Deadly Spells and a Southern Belle

Rate this book
Escape to Witch’s Forge, a magical town tucked deep in the heart of Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains.

Only Witch’s Forge isn’t a supernatural paradise—here spells backfire, kudzu bites and magic is broken.

That is, until Charming Calhoun arrives.

Charming has everything a Southern Belle could ask for—a thriving matchmaking business and great employees.

But when one of her employees goes missing in Witch’s Forge, she quickly realizes there’s something sinister afoot.

Once she arrives, Charming discovers a world of strange. Her house has a mind of its own—adding rooms and coughing up objects. There’s also a broomstick that likes to spank and a pot-bellied pig with an appetite for chocolate.

Then she butts heads with the local vampire chief of police.

What?

A handsome vampire cop in a town full of witches? Vampires and witches are mortal enemies.

But Charming better stay on the vampire’s good side because when someone winds up dead, everyone’s a suspect.

She’s got her work cut out for her. Can Charming solve the mystery and return to her old life?

Or will she discover that in the Smoky Mountains her life truly begins? And if so, can Charming survive long enough to enjoy it, or will she become the murderer’s next victim?

This is a new author to me, but what drew me in was the cover and the blurb, so I thought I’d give it a try and honestly, this book is a lot different to all the other witch books I’ve read in the last two weeks. I know that sometimes when authors write in the same genre that sometimes they tend to blend with the other books in that same category unless an author is able to create a whole different world to make it stand out to the rest. And I have to say that this time, Amy Boyles actually managed to do that, I love how this was so different to all the rest because for me, I’ve never known Witches, Wizards and Vampires to all mix together in the one community and that mainly being because Vampires aren’t exactly liked and also due to the fact that they feed off witches to try and be more powerful. However, the world that Amy has created is a lot different and quite intriguing and I have to say that I’m quite impressed with the story that was wrote. Whilst I did enjoy the story, I did find myself at times flicking through the pages because there would be a bit too much information when it wasn’t needed, but other than that I do think that everything else worked.
The one thing that I loved the most in this book is the relationship between Thorne and Charming, it was so interesting that you couldn’t help but want them to actually do something. They had the right chemistry and it was just amazing how frustrated they got with each other even though deep down they both knew they needed the other to help.
I think overall Amy did a great job and I’m excited to see what the next book will be like.
I would recommend giving this a try as it’s an unique read.

Charming is proud of her Matchmaking company, and she’s worked hard to get to where she is… She may not have as much magic as her celebrity mother does, but she has that small amount where she’s able to mix it with science and math in order to help her get the results she wants when it comes to her company. Everything is going fine, everything is on track until she receives a voicemail from her colleague Jimmy about something not being right over in Witch’s Forge, then after receiving a call from the Mayor of there stating that she needs to come over there to help save the town as Jimmy is missing, she has no idea what she’s about to step into. Will she be able to track Jimmy down before it’s too late and will she be able to save the town by finding a way to restore the magic???

Another fine start

If not for the intro to these characters in the "Lost Southern Magic" series, I never would have tried this book...and that would've been a real shame! Charming and Thorne are well-named and sufficiently engaging to coax the reader further into the series. Aunt Rose is a lovable handful, and mom Glinda seems like a lot of work. The murder mystery is a bit perfunctory; the true intrigue lies in the prophesy and whether it's being interpreted properly. The mayor has the potential to become a pest in her efforts to restore Witch's Forge to past glory, poor desperate Kimberly has both friend- and pest- potential, and the minor editing issues do not lessen the desire to become better acquainted with the town.

Witches and Vampires

When Charming Calhoun shows up in the broken town of Witches Forge, she thinks she can fix the problem with her matchmaking skills. She has no idea what she is really in for in this town. I enjoyed this book and all the fun it entailed. Iook forward to reading the next book.

It's hard to read a book when you don't like the main character. She is rude, selfish, doesn't like animals (big no no) and really doesn't seem to care that her "employee" is missing. Just making sure she can make matches. I can't even finish it.

This was so good, y’all!

I felt immediately pulled into the story and it stayed that way throughout the whole book. I connected with the main character Charming. The book is well written, the sentences are short and to-the-point, which totally fits Charming’s personality, she’s very systematic. Loves magical math. She’s a water witch with limited powers. Her mom however is a very powerful witch, making Charming feel inferior, like a constant disappointment to her mom. The one thing Charming IS good at, is matchmaking. But when she’s asked to do what she can in the broken magical town Witch’s Forge, where there’s a strict segregation between the different kinds of witches, things start to get really ugly. The mayhem starts! I loved the whimsical house, and Broom, and Pig, and I loved Aunt Rose! She’s fun! I even loved Charming’s mom, she was much softer towards Charming than Charming thinks, although I didn’t always love the conversations between Charming and her mom. Charming could be quite rude, especially to the vampire sheriff Thorne, but she has good reason to be. And sarcasm! This book was full of it, and I loved it!

This book had that pageturner-ability, where you just want to read it all in one go, but you kind of need sleep too. But who cares about sleep when you have a good book like this! It was so entertaining and imaginative!

I did know whodunit about halfway through, but luckily that didn’t detract from my immense enjoyment of this book! I will for sure continue on with this series!

I really enjoyed this book. Charming Calhoun thinks she is a witch with very little powers and her mother (a famous witch) tells her that all the time. However, she is brilliant at math and has turned that expertise into developing a matchmaking formula that never fails. She has been hired by the town of Witch's Forge to save their town by matchmaking their witches into happiness - or something like that.

Only Witch’s Forge isn’t a supernatural paradise— magic is broken, the town is dusty and even the overgrown kudzu bites! Her best employee was sent there to start the work but now he's missing. And when Charming arrives she realizes there’s something sinister afoot. The mayor says she will be staying in the house where her employee was but it's actually the old courthouse and it has a magic mind of its own!

Then she crosses the path of the town chief of police - who's a vampire - in a town full of witches. Vampires and witches are mortal enemies.

So Charming, with the help of a few relatives, a strange broom, and a pig needs to solve the murder, find her employee so she can get out of town. Or does she really want to leave?

Matchmaking magic begins!

An amazing start to a new witchy mystery series! I've read other series by this author and this one is my favorite of the first books in the series. We don't have the usual FMC has to leave her terrible old life situation, because Charming already has a successful matchmaking business going. We get to be thrust into the new setting of Witches Forge right away, and I found it fascinating. The characters instantly grabbed me, and there are so many things to uncover in this town that I can't wait for the next book! The ending wrapped things up rather quickly and I was a bit surprised, but there are still more things to discover.

A good paranormal mystery series starter.

Charming Calhoun arrives in Witch’s Forge to find her missing employee. Jimmy was supposed to matchmake witches and warlocks in this town where magic is broken but something happened and he disappeared instead. Charming has a bad feeling and to make everything worse – the chief of police is a vampire! She hates vampires!

This story is well-written and quite enjoyable. There is humor, mystery, and a possibility of romance in the future. I liked the plot and want to read more in this series. Loved Pig and Broom!

First time reading this author, and the main reason I read it was for a book challenge...read a book with a rhyming title. However, it was kind of cute. Charming is a matchmaker for witches, but when she travels to a small witch town in Tennessee. she discovers that it has a curse on it. It is, basically a dying town. No matter what kind of spells they try, they all backfire on them. When her employee goes missing, Charming calls in for help, which brings in her mom and aunt. And what is a group of vampires doing acting as the law in a witch town?

Great start to this series! Charming has to head to Witches Forge when her employee there goes missing. Her company has been hired to be match makers to help bring back the town. Things for Charming do not start off great when she learns the sheriff is a vampire – they have some snappy dialogue! Charming learns more about the town and her own history when her mother comes to town to help look for Jimmy. Love the way the ending rolled out to solve the mystery. Looking forward to the next story!

A fun cozy paranormal mystery

I loved this story. Charming Calhoun is a weak witch who runs a very successful matchmaking business.

When her employee goes missing when on assignment in Witch's Forge, Charming goes in to find him and finish the job, soon joined by her aunt, Rose and her mother, Glenda.

There are Magical houses, mandrake caves, vampire police, lots of witches, and a super cute potbelly pig in a great murder mystery.

A laugh-out-loud paranormal mystery with a bit of romance thrown in

This was a treat. A witch named Charming and a vampire named Thorne come together to solve a mystery and save the town. Charming is a matchmaker that doesn’t seem to recognize the tension between her and Thorne.

Cute beginning to a new series for Amy Boyle. I gave it five stars not for the great writing though the dialogue is very well done but because of its pure entertainment value. It was fun, humorous and compelling and worth the five stars for that alone!

A very entertaining read!

Charming Calhoun is a matchmaker for witches. She takes a job in Witches Forge, a town that is cursed and slowly dying. The more she finds out, the stranger the town becomes to her. Amy Boyles is a wonderful writer and I’ve enjoyed every book by her that I’ve read.

I was new to this author but anticipate a long relationship. Charming, a witch, runs her own matchmaking company. When her employee disappears, she travels to a town filled with supernaturals and ran by a handsome vampire. There's mystery, intrigue, romance and plenty of humor.

I loved that the magical town was in the Smoky Mountains. The characters were interesting and the relationship with Charming and the vampire(who is the Chief of Police) is fun. Will be interesting to see what happens in the next book of the series.

The matchmaker witch

In this book Charming is a witch with few powers who was from a very powerful witch family. She has a matchmaking business and sends her employee to a town but he ends up missing. She learns more about her powers and family. I loved this book by Amy Boyles.

Fun story!

I like this book. The main character is just trying to do her job, but lots of roadblocks get in the way as she discovers things about herself while solving the Perth town didn't know it had. Very entertaining!

Really cute story. I’m so interested in how the vamp and the witch will end up together and how her magic will grow. The aunt and pig are funny additions and I’m glad the mother/daughter relationship is improving. I’ve saved the other books in the series.

A Delightful Surprise

This book is funny and extremely creative. There are plenty of characters to like. Although i did figure out the villain early, 99% of the rest of it was a complete surprise. I am anxious to read more in this series. 😊

Mystery with a touch of romance

I enjoyed this, the first book in this short series. I'm very intrigued to see where things are going with Charming and Thorne. And the pig and Aunt Rose are a riot.

This is a fun read, the start of a series. Charming is a witch without many powers. She's looking for a missing employee of hers. She runs into a vampire sheriff; her aunt and mom come to help (?); she is gifted with a broom that spanks those who do wrong and given a tiny pig that loves cookies. They all work together to find her missing employee and solve a mystery. An enjoyable story.

Virtual Voice is not good. There is so many things missing with virtual voice that it makes this horrible. It was robotic and cold. I will read the rest of them and never listen to another virtual voice book again.

The story itself was cute.
