The kind of beauty I found at Dark Falls Academy is deadly.
My half-sister Allie told me all about the sorcery classes, the potent potions, and the incredibly hot supernatural creatures that frequent Dark Falls Academy. Soon, I’ll be one of them.
Only my first day doesn’t go as planned.
Allie has been lying to me.
This school isn’t a dream; it’s a nightmare. Creepy shifters, brooding vampires, snarky mermaids, and vicious Faerie folk all want a piece of me, and they're not willing to ask permission.
Flynn, the cruel bully.
Trent, the thirsty vampire.
And Cole, the dark Fae prince.
How I am supposed to kick their asses in the arena and in the classroom with all the mysteries and dangers lurking in the stony halls?
Dark Falls isn’t about good grades. It’s about survival.
Forbidden Magic is a college age academy romance with bully themes. Be warned that the steaminess increases with each book. Pick up your copy now and fall under the spell of Dark Falls’ gorgeous beasts.
A choppily written book with lots of OW drama, a very character-less heroine and pretty poor worldbuilding, but there were flashes of good dialogue. Also, it quotes The Cruel Prince at the beginning, aka my favourite YA novel EVER.
I just reread this again in preparation for reading the 2nd book, Forbidden Prince. It’s been a while since I’ve read this and it was just as good listening to it the second time around. Now I’m ready for book two! I definitely recommend that you read any of her books. Anya is a great author!
This book kind of reminded me of a Harry Potter meets House of Night meets The Vampire Diaries. Anya did a very good job of meshing them altogether for another great read. The book follows Jules, Julia Winslow, who has been eagerly anticipating joining her sister, Allie, at the Dark Falls Academy. She’s had to wait 3 whole months to attend this school (waiting until she turns 18). When she finally arrives, her sister is acting strange and the school isn’t all that Jules had hoped or heard it to be. Jules and the other mortals are bullied from the start by the immortals. They pretty much own the school. After all, mortals were forbidden from entering campus for over 50 years. Jules comes to campus with hopes of changing the view that immortals have of them (the mortals). She strongly believes, that they too, deserve to be there! There’s a scene in the book where they have a class known as “Duel” and Jules ends up in the infirmary a couple of times. This scene reminded me of when Harry had to duel Draco (which also happens to be the last name of one of the important immortal families in this book) in Harry Potter. It is at this last duel that Jules learns some unwanted news about her family background. It is a well written book with a few minor typos. I am really looking forward to the next installment in this series. I really look forward to seeing how Jules is going to accomplish her goals while having to fight off so many enemies that she has made, in her short time, at this Dark school . It definitely makes for some entertaining reading! I received this book for free, in return for my honest review.

Thank you to Anya J Cosgrove for allowing me to listen to a copy of this book. I already knew that I loved Cosgrove's writing style. However, this story had me hooked from the first chapter to the last. The ANGST within this book had me wanting more and more of the romance. The characters were written so well, and I am interested in each and every one of them. I cannot wait to continue this series.
This turned out better than I thought. Great storyline, characters, world building and plot lines. Smallish cliffhanger. Sassy FMC and the MMCs are way frustrating fae and vamps. Highly recommend. Solid 4 stars.
Jules and Allie are sisters born three months apart. Allie took off to college now with Jules trailing behind. The supernatural student creatures are determined to rid them from the school one way or the other. Lydia Cole is the prince of fae who helps lead the bullying but secretly he wants Jules. Flynn is his sidekick who is ruthless and cruel. Trent is a vampire who crushes big time on Jules and is there for her. When Cole and Jules are in their Duel class Thu expected happens. With more mortals being hurt by an unknown it's only a matter of time before Jules is next. This is suppose to be a rh but at this point there isn't one unless it's in the next installment Wicked Prince. Ye there is a cliffy but so worth the wait.
You follow Julia through her first semester of her magical education. She learns a lot about herself and who to trust along the way. Or more accurately not to trust. Will her stubborn determination drive her to loose everything she's working so hard for? Will it be worth it? Whose causing all this trouble?
This story ends on a major cliff hanger and with so many unanswered questions.

Lots of twists and unexpected intrigue as we follow Jules as she navigates the start of her magical schooling, so much to learn that she never saw coming, interesting storyline and looking forward to seeing her grow more!
Jules can't wait to get to Dark Falls Academy, she has been waiting for this moment. Her sister Allie has been there for three months already. Jules is not expecting the reception that she has. She is a mortal in a school for immortals and they let her know at all turns. She is being bullied by the group of immortals, her sister is acting so strange. She has no one to really rely one but her self. She makes friends with a few mortals. She is drawn to Cole a fae princess, he is one of the immortals making her life hell. He keeps showing her different sides to him. She is also attracted to Trent a vampire. There has been attacks on mortals, she is not what she thought she was and her magic is forbidden. She will have to outsmart the immortals to stay in school and keep her life. This book was so good, from her chemistry with Cole and Trent. The attacks on her and mortals, have to wonder what is going with her sister. What is really going with Cole. The author draws you right into the book, you get a little bit of everything with the new series. I can't wait to read book to see how Jule manages to survive and what is next.

I don't get why this book has so many 4 and 5 star reviews. I totally understand that every reader is different but I had to DNF because too many things were ruining the story for me.
Super close sisters but not one call or letter during the three months one is at school? No warning that school is awful or trying to prepare her?
FMC shows up to school to find beloved sister has undergone a complete personality shift and has physical markers of distress and she just shelves all her concern after 1 lame AF excuse?
FMC knows fae glamor is eff up and dangerous, but takes ZERO precautions anyway. And its not like the precaution are super hard, all she needs is fricking salt?! And I'm supposed to believe with this HUGE risk the witch/mage community hasn't come up with a defense or charm or spell or anything?
If the imbalance is so huge that they are being abducted/violated and the witch community hasn't made a defense then sorry, but they don't belong at the school to begin with. So that makes it really hard to buy into the mortals are just as good as other supes struggles because again, nothing I've read showed that to be even remotely true.
Witch Jules (FMC) is just starting at Dark Falls Academy. A school for Supernaturals where her sister has been attending for the last three months. Except it's not the place she had it would be. Mortals are hated, her sister has changed and is secretive and the other Supernaturals (Vampires, Fae, Shifters........etc) are trying to get rid of her. Throw into the mix Trent a Vampire who is interested in her and Cole an arrogant fae prince who seems to take great joy in winding her up. I was genuinely hooked on this book. It reeled me in from the first page and im dying to see what will happen next. Especially with that cliffhanger ending. Just Wow!
I love Forbidden Magic! This book is amazing. It is intriguing and captivating right from the beginning. It is well written and detailed. The magical world is entrancing. The setting of a Magical University is really interesting with all the different supernatural students and their abilities. I really like the characters and the complicated relationships within the school. This is a wonderful new series. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
Audiobook Review: This book needs to come with more warnings; the only ones at the book review site I downloaded it from were bullying (a definite trigger) and reverse harem (more of a content warning). I was shocked and actually appalled by the way women and “others” were treated in this book. At first, the book came across as though it might be a somewhat naughty Harry Potter-like story, acceptable because the students—mortals and immortals—go to the academy as young adults. But things devolved quickly, and I think I only kept listening because I kept hoping it would revert to what I hoped it would be.
What were the specific problems? Women and female creatures are objectified and treated only as sexual beings again, again, and again. The magical academy supposedly has anti-bullying and “no harm against others” policies, but students are not monitored much nor are the policies equally enforced. Some things that happened, especially to the heroine and other female characters, were so wrong, yet just accepted in this world as the way it was. But the worst was how the heroine was treated by most other students, including multiple incidents of bullying, intentional harm, and sexual misconduct. If you have had a MeToo experience—or have a loved one who has had one—you may not want to read this book! The objectification of women and female creatures, too, even without outside the direct sexual misconduct, was disturbing. Of course, too, all these terrible things happen to the heroine and some of her friends, but when she tries to protect or stand up for herself, she's the one who’s caught and seen to be wrong. The actual bad guys’ terrible actions are not seen or punished. Grrrrr!
The academy also very much has an “Us and Them” mentality. We're trying so hard to get away from that in Western cultures that I don't like to see it as the “norm” in a story like this. The heroine is also problematic. For reasons never fully explained, even though she knew it was a supposed privilege—so to speak—to be one of the mortals let back into this academy, she's pretty cavalier about how she treats her studies, others she's supposed to be working with, and even the teachers. For some reason, too, it's a thing for students to make stupid dares with each other, with the loser typically promising to leave the academy. What? Also, the magical academy itself has issues beyond what I’ve already stated. Academies are supposed to be about learning, at least in part, but most classes shown, like Duels and Spells & Sorcery (I think, as it was usually referred to as just “S&S”), don't actually teach the students anything. Rather, they're just thrown into situations and told to make it work without first being given magical skill lessons. Pick a challenge, pick a spell category, or pick a sparring partner … and have at. A very sloppy way of world-building, especially for a magical world.
TRIGGERS: bullying, sexual misconduct (many), multiple #MeToo moments, unequal sexual relationship (teacher-student), objectification of females, intentional harm multiple times,
I received a promo code for this audiobook, but that did not affect my review.
From the start, Forbidden Magic had me hooked with its blend of magical creatures, intense drama, and a fierce heroine. Anya Cosgrove builds an immersive world at Dark Falls Academy, where mortals like Jules struggle to survive among powerful immortals. The story jumps right into the action, with plenty of tension, magic, and danger.
Jules, a fiery Winslow witch, is the perfect match for Dark Falls Academy’s elite, especially with immortals like Flynn, Trent, and Cole trying to kick her out. The enemies-to-lovers tension between her and Cole, the dark fae prince, is intense and addicting. Flynn, the bully, and Trent, the thirsty vampire, add even more drama and conflict. The pacing is fast, with plenty of mystery and twists, making it impossible to stop listening. The academy’s dark, dangerous vibe and constant surprises make this a thrilling start to the series.
Addison Barnes was great! She brings each character to life, especially capturing Jules' fire and Cole's cold intensity. Her voice is clear, engaging, and really pulls you into the story, making it easy to get lost in Cosgrove's world.
If you’re into enemies-to-lovers, magical academies, or paranormal fantasy, this audiobook is a must. Heads up—it ends on a cliffhanger, so you’ll be craving the next one! Definitely recommend, especially with Addison Barnes’ awesome narration.

3.5 Stars. This book was inspired by Holly Black's (Carden). I have to say though there was a lot of reference to Harry Potter in this book. I haven't read a Holly Black book, so I don't know but I do know Harry Potter and there were way too many similarities in this book. Did it pack a good slow burn yes, did I root for the bad guy yes, but never make a deal with a Fae. Cole and Jules are like fire with fire, now I have to see where this crazy love lust is going to go, because if those two don't end up together. Ugg. Cole is a Fae, Jules is a witch who did not know had Demon blood in her, but when she found out she has to stay under the radar, so no one knows. Cole has a secret though and Jules knows what it is... Swearing, High school drama/Bullying, slow burn love, Violence, sex and whole lot of bickering. Recommend to 17yrs and up... Gina.
From the start this audiobook grabbed and kept my attention to the point that each time I stopped playing it I kept thinking about the storyline. The main characters chemistry between each other was well written and has on many occasions kept me wondering whether Cole is truly bad or not. I’ll have to wait and see. Much is happening at the Academy that Jules and her sister now attend, the immortals aren’t all so friendly and the mortals need to be on their guard to survive. I enjoyed both the story and narration and am looking forward to continuing this series to it’s conclusion. I received a copy of this audiobook and am voluntarily leaving a review.
An entertaining paranormal YA romance. The characters are good, but I did want to shake Jules several times to get her head in the game. Cole is a interesting dark character that she is drawn to. There is the typical High school cliques, romances and friendships but with immortals, Fae, vampires, shifters and witches thrown in, and a big overall conspiracy. The writing is excellent, the story is suitably dark and complex. Anya Cosgrove as created an involving and entertaining start to a series. Addison Barnes gives an excellent performance. I received a complimentary copy from the Author and am leaving a honest voluntary review
I listened to the audiobook of this and the narrator was great, wide range of distinct voices including when she was doing male voices.
The book has an interesting concept, I didn't feel like it was following the traditional "Go to school and learn this new world." script that we see in a lot of books. Some things she knows, others she has to learn.
By the end of the book there are still a lot of things left unanswered. That is great for this being a series, just have to be patient for the next book. I will say that the cast seemed a little large and I felt like someone identified as a friend suddenly popped up but I might have mixed people up.
This was a big disappointment. Did I enjoy certain parts? Sure. The big let down was how the story all came together. This is aupposed to be a bully reverse harem. Which I like. However this barely qualifies as a reverse harem in my opinion. There were kinda sorta 3 guys in the mix but one becomes her husband, the other is just his best friend who he allowed to join in only twice and the 3rd dates her in the first book and then seemingly ends up with her best friend by the end. Really there is only a real relationship between her and the one guy. I kept waiting for everyone to get together but I never really happens.

When you spend the bulk of the boom wishing ill befalls the MFC..you know it’s over. Jules is constantly talking about her 0 experience with nookie. At first I thought there was some significance by it, but no. Just the ramblings of the MFC. Not to mention Jules is foolish. Pig headed. Truly isn’t likeable. The typical trope of mortal bad / supernatural good was sloppily written. The Fae are paper villains. And now Cole is behind everything and is the big bad? C’mon. Lazy writing. Definitely not picking up the next one.
📚𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I decided to get back to where I really got into Fantasy and Paranormal Romance with spice: Academy books. And it worked like a charm! I'm out of my 2-months reading slump. This book was just quick, light, fun, entertaining. Nothing deep or dark, just a relaxing reading, while still not being boring or cozy. It actually reminded me a little of a *VERY* tamed and mild version of Zodiac Academy.
Great book. Not a lot of steam ... but the author does note it increases with the series. The overall world Anya has created is very enthralling and alluring to me and made me want to continue to the next book immediately... I started #2 immediately after. The only thing lacking is the fact that the books are extremely short. I wish they were a bit more detailed and lengthier. The author seems to skip over time without your realizing it, and it goes from this to that to this very quick paced.
This book is full of plot holes and veers off a lot in the storyline to the point I was confused and had to go to the previous page and re-read. The author also “overly describes” every scene. You can only read about a person “peeling from a chair” or feeling a “whispering breeze” so many times before it gets really annoying and frankly unnecessary. You can tell which authors hire professor editors and which don’t. Better luck next series and hope the author matures in her writing abilities
I would not characterize this book as a paranormal romance. Maybe the romance will come in the later books, but I don’t know that I’ll be reading any of the others. The writing itself was fine, but I just don’t like the characters. The FMC is a hothead that isn’t very likable and none of the guys are swoonworthy. I almost DNF’d because I was kind of bored.
I love this author.... I would call this YA opposed to NA which surprised me! There is no sexy time incase that was what you were looking for but I was ok with that though I would have liked a little something. I wouldn't call this a RH either like it was tagged. I hope she does write #2 soon! Ended though... Im confused. It was like we were going all and BOOM DONE.
