Den 8 november 1520 rullar huvudena på Stortorget. Offrens blod blandar sig med regnet och flyter ut mellan gatstenarna. Ett hundratal personer har precis dömts till döden i skenrättegångar och fått sina huvuden avhuggna i kung Kristian II:s blodiga hämndaktion mot dem som bestridit hans makt. Det som de döda trodde skulle bli en försoningsfest hade visat sig vara deras egen avrättning.

Stockholms blodbad, som markerar slutet på den svenska medeltiden, var bara en av många brutala massavrättningar i Europa under 1500-talet. Med sin djupa kunskap om tidsperioden reder Dick Harrison ut bakgrunden till en av svensk historias mest mytomspunna händelser, under en epok då grymma straff och blodshämnd närmast tillhörde vardagen.

I took out this book from the local municipal library to test my reading proficiency in Swedish.
And I must say, professor Harrison has put together an excellent primer/overview of this gory, dramatic turning point in Dano-Swedish history and relations - on top of it being interesting to get the Swedish perspective on things. The prose is accessible yet well-argued, there is a clear narrative thread, and the referencing works well. Also, the author makes a point out of listing suggestions for further readings on the topic.

A very enjoyable read all in all.

Sørgelig bog. Alt muligt fyldekalk er hældt ned i teksten. Britiske henrettelsesmetoder og skånske henrettelser. Alt er gjort for at undgå at fortælle om baggrunden for krigen i 1520 og blodbadet. Hovedfigurerne Sten Sture og Gustav Trolle dukker forbavsende sent op i bogen. Måske fordi forfatteren da bogen blev skrevet skulle aflevere utroligt mange nyskrevne bind til forlaget. Undgå pixibogen her og læs i stedte Wolkes fremragende bog med samme titel. Eller gå tilbage til svenske historikere fra 1940-70.

Excellent overview of the events surrounding and leading up to these executions in 1520.
It sets the executions in context describing how society was structured in that time period.
Well worth the read which is well-written and succinct.
