Sail away with this third installment of the Comedy LitRPG for terrible people!

Something suspicious is happening on the Saunora Isles. The governor is up to no good and there’s clearly only one group that can stop him. No, I’m not talking about the Immoral Exiles. I’m talking about the Pirate Empress Red Snatch and her loyal crew of Butt Pirates.

Escorting an undercover Katarina Amarion was supposed to be an easy straight forward mission, but with Eldertits taking the reigns as a notorious pirate captain it threatens to be anything but. Conflicts appear everywhere as Elaria struggles with her feelings towards a certain human, Ryland discovers the joys of opium, and Rondo fights against not just a warrior of good but of social justice.

With a crew like this what could possibly go wrong? Oh right. Everything.

After the issues with the last Digital Sorcery book I would have skipped reading this one all together if not for the fact that I'd already bought my copy of this third book before the second book went so bad. I figured it was worth a go since I'd already bought the thing! The good news is this book is less offensive than the last one with less overt endorsing of racism, homophobia, and other morally disgusting topics. It still had a few bad moments and failed to rehabilitate the damage done to Rondo's character in the last book but it did better rehabilitating both Elaria and Chris into characters the reader could tolerate.

The plot was fine. Chris and the team went on a mission to investigate claims the Governor of the Saunora Isles, a vassal state of Altria, has been conspiring with an enemy nation to rebel against Altrian rule. To complicate matters Lady Katarina insists on coming on the mission, in disguise, to investigate these claims herself. As cover the group decide to pose as pirates. Eldertits insists on being the pirate captain and takes the title Red Snatch. One needs little imagination to guess what went down from here but suffice to say it was probably not the best call to give Eldertits command of a pirate ship!

The story was fine. It had a ton of comedy, a bit of action/adventure, and a tiny bit of intrigue, and even a little romance. Eldertits was probably a bit over the top, even for her, and I think the story leaned too much on the comedy elements in general when compared to the first book in the series. I felt that one had a better balance as most of the characters in the story seemed pretty normal, outside of the crazed Eldertits obviously, and I felt like that offered the story a better balance. This one was heavy on comedy all the way with even the tamer characters like Chris, Lady Katherine, and Elaria getting caught up in some crazy antics. Some of it was actually pretty funny but it did occasionally get too much.

Little progress was made in this instalment with either of the Gods story arcs but that was not a giant issue. It was fun learn a bit more about Lady Katherine and about Altrian politics in general. It was also fun to have a bit of romance in the story. I do like the pairing of Chris and Katherine and felt their romance was easy enough to root for and has developed at a decent pace over the course of the series. I was less keen on the other romantic pairing this book developed.

This was OK. It had a few bad moments but also had plenty of the stuff that made the first book such a light and fun read. I might read the next instalment if one appears.

Random Thought: The blurbs for the second and third books of this series really suck. Whoever came up with them needs a hard kick in the balls. They would actively drive me away from buying the books! It is a good thing the blurb for the first book was not so awful or I'd never have touched the series to begin with.

Rating: 3 stars. It was probably worth 3.5 stars but I'm chopping off half a star due to Rondo and the lingering homophobia.

Audio Note: Matt Weight does a decent job with the audio for this series.

Yup, it's comedy for terrible people. I couldn't stop laughing because I am, in fact, a terrible person.
