A more accurate name for this book would be "A Political History of Venice" seeing as that was the author's focus. It acts more as a window into how a 19th century Venetian saw their city rather than a text for lay people. Still enlightening in many ways if not very applicable to the average tourist.
A more accurate title might be 'Brief Political History of Venice.'
Around the halfway point, the book became a bit of a slog, feeling like a repetitive list of names, locations, and dates. Ironically, despite its detail in some areas, it skims over crucial historical contexts. I would have appreciated a deeper dive into the barbarian invasions of the 5th century Italian peninsula and insights into the origins of Venice's unique architecture. Even with updates as late as 2003, the book glosses over significant events like the world wars.
Overall, it's an okay read for a single day, but it lacks the depth to be truly satisfying.
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Pros: Quick and easy to read (I finished this in less than a day) Cons: Too brief to allow for much in the way of nuance, feels v biased but difficult to assess. A good starting point in any event.
The book deals with the history of Venice through the interpretative lens of anacyclosis. The book gives some great insight but is not a quick introductory essay into its history. The book requires you to already have a good deal of historical knowledge of the city and wants to reflect back on the major events of this illustrious city's past. The main fault with this book is therefore that it presents itself as an introduction into its history (or is advertised as such) while its actually a profound reflection.
I think that this book’s translation is very sloppy, and therefore it does not read fluidly in English. I found it hard to follow, and even harder to keep up with the pace of the book - when they say brief, they really do mean brief. Overall, I wish I’d spent the time and money on a larger, in depth book written either in English or professionally translated, rather than learn very little from this shorter version. It may read much better in Italian.
this is a good read for anyone visiting Venice who wants some context especially on the doges and the Venetian government. the challenge with this book is that it requires some context and is written to insiders. I was only able to understand many events alluded to as they were described by my tour guide in the Doge Palace in Venice. that being said a good read for travelers to Venice from an insider.
I thought this book was badly written, but then I found out that it was written in 1873, and since it was translated from Italian, it makes sense that it doesn't read very well. The author assumes that the reader already has a basic knowledge of the history of Venice, which I don't, so I wouldn't recommend it.
I got this book while visiting Venice. Definitely a very brief history. The book dives more into specific political figures instead of the bigger ideas and influences I was hoping for. The book was a quick read and offered a few useful bits of information.
It’s not a book for an average tourist, is full of political details and I had to search a lot to understand the concepts. I liked but I am sure some persons won’t dig in the history like me and will find difficult
