Boken är lite torr i början, men blir lite mer personlig i andra halvan.
Lite tragiskt överraskande moment var ännu en förföljelse av judar - känns som varje gång när folk genom mänsklighetens historia letade syndabockar så har judar blivit utpekade som skyldiga.

En överraskande tråkig bok. Faktauppgifter staplas på hög. Harrison är inte intresserad av före eller efter, tex hur återhämtade sig samhället, byarna, ekonomin etc efter att ungefär halva befolkningen dött. Lite mer historiesociologi hade inte skadat.

Much can be said about the hideous disease that killed more than half of the European population. It has been the inspiration of poetry, novels, movies, and god knows what else. Few plagues have been more devastating than the one caused by the Yersinia Pestis-bacteria, the disease most of us know as the black death. This is the subject of Dick Harrison’s book ”Digerdöden”, and it’s an informative read for sure.
It’s a short one, less than 200 pages, and the author covers the essentials of the black death. We learn about its possible origins, how it spread to different parts of the world and when, how it affected culture, economics, health, and how people reacted to the pandemic. For one who knew next to nothing on the subject, it’s well educating. Most people probably know that huge numbers of people met their maker in the face of the pestilence. What is not as evident at a first glance is how it affected the world in which people lived.
Reading it while the corona virus is spreading may not have been the best idea I’ve ever had. On the contrary, it does make one think. In those days, there weren’t a lot of science around, so people believed that the black death was the wrath of an angry god. The remedies they came up with were nothing short of ridiculous. They really had no clue, and even went so far as to blame it on the Jews. How typical, right? If nothing else works, you can always blame it on the Jews. Or as people are more and more inclined to do in present day Sweden: the Russians.
Death was personified much as a result of the plague. A plethora of art has been inspired by it, danse macabre paintings being mentioned. What we can see when we read about the disease is how everyone, and I mean everyone is equal in the face of death. Death does not discriminate between caste, gender, race, or religion. Jew, Christian, Muslim, atheist, you’re still least the bit as vulnerable as anyone else.
The middle ages saw the population detoriating into complete hysteria. Some say that things aren’t all that different today. I can see the point to some extent, but today we don’t bury children alive when they’re sick. We go see a doctor instead of reading the Quran or the Bible, and salvation comes in the form of chemicals. We can think rationally, at least on some level. Everyone is updated within a few seconds thanks to the digital revolution and the internet. So we’ve come a long way.
Digerdöden is food for thought, and it’s informative. A good read for anyone who wishes to gain some knowledge about one of the most influential phenomena mankind has ever witnessed. Great for a friendly discussion at work, or any other social setting about to get demolished by your apocalyptic sermon of doom. Pretty metal.

Trevlig bok.
Dock inte så trevligt med antisemitism och barn som begravs levande.
Men förhoppningsvis hittar någon stackare min bok om typ 80 år och tycker att mina anteckningar från pandemitiden är ”intressanta”.

Mycket intressant och lätt att läsa trots att det är väldigt mycket information. Jag känner mig ibland lite tveksam till Harrison men detta var en bra introduktion till ämnet. Den var även mycket lärorik då jag lärde mig en hel del som jag inte visste tidigare, som till exempel att digerdöden var startskottet för ett av de blodigaste perioderna när det gäller judeförföljelser. Det känns som något de kanske borde åtminstone nämna i skolan.

En spännande bok, men lite överväldigande med alla länder och människor som författaren hänvisar till. Men boken är fint uppdelat och tacklar alla frågor man kan tänka sig kring Pesten generellt.
