Autumn Sanderson goes by Lark now. No one in her new life can know who she was. No one from her old life can know where she is now.
Drowning in debt, Lark is desperate to land a job. When she finds herself at an interview for a mysterious company offering her an exorbitant salary, she jumps at the chance.
But things aren’t quite what they seem...
She soon learns of the company’s peculiar hiring process. Locked in a luxury cabin with five strangers who go only by their code names, Lark begins to question exactly what it is she signed up for.
The company, riddled with secrets and led by a cryptic boss known only as Mr. X, has strange rules and even stranger challenges for their candidates. After each day’s competition, the candidates gather around the dinner table to eat, drink, and spill their darkest secrets.
When Lark sees something she shouldn’t, she begins to ask questions, but soon gets a warning to stop. It’s obvious she’s in danger, but why? What does the company want? How much can she trust the others in the house? Trapped in the remote cabin with no technology allowed, Lark realizes she must take drastic measures to find out the truth.

Every now and then, I don’t feel like reading any of the books I have waiting to read, and look for something random. It’s hidden gems like this book that make the exercise worthwhile.
Autumn needs more money and a good job ASAP. She cares for her sick mother, and would love to be able to help her out even more. When she stumbles upon a mysterious job listing, she blows caution to the wind and applies. During the interview process, she doesn’t learn what the actual job is, where it’s located, who’s in charge...The only thing they tell her is that she’ll receive an annual salary of $500K. She’ll need to spend 5 days at a remote lodge with 5 other people who are applying for the job. They will all use fake names. They will have to give up their cell phones. There will be a series of challenges/tests to determine the one winner who will receive a job offer.
The day after arriving and participating in the first challenge, they gather to have dinner and are tested on a number of things that reveal dark secrets. Each day will be tougher than the last. Everyone is safe until one of the applicants leaves in the middle of the night...or did they disappear? Anyone can forfeit and leave at any time...or can they?
I found this to be an original take on a sort of locked room mystery, and couldn’t put this fast-paced book down as I tried (and failed) to figure out what was going on. I was very happily surprised.
Q: “Guys,... what the hell kind of job is this?” (c) Q: “An actress, a waitress, an IT tech, a PI and bouncer, a nurse, and a psychologist walk into a bar…” (c)
A sorta anticlimatic ending sort of didn't do it for me. Hm.... I must be a one spoiled reader.
Brilliant. A real page-turner, with interesting characters that I would have loved to meet in real life. I also loved that I had a wish for how it should end, and my wish came true. Will definitely read more from Modglin, this was an unique story that would make a great movie.
This page-turner grabbed my attention and kept me glued to my seat—until it didn’t. The plot is intriguing. Autumn is a woman running out of options. She is taking care of an ailing mother, working a dead-end job and facing an ever-mounting stack of bills. Her string of job interviews have been dead ends, and her self confidence is taking a beating. When she is informed that she has made it to round two of the interview process for a job that pays a cool half million a year, Autumn sees it as her last chance at salvation. This interview, however, will be like no other. The applicants who have made the first cut are taken to a remote location where they remain for five days, during which time they participate in challenges that will test their resolve. None know anything about the nature of the work or even the name of the company, and all proceed on blind faith. Autumn is suddenly faced with a dilemma that brings her face to face with the core of who she is and leads her to question how far she is willing to go in the pursuit of the almighty dollar.
So the plot was most certainly engaging and built suspense that was all encompassing. The characters were well-developed and believable, diverse in spite of their common goal. The let down was in the final reveal. Without spoilers, suffice it to say I found the climax and denouement rather ANTI-climactic and hugely disappointing. After the time invested in reading, and the rollercoaster of emotions, I just couldn’t swallow what Modglin was serving. The wrap up felt forced and seemed to count on an emotional response to carry it through. Absent that engagement, it, for me, fell flat.
Overall, a promising premise with a poorly executed conclusion. I could only manage three, overly generous stars.
I hate to do this to Kiersten Modglin, but this book is just terrible. The suspense is just not there. I didn't buy one second of it. And the twist to me was obvious. And the reward was a joke. This book is just awful, I don't see how anyone can give this above 3 stars. I want my time back I wasted listening to this audiobook.
Not to give anything away for the few that will still read the book, but if someone pulled this crap on my I'd be pissed. Hell I feel the author pulled a fast one on me tricking me into reading this book. LOL.
This is the second book in a row I've read where a group of people are basically trapped in a remote location. In Nine Perfect Strangers, they were at a spa. Here, they are competing for a job that pays half a million dollars a year.
This book has gotten rave reviews and I will admit the suspense factor is high. However, from the beginning, I couldn't help thinking it sounded like a so-called "reality TV show." I've never watched Survivor or Big Brother, but it certainly seems to be patterned on those type of shows.
I tried to get into it, but I simply did not like the main character. Her personality is all over the place. One moment she is self-effacing, the next she is confrontational. The author obviously tailored her character
After reading until 5:30 a.m. to finish this book (well, I said it was suspenseful), honestly, I was slightly disappointed when the actual job was revealed. Given the resources the organization obviously had, I could see them working on a much larger scale than they were.
The blurb on this was more thrilling than the book itself. The story was light on plot and heavy on mundane, painstaking details: we get a description every single day of what each character is wearing, where they sit in each room, etc. I found it really difficult to suspend my disbelief about the premise as well.
Aww, man. This book was SUCH a home run…until the big reveal at the end. I was SO hooked on this book after getting to know the characters. We had disappearing Claire, spineless Caleb, deceitful Vanessa, cocky Victor, hot-headed Lincoln and worrier Lark. With their descriptions, I felt like I knew them and was with them at the cabin, sitting in on their challenges. The questions they were asked gave great insight into their moral compass. Day Five’s dinner challenge was pure GOLD!! To prove their loyalty by telling a secret they learned about someone sitting at the table with them was a recipe for disaster, but it was EPIC!! Then Hannah Vega (and Luis) revealed their reasons for vetting the candidates like they did. It was in poor taste to have characters arguing, lying and manipulating to secure a JOB with a company that would PROTECT ABUSED WOMEN!! It suddenly felt like a mockery to abused women, and I felt slapped in the face. Obviously, I was once one of those women, so I’m speaking from experience. KMod turned a woman’s trauma into a fun game for the sake of a good book. For that, I can’t and won’t recommend this book to any traumatized Mujer.

I don't know how this author keeps coming up with all of these fantastic stories but I hope she never stops!! The Dream Job was haunting and exciting! The characters were great and the storyline was unlike anything I've read before.
This story was so unexpected!! I loved it. It had a unique storyline, with an array of different characters! It was twisted and suspenseful! Unputdownable!!
I think this is my favorite read by this author so far! The tension is palpable and suspense just oozes off each page. Kiersten has a way of creating characters who are so dynamic, it's effortless to both picture them and sympathize with them. Even though the plot lines are not similar, I was reminded of the classic short story "The Most Dangerous Game" because of the growing suspense and quiet dread on every page.
Despite having an MBA, Autumn is drowning in debt and is trying to care for her terminally ill mother. She feels hopeless and like her life is a dead end. Then luck smiles upon her as she finds herself interviewing for a job that is cloaked in secrecy...the name of the company and what is expected from Autumn are all unknowns. The only thing she knows is the annual salary, and the sum is life-changing.
Despite her misgivings, Autumn agrees to move on to the next phase of the hiring process, which means spending a week in an isolated cabin with five other applicants. Each day, the applicants, now given code names, must participate in bizarre challenges and share their darkest secrets with complete strangers. Autumn, now known as Lark, is afraid that the job she thought would be life-changing, is far more sinister than she ever could have imagined.
I had a hard time finishing this. For most of the book, I did not know what was going on. The story is told from Autumn, also known as Lark's perspective. She is one of 5 candidates for a mystery job. A job that would pay an over-the-top salary. Only problem is that none of the candidates are told what the job actually is. They are brought to a secluded spot to spend a week and participate in challenges. The challenges are really just questions. This is very far-fetched. Who would agree to go to a secluded spot, not even knowing what kind of job it is. And they all have to turn in their phones, no communication with the outside world. There is alot of drama between the candidates. But not much that I cared about. I kept forgetting who was who. The end and the explanation was pretty ridiculous.
I have read many books by this author and like most of them. This one just was not for me,
This is a hidden gem! I love everything I’ve read from this author. I read a review saying to go into it with no information so I didn’t really read the summary and I’m glad because this was not what I expected based on the title and just what I remember from adding it to my list long ago. I recommend doing that but if not..
Not spoilers but I wanted to give people the chance to opt out! I was expecting a new job full of backstabbing people but this ended up being a long job interview and it gave me Inheritance Games vibes but not YA.
The concept was great. Characters were great. I took one star off because I thought it ended a bit silly and unrealistically but there are only so many directions you could take that.
I definitely recommend. I wasn’t bored through any of it and I love that! Most books have a slump that you drag through at some point. I haven’t seen that with this author. She doesn’t mind to keep it shorter which is great because some authors write as if they’re trying to lengthen their book report at school and waste my time.
In 'The Dream Job', Autumn desperately needs a job to bankroll her mother's cancer treatments and keep a roof over their heads. When she is shortlisted by a secretive company, the prospect of earning half a million dollars a year spurs her to join an all-expenses-paid programme-cum-vacation at a secluded cabin but it's too good to be true..
Highly suspenseful and engaging, the story wasted no time in introducing Lark's (Autumn's given code name) rivals - Lincoln, Claire, Caleb, Victor and Vanessa. The rules (no cellphones, no electronics, etc), along with Elijah (the boss Mr. X's right-hand man) being tight-lipped about everything created a sense of ominousness.
The challenges didn't live up to and weren't quite what I had in mind. They did provide some background on the characters but characterization wasn't the book's strong suit. Vanessa had zero personality while Lark was all over the place. This excerpt described her perfectly:
"You're so naive, Lark, and wishy-washy. One moment you think we're in imminent danger and the next, when we find actual proof you could be right, suddenly you feel like you can trust everyone here."
There were pointless details (Lark's outfits and makeup, what food and drinks were served) and repetitive dialogues in lieu of logical actions. Despite Lark's concerns, she didn't snoop around more or turn her room upside down to ensure there weren't any hidden cameras.
Whilst I liked the twist , it was predictable. The big revelation, followed by the explanations were all underwhelming and required suspension of disbelief:
Overall, 'The Dream Job' kept its cards close to its chest, thus resulting in a gripping read. However, the characterization was deficient and the revelation felt out of left field.
Group of people interview for a job that offers 500k a yr but no one knows what the job is. They will spend 6 days at a secret location with no communication with the outside world for a extensive interview. None of the characters did anything for me. The main character got on my nerves with her sensitivity to everything. But the job at the end was interesting and different. I read The Arrangement and it didn’t do much for me either so it will probably be the end of the road for me with this authors work. Not enough fast action thriller for me.
Autumn is desperate for a job. Her hopes of getting a high paying job after moving to New York with her sick mother is shattered after many rejections. But when the call comes through, confirming her selection for the second round of a job interview which pays a humongous salary, Autumn jumps at the opportunity. All she has to do is spend a week at a lakeside resort and participate in the challenges set for her and her five competitors. If she wins, she will become an employee of the mysterious Mr.X.
The whole idea of the book was far-fetched and bizarre. Initially, I found it intriguing enough to keep going, then half way through the book, I wanted to dnf so bad. But just like Autumn who knew she didn't want to continue but can't just give up, I also persisted with the book. Atleast I found something relatable.
There was more drama than suspense. The plot and characters were all one dimensional. It didn't help that I figured out the potential Mr.X. The final reveal wasn't impactful. Overall, this was one book I wish I hadn't picked up. I just hope my next Kiersten Modglin book turns out to be better.
Spine tingling and haunting. This book grabbed me from page one and I could not put it down. It’s very rare that I am able to connect with almost every character in a book but Kiersten put so much into each character in such a way that their view of the world took you deep into their state of mind. You are them. You are there. You are terrified. She used one of the worlds biggest motivators, money, and created a twisted tale of terror and suspense in a situation that would be hard for most anyone to turn down BUT How far would go to obtain your dream job? This well written novel will have you asking yourself the same question over and over..... Would I have went that far?
The description of this book was far better than the book itself. I found it neither thrilling nor psychologically challenging. It was pretty unbelievable and the characters were predictable. I would leave this one on the shelf.
Ja meklè romànu, kurà ir trillera elementi, šim dotu 3.9⭐️, bet ja meklè trilleri, var nàkties vilties. Arî mani drusku autore apmułķoja, it kā visu laiku vazājot aiz deguna.
The story features Autumn. An academically accomplished woman who's struggling to pay of debts and is alsp taking care of her very ill mother. Autumn never had any luck in landing a job that has good pay until she received a phone call that she thought would make a big difference in her life. She was interviewed and was asked to be in a nice villa in the rural area of new york to do some task with the other applicants that will be used to assess their application. The company is very mysterious. The CEO is called Mr. X and the interviewers kept on reiterating that they value secrecy so much.
This is a locked-door thriller wherein the characters are locked in a villa to perform task. At first, things were going well. Coalitions are being formed until weird things began to happen.
At first, I just want to know if the job opening is real. Things took a sharp turn when the characters felt that they are in danger. I really enjoyed this mystery/thriller because of its unputdonwable character. It will keep the reader wanting more because the story was narrated with a lot of cliffhangers at the the end of every chapter.
I love the interview part in the book because it comes with a lot of witty answers to the tricky interview questions. These can honestly impress an interviewer because of how well-crafted the answers were.
As for the big reveal wherein Mr. X is supposed to meet the applicants, I was acrually on the verge of just skimming on the next few pages because I would love to know who Mr. X is, what kind of company he has and who will get the position. The plot twist was good because after all of the hype and build-up, the ending is quite different from Kiersten Modglin's usual. Over all, this is a 4 star read for me.
You know those awful team building retreats that companies have, imagine those but on steroids and instead of building a team it’s out to destroy any chance of one. Pitting you against the others, with challenges set to reveal all your vulnerabilities, in the hope of landing a highly paid job that will change your life.
Autumn/Lark has a mother who is dying from cancer and with no medical insurance her debts are spiralling out of control. On meeting the other candidates it turns out they are all desperate for their own varying reasons. Turning in their phones and miles from nowhere, one screams in the night and then goes missing and something is clearly very wrong. Feeling like an outsider and the only one seemingly concerned for the missing candidate Lark sets out to look for answers.
I read this as another buddy read with Amanda aka AJ Campbell author. Yet again my wild and crazy ideas were nowhere close to what was happening. The messages between us were mostly focussed around working out the identity of Mr X, the disappearance of candidate Claire and what the bloody hell was going on.
The ending was a masterclass in an intelligent twist, although I do know after finishing and reading other’s opinions it’s very divisive. But I Loved it with a capital L.
All Kiersten’s books are fast paced and that makes for an excellent buddy read. We normally do five chapters a day and it always seems to leave us on a cliffhanger. Perfect for a discussion and brainstorming ideas.
Every time I finish a book by this author it becomes my new favourite. This book contains a huge moral dilemma, what would it take for you to sell your soul to the devil? Personally I would sell mine for one of my mum’s roast dinners but not sure he would want it 😂 .
