a deeper insight from a character I was still hoping for a bit of showing stuff (action, fights, etc.)
Pre-review: in this volume, we have a story about vampires and the MCs' visit to a supposedly cursed 'Castle of the Witch', it is highly interesting, but after watching the anime adaptation, I found the narrative to be too annoying. Although I like the beautiful artwork and the setting very much , I am still not much of a fan of Jun Mochizuki's style of storytelling and her characters.............I don't think I can continue at this stage. *sighs*
Sadly least favorite vol so far. I'm just not a fan of the "the oldest and most powerful being of our kind is a loli" trope, so while I acknowledge the vol was important for the overall plot, I couldn't care less for Chloé and her story.

4.5/5 Noé is in Chloé and Jean-Jacques’ home. At first, these powerful vampires who were hidden in the woods seem to be a threat, but later on, Noé knows about their past and how the Beast of Gévaudan was created.
Apparently, Chloé’s dad wanted to find a cure to her vampirism but the years went by and she didn’t change at all. Fortunately, her relatives or rather, future generations of her family, kept searching for a way to treat it.
Meanwhile, a young August Ruthven becomes friends with Chloé (thanks to him she also meets little Jeanne) but since the vampires and the humans are fighting against each other, he gets injured and then what seemed like a beautiful, nursing friendship, ends abruptly.
Therefore, Chloé became a Curse bearer on her own and Jean-Jacques too, remained by her side. Now, Astolfo, Jeanne and the others are looking for them and a fight is yet to be had.
Now, this is my fav volume of the series so far. It’s slowly making sense of what happened with some vampires and the human world. I feel sorry for Lord Ruthven ‘cause he seemed like a nice person who got unfairly attacked. On the other hand, I liked that Vanitas actually cared for Noé, though he will never admit it. Guess you can say I can’t wait to read the next volume!
Noe is separated from the group and learns the tragic tale of Chloe, the “silver witch.” A vampire stuck in the shape of a young child*, she has been living in the gilded cage of her family’s estate, hidden away from the world, for centuries. As her family died off, she was left with only her retainer, Jean Jacques, to help her carry on her research into the equations that can alter the laws of physics – creating what we know as magic, including vampires. In her loneliness, she began to listen to the shadowy creature that offered to grant her wish in exchange for her name… The castle she lives in is very creepy, and not just because of the shadow monster and the musical-instrument automaton people. The intro scene where Noe wakes up to this apparent little kid drinking his blood without permission, after someone has apparently stolen his clothes…well, uh, it isn’t as bad as if their positions were reversed, but yeah – I’d be upset too! Noe, though, is far too good-natured and forgiving. Which is probably why Vanitas is keen to go rescue him…not that he’ll admit to anyone that that’s why he is in such a hurry to get to the castle! Of course, his book is also in there…
*I don’t understand this detail. All the OTHER vampires seem to age into normal adulthood. I think it might be because she is old enough that she’s one of the humans who got “re-written” into a vampire, instead of being BORN a vampire like Noe or Dominique.
It’s so good to have poor memory, big reveals of this volume were still surprising even though I’ve read this vol. the second time. —— another great installment in the series.
Five freakin stars. This volume was everything. I loved learning more about Chloe and Jean and Jeanne’s involvement with Chloe. Next volume should be lit honestly now that a lot came to light. 😍
Mình chợt phát hiện, cứ mỗi nhân vật ban đầu trông có vẻ xấu xa thì cuối cùng đều được hé lộ một quá khứ bi thương và đầy mất mát. Sau cùng thì có lẽ những cảm xúc mãnh liệt nhất như thù hận có thể biến một người trở nên phi thường hoặc lụi tàn, phi thường theo kiểu nào thì chính họ là người lựa chọn rồi ;_;
i absolutly adore chloé and jean jacques, i already did in the anime and i love seeing more of them. vanitas and noé stay being gay and the urge to write an essay about them is getting bigger and bigger
I continue to enjoy the art as well as the story in this one. I have become so attached to the characters that I continue to enjoy it. It's darker than I would normally pick up, but man I love it a whole lot.
okay, so i *may* have cheated on this volume with the anime, by watching the episodes first before reading. but! i absolutely loved this volume as we delved into the d’apchier’s history and the story of the hidden vampire, a young girl named chloe, known in folklore as the silver witch.
having watched the show first and the way they ordered it, reading this volume was like expanding upon what i already knew. there were a few scenes in this volume that didn’t make it into the show & i felt like i had a few OH! moments that gave explanation to scenes in the show that confused me.
overall i am increasingly impressed by jun mochizuki’s ability to write such compelling characters! i love our protagonists, noé and vanitas, but i also find myself enjoying the antagonists as well. it takes a skilled author to write complex characters, ones that are likable even when they are villains in a story arc.
with that said! i’m a sucker for the ball of teenage rage that is astolfo and i want only good things for him.
In this volume we fully meet the mysterious people from the previous volume that took Noé.
There's a really gross scene of Noé getting literally assaulted and drank from without his consent and it gave me a stomach ache, it was so icky.
At first I was like, wow I really don't give a single fuck about either of these people as we are getting Chloé's entire life story but eventually I was locked in. Her story with Jean Jacques, along with her friendship with August Ruthven was utterly fascinating and so atmospheric.
I feel like I am finally understanding a bit of the lore but then we get musical instruments automation hybrids, a machine experiment to change the world formula, and talking about a repeating pocket world in an alternate past and then I'm going HUH? Very creative I must say. I can truly say I've never seen anything like this.
Vanitas being super worried about Noé but not wanting to say it is so precious.😭 Noé himself is so precious I can't. He's so hot and babygirl at the same time, it's like he was made for me to fangirl over.
This volume focuses primarily on the consequences of the battle with the Beast of Gevaudan. We're given more to Chloe's back story as the hidden vampire and why she became a curse bearer...voluntarily! All this we find out because Noe has been taken back to the D'apchier house by Chloe and Jean-Jacques.
Vanitas, after being injured in the previous volume is being cared for by Jeanne. To raise his body temp that had become dangerously low she tries skin to skin contact. Something that really flusters her but the following day Vanitas, now recovered, seems downright cold and unaffected. I keep thinking I know how their relationship is going to go but with each volume, they throw a curveball in.
It seems that Noe has some kind of history with Naenia, the demon shadow thing that took Chloe's true name. It has something to do with Louis, Noe and Domi's childhood friend.
I really loved this volume. I loved reading about Chloe's backstory and how she was basically created and was born a vampire. I find it incredibly depressing how she was hidden from the rest of her family, and she kept getting promises that someone would help her become a human, the first promise of that coming from her own father, but unfortunately that never came to be. Chloe never really said if she even wanted to be a human, so I don't really know if she'd rather be a human than a vampire.
One thing I'm proud of Chloe for is when she stood up for herself when Ruthven bit her and tried to manipulate her by placing a curse on her. The same curse he used on Noe...but luckily Chloe stopped him (I think she was successful in stopping him). Also, I love Jean-Jacques and how he and Chloe met. It is a little weird how Chloe is technically way older than she looks, but even if the age gap between them is pretty big, I still like their friendship dynamic.

I really enjoy this story but some of the specific details do get a bit lost since I often have a long wait between volumes. I bought Vol 5 in March of last year (it was maybe a couple months out) and Vol 6 wasn’t in stock here in Sweden until January of this year. Eventually I’ll reread them all in one go or if I get too lost, I’ll just flip back through the past volumes.
Either way, I really enjoy Jun Mochizuki’s art style and her way of telling a story! In general, the story takes place in a steampunk Paris and as the description for Vol 1 says, it is a whimsical and dark steampunk Paris. If any of that sounds interesting, I’d say give it a go!
It’s hard to say too much about this volume without spoiling previous volumes, but the short version is in this volume the group is off on a tangent and we get a bit more backstory about one of the more important side characters!
