Lucky's Beach

Rate this book
New York Times bestselling author Shelley Noble takes her readers on another beach adventure where a young woman discovers the power of family and forgiveness.

School teacher Julie Barlow and her two best friends, Beth and Aggie, are looking forward to an adults only beach vacation. Julie also plans to use the time to figure out why her perfectly planned life has gone terribly amiss. They've barely hit the road when a frantic call from Julie's mother hijacks their best laid plans. Uncle Tony "Lucky" Costa is missing. Always entertaining, often irresponsible, never reliable, Uncle Lucky was a favorite with her friends. For Julie, for whom he'd been a sometimes surrogate father, not so much.

Her mother wants them to take a "teeny" detour to look for the irascible retired surfer. Julie makes excuses. After all, she was the one who decided she never wanted to see Lucky again. Overruled in this as she is in much of her life, Julie and her friends detour to Lucky's latest scheme, Lucky's Beach Bar and Grill. They find it tucked away in a quaint coastal town on the Delaware coast. With a crescent beach of white sand, large waves, plenty of tanned young men, a lively night life, it's a perfect beach getaway.

Beth and Aggie see good times ahead, Julie is determined to get through it as quickly as possible. But that will change as she gets to know Lucky's friends and confidantes. The taciturn bartender, the loyal housekeeper, the local fortune teller, the whole town shares a determination to protect him. But from what?

Soon Julie and her friends are swept up in an effort to save the town's--and Lucky's-- most closely guarded secret. And Julie begins to see her uncle in a new light.

Julie Barlow has a few things to learn about life--and love--and sacrifice. Her lesson begins this summer at Lucky's Beach.

There was a lot going on in this book and I think the overall story suffered because of it. I would have been fine with less of the plot revolving around Lucky. The story got too bogged down with the Lucky drama. I think I get what the author was going for but the execution just felt like a bad movie plot. I thought for sure when I picked this one up it would be a fun summer read but when you start feeling bored with the story and the book is over 400 pages, let's just say it was not a fun summer read for me.

It's the summer and Julie Barlow is headed to the beach with two of her best friends for a relaxing vacation. On the way to their destination, Julie's mom asks for a favor. She can't get a hold of her brother, Lucky, and she asks Julie to go check in on him to make sure he is okay. Even though Julie has been estranged from him for awhile, she agrees and is bummed it will cut into her vacation time. So Julie and her friends take a detour to the Delaware coastal town where Lucky owns a bar. Lucky isn't at his bar and the locals don't seem to want to share where he might be with Julie. What's going on?

I think there truly was an opportunity to have a good story with Julie's uncle but how it was written just felt weird and not realistic. If the very basics of the character and his relationship with his niece were kept intact but maybe come up with something else for the current story, I probably would have enjoyed this book better. Lucky was the downfall of the book which was unfortunate because I thought Julie was an intriguing character but just kinda got lost in the story and didn't get fully fleshed out. Julie and Scatter (yeah, I kinda cringed every time I read the name) had good chemistry and yet it felt like their interactions were minimal which was disappointing.

I don't really know how to describe this book. Is it a romance? Regular fiction? A mystery thriller? I think it tried to be a lot of things which was the problem.

I won a free advance copy of this book in a giveaway but was under no obligation to post a review. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

I love a good beach read. I love a characters that I have a connection with and can understand.
This was my first Noble book and I was so pleased to dive into this summer beach read. I read it right through to the end in one hot summer evening.
Thanks to William Morrow for this 4 star summer fun read.

Lucky's Beach was the first book by Ms. Noble I have read, and I liked it. I thought it was a good, light-hearted, easy to get into beach read. The main character is in a crisis, having always made choices about her life to make others happy, to the point that she isn't sure what she wants (personally or profesionally). To add interest, there is also some romance and mystery. I received this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

I did not realize until I updated my reading record that this is the 2nd time that I was lucky enough to receive a copy of a title by Shelley Noble as an “Early Reviewer” from Library Thing. My 1st enjoyment of the author's writing was in 2015 as I read "Whisper Beach."

School is in recess for summer vacation and 4th grade teacher Julie Barlow and fellow teachers and girlfriends Kayla and Aggie are about to begin their annual vacation time at the beach together before the start of other summer activities and responsibilities. As the girls are on their way to Dewey Beach, Julie's mother telephones and is frantic as she's on a nurses' cruise and has been unable to reach her younger twin brother. As they connect via phone calls every week Mrs. Barlow can't understand why he hasn't answered his phone or returned her calls. The girls promise to detour to check on Uncle Lucky formally named Tony Costa and as they try to track down the elusive uncle memories and mysteries surface.

It seems as though everyone in the small beach town knows Julie's Uncle Lucky. They also seem to be quite aware of Lucky's niece even though she hasn't seen her uncle in years. Though Uncle Lucky was a very important part of her world when Julie's father died she characterized her uncle as entertaining but irresponsible and she hasn't forgotten or forgiven him for broken promises as there was just one too many.

It's nice to think of a small beach town all pulling together to care for one another and this time it seems the town is protecting Uncle Lucky although Julie and her friends can't figure out who he's being protected from and why he would need protection. He's an aging surfer who apparently now owns a beach bar and grill. How dangerous can either be?

As Julie searches with her friends for Uncle Lucky she is confronted by memories that are different than the perspectives of her friends of times they all shared together after Julie's father died. As their search continues each young woman has decisions to make about their futures and with romance in the ocean air it seems as though this vacation is turning out differently than anyone could have anticipated.

I thoroughly enjoyed this "beach" novel as much as my 1st introduction to Shelley Noble's writing. As the author has written multiple "beach reads" as the heading offers on her website I look forward to enjoying more of her titles but I may not be able to wait until next summer to enjoy another one. I also viewed some historical mysteries on her website so I look forward to reading the Lady Dunbridge Mystery series too.

I finished Shelley Noble’s Lucky’s Beach and rated it ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ on Goodreads, only because there’s not an option for 3.5 ⭐️. This book is expected out June 30, 2020 and is definitely a beach read but it is also about finding who you are. Most of us at one time or another have made decisions based on what other people want or expect from us. Some of those decisions are small such as where to get dinner from and some of those are big such as what career we should pursue. It is hard to draw the line between advice and guidance and orders and pressure sometimes. Also when you love someone and they are family you generally don’t want to disappoint them.

Julie spends 10 days at the beach learning about herself and what she wants. She also learns that like herself the sleepy little beach town is not what it seems. Both Julie and Lucky’s Beach are so much more and better than first appearances.

I rated this book 3(.5) stars because there were secondary storylines I would have liked to seen developed more. I felt there were unanswered questions and personally I hate unanswered questions unless I know there will be another book to come that will pick up on those storylines. That said I think this book has something for everyone: some romance, lively dialogue, a bit of intrigue, and family relationships.

Grab your beach chair and sunscreen (please higher than the SPF 15 Julie, Aggie, and Kayla use), kick off your sandals, and settle in for an enjoyable afternoon at Lucky’s Beach.

Happy Reading!

Julie Barlow is having a crisis of heart - she needs this annual vacation to the beach with her friends so she can decide what to do. Then, her mom asks her to check in on her estranged Uncle Lucky, the man she once idolized but who let her down one too many times. Now, strange things are happening and she has been pulled in to a community and her uncle's orbit once more. Part mystery, part romance, and packed with an unforgettable cast of characters, this book will keep you turning pages to the end.

Main character, Julie Barlow, is heading off for a two week summer vacation with 2 of her best friends. As they are on their way, Julie’s mother calls and says she is worried about her twin brother....Uncle Lucky to Julie. Julie and her friends decide to take a little detour and go by where Uncle Lucky is supposed to be.
I really couldn’t get into the story. There is plenty of mystery going on and definitely some romance. Almost felt like there was TOO much going.
I recommend you give the book a go.....for others this could make for a great beach read.

Just an average poolside read… I agree with other reviews that there are too many characters in this book so it was hard for me to form an attachment to any. Being a teacher, I had high hopes for Julie, but I just never really connected with her. I would give this author another read because there were parts that I couldn’t put down- but overall- especially the ending- it was too all over the place.

You really shouldn’t judge people before you spend time getting to know them. Julie made assumptions about the people living at Lucky’s beach. She could tell they were hiding something about her uncle Lucky.Alex judged Julie based on the little girl he remembered from their childhood. Julie and her friends find a way to enjoy their vacation even while trying to figure out the truth about Uncle Lucky. Julie realizes that Lucky and Alex have changed her opinions of them and her past.

It was pretty good. I didn’t really like the ending, the two characters who were sort romantically involved the entire book weren’t confirmed to be together at the very end which was annoying. Overall good book.

Just okay

I was a bit disappointed with this book, but remain a fan of the author as I have enjoyed all of her other books. For me, this book just didn’t seem as cohesive as others. The characters and the plot didn’t feel complete. There were a lot of characters in the book, and the main characters seemed to need more substance.

Want to make a change but don't want to let everyone down?

A different kind of summer holiday story. A great teacher stifled by rules ...bought up to conform , meets up with her much loved but unpredictable and dare I say irresponsible uncle. A great read

A great story of family, love and forgiveness.

While on a vacation with her two childhood friends, Julie discovers her uncle's not as she expected. He's not just a surfer in search of his next great wave. He's involved with fighting wrongs forced upon children. His current band of characters have become his "family" over the years proving family is not simply determined by shared bloodlines, but experience, support, and dedication.

Julie knows something is familiar with Scat who's running her uncle's bar, but she can't put her finger on why. She finally figured it out and gains a new respect for him. She and her friends experience a vacation to remember.

I received a free ARC eBook from Net Galley and the publisher in exchange for my honest opinions.

What an amazing inspirational story that acknowledges that the best path is not always the safest or the securest. In this engaged story, Julie is dealing with an internal conflict that she can’t quite put her finger on. Only after stepping outside of her comfort zone is she able to see the life she was meant to live!

Thanks to Goodreads contest and William Morrow for the Kindle copy!
Fun romance/mystery story that is really about being true to yourself and listening to your heart rather than those around you.
Julie has always been the good, safe, conscientious child that her mother wanted. She chose a job in teaching because it was safe and reliable and had a good pension. But she doesn't feel fulfilled, something is missing. As she leaves for a two-week beach vacation with her friends, her mother asks her to check in on her uncle who they haven't seen in years and who didn't make the weekly check in call that he normally does. What Julie and her friends find is a small town that protects their own and a lot more action and adventure than Julie is used to. In the process, Julie finds her passion, some friends, and reunites with her uncle.

Julie Barlow is a teacher going on vacation with her two best friends who take a detour to check on her Uncle Lucky that she hasn’t seen in over six years for her mother. Things aren’t as they seem and the towns folks in Lucky’s Beach seem to be hiding something. A great read that doesn’t disappoint. I only hope Julies and Scatters story continues.

I found this book so enjoyable! What we have here is Julie, a 30ish women who doesn't like her job. She has no boyfriend. This all comes out in the beginning. She lives to please her mom. Her and her 2 bff's are heading for 10 days to the beach.

It is a jack of all trades. Theres mystery, romance, family drama, drama in general, sexy surfers, and a beach. Just beware of the shark breeding grounds!

There were so many characters in this book and they were so easy to remember because they were all so likable. There is so much going on and it's easy to get sucked right in to the story. These small town people of Luckys Beach have a secret to hide. Julie has a life to figure out, and I'm not all that sure they can co-exist in this beachy Delaware town.

Thank you to William Morrow Publishing for providing me a free copy through a goodreads giveaway.

This should be your new next beach read. 4 stars!

I really enjoyed this book. I had never read this author before, and had won this ARC. I really enjoyed the characters and the plot. Everyone was not quite as they appeared, and they all worked together for the people and the community. Will definitely read this author again, and I sure hope there is a sequel, there are so many stories left untold. Recommend.

A beach read about a beach. A little mystery, a little romance, about 100 pages too long.

I have really mixed feelings about this book. I really, really liked the atmosphere of the small village of Lucky's Beach; the beach and its surroundings are beautifully represented; the small town personalities, their loyalties and their foibles are warm and human. I liked Julie and thought she was an interesting character trying to find the courage and motivation to add more 'life' to her life. But, the plot itself didn't work for me. It seemed forced and contrived. I did like the ending where the future is left a bit ambiguous and I was left to wonder what was in store for these characters.

I received a copy of this book in a Goodreads giveaway.

I may not be the best judge of this since the romance genre is one of my least favorites, but I found this very formulaic and dull. I liked the main character, but she often seemed dumbed down, like she was making a concerted effort to relate to the people around her at pretty much all times. The plot left many things unexplained, and there wasn't a whole lot of background information given before new twists were thrown in out of nowhere. Overall, I was pretty unimpressed.

This book was good. Set during a summer vacation, three friends have to alter their plans, when they're beloved Uncle Lucky goes missing. They end up in a small beach town in Delaware and the mystery deepens. The story felt a little disjointed at times but I liked the characters and how they came together to help one another and helped out a family that was in trouble. This story had heart, friendship, a little romance and some excitement.

What started out as a relaxing beach read quickly morphed into a mysterious journey to find Tony aka "Lucky" Costa. Fourth-grade teacher, Julie Barlow is ready the school year to be over. She dreamed of becoming a teacher as she wanted to make a difference. However the prestigious school affords resume building rather than students valuing education. Running outside its doors, she contemplates never returning.

Pouring into the car with her two best friends, they head to the Dewey Beach for some sand, surf and socializing. Her mom's panicked calls leaves them on the coast searching for her uncle. Grudgingly their vacation is put on hold until they are lucky enough to find him.

Along the way, they are fortunate to meet a handsome characters to take their mind of their forced detour. Will the girls take a chance on love or fold their cards without a decent hand?

I enjoyed Shelley Noble's latest novel. Fortunately I love a good mystery so the fact that the story veered off course was a welcoming diversion. At times, I felt the story dragged out longer than needed and but I loved Julie's transformation.

DNF; couldn't get into this story. It didn't make sense that all these characters were vested in searching for someone who didn't want to be found. They'd rather search for some long-lost uncle than go on vacation...I don't think so.
