The man who wants everything gets nothing...

July 1755

War is brewing between England and France. Impressed into the Royal Navy, Lieutenant Merrick, against all odds, advanced through the ranks to become an officer—but he is not a gentleman. A man with a tainted past from a traitorous family, cast down by King George—a stain no man can remove.

Merrick’s thrust into the role of captain, when the HMS Boudica is attacked by pirates off the coast of Nova Scotia. On a captured enemy vessel he discovers a King’s ransom in treasure and a woman chained in the hold from passenger ship that mysteriously disappeared at sea.

Beautiful, defiant, and hell bent on revenge, India makes a deal with Merrick to uncover the pirates’ scheme, promising him everything he desires: fortune, glory, and the chance to bring honor back to the McKesson name.

Now, they race against time to uncover a plot that links those in the highest ranks of the British aristocracy, to a failed rebellion that is once again trying to topple the monarchy and place an old pretender on the throne. But all that glitters is not gold as passions stir and an impossible love blooms, threatening to undermine all Merrick and India have done to protect their King and a country on the brink of war.

Wow! What an amazing book. It is easy to give this book five stars, and I’d add a plus symbol, a thumbs-up, and a hive-five as well.

I love American fiction from this period, which is to say, the colonial, French and Indian War, and the Revolutionary War times, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. My compliments also on a fantastic book cover.

Man of War begins off the coast of Newfoundland in June of 1755. A man of war is a heavily armed ship. The title of the book does double-duty, referring to the main character of the book as well. The story begins with a violent battle between two ships. The HMS Boudica has been attacked. Its captain succumbs to fatal injuries in the opening pages. Our hero, Lieutenant Merrick McKesson becomes Captain in an instant, and his superior officer’s final words were, “Stop those French bastards. You’re ready, my friend. Since the day I brought you on this ship, I knew you lusted for my queen. Lead the men. Show them you are no traitor. Remember, for King and Country, always.”

Our main character is short, stocky, and has “a mop of red hair.” He is also smart, strong, and driven. His troublesome past meets a challenging present, and we’re off on our literary adventure.

Before starting the book, the author provides several diagrams that are enormously helpful, especially to those of us who aren’t completely familiar with the parts of a warship. These exhibits include a picture titled, “The Anatomy of a Mast.” That is followed by a diagram of the Boudica, sliced lengthwise, and after that, we are provided several floor plans showing the layout of the decks. This was very useful in helping picture where much of the action of the book took place. With apologies to Captain Merrick, perhaps the Boudica is our protagonist.

The damsel in distress is so much more than that. She is a tragic figure who has endured unspeakable atrocities. When the men of the Boudica emerge victorious in the opening battle, we meet Caroline, who is chained in the hold of a sinking ship. She is hard to love, and she is not what she seems, yet we are drawn to yearn for her success. I don’t want to spoil any surprises, but I promise you, this character will take you on a journey.

This is a monster novel; a beast of a book. It is full of adventure on the high seas, packed with complex, riveting drama, and an engaging, intricate plot. The pace is fast-moving. The characters are richly portrayed, full of angst, and their nuances are revealed to us, bit by bit as the pages unfold. It is a thriller, and there’s plenty of romance in the pages as well. As if that weren’t enough, the author has created a floating world at the dawn of the French and Indian War. This novel is everything you could want in a book.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. If I had paid top dollar for this book, I would have been impressed with the entertainment value it delivered. I feel like I read an action-thriller, a drama, a romance book, a war story, and a historical novel all within these pages. I’m going to add the rest of the series to my TBR list.

Final note, the author warns, “This book does contain graphic content and depictions of war.” It is called Man of War, after all. Also, I would mention that there is graphic, sexual content as well, so you must know that before you choose this book.

I don’t read a lot of historical fiction, because it pains me to read about the poor treatment meted out to women during this time. However, now and then I come across one that calls to me. I read several glowing reviews for the previous books in the series and had plans to pick them up. When I learnt that 🎧︎Man of War was the prequel to the series, I thought, what better place to start? I am so glad I gave it a chance as 🎧︎Man of War by T. J. London more than delivered. Steeped in history, 🎧︎Man of War served up action, adventure, suspense, intrigue and romance.

This was my first experience with London’ s work. Despite this being a long book, at almost 23 hours’ worth of listening, there was never a dull moment. From the first chapter, the story consumed me with its multi-faceted and complex characters, intriguing plot and stellar narration.

I won’t go into much detail as it’s my belief that 🎧︎Man of War is a story that one should go into blindly. I will mention, however, that the main characters, (Merrick and India), won my heart. From their heartbreaking pasts to their current struggles, one could not help but feel empathy for them. Their resilience, determination and chemistry shined throughout the story. Merrick’s need to restore his family’s honor, India’s desire for revenge against the persons responsible for the loss of her virtue, and their romance drove the story. The secondary characters, some of whom were likeable and some not so much, brought their own blend of intrigue to the story.

🎧︎Man of War is filled with excitement from start to finish. This is one of those stories where the suspense has your heart jumping in your throat. It will keep you on your toes while you hope nothing happens to your favourite characters. The story was far from predictable and had me guessing at the outcome. This may have been a fictional story, but London’s vivid descriptions, attention to detail and weaving in of historical events gave the story an authentic feel.

I read and listened to 🎧︎Man of War, and the narration blew it out of the water. Absolute perfection. The sound effects gave the story a natural feel. This combined with the voices of the narrators made the narration absolute perfection.

A story of delightful proportions, 🎧︎Man of War will take you on a journey filled with adventure on the high seas, political intrigue, revenge and romance. If you enjoy historical fiction this book is not to be missed.

REVIEW

What we have here, my fellow readers, is a shining example of what a prequel should be. All the bits mentioned in the first three books of the series that hinted at the recent past, are brought forth with all guns firing, striking a mizzen mast hit on the reader's heart. If I were to describe the book in one word - passion. The passion of a crew's loyalty to their ship and captain...the passion of a man's political leanings...the passion of brothers torn asunder by hatred...the passion of brothers torn asunder by war...the passion of lust and love. Yes, my peeps and fellow travelers, the author has created some very passionate people and events, none more so than the mysterious India/Caroline. Headstrong, and determined, she had me, on the one hand, rooting for her cunning, while on the other hand, yelling at her to listen to Merrick for once. Enjoyable, entertaining, and enlightening on all things McKesson/Carlisle....and the emergence of the future evils of DeLancie, and Celeste....step aboard Merrick's Queen, The HMS Boudica; adventure awaits.  5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Man of War
T J London
Rebels & Redcoats Prequel
TJ’s Man of War is a non-stop action-packed nail-biting tale full of patriotism, heroics and barbarism featuring battles at sea and staring a large cast of unforgettable characters. The main protagonists the star-crossed lovers of Merrick and India/Carolyn are both larger than life. Carolyn is ahead of her time a ravaged beauty who wants to be known for her integrity and intellect and Merrick is running from his past and his family’s disgrace while longing for someone to love him unconditionally.
If there’s one word that keeps coming to mind in the Man of War novel it’s authenticity, the narrative is full of authentic seaworthy terms and descriptions of the workings on a ship of that era, it’s also full of authentic period perfect items of clothing and vocabulary that would be used by people of that time period. Then there are the characters some good some evil but all authentic and listeners who enjoyed TJ’s Rebels and Redcoats novels will easily identify the names of the characters in this novel.

As in all TJ’s Revolution novels she’s not shy about her brutal content but it’s apparent that it’s not used for shock value, it’s used for character building/development and especially for realism. If you’re a fan of no holds barred historical novels staring realistic, arresting characters than Man of War is for you.

Narration:
The full cast of narrators is the absolute best, each voice fits the character both emotional and substantively and listeners will enjoy each and every narrator.

Against all odds a man with a dark past and a disgraced family rises to the rank of Captain in His Majesty’s Navy when in the summer of 1755 the HMS Boudica is attacked by French pirates killing her captain and making Lieutenant Merrick Ship's Captain. Merrick spent his whole life trying to atone for his oldest brother’s traitorous behavior colluding with the French and supporting the Jacobite cause and now maybe just maybe the tides have turned in his favor. During the battle Merrick rescues a nude woman bound by irons in the hold of the Pirate ship and he knows she’s not being totally honest about who she is and how she ended up at the mercy of French Pirates.
During her torture Caroline often wished she would die but once the ship she was on started sinking she knows she wants to live, scars and all, to enact revenge on her evil tormentor and all those involved in her abduction and abuse. Thankfully she’s rescued by a handsome captain and decides he’s the one she needs to convince to help her. Now she’s just got to come up with a plan without disclosing too many of her deepest secrets and hopes she’s found more than just a rescuer in her hero captain.

I guess it's good that's it's Friday because I am courting a massive book hangover today! I stayed up late last night to finish up Man of War by TJ London and it was totally and utterly worth it! I will apologize upfront because there is no way my review will do this book justice.

I am a huge fan of London's Rebels and Redcoats series and have loved every book, but I think this one might be my favorite yet! The series has everything that makes a historical novel perfect - history, action, adventure, romance, and intrigue. The book kicks off instantly with action as Merrick and his men battle the French aboard the British ship, the HMS Boudica, and Merrick becomes Captain when the last one perishes in the fight.

When we meet Caroline she is being held prisoner in the hull of the ship after being kidnapped while on her way to meet her betrothed, horrifically treated by her captors and shackled. She is rescued by Merrick and his men and he promises to help bring her abusers to justice.

What London does best is to create characters that are multi-faceted and complex - they aren't black and white/good or evil. They have flaws which make them easier to relate to and to endear yourself to. Merrick and India were amazing characters! Merrick is hardened but with a big heart who is making the best out of the life that was thrust upon him.

"I never wanted to be a warrior. I should like to have known peace, but that was not my destiny."

Caroline/India is a fascinating woman - tough yet vulnerable, and stubborn as all hell, which I loved about her but dang that woman could be frustrating! Ha!

"There's no winning for a woman. Without her virtue, she's nothing, but when it's stolen from her, she is even less-even in death."

The secondary characters are just as intriguing, and of course, the HMS Boudica is a character all in herself. And what a ship she is!

London's writing is always stellar but this book is next level amazing! The amount of research she did just on the Naval ship alone must have been staggering!

I could not love this book more and highly, highly recommend this entire series! I could see this book being a fantastic movie. Paging Netflix!

Captivating, bold and absolutely brilliant T.J. London created a story with a uniqueness that will leave me reeling for days!!

With a full cast narration, I was taken to the HMS Boudica with Merrick as my captain and India as my muse. She captivated me from the moment she appeared on page with her strength and determination to never become the woman she was before she was rescued. With nail biting grit and battles at sea I never thought a historical fiction novel would be the book that I can't stop raving about for 2023 but here we are.

I've seen dozens of reviews that will give you the breakdown of what happened with this book, but I don't want to do that. What I want my review to convey is how much this story enthralled me and took me on a journey the likes of some of my favorite war time movies do.

Full cast narrations are some of my favorite narrations because when a conversation is going on you feel like you are there and present which Man of War had but what made this story so unique was London's words. The way she was able to make you feel the outrage India was feeling when Merrick would absolutely shatter her plans of revenge. What about the raw moments when Merrick was sharing about his childhood you could hear the vulnerability captured in the narrator's words, but those words would not have been able to be captured so well if it weren't for T.J. London and the words she put to page.

That's all I've got on Man of War. I was consumed by this book from the moment I hit play and that feeling of beautiful anticipation never ceased until the very last word was uttered. Since I did start this series with the prequel next up for me is The Tory where I can't wait to be spellbound again by the beautiful words of the talented T.J. London.

This was great! I really enjoyed the first two books in the Rebels and Redcoats series so when I was offered an opportunity to listen to the prequel, I jumped at the chance. This book is a prequel, so it works fine as a stand-alone even though some characters will pop up again later in the series. Once I started listening to this book, it didn’t take very long before I was hooked. I really had a fantastic time listening to this historical fiction novel filled with fantastic characters.

I loved India and Merrick. At the start of the story, India goes through some horrific things and comes close to losing her life before Merrick is able to rescue her. She proved to be incredibly resilient because I doubt many would have been able to handle things as well as she did. Merrick had his own challenges after finding himself captaining a warship after the death of his superior. I liked these two together and thought that they complimented each other quite well.

The story had plenty of excitement. They wanted to bring the individuals responsible for harming India and killing others to justice. They didn’t always agree on how to go about things but they usually had the same goals. There were several plot threads that kept me guessing and enough action to keep the story moving forward.

The narration was phenomenal. As good as the story is, it is the narration that takes everything to the next level. There is a large cast of characters in the story and this group of narrators did an amazing job in bringing them to life. I loved that there were some sound effects in addition to the narrators’ voices and thought that it helped take the production to the next level. I really liked all of the voices used and thought that the narrators did a wonderful job of adding just the right amount of emotion into their reading.

I would definitely recommend this book to others. This book had everything that I was looking for: a great historical setting, wonderful characters, a compelling romance, action and adventure, and a mystery that kept me guessing. I cannot wait to read more of this author’s work in the future.

I received a digital audiobook review copy of this book from Caffeinated PR.

A colorful, daring, and masterful saga of books set during time of war that divided a nation and families grasps the listener by the throat and eviscerates the emotions. One does not simply read or listen to the Rebels and Redcoats stories, but one is caught up in them. One is glad to not have missed the experience from start to stop.

Imagine my excitement when the author steps back from the John Carlyle and Dellis McKesson thread to go back in the past about twenty years and gives a prequel Age of Sail adventure for Merrick and Caroline. While this is a prequel that published after the series started, it can be enjoyed read first or where it falls in publishing order.

Man of War takes the adventure from land to sea and I was euphoric about that because I love Age of Sail military stories (thank you, CS Forester and Patrick O’Brien). But, the life aboard a sailing vessel was what really had my spirit soaring. It was lushly painted and was visceral in description so I felt Boudicca was another major character.
The opening scenes are a sea battle between British Navy and French pirates. Merrick’s ship loses the captain and he’s promoted. He finds aboard the French ship, a shock- a naked woman who had been tortured and was shackled below decks. He knows she is full of secrets and not broken in spite of her body and what was done. She wants vengeful justice against those who did this to her and were behind it happening. Being given a new lease on life, Caroline takes on a new name, India, and learns as they fight together that Merrick has his own past hardships and can relate to her feelings and her need.

The book is not a short one, but it is so full and epic that one doesn’t feel the time pass. This pair consumed me and the historical setting they moved in along with the Boudicca ship life were as vibrant and fascinating. Just after the Jacobite Rising during Georgian era England and the French and Indian War, powerful people made big moves and the pair, Merrick and India, were caught up in others machinations.

As many know who have followed my past reviews of the series, I get squeamish and have to take breaks when I listen to these stories. The author pulls no punches when it comes to heartbreak, social injustice, physical hardship including rape, torture, and the atrocities of war. Never gratuitous, but another way to bring a clear-eyed historical view rather than a romanticized and sanitized version of events.

This is fiction, but the flaws and foibles as well as strengths are demonstrated so the characters feel like real people. Shades of gray permeate many figures, but oh yes, there are some who are dyed in the wool black hearts. The path through trouble to the other side is never easy and the characters have a hard fight to reach the calm waters. Loved, the epilogue incidentally.

As to the narration team, this was a full cast (including sound effects) program. Many were familiar voices and some new for this story. They didn’t miss a beat and I was well-pleased with the voice actors for each part. I’ve gotten used to full cast editions and feel spoiled by the rich experience and how much more impactive the story becomes. I would look forward to seeing any of them narrating other books and more from this series, of course.

If my gushing on and on didn’t clue one in, I thought this was abso-fab. I need to recover from this one and consider it one of my best books of the year that is barely half over. Historical Fiction lovers need to snatch up this series and most certainly in audio for the best experience.

I rec'd an audio copy from Caffeinated PR to listen to in exchange for an honest review.

Bravo London!
Man of War is a brand new masterpiece from TJ London!

Like always, London’s characters are rich in depth and realistically painted.

Merrick: our male lead is a complete polar opposite from the male lead, John in the original saga. I love this, because the author never writes any male character the same way. Merrick comes from a broken home, with family wounds that still haven’t healed. His sense of duty and honor make him into a lovable and enchanting person. He’s not the heartless, bully, love interest with a jerk mentality. He’s compassionate and selfless and wants to be a hero. There was something wonderful about Merrick, something new. He was everything he presented himself to be. Beautifully broken.

India/Caroline: your heart will break for this girl and what her journey takes her through. It took a while for her to grow on me at first, only because she was constantly stumbling into more trouble. However, once you submerge yourself in the story and truly put on her shoes, you begin to see the merit in everything she does. I loves her progression. Her growth was the root of the plot and empowering to watch.

The villains: there are always a few in a London book, another thing I adore. Because I’m life there isn’t always just one antagonist. Usually there are a few and they vary in how threatening they are. Let me just say, like usual, the villains in this book scare me. I legit feel a sense of terror when they are on the page and that keeps the story engaging.
Our antagonist is clever, meaning our protagonists need to be cleverer still.

Plot: the overall plot is braided into multiple other plots. Meaning: there is no boring moment. This book also gives a WHOLE NEW LOOK on the saga! This is the backstory, the start of the tale that entwines theses people.

This history!!! OH THE HISTORICAL GOODNESS!!!! This woman weaves into her stories anything from major events to the smallest detail of the era, giving us a beautiful look at life in the 1700s. Honestly, writing historical IS world-building, just like in fantasy. You have to build a view for the reader and paint an environment that is not 2020. You have to show us how people used to think, you have to follow the rules of life according to that time.

The romance: so undeniably intense and fated. These two FEEL like the power couple of the century. The Love is instant on one end and a slow burn on the other and the trust built is everything!

**You don’t have to be a follower of the Rebels and Redcoats Saga to read this book. It’s a perfect standalone. You could read it before or after the others.

Man of War
The Rebels and Redcoats Saga Prequel
By: T.J. London
Narrated by: Nicholas Boulton, Kathryn Vinclaire, Patrick Zeller, John Hartley, Tara Langella, Jason Clarke, Dryw McArthur, Marnye Young, James Cheatham

What a listen! Full cast, and a historical novel that is captivating. I loved the first two in this series, so was excited to see the prequel coming to audio. This book is phenomenal. This book is a complete standalone, but coming off the other two books, I was looking forward to seeing what motivated the devious Merrick. Nothing like what I anticipated. He unexpectedly becomes Captain of the ship he is on, and stumbles upon the prisoner being held. Caroline is a handful, misunderstood, and dangerously independent.Making a deal with Merrick may be the key to her freedom. Incredible chemistry between these two blossoms into more. But this is so much more than a romance. It's a carefully woven story, detailed with historical facts and an epic battle to find out who did this to Caroline and seek justice. Exciting, suspenseful and a cast of integral secondary characters, TJ London has created another masterpiece that kept me intrigued. Don't let the length convince you not to grab this epic saga, the time flies by and before you know it, you have an incredible book hangover! Grab this one!

Full cast narration creates a movie in your mind as the performances begin. Nicholas Boulton, Kathryn Vinclaire, Patrick Zeller, John Hartley, Tara Langella, Jason Clarke, Dryw McArthur, Marnye Young and James Cheatham each lend their voice to this story, creating amazing imagery of battles, love scenes and every day life in the life of 1700's. I cannot say enough good things about this perfectly picked cast. They pulled me in and refuse to let me move on! It's that good.

Merrick and Caroline's story captivated me from the very beginning.

From the moment he sets eyes on the woman chained in the hold of the Culloden, she is a distraction. Despite the degradation she has suffered, she is defiant and flouts his authority at every opportunity. Every encounter between them is tinder to a bonfire, with both of them tamping down the smolder of attraction with barbed insults and injured pride.

When the powder keg is thrown overboard, the destruction it leaves in its wake is unavoidable. They are forced to confront the inevitability and impossibility of what lies between them.

I became wholly immersed in this meticulously researched novel. I felt like I was standing on the deck of a frigate during a ferocious storm, and witnessed the political machinations that occurred on the fringes of a perfectly executed minuet.

This was my first novel by this author, but it certainly won't be my last. I cannot wait to read the rest of the Rebel and Redcoats Saga.

Five stars.

This is a prequel set about 20 years before The Tory. This mainly follows Dane Merrick and Caroline's (India) story. What an explosive beginning to start out this story. Caroline is a the King's consorts favorite daughter and is sent to America to get marry and has a large dowry, but her ship gets taken by pirates. The ship HMS Boudica that Dane is on defeats the ship Caroline was held captive on and rescue's her but in turn due to events Dane becomes a new captain. So many underlying story threads in this one as we learn more about Dane and his family. Towards a bit by the end we are introduced to some of the characters from The Tory and The Traitor. The writing was very thorough and researched for the book. Loved it. I can't wait for The Turncoat next!

The narrators were perfect for their characters. Very well done and seamlessly done in duet style.

I'm completely blown away but how much this book impacted me and made me fall in love with the author and her work. This is a depiction of war and 1755.
There are some trigger warnings for rape, sexual activity and War type crimes.
We open on the HMS Boudica while the current captain is dying. Merrick is in the process of trying to save the ship he has grown to love and the men in it. They are taking fire from an enemy ship and he has to act fast. He quickly jumps to action as the ship's acting captain and his men rescue the hostages on the enemy ship and find some prisoners on board as well. This is the first time Merrick comes into contact with the lady shackled to the wall in the cellar of the enemy ship. He can't get her salvage look out of his mind or the blue eyes that he warned to instantly.
Caroline (India as she calls herself) is a lady who is on the wrong ship with her dowry to meet her awaiting husband in New York. She is taken prisoner by horrible men and before it's over she wishes she dyed like all the others on board. However, Captain Merrick and his brother Stephen are going to rescue her whether she wants them to or not.
What ensues is a battle on ships and lands to find out what happened to India, who did this, and how to seek revenge. This epic battle is exciting, fast paced and everything a reader looks for in an amazing war time story. This is my first read of this saga but I assure you, I will be going back to read the first three books very soon. I applaud this author for the research of this time period. I'm so excited to share this book with all of you. I hope you decide to pick it up.

I don't normally read anything out of my normal genre: Regency Romances. This book, though, has captivated me from the beginning. Who can put down a book with sea battles, tall (masted) ships, sexy Scottish captains, and intrigue to match? This reader couldn't.

The background of the story starts in Scotland at the Battle of Culloden (not really mentioned in the book but implied). This endeared me to the H because my family may/may not have taken part (on the side of the Scots) at Culloden. It made the story personal to me. Though, I would have liked to read more into that part of the story. Back to the H. What also endeared me to the character was...you may have guessed it already...he's a ginger! He is always trying to do the right thing...sometimes, ultimately failing.

The h, I have to admit, if she was a real person -- she would be my hero. She is a strong, resilient woman. She has lived through the worst possible situation and survived through her own force of will. She is the back bone of the entire story.

I would recommend this book to those who like movies like: Master and Commander or books like: "The Fox and the Faith", "The Fox and the Fury", "The Fox and the Flag", and "The Fox and the Fortune".

I give this book a full 5-stars.

I was surprised to learn there would be an audio version of the new addition to the Rebels & Redcoats Saga .   Man of War is a prequel to the series.  I truly wish I had read the blurb before reading, so I would know the setting was about 20 years before The Tory which happens right around 1776. I kept trying to figure out how this story fit in and especially characters with the same names to ones I have read in The Tory and The Traitor.

I don't read a lot of historical fiction because then I always want to know what really happened.  I do seem to enjoy settings during the Revolutionary or Civil War though.  Of course, there are exceptions to this generalization.  The typical white male property owners having the power and doing some truly horrible things is very true here.  I was in great suspense throughout worrying about characters I cared about being hurt, most likely brutally hurt.

The plot underlying the romance is the supporters of a previous King, using theft and debauchery to raise money to defeat the current King and try to reinstate the previous one.  So when the current King, sends his favorite consort's daughter, to America to marry with a large dowry, the ship and dowry are confiscated.   She is raped and tortured to try to get her to sign papers saying they are already married so they can kill her and take the money.

The thieves run into an English navel warship which captures them and saves her.  She gives her name as India. The captain of the ship is killed, with the new captain being Merrick.  The King took all the titles, land and money from his family when Merrick was a teen because his older brother, James, was one of those plotting to go back to the former King.  Merrick and his other brother, Stephen, turned in James, but the whole family was punished. Merrick was forced into service in the navy.

India and Merrick have both been treated savagely but Merrick has had time to grow and adjust to his circumstances, worked hard and risen within the naval hierarchy.  India's changes have just happened.  Merrick recognizes her strength and they had a kindred spirit in survival.   They work together to figure out who and why she was hurt.

Merrick keeps trying to protect India, and she wants to be involved in the discovery of the villains. It IS very dangerous and India really takes some terrible chances.   Even once the villains are known, evidence must be found and the villains captured.    In spite of the villains mostly getting what they deserve, some of them escape and some of the "good guys" die, and both Merrick and India suffer fallout from the whole mess.  I was grateful to see their happiness in the end.

Narration:
The large cast did a great job with the narration.  Many of the narrators were new to me, but some are in the series going forward.  I appreciated the distinct voices for many characters which made it easy to understand what was happening.  We primarily have Dane and Caroline's point of view.  The voices seem appropriate for the different regions and accents.  I was able to listen at my normal 1.5x speed.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Star Book

{This book was received from the Author TJ. London , in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.}
 .
Man of War is the next installment from the revolutionary historic author TJ London. Book four and a prequel to the adored Rebels and Redcoats Saga.
London has once again delivered another masterpiece of historical fiction. This enthralling novel is seen through the eyes of Lieutenant Dane Merrick McKennson, and lady Caroline. {India}
 .
Lady Caroline has only just recently learned that she was a product of a torrid and infamous affair. She is betrothed to a lord in New York, sent away aboard a ship bond for the Colonies. When the unthinkable happens and the ship she is on is taken.
The French speaking devils kill all but her and two other ladies and a small boy. Tortured and barely surviving, she is rescued when the ship is captured by a Union Jack, Man of War, under the guidance of red headed captain. Casting aside her old life of a prestigious Lady, she takes on the name India.
 .
Lieutenant Merrick was impressed into English Royal Navy, rising above the ranks to that of an officer. His family has lost their home and their name, cast out by his eldest brother. He has made his own way in the world on hard work and loyalty.
Merrick, and India life becomes intertwined as they are caught up in an extraordinary adventurous tale. India makes a deal with Merrick one that he can’t refuse.
Man of War is a historical masterpiece from the revolutionary historic author, TJ London. Perfectly executed with smooth, and flawless narration making this everything I hoped it would be. Intelligently written with just enough passionate scenes to keep your heart racing.
 .
London latest novel is meticulously research and her knowledge is astounding. Richly descriptive scenes, catapults the reader to 1775 aboard the Boudica War Ship, and to early Manhattan New York, right before the revolutionary war.
The authors ability to create vivid imagery, immersing the reader within the clear atmospheric details. Immensely talented, TJ. London sets the bar on historical fiction. The realistic life portrayed aboard capitan Merrick McKennson ship is vibrant and one you won’t forget. The storyline is multi layered, and the intrigue and plot twist is superbly executed. This fast paced prequel, gives the reader an in-depth engaging backstory to the author’s Revolutionary war series.
.
The characters are engaging, and three dimensional and fully developed as jump of the pages. Even the Villianous ones will capture your attention and are well portrayed.
TJ. London’s, Man Of War, is an addictive thrilling adventurous historical fiction.

★彡 This Historical Fiction Series Is One I highly Recommend ★彡

I enjoy historical fiction and it is nice to learn about various times besides WW2, which is the subject of many of the books I read. The Rebels and Redcoats Saga is centered around The American Revolution, and Man of War is the prequel, where we meat several of the characters and get background on them. The story begins after the Battle of Culloden in 1755. King George has taken away titles and belongings from the traitors and their families. A was is looming between the French and the English and being on a ship is a dangerous time with piracy and hostilities. In this story we meet two wonderful characters, Lieutenant Merrick and Caroline, aka, India. Merrick is on a ship that gets attacked by pirates when his captain is killed and he becomes the new captain. On a captured enemy vessel he discovers a treasure, meant as a dowry, and a woman chained in the hold from a passenger ship that mysteriously disappeared at sea. She has been brutalized and her face maimed, but Merrick sees her beauty. There is immediate chemistry between these two and it develops as the story goes on.

Another reviewer uses the word "Passion" to describe this story and it is very fitting. There is a lot of passion between India and Merrick, India is passionate to get revenge and the crew of the Boudica is passionate about catching the pirates. There are a lot of characters in this story, so it is fitting there is a full cast narrating this story. The treatment of women is very true to the period. They are either marriageable or they are used as whores. There are some scenes that might make some people uncomfortable, but they are not long. I really liked the character of Caroline/India. She is young but learns from what she has gone through. She is brave, sometimes foolish rushing in, smart, a quick learner and wants to be able to take care of herself. She doesn't want to depend on a man and feels dirty and tainted, not good enough for anyone anymore. Merrick is also headstrong, protective, emotional, persistent and brave. He is trying to clear his family name, and finds out that the plot against the king is being backed by his oldest brother, who he does not speak to. Can he foil the plot of the Jacobites, help India get revenge, clear his family name and Captain his own ship, something he really wants to do. Secondary characters are many that we met in The Tory and The Traitor, so it was interesting to see where and how they started on the paths they take in the future.

This is a long audiobook at almost 23 hours, but it went by quickly as there was so much action and adventure. The ensemble cast of narrators were excellent giving voice to the individual characters. With accents, gender, and age, each character was easily identified. I definitely recommend this audiobook to those who enjoy history, especially American History, and enjoy audiobooks as well.

TJ London takes us on a wild and emotional ride in this prequel of the Rebels and Redcoats Saga. In this book, we learn the backstory of the McKesson Brothers. Mostly surrounding Dane aka Merrick and his lady love, Miss India aka Caroline. He saves her and they end up having a bit of a partnership through the beginning of the book, which then evolves into more. India then forms a strong friendship with Stephen McKesson, who is Dane's brother as well as the doctor on the ship. I really enjoyed Stephen and Dane's relationship, but sad that things went so horribly with their brother James. I loved seeing characters from the other books and their lives in this prequel, like Celeste and Roger DeLancie.
I was completely swept away into the story by TJs fantastic storytelling, which combined with every voice actor in this book made this even more epic. I felt every bit of terror, fear, love, sweetness, humor and betrayal from the way Nicholas Boulton, Kathryn Vinclaire, Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller, John Hartley, Jason Clarke, James Cheatham and Dryw McArthur performed each role and they conveyed every feeling TJ wrote about.
The only thing in this entire book I didn't like was the sound effects. I'm not a fan of sound effects in audiobooks unless they are meant to be an audio play. This is not that. They also weren't very consistent throughout. But from listening to the whole book, the voice actors get every point and feeling across without needing sound effects, but don't let that keep you from listening to this audiobook because it truly is worth every minute.

Wow - what a roller coaster ride!

I've been a fan of the audiobooks of TJ London's Rebels and Redcoats saga since I first heard The Tory. The narrative and the world that TJ has built, with respect to the history and the era, is amazing. Each of her books is intricately crafted, following multiple dynamic and engaging characters, and this prequel gives so much of the backstory that now I want to go back and experience The Tory and The Traitor again so I can truly appreciate the character development of characters like Celeste and Roger Delancie.

In Man of War, we get the story of Merrick (aka Dane McKesson), and his love, India. They meet when Merrick saves India, and their relationship blooms from there. India also has a deep friendship with Merrick's brother, Stephen. The contrast between Merrick and Stephen and their other brother, James, is so sharp it's jarring, as it should be.

As with the prior books, the voice acting really sets this work of historical fiction apart. It's true voice acting, not simply narrating, and the casting is simply superb. Nicholas Boulton, Kathryn Vinclaire, Tara Langella, Patrick Zeller, John Hartley, Jason Clarke, James Cheatham and Dryw McArthur gave knockout performances. Patrick Zeller and Tara Langella have been amazing this whole series.

I was so looking forward to reading this book but man, was it long and so slooooow!!

I loved the descriptions of the sea and the time spent on the ship. I felt for Merrick and his mal de mere and became involved with all his men at sea. I liked Merrick but I did get sick of how hard done by his was. Be a man my son!

I didn't like Caroline, although felt sorry for all that had  befallen her.  I just didn't believe that she could suddenly become this pigheaded woman and there is no way that a Captain of a warship would have put up with her antics, even if she was in love with him! This was just too far fetched!  All the nonsense of her dressing up as a man. Sorry. I don't buy it!   To cap it all we had to have a mention of the slave trade and how guilty they felt. Give me a break!

Then the ending was far too neat and actually unfinished. What happened to Carlisle shipping? Stephen? James? How would he have become a duke with Stephen alive?

Finally, so far as narration was concerned, Nicholas Boulton was as excellent as ever but I didn't like Caroline's voice and some of the male characters' voices were just bizarre.

So in summary,  I definitely won't be continuing with the series.

JENNY & ED'S AUDIO REVIEW:

OVERALL: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
PERFORMANCE: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
STORY: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

GOD SAVE THE KING.

The characters were amazing!! We loved getting to know Merrick and India!! Merrick was a strong and mighty character, while India was a head-strong character who fought for everything she'd been through and more!!

The story-line was phenomenal!! There were so many plot twists that happened, we were just flabbergasted at how they turned out. There many emotional feelers within the story as well. We just couldn't stop listening to the story because we just had to know what would happen next!! This author has a royal knack at drawing in her audience and keeping us on high alert and suspense with a touch of humor from beginning to end!! And that ending...pulled at my heartstrings!!!

The narrators were...I don't have the right words to express how awesome the narrators were!! We could easily picture the character with the narrator's voices!! And the sound affects within the story made it that much more addicting to listen too as well!! We just loved all the narrator's within this story!! It made it feel so real, like we were actually a part of the story!!

This was a magnificent story all around and we highly recommend it!!!

I absolutely loved this prequel story to the Rebels and Redcoats saga, as the story and its beginnings comes to life in TJ London's outstandingly gripping tale of betrayal, violence, emotion and passion.
Merrick (Dane) McKesson is the perfect hero, handsome with his red flaming hair, sense of humour, honour, and twinkle in his eye, who although is seen as a traitor by the king, is everything the admiralty would need in a leader, except that he is not truly accepted by them either, as the ghosts of the past haunt him, his family and his career.
After a chance deadly encounter, he saves the life of the beautiful but betrayed Lady Caroline (India), who barely escaping from deviant and cruel French captives, has secrets of her own.
From the very first page, to the last, there is adventure, betrayal, passion, emotion, sadness, violence, cruelty, and love, as twists and turns abound in every chapter.
Great characters that you will fall in love with and recognise as the three previous books fall into place.
This adventure is outstanding! But then I wouldn't expect anything less from TJ London and her writing.

This is the prequel to the amazing series The Rebels and Redcoats Saga. The story is full of adventures, action, mystery, twists and turns, and romance. The writing is breathtakingly enthralling. The characters are well developed, and very interesting. Lieutenant Merrick and India are fantastic characters. The supporting characters are great! The storyline is grippingly captivating, complex, and unique. The cast of narrators is impressive: Nicholas Boulton, Kathryn Vinclaire, Patrick Zeller, John Hartley, Tara Langella, Jason Clarke, Dryw McArthur, Marnye Young, and James Cheatham. They did an outstanding job with the narration. The audio effects are well done, and they add more entertainment while listening to this audiobook. This is an excellent audio production, and a fantastic team of author/narrators. Impossible to put it down. The series is a masterpiece! T.J. London's writing is brilliant and magnificent. I love everything she writes. She never disappoints! No other words, just applause!

4.5/5 stars, rounded up. This book is historical romance, FYI, so keep that in mind if you want to read it, you have to enjoy romance. While I typically don't read romance, (though I love historical fiction) I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The characters are overall believable, engaging, and you want them to succeed, which is really important for any story. I liked that the book was never preachy, the story was not lost in the message which I find common in a lot of traditionally published books in the US these days.

The romance definitely gets hot and heavy at parts and there is quite a bit of sex between many different folks. So if that's not your thing I wouldn't recommend reading it. Towards the later parts of the books there was a bit of contrived drama, which always loses me a little, but overall I really enjoyed this author's work and am thinking about picking up the rest of her stuff at some point here.

Well written and the action keeps moving.Lady Caroline/India is betrothed and sent to married a Lord In NY. On the way to the Colonies, her ship is taken over by pirates. Everyone else on board were killed but two other ladies and a child. Why was Lady Caroline singled out? What were all those riches doing in the hold of ship that was abandoned by pirates? Why?
Merrick/Dane had been impressed into the Navy when he was but 15. The son of a Duke, the brother of a Duke, how could this happen? Merrick becomes the Captain of the Boudica and uncovers secrets that may take down the throne of England.
Can Merrick and India stop this plot? Will they survive? Odds don't look good but this saga will keep you guessing and on your toes. A can't put it down read.

MOW brings more of what London began in the initial Rebels and Redcoats Trilogy: epic storytelling, action, romance, violence, and tragedy. What's better? The work is cleaned up. There is less repetition and writing for writing's sake, and we are left with a sharper, more developed final product. Plus, some of the characters are more fleshed out, less black & white caricatures (especially the villains... although some are pretty much just bad bad bad.). These stories aren't always pretty, but I can't help but think they would be great serial TV. My only struggle is after a year away, I couldn't always remember the details of these secondary characters from the earlier works. Certainly that is a "me problem," but it is what it is. This one can stand alone, or be read prior to the following books; however, I do believe the would be more enjoyable read by publication date. 4 stars - maybe more - I definitely look forward to more in this series! It could go on and on.

Really stunning. Tons of very visual action, strong characters. So much deception and intrigue. So much love and acceptance. Lots of family rivalry and deep family secrets. Really amazing good guys and very clever bad guys. Lots of heart with a good amount of humor and a dash of sizzle.

This is the first book I've read by this author (picked it up after meeting her in person at a book event and fell in LOVE with how alive she was while describing the books...and admit to loving her covers!) and I so enjoyed her writing style so, it definitely will not be my last!

This is a prequel (over 600 pages!!!) to the rest of the series so, I can't wait to read the others.

This story kept me engaged with its complex characters, intriguing plot, and fantastic narration. Merrick and India, the main characters, won my heart with their resilience, determination, and chemistry. The non-stop excitement, suspense, and historical detail made the story feel authentic and kept me guessing. The narration was top-notch, with an entire cast of narrators and immersive sound effects. This book is a thrilling adventure filled with action, intrigue, revenge, and romance. I highly recommend it to historical fiction fans for its captivating storytelling and well-developed characters.
