SNOWED IN WITH A ROGUE is a Regency anthology featuring authors Victoria Oliveri, Gina Danna, Tracy Edingfield, Cerise DeLand, Sandra Masters, Jacki Delecki, and Angelique Armae. Our stories cover women in every walk of life from slave to spy, and from worldly titled matrons to innocent young misses. The heroes have to step up their game to match these indomitable ladies.
International bestselling author, Victoria Oliveri, is a long-time researcher and re-enactor whose studies and travels have given her tomes of ideas for her historical novels. She lives in the mountainous Lehigh Valley with her rescued cats and beautiful parrots.
My review is on A Code of Wonder by Jacki Delecki. Although I received an ARC of this novella, I also bought the anthology and will update my review when I've read the other novellas.
Ms. Delecki has penned another sweet but adventurous story set in her Code Breakers series. Nicholas/Nash, Earl of Wessex rescues Eliza Lyon who has been kidnapped by French henchmen who mistake her for her sister Abby.Nash may be a bored rogue but once he begins to know Eliza he's ready to make some major changes in his life. A fast paced plot, French henchmen, intrigue and romance. A perfect afternoon read.
At the Countess of Marsden’s house party, she plans to marry off her family and friends. But when the Duke of Harlow strides into her bedroom on Christmas Eve, Gertrude’s ready to continue the charming affair they began last summer. Even though she’s a lady of a certain age. Even though she’s never loved any man other then her dear departed husband! Harlow’s enchanted by Gertrude. He’s done with mourning—and he’s ready to laugh again! But he wants more than a few nights with her. When he tells her, what will she say? Can she love him? At his age? Imperfect as he is? Loving her as he does?
My review
With youth and first love behind them, can two mature persons find a new love together.
This is my second read in this series, and it was as enjoyable as the first one, and quite different as with older characters they have a perception of live far different from their younger selves. Gertrude, sorry but it is such an ugly name, is as lovable as her name is hideous which is saying something. She had a life filled with love and she wants to spread the feeling around her. I love her vision of life and love. She is looking for the best of her dearests and won’t settle for less even for herself. She schemed her party to diffuse happiness around her, by matchmaking her nieces with the men they loved, she knows she offers them a different future from the one they expected after their fall in destitution. Harlow is not a bad man but I rather disliked he refused his own son the same joy he had in his marriage. He mulls things too much, he is lucky his counterpart is Gertrude, she is so forgiving. In her contact, he will realize the wrong he had done to his son and accept to cut himself some slack.
It was a sweet tale of a second love and the joy to see their kin happily settled. 5 stars for this cheerful story. I was granted by the author and advance copy of this novella, and I had previously preordered the anthology. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
A Code of Wonder by Jacki Delecki This was such an entertaining read! Even though, Nash was a rogue and loved the women there was something so likeable about him. Not the least, that he stepped in to save Eliza. Eliza was a lady who preferred being in the stables and riding astride than needlework and painting. She was also quite fearless when she needed to be. This is a fast paced story with plenty of action involving spies and misunderstandings. I love how protective the men get! It also has romance and a love at almost first sight.
Aunt Gertrude’s Hot Christmas Beau by Cerise’s DeLand I did enjoy this story very much. The main couple were older and that always makes a change. The Countess of Marsden (Trudy) and George, Duke of Harlow had a brief affair a number of months ago. This action takes place at Trudy’s houseparty around Christmas. Harlow turns up and hopes to reconnect with Trudy, they have a definite attraction to each other. There are a number of events that take place during the houseparty, including Harlow’s relationship with his son and heir. But mainly it’s a story to say you are never too old to change or enjoy yourself. The epilogue rounded off the other stories in this series.
Reviewing One Enchanted Winter by Victoria Oliveri
"All you need to do is love me, dear heart, that is all I ask." - Dederick
And that line ladies and gentlemen got me. It's a wonderful and sweet love story that everyone should read. The love they felt for each other seemed rush but definitely believable, because I personally can guarantee that when you feel it no matter how soon as long as it's true it's forever.
This historical Regency plethora of multiple novelettes are contributed by a variety of authors. All involve the English royalty and the scenario of an innocent being snowed in due to various reasons with a handsome royal, concluding with happy endings. However, as the title indicates, fair warning, it has very descriptive hot and saucy scenes with some gory incorporated and is not for prudish or the faint of heart. Yet, among the variety offered, readers will sure to find some stories to their enjoyment.
This is definitely one series of books worth reading. Strong, smart women that can take care of themselves. The men have to really work hard to keep up. Once you start reading, you won’t stop until the end. Don’t miss out once it’s released.
I'm sorry but I just didn't enjoy this collection very much - so I stopped after reading and being disappointed by several stories. I decided I should just spend my time reading elsewhere so this is my review of those I did read.
One Enchanted Winter - this was kind of slow and honestly, a little boring. I didn't really feel any chemistry between them until the second half and I really didn't like the sister.
To Kiss a Lady - I thought this one was ok. Decent interactions between the hero and heroine. On it's own it was just decent, but compared to the others I read it was the best of the lot.
His Moonbeam Girl - I found the beginning to be a bit jarring, the introduction of a slave girl who'd survived being raped. Not really my key ingredient for a romance but I did read on. The story was well written for the most part, but I didn't really feel a "romance." This traumatized girl chases after the hero, which didn't feel right for a girl who'd just recovered from being raped. The way he acts in the beginning, you'd think he was late 40s and she was 14. She was 16 and he was 28 - enough of an age gap to be careful of her but he acts like an old man in the beginning. And then when he decides he wants her it just now feels like he's a lecher, not a man overcoming some initial doubts. And the way he acts later just don't sit well but I'm glad she finally tossed him to the curb (but felt like it took way too long to get to that point), ensuring he'd grovel his way back. So as a story it was good. As a romance it just felt icky to me at times.
Aunt Gertrude's Red Hot Christmas Beau - Ok reading about grandparents having a romance is not romantic to me at all. That said, she did a good job making you buy into it -- think an older Paul Newman or Kirk Douglas and it still works. But the real issue was there were WAY too many people and way too many things going on. It was like she was trying to wrap up or start stories for characters in other books (and I was exactly correct -- she has a series called Christmas Belles where each of the couples has their own story but they're all thrown together here). Just too much going on and you really didn't care for any of the characters. What was kind of funny to me was her excerpt (each author included a sneak peak of another book) for His Tempting Governess, Delightful Doings in Dudley Crescent was much better written than the anthology story.
The Merry Christmas Widow's Snowy Christmas - This one was the worst of the ones I read. The conversations between them seemed overly dramatic and kind of juvenile considering they'd both been married before. They sounded like two 14 year olds play-acting. Her behavior was the most irritating. She was going to teach him a lesson, then she's in his arms, then at one point she actually tries to knee him in the groin. I'm all for sexual tension and will-she-won't-she? but this was not done well. And a lot of things were just drawn out, including the world's longest note left by a servant.
It was this story (and reading the synopses of the last two stories) that made me decide this collection wasn't going to get better and I should cut my losses.
AUNT GERTRUDE'S RED HOT CHRISTMAS BEAU Cerise DeLand
I will confess right off the bat that I preordered this box set solely for Cerise DeLand's story, which runs concurrently with but follows The Marquess's Final Fling in the series. AUNT GERTRUDE'S RED HOT CHRISTMAS BEAU features the Duke of Harlow, the father of the previous book's hero, Theo. While this story - as well as the Marquess's - stand entirely on their own, I encourage you to read them both, if possible in order, to get an even better reading experience. Besides you will not regret it as both are excellent and filled with Regency Christmas cheer and romance.
Gertrude, the Countess of Marsden, is holding a Christmas house party where she hopes to marry off her beloved nieces. Gertrude - Trudy - a widow for some years had known socially George, the Duke of Harlow, before but in the summer of 1815 they had a brief fling, as he was now also widowed. Trudy had such a wonderful time that she decides to invite the duke to her party, come what may. She also has an ulterior motive... Or two.
AUNT GERTRUDE'S RED HOT CHRISTMAS BEAU is another fabulous novella from Cerise DeLand! It's great that we have a silver fox and a silver vixen as a couple; both characters are in their mid to late forties, or so. Trudy is a magnificent heroine: bold, organised, smart, and so very appealing. Harlow is very "dukish", sometimes a little too much, and I loved how he got not one but two dressing-downs. He's a very good man but a little too set in his ways, and his growth was welcome and believable. I absolutely loved how both Harlow and Trudy spoke of their late spouses.
It's a very nuanced story, as we go from joyous and happy moments to disturbing and unexpected events then to several happy ever afters. The writing is again marvellous but the dialogues are truly scintillating and so witty. Ms. DeLand writes in a very cinematic way that the whole story sparkles and shines in vibrant colours. How lovely it all was! It elicited more than one happy sigh from this reader!
I hope to find the time to read all the other novellas, but I lament the fact that there is no real table of contents and it's a tad complicated if you don't read every story one after other. Thank goodness for the search feature, but it would be nice if that could be fixed; at least, have the title and the author to simply things.
Author, Cerise DeLand's outstanding contribution to this anthology, Aunt Gertrude's Red Hot Christmas Beau, is the Sixth book in the Christmas Belles series. Never one to disappoint, Cerise DeLand has written a novella that is filled with lots of romance and several great laughs that will leave you longing for more! Who says only romantic trysts and love can only happen to the young? In this beautifully written story, Gertrude The Countess of Marsden, is throwing a house party to celebrate the Christmas season. Having met George, The Duke of Harlow several months prior, Gertrude is anticipating another wonderful night of frolicking that she experienced with him at that time. With the issue of getting her nieces married and taken care of settled, it is time for Gertrude to have a very Merry Christmas herself. With the usual danger and excitement included, the house party shows to be a promising year for love! Author Cerise DeLand continues to fill her pages with, "exciting, flair for life stories", that have the right mix of romance and adventure ! I definitely give this wonderful novella, Five Plus Stars!
Who would not want to be snowed in with a Rogue? A great name for a fantastic collection from some of the best in historical romance. Oh, let it snow!!
Aunt Gertrude's Hot Christmas Beau by Cerise DeLand When Gertrude, the Countess of Marsden decides to hold a Christmas house party, she hopes to use her matchmaking skills and help her nieces become bethrothed to gentlemen they love. After all, their lives have been hard and they deserved to be happy! But Trudy also wants a little happiness for herself and pens a scandalous invitation to the Duke of Harlow. A widow, she knows what she wants and it is more time with Harlow after their delightful interlude. But she also wants love again as she had with her husband. High emotions, a little intrigue, arrests, a kidnapping and several love matches make this such a fast paced delightful story. I fell in love with Trudy and Harlow. Happiness can be found anytime in life and they proved just that!! This is a new book and part of a series that all take place at the same time so you will see or hear about other characters. Simply scrumptuous! But that is a given with this author!!!
I received an ARC of A Code of Wonder which is the 8th book in The Code Breakers series. This was a fast paced book that was fun to read. Perfect for reading in one set down. Nicholas “Nash”, the Earl of Wessex, was bored of his life in town. He decides to travel to his estate that he hasn’t been to in years. He had stopped at an inn for the night when he was intrigued to see a female climbing from the nearby inn’s window. Elizabeth Lyon had been mistaken for her sister and kidnapped by French men. She was determined to escape and warn her sister and brother in law. When Nash came out of the inn and fought the French men, she stole his horse intending to get home. Nash is astonished his horse let her ride him but followed her to help her. When she slips off he rescues her and takes her to a nearby hunting lodge. They are found in a compromising position by her family. Will they catch the French men and be forced to marry?
A mixed bag of sweet romance and some delightfully more steamy in nature. Each tale becomes more compelling the further you progress through the boxset. Angelique Armae, Cerise Deland, Jacki Delecki and Tracy Edingfield may be among my favourites as the likability of the characters, connection and flow of their stories kept me glued until the last word. That said each had their own unique charm and strength of character whether it be in the depth they projected, the heated allure and passion created or moments of heart, wit and whimsy generated to make all the tales enjoyable even if not necessarily to the same degree. Many a tale is apart of a very intriguing series in their own right, that I will no doubt be hunting out in the near future!! That said each story can be enjoyed as a stand-alone despite the delight of familiar characters appearing in many. Well worth the read and a steal at the price!!!
This was a delightful novella to read and what I learned from it is that love doesn't care if a couple is from a different class and if you fight hard enough, it can overcome all obstacles.
Dederick and Arabella are such a couple. He's nobility and she's a governess. After getting hurt in a carriage accident, Dederick returns home to find himself being taken care of by the doctor's daughter, Arabella, while they are snowed in. Once Dederick realizes that he's in love with her, nothing will stop him from marrying her, even if it means going against his parents' wishes and being disinherited. He also needs to convince Arabella to marry him!!!
I received an ARC of this story and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
I was gifted a copy of the book Aunt Gertrudes Red Hot Christmas Beau by Cerise Deland. I found this book to be a delightful little read, it was very well written. A Christmas party with a house full of guests, a couple unexpected guests and unrequitted love. Can true love why a way, or will it be forbidden once again? This book was able to pull different emotions from me which I definitely look for in books, I would certainly recommend this book to others. For me this book would rate about a 4.5 stars.
I read an ARC of Victoria Oliver's "One Enchanted Winter". This is a unique turnaround of the "stranded in a snowstorm" story line as both H and h set out separately, yet are forced to return to his father's estate. His family and most servants are not in residence. Daughter of a physician, she nurses him. When he recovers from the worst, he falls in love with her. While she is a caring person and acts accordingly, she seems rather ambivalent toward him for most of the story. Not exactly a passionate romance. I am voluntarily leaving my review. I liked it, thus 3 goodread 🌟
Code of Wonder is one of the books in this box set. Eliza had Nash's attention from the time he saw her climbing out of a window of the Inn he was drinking and stealing his horse. From there they have an adventure that he never expected but he was definitely happy to be in the company of a woman who could certainly make him a very happy man. This one of the stories in this collection and it is worth the read. Characters are quite interesting and exciting. I was given a a copy as a gift from the author without obligation. I am providing an honest review.
This is a review of One Enchanted Winter. Arabella and Dederick have a whirlwind romance while they are stranded at his family’s country estate during a snowstorm. He has sprained his ankle in a carriage accident and as the daughter of a physician she knows how to care for him. They bond over their love of reading. But he’s the son of an Earl and his family disapproves. And Arabella would rather be a governess than marry him. This was a lightly sensual romance with steamy scenes at the end.
As soon as I read Victoria Oliveri’s contribution to the anthology, I was hooked. She wrote a sweet, charming and heartwarming book to add to this wonderful collection. It was my first book by Ms. Oliveri and I am glad I discovered her. I look forward to reading her other books as her writing style is comfortable and made me feel happy. I’m now off to read the other books in this collection and am certain I will enjoy each one of them.
I only got the story Aunt Gertrudes Red hot Christmas by Cerise DeLand. I really enjoyed this book and I cant wait to purchase and read the other stories. I enjoyed the characters and the plot. I cant wait for her next book.
A CODE OF WONDER: This is a fun, simple romance where a rogue Earl (Nash, Lord Wessex) falls in love at first sight with Eliza, a sweet thing in trousers. A most enjoyable afternoon read! I received a pre-published eARC with no strings attacked.
I read “One Enchanted Winter” by Victoria Oliveri. A delightful novella by a talented author. This is the first book I have read by this author and I can say it won’t be my last. The story captivated me from the first page and held me to the very end.
A Code of Wonder, my fourteenth read from author Jacki Delecki & the eighth in the Codebreaker series. I have to admit I'm hooked on the Code Breakers series! Well written, with wonderful character development (as always), although by this time you know all the players involved. Action, suspense, and romance build throughout the book until near the end you cannot wait to turn the next page! Delecki has created a series of books that you cannot wait to get to the next one. As always I look forward to the next book. (RIP Marley January 20, 2014 - July 24, 2018)
These are not your usual aristocrats for sure. To Win a Lady was a backward wallflower with an adorable ending. His Moonbeam Girl has little to do with the aristocracy. Aunt Gertrude is a hoot.
ONE ENCHANTED WINTER by Victoria Oliveri A sweet enchanting romance that reminds one that anything is possible when it comes to matters of the heart. I enjoyed the main characters: Arabella Wheatley, the daughter of Dr. Wheatley a physician and Lord Dederick Gillingham, the youngest son of the Earl of Harrington. Arabella had been educated by one of the finest girls’ school in the area and trained as a governess. She just finished an assignment and was now at home with her father helping him with his practice. Her younger sister Caroline lived at Braedon Manor and was employed as a seamstress by the Countess of Harrington. Dederick loved reading and learning. He had asked his father to allow him a few more years at University to study but his father said it was a waste of time. He had no profession although he did ponder on more than one occasion what would fulfill this desire. As the Earl and Countess had left for London and let most of the staff return to their homes for a month. There were just a few people to watch over things. Due to an unfortunate snow storm it threw Arabella and Dederick together. Caroline, Arabella, Dederick and the small staff were stuck at Braedon Manor. Dederick's coach fell into a ditch and he became injured. His driver got himself and Dederick back to Braedon Manor safely. Thank goodness Arabella was there. She went into action when Dederick arrived. She had medical knowledge from working with her father and knew what to do. Dederick suffered from a fever and a severe sprained ankle. During his recuperation time he spent a lot of it with Arabella who did not leave his side till he was on the mend. They became better acquainted and Dederick's admiration for Arabella grew into love. Arabella would be the last to admit her attraction to Dederick. For over eight years whenever they spoke, he always treated her as a friend not someone below his status but as an equal. None of the rest of his family behaved like he did. They simply pretended she did not exist. Dederick had no idea what obstacles he was to encounter in his pursuit of Arabella's hand in marriage. There was the class distinction, even though Arabella was the daughter of a gentleman his parents may not approve. Then there was getting Arabella giving up her dedication to being a governess and training young minds. Dederick had much to consider. Everything came to a head when he received word his parents were returning within two day. Who knew what was to occur? He may lose Arabella, he may have to walk away from his family to be with her, he did not know what would happen. A quick and enjoyable winter read. I received an Advanced Readers Copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I read A Code of Wonder by Jacki Delecki, and am reviewing that story only at this time. I received an ARC from the author which I would like to thank her for. This is book eight of the Code Series, I have read some of the others. All books in this series can be read as stand alone. Nicholas Balthasar Trentham, Earl of Wessex is bored with life in general, he has left his mistress, is tired of over drinking with his friends, and society. He has headed to his family estate that he has not been to since his father died a year ago. As he sits in a poor Inn wondering what he is doing and why. He sees a female escape out a window, while he watches the women is attacked by two man, who slaps her hard. Nash has seen enough and leaps to save her. While he is fighting the two she takes his horse and flees. His horse Ace of Spades is a skittish stallion that usually only lets him handle him. Miss Elizabeth Louise Lyon, Eliza to her friends has been kidnapped by Frenchman who think she is her sister Abbie. She has no idea where her brother in law home Bonnington Estate is or how to find it. She has no coat, and the weather is cold, her injury from being knocked unconscious is all starting to take its toll. She sees that the English man who stopped the Frenchman is chasing her. As Nash is ready to stop his horse, he watches as she falls off. He finds her unconsciousness and freezing. How he handles getting her help, keeps her from the cold, is beaten for his help solves the mystery of why the Frenchmen want her.Falls in love for the first time in his life. Makes for a fast paced short story. This is a great read with many twist and turns. Be sure and get your copy, something hot to drink and be ready not to move till finished. The only bad thing I can say about this story is I wished it was longer.
I read Snowed In With A Rogue-and will review Aunt Gertrude's Red Hot Christmas Beau now. We have previously met Aunt Gertrude in 3 previous books about Aunt Gertrude's Christmas house party and the romances of her three nieces by author Cerise DeLand. Aunt Gertrude had invited the Duke of Harlow, but had not received a reply from him. Late on the first night of the house party, she was preparing to go to bed, and the Duke arrived. She did not have a room for him, and he wanted to sleep with her in her bed. She wanted the same but knowing servants gossip, she gave him her bedroom, and slept in an adjoining room. The previous summer, the Duke and Aunt Gertrude had unexpectedly run into each other in a resort where they were both staying. They spent a delightful day together, and then had a delightful interlude in bed. The Duke was a widower and Aunt Gertrude was a widow and they had known each other in high society previously. Aunt Gertrude hoped to hear from the Duke, but did not. She was hoping he would accept her Christmas party invitation. The house party became quite lively, with all sorts of happenings. Her three nieces became engaged when their long lost lovers appeared at the house party. And there was some mayhem as well. The Duke's son-the Marquess of Tain was also at the houseparty-pursuing his first love now that he was also a widower....but that's another complete story -also delightful. On Christmas night, after a very eventful Christmas day-Aunt Gertrude and the Duke finally get together in her bed and they are a very sexy couple. And the rest of their story ends happily ever after. Once again, Cerise DeLand has written delightful stories centered around that Christmas house party. You will want to read all of them.
I purchased this book after it was recommended to me in the Historical Harlots Facebook group. Inside this book you will find a group of entertaining (with a slight bit of steam to fog up your Kindle, but not too much), stories about being stranded in the snow - sometimes by accident and sometimes accidentally on purpose.
As always in an anthology there were stories I liked better than others, but each of the stories written blended with the next as the themes were all based on winter. And with winter comes Winter Weddings, and Christmas and...well, you'll just have to read the stories to find out. I'd considered listing each story and writing a review of each, but that defeats the purpose of having an anthology so you, as a reader, can sample "new to you" authors and read something of those you're already a fan of.
This is the first anthology where I can't choose a favorite. Each and every author put their best foot forward and wrote a short story that fit the season. As with all short stories/novellas, I always wish for MORE - more character development, more story, but I have to say this was a satisfying read. I'm just sorry it took me so long to review it. It was definitely worth my reading time.
I love books with a silver fox, it makes a nice change. This one in particular is very good and gets a solid 5 stars from me. Cerise Deland has an ability to create a very comfortable and real dialogue with her characters. This makes a feel of a genuine relationship between them. I love her style of writing. The book holds your attention from the beginning with lots of action and there is always a light hearted thread running through it. Aunt Gertrude is holding a Christmas house Party with the intention for her Nieces to find their perfect match. At the same time she indulges her own desire for love and invites an old flame to join in the fun and lots of action. Needless to say this turns into a very memorable gathering with lots of well developed characters. They are all real and relatable right down to the butler Simms who has his own dilemma in the making. You will be treated to Romance in abundance with a bit of mystery and angst surrounded by Christmas cheer and good humor. I recommend this book for adult readers as there is intimacy and can't wait for the next book. I was gifted this book as an advance copy and willingly leave my honest review.
How can you miss with this boxed set of stories by seven talented authors? You can’t.
The Countess of Marsden is hosting a house party, a week of fun and games, conversation, entertainment, and a bit of matchmaking for her three nieces. As the party progresses, romance finds several of her guests as well. Gertrude is a little disappointed when the Duke of Harlow declines her request to attend. Imagine her surprise when he walks right into her bedchamber on Christmas Eve.
Gertrude and George (Harlow) have a charming story. Each of them had a love match, a long happy marriage, and a good life. Neither of them is looking for that kind of love again, but they are ready to enjoy life. This is not a story of a second chance for love, but one of a chance for a second love. How will it all work out? Aunt Gertrude’s Christmas party is proving to be very interesting. I really like this story and the Christmas Belles series. It gets a happy recommendation.
I received a copy of Aunt Gertrude’s Read Hot Christmas Beau from the author.
One Enchanted Winter by Victoria Oliveri is a romance that made my heart happy. A heavy snow forces Arabella Wheatley and her sister to take shelter at Braedon Manor. When Lord Dederick is injured in a carriage accident, Arabella nurses him. I like a woman who is strong and capable. Her intelligence is refreshing. She's educated and wants to help others. Lord Dederick is well born and an honorable man. I wish that he could find a purpose that ignites his passion. The attraction between them is powerful. I loved seeing them grow together. Their dialogue was sweet . When he proposed I fell in love I was impressed by his willingness to risk his heart. I was bothered at how Lord Dederick's parents fought against their engagement. I misjudged Arabella. She won the battle of wills with her response to their criticism. This was such a feel good story. Victoria Oliveri did an excellent job. Her contribution to this anthology was amazing. I received a copy of this book which I voluntarily read and reviewed. My comments are my honest opinion.
