Men of Monroe #2

My Only Reason

Rate this book
Fall in love with my teenage crush - tick
Propose to him on a leap year - tick
Receive a sad look and a whispered 'we can't' - tick, tick, tick.
Austin Hart was my first everything–crush, love, and heartbreak.

Seven years ago, he broke me to pieces and when my world imploded two years later, I stupidly fell back into his bed, seeking comfort only he could give. Accepting that we would never be together, I left Monroe and let him become a distant memory.

Five years later an opportunity I can’t refuse forces me to make the long trip back to Monroe.

And Monroe means seeing Austin again.

I’d be lying if I said the years haven’t been good to him. He’s undeniably sexy, smoldering, and he still makes my heart flutter regardless of how much I want to dislike him. My body may still react, but my mind will never forget.

Though I promised myself I’d never fall under his spell again, he has other plans— and the universe has even bigger ones.

What the hell was happening? It had been five fucking years since I’d been anywhere near him, and I’d just spent a good chunk of the past two hours ignoring him and pretending he wasn’t sitting across from me. But look at me now. Under the low lights of the Esplanade, every door I’d closed when it came to him burst wide open.

I really enjoyed this and can't say enough about Rachel Brooks ability to write a stellar story (first time reader here!).

I was expecting a ton of the some old cliched stuff that's been turning me away from contemporary romance as of late, but instead the author managed to make me believe in the love between a "for your own good" heartbreaker and a woman not willing to dole out a second chance.

Not an easy feet, people.

⭐️ 5 "Flowers & Whiskey" Stars ⭐️
My Only Reason was everything I wanted and more. I had eagerly been waiting for this book and was so happy to get back to Monroe. Rachel Brookes shaped a fantastic swoon-worthy second chance romance between Marnie and Austin. This story is brimming with hilarious dialogues, intense chemistry, adorable moments and emotional components.

"She tasted like whiskey and second chances. She felt like new beginnings and chasing dreams."

Marnie is back in Monroe where she finally has the chance to live her dream and open her florist shop. Being back means facing her ex. She tries to stay strong and not succumb to Austin’s charm, but the man is just so resolute to get her back. She’s conflicted with her old feelings for him slowly resurfacing, but she first needs to learn to trust him again. It’s truly a beautiful process to see them open up to each other again. Marnie has fire in her and certainly doesn’t make it easy for Austin. The old wounds of their break up are still present and hard to let go.

Austin Hart is the perfect balance between alpha and gentle. It’s clear from their reunion he still has strong feelings for the young woman. I enjoyed immensely how he is clear in his intentions to get her back right from the start. He gets all possessive and determined; this side of his personality being so seductive. As much as it’s a turn on, he can also be so caring and dreamy.

This novel put a wide grin on my face, but also had the ability to make me cry. My heart was bursting with blissful feelings over the lovely slow burn romance between this wonderful couple. The slow build of their healing relationship is flawlessly executed. It’s at the right pace for them to completely give in to each other. Their powerful connection is sexy and mesmerizing.

One aspect I loved more than anything about this novel is the fantastic dynamic between the whole group of friends. The amusing instants and the support shared between friends and family just gives another dimension to this story.

"If I'm the sun that brightened your dark days, then you're the earth that allowed my flowers to bloom."

My Only Reason is an exquisite love story. There is a little bit of everything in this book making it utterly riveting! This trip to Monroe was charming and I’m more than excited for the next installment in the Men of Monroe Series.

Not my thing. Others will probably like this one, but I prefer to read about men who know what they want and go after it, not hang back and do their own thing until the woman they supposedly want comes back on her own. She's the one that reaches out to him to talk about what happened, not the other way around. And his reasoning behind everything that went down between them in the past made me roll my eyes, so I ended up skimming to the end.

"Marnie was my one and only. My only reason. The only girl to get close enough to peel back my layers and find the real me. She knew all my secrets, fears and insecurities, and she accepted the best and worst of me while still offering every part of herself. And I'd fucked it up."

"From the moment I met him, his eyes always told me the deepest parts of his soul. When he hurt or felt pain, happiness, and love, I knew. If he couldn't express what he needed to say with words, I'd look into his eyes and see it all. I always loved it and craved the connection and pull, but tonight I was petrified of what his eyes would tell me."

"She tasted like whiskey and second chances. She felt like new beginnings and chasing dreams."

Man, oh man. Words can not even express how excited I was to see that My Only Reason was coming out. I have been waiting and waiting for a new book from author Rachel Brookes and I've got to tell you, Marnie and Austin's story was sooooo worth the wait!

From the moment I picked up My Only Reason, I was totally sucked in. The prologue broke my heart and shattered it into a million pieces. I knew that Marnie and Austin's story was going to put my emotions through the paces and I could not wait to see how everything would play out.

My Only Reason captured my heart instantly and had me begging for more. Marnie and Austin's story was an epic one. Their love was intense and unforgettable. It's the kind of love that no matter how much time passes, it's just as strong as ever. But, things were not all sunshine and flowers for these two. Austin messed up and when I say messed up, I mean on an epic level. It will be five years before Austin is reunited with Marnie. And once he lays his eyes on her, all bets are off. He finally can make amends and fight for the love of his life.

The road to happily ever after is quite a bumpy ride for Marnie and Austin. Their love was intense, but the pain of the past was still very real. Marnie was afraid of letting Austin get close and didn't know if she could trust him again. I really loved that she made Austin work for it. She made him prove himself over and over again. He had to give her a reason to put her faith in him again, show her that he was in it for the long haul, that he was sorry for the past and she still owned every single piece of his heart. Like I said, their journey wasn't an easy one. So many moments tugged at my heart and left me begging for more. The tension and will they/won't they moments just oozed off the pages. I loved watching these two go through the paces and try to figure out if their future was worth fighting for.

My Only Reason was exactly the second chance romance I was looking for. It was well written and entertaining. The characters were so much fun and easy to connect with. I loved all the cameos and friendship between all the characters. I loved the angst and drama. I loved the tension and swoon worthy moments. I loved the moments that made my heart sigh and root for Marnie & Austin's happily ever after. This book hit all my marks and left me with a huge smile on my face.

My Only Reason is the second book in the Men of Monroe series by Rachel Brookes. It's a second chance romance which features Austin Hart, a sexy police officer and Ben Hunt's colleague and best friend, and Marnie Lavender, a quirky flower shop owner who is the only woman he ever loved and whose heart he broke into million tiny pieces 7 years ago. I'm a huge sucker for this genre and stories where two people have history together and share an epic and once in a lifetime kind of love. I always root for them to find their way back to each other again and to overcome all the trials and tribulations that fate throws their way. My Only Reason was a very touching and inspiring story about second chances and forgiveness, about making mistakes and learning from them. Rachel did a fantastic job with this story - from the well paced, engaging storyline to the well developed, intriguing characters. I've devoured and thoroughly enjoyed every single page of it.

Marnie had all her firsts with her teenage crush Austin - kiss, sex, relationship, love but sadly also heartbreak. Seven years ago she gathered all her courage and proposed to him but he said "no, we can't" - which was the reason why they broke up and Marnie left Monroe. Now she is back in her hometown in order to pursue one of her biggest dreams - opening her very own flower shop called Lucious Lavender. Marnie is happy to be back and to spend more time with her mom and sister and to reunite with her former best friend and neighbour Ben Hunt. If there was only a way to ignore her uber gorgeous ex-boyfriend whose mere presence still makes her heart flutter like the wings of a butterfly. But staying away from Austin won't be an easy task because he is hell bent on making things right between them and showing Marnie that she was and always will be his only reason for existing...

I loved the flirty banter and sizzling chemistry between the hero and heroine. There was so much pent up sexual tension between them. I thought that my poor Kindle will go up in flames. It was very important to me that the characters first solved their issues before they got physical. I could understand Austin's reasoning and truly felt his remorse. He is such a swoon-worthy and picture perfect Alpha man - the ultimate book boyfriend material. Marnie was a kind-hearted, caring and loveable heroine who makes you want to befriend her and have Wine Wednesdays with.

It was great to come back to Monroe and to revisit some of my beloved characters and even ones from Rachel Brookes' previous books like Josh and Ashlyn (Austin's sister) from Be My Temptation. Now I'm looking forward to Missy's book and can't wait to see what Rachel has in tow for her. I loved the hint she left about her love interest in the epilogue of My Only Reason. This book was a true delight and goes straight to my favorites of 2019 shelf. I'm therefore strongly encouraging you to give it a try. I promise you won't regret it.

I've missed Rachel Brookes words so bad and couldn't wait for My Only Reason to be published. As soon as it was live I one-clicked it and started reading. And let me tell you that it was worth the wait. This heartwarming, unputdownable and sweet story exceeded all of my expectations! I will even go that far and say that it's my most favorite book from Rachel Brookes alongside with Be My Temptation. And I don't say this lightly! Who ever had the pleasure to read her work knows that Rachel is a very gifted writer and has the ability to make you fall in love with her characters so hard, that letting them go after you reached the end seems impossible.

Austin Hart was Marnie Lavender's first everything. All she ever wanted was a future with the boy she loved. But sadly things didn't go as planned seven years ago when she proposed to him and received a "we can't" that broke her heart into million pieces.

When Marnie's father gets shot and killed at work two years later, she willingly falls back into Austin's bed, seeking the kind of comfort only he could give her. But deep down she knows that they would never be back together again, so she leaves Monroe for good.

Five years later she gets an offer to open her own flower shop in Monroe, something she's always dreamed about. Unable to turn this incredible opportunity down, Marnie decides to return back home. But being back in Monroe also means facing Austin again who's still as undeniably sexy and all alpha. Marnie still feels attracted to him but her body and mind are at constant war. While her body craves him, her heart warns her to stay away!

What Marnie Lavender never took into consideration was that once she was back, Austin Hart would do everything within his power to win back the heart of the only woman he has ever loved.

There are not enough words to describe how much I loved Austin and Marnie. They were made for each other. He was the hot, protective and possesive alpha cop with a heart of gold. The way he took care of Marnie's family without her knowing about it made my heart melt. He had his reasons for saying no to her all these years ago which will be explained during the book. But what was most important for me was that he never stopped loving her!

Marnie was such a sweet and compassionate person. She always saw the good in people and protected the ones she loved fiercely! I loved that she fought for what she wanted and didn't let people walk all over her. There was truly no better match for Austin than her.

I encourage everyone to buy and read this amazing book. I promise you a lot of laughter, great side characters and several swoon-worthy moments. Let Austin and Marnie take you on a ride through Monroe. Once you meet the whole crew, all you will wish for will be to be a part of them. Well done Rachel Brookes! I can't wait for more books in this highly addictive series. I'm giving this beauty 5 well deserved stars and putting it straight on my top favorites shelf!

5 “Freckles” Stars!!!

My Only Reason was everything I didn’t know I needed. This is the second book in the Men of Monroe series. This also so happens to be my first book by Rachel Brookes. And yes, I know I’m doing it wrong in not reading the first book first, but in my defense it can be read as a standalone. I will say though, I am kicking myself for not starting with the first book first and for not reading this author before.

My Only Reason gave me so many feels. A story of true love, friendship, heartbreak and second chances.

“She tasted like whiskey and second chances. She felt like new beginnings and chasing dreams.”

Marnie is back in Monroe after years of being away. She’s finally going to make her dream a reality and open her own florist shop. But being back in Monroe also means there’s a guarantee that she’ll run into her ex. An ex that broke her heart in the most devastating way and had her questioning if their love was even real. Marnie tries to stay strong and not give into Austin. And try as she might she’s not strong enough when it comes to Austin’s charming ways. But even though old feelings are resurfacing and she’s conflicted with how she feels, Marnie first needs to learn how to trust Austin again.

Austin Hart, be still my freaking heart! I was swooning so freaking hard for him. My gosh, he was everything charming and had me smitten left and right. Though he did have a lot of groveling to do. He knows what he did was wrong, but in his eyes it was the only way for Marnie to fulfill her dream. Not once has he stopped loving Marnie, if anything his love for her grew. And now that Marnie is back, he will go to any lengths possible to win back her love, the only woman who’s ever claimed and continues claiming his heart.

One thing that’s certain is that Marnie and Austin were always meant to be. Even after years of being apart, their hearts never stopped loving each other. It was only a matter of time before they came together and beat as one.

My Only Reason is a beautiful love story. A well written second chance and slow burn romance with an abundance of emotions. With characters that are likable and relatable. With a group of friends that are had me laughing nonstop, but also left me engaged. I loved this book. I can’t wait for the next book in this series and I can’t wait to go back to Monroe.

My Only Reason was an amazing second chance romance and I loved every minute of it.
Austin was on my sh!t list when I started reading but he swiftly moved himself over to my swoon-ovaries-explode list.
I loved Marnie from the first sentence. Her strength, her passion, her sass, I loved everything about her...I totally want to be friends with her AND I'm totally introducing Wine Time Wednesday into my life.
Their journey was an emotional one and Rachel made you feel each one of those emotions...I cannot wait for the next book in this series

Dnf @ 31%.

Too syrupy and cheesy for this girl. Too many characters as well, and omg, all of them so...annoying. So annoying. Apparently in Monroe, nobody has any boundaries and feel it is their right to meddle in their friends lives and decide what is best for them, and nobody ever has the guts to say, back the hell off and mind your own business. People broadcast their emo baggage and make scenes in high visibility areas like restaurants and bars while the whole town gawps at them and really, who does that, ffs?

And what kind of 'man' lets his best friend's girl get all up in his grille and 'force' him into dating because she's decided he needs a girlfriend? Just, no. Someone needs to slap these busy bodies down like flies. I don't know what kind of place the writer lives in or people she hangs with that she thinks this is charming or normal, but I hate to break it to her. It's neither.

So, this story is the kind of second - chancer my friends hate and I understand why most of them aren't fans of this trope. The H/h break up over lack of communication but a third of the way in I'm still no closer to knowing why the H pulled such an arsey move. The couple is separated for 7 years and not faithful to one another, so how am I supposed to take it seriously when they claim the other one is the love of their life?

'I'm going to get my girl back...'

Puh-leeze. Your girl? Why are you shoving your junk in some random if she's 'your girl?'

The H's voice is too feminine, descriptions from his POV are too detailed and guys don't think that way. Plus he was weak and a pushover and his friend Ben was, too. He was afraid to call out his GF for being all kinds of pushy and tell her to back off because she threatened to refuse sex.
What??
So lame.
The book is overloaded with sappiness and men who walk around with 'soft eyes' and there's a lot of silly flashbacks, too. It's all so barf-inducing I can't stick it out to the end.

I need to stay away from books and writers like this.

While I enjoyed this second chance story, there was something missing for me. I guess I just couldn’t connect fully to the story or maybe it was the characters. It might just be a case of the mood I was in when I read it.

4* Whiskey Stars

This second chance at love for Austin and Marnie was sincere and heartfelt. After a bad breakup both went their own way in life and the world only to meet up again years later when Marnie returns to her hometown. What had not changed in all the years apart was the chemistry and feeling they both still had towards each other. This slow burn romance will have you routing for them to be together once again where they belong.

I enjoyed getting to know all the wonderful fun loving friends of Austin and Marnie’s that live in the quaint town of Monroe.

This is my first book I have read by Rachel Brookes and I enjoy every page read.

Many thanks to Rachel for my copy to read and review.

This was a fantastic second chance romance. I really loved how Marnie and Austin slowly reconnected. I’m glad it wasn’t rushed. Marnie was extremely hurt over how things ended between them and she needed time to understand why Austin did what he did and to forgive him and be able to move on.

Austin was just the perfect guy. Even though he broke his own heart when he pushed Marnie away, he did everything for her to be able to flourish in her life. But once she was home, he was determined to win her back.

I really enjoyed all the secondary characters as well. I’ll have to check out book one of this series and I’m totally excited to see how the next book goes.

This was my first book by Rachel Brookes. It I’m definitely going to check out her other stories.

Sometimes the second chance stories bug me because there's that history, unspoken secrets why they broke up that drags on for 75% of the story. If you're so consumed with each other WTH can't you talk about what happened? That was this story to a T. And once the secret was told they miraculously were perfect together. C'mon - we all know that mistakes, miscommunication lead to hard feelings, and even with apologies there is going to be that little awkwardness for a day or two.

ARC received from author for an honest review

It was great to get back to Monroe, and OMG - Austin's story!

I adored what I knew of Austin in All That I Am, but oh my swoon! I fell hook, line and sinker for him in My Only Reason.

Marnie and Austin's story is a beautiful, frustrating and at times heartbreaking second chance at love. What I really liked about this story is that our lovelies didn't just fall back into bed together, it was more of a slow motion montage!

I was completely drawn into this book from the minute I opened my Kindle. I love love love the friendships in this series - both old and new - and I have to admit that it did make me miss my besty since we are hours away from each other. I want in on Wine Time Wednesdays I tell you!

Also, I need to know Ms Brookes - how can I get in on Gigi's cake rotation.

I laughed, I got sad, I got frustrated, but most of all I loved My Only Reason.

Now I can't wait for the next in the series

I accepted to read to My Only Reason in exchange for an honest review from the author. It does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

**4.5 stars**

I have been literally DYING to get this book in my possession since All That I Am released in 2017. I adored Sasha and Ben and was so ready for Austin and Marnie! But I swear, sometimes second chance romances drive me bonkers. All I want to do is just shove them together and tell them to just continue their relationship. I am so impatient especially when they already know each other very well.

“Austin Hart had been my first everything; my first love, heartbreak, I-love-you, I-hate-you, I-need-you, I-never-want-to-see-you-again.
Monroe was Austin.
Austin was Monroe.”

Austin just made me swoon y'all. I can't with southern men! I become putty for them. All that sweet, gentleman gets to me...

Marnie is ready to come back to Monroe and start her own flower shop. But she's not ready to be back in the town of someone she was ready to give her whole life to. It has been 5 years since they last saw each other.

As much as I wanted Marnie and Austin to be a couple already, I love that Rachel really took the time to really break down everything that has happened and how they can build a lasting relationship. That's one of the reasons why I love Rachel's books. It's not just about finding someone and marrying them down the road... She really develops the characters and you really feel like you are in their shoes.

“So now I had to decide, was it too late for us, or was this our chance of starting our new version of forever?”

{I received this in exchange for an Honest Review}

Austin and Marnie’s story was so wonderful. This was such a good second chance romance. I had so much fun reading this story. It never ceased to make me swoon. All Austin wants is to win his girl back finally. He broke both of their heart’s for a reason and now that Marnie has returned to Monroe nothing will stop him from winning her heart once again. Marnie is guarded, Austin Hart broke her heart and she doesn’t know if she can trust him again. She is finally back home for good and she knows that means that Austin will be in her life in some ways. They share a bestfriend and a deep history. I loved seeing Austin fight for his girl and I Loved seeing Marnie taking the time to really see if being with Austin again is what she really wants. They are angsty as hell. I love the back and forth and the fight between them. This is definitely a slow burn and it is worth every second. Austin and Marnie are Fire!!! Their connection is so amazing!! This book is incredible!! I loved every second of it! I can’t help but to smile whenever I think about these two!!! If you are looking for a sexy, slow burning ,second chance romance with lots of heart and family then read this book!! I am in love with this whole series and I can’t wait for more to come!

Second chance/small town/Dual PoV

SYNOPSIS: The FC, Marnie, returns to Monroe where she grew up 10 years after she left having proposed to her boyfriend, the MC (Austin), and had him turn her down. The story covers how the FC and MC find their way back to each other. There’s a little bit of drama brought on by the MC’s family but limited angst.

Heat Level: 🌶️🌶️/🍆🍆 This is a slow burn so not too many sex scenes but when the FC/MC get together the scenes are well written with heat but feeling and love but do not take over the story.

The book needs a good edit as there are a lot of typos and editing issues. That aside this is an enjoyable and engaging read although the focus is on the FC/MC getting back together. That means that there isn’t really any underlying bigger story or drama although the author tries to create some through the MC’s family and the aftermath of the FC’s father being shot 5 years prior. The drama with the family doesn’t really work IMO and I was left confused as to what the mother’s issues were and what the point was.

I have enjoyed this author’s other works more but if you are in the mood for a “comfort” read and one that just makes you feel good with no real angst then this is the book for you. Maybe not a keeper but good enough to while away a few hours.

Austin sure can make a girl swoon 😍😍😍 after reading All that I am and falling for Ben i couldn't wait to go back to Monroe. Loved this slow burn second chance love story between Marnie and Austin. It had just the right amount of flashbacks as to not over power the re-kindling of this potent sexually charged couple. Austin had the perfect mix of alpha tendencies and swoon-worthy moments, but only with Marnie. She was the one that got away. I love how there is no unnecessary drama for dramas sake and it's outside issues rather than issues within the relationship that cause some minor problems. I also didn't think I could fall more in love with Ben after his and Sasha's book, boy was I wrong 😍😘. Gigi and Missy were hilarious and were a great balance between serious moments providing some great funny moments. Looking forward to Missy finding her man, who will have a real struggle to catch her in sure. Also Drew, I feel he is gonna give both Ben and Austin a run for their money when he finally opens up 😘
Ms Brookes you write some of the most amazing heros.

Can we please address the amount of swooning that is going on in this book?!?! I think I’m dizzy from all the swirling LOL Austin freaking Hart is one of the dreamiest men I’ve ever read! Let’s not forget about the SLOW delicious burn between Austin and Marnie that we’ve got going on as well. Sexual tension level is at 100 and it’s smokin’

This book was hot and sexy, sweet and swoony, sad and sour all in one! The shenanigans that occur once Marnie gets back to town are hilarious! I seriously want to be a part of this clique and this town! They are the perfect friend/family dynamic. The way they take care of each other is so endearing. I wouldn’t expect anything less from the friends of the man who takes care of everyone! I can not wait for February 29th ;)

Loved the many emotions this book has and the story that developed. I didn’t want any of it to end.

This book was great, i had been waiting for Austin's book patiently for a while - who am i kidding i was not that patient!! But the wait was worth it, this book has heartbreak, second chances, giggles and swooning romance. I love second chance romance stories and this one is filled with that because the heartbreak was so hard to get over the chance of a second chance gets you right on the edge. I will say this book is one of the best of Rachel's i have read, and though i am a huge fan this book hits it out of the park and it is great to read some new work from her. Not going to tell you too much more and ruin the story for you :) The world of Monroe men is one you will dive into and not want to leave - but Austin is mine peeps x

Marnie and Austin were happy and in love before he shattered her heart sending her running from her home town. When she comes home he makes his play and when these Monroe men go in they go ALL in. Marnie is very hesitant to let him back into her life, she makes him work hard to prove he's committed. Loved his single minded tenacity. So happy to catch up with all the guys and looking forward to the next book.

A second chance romance that pulled at every heartstring, then kept me wondering what happened seven years ago that ended things.

Marnie and Austin had an undying love that was meant to last a lifetime, but hearts were broken and life moved on. When you can’t go back, is it possible to move past the heartache and start a new version of the happily ever after you were supposed to have? Well, Austin is determined to heal Marnie’s heart, he just needs to convince her to trust him again. Wow, when Austin said “game on”, he wasn’t messing around...be prepared to do some major swooning!

Rachel Brookes IS BACK! My Only Reason, Austin and Marnie’s story, was full of laughs and tears, sexy and swoon-worthy moments. This second chance romance had everything I ever wanted out of a couple. Austin and Marnie’s story, along with the rest of the gang in Monroe, consumed me and I could NOT put it down! I’m so very happy to be back in Monroe and to have Ms. Brookes back in the writing game!

Just when I thought that Ben Hunt was top of the Rachel Brooke's book boyfriend list, BAM here she comes with Austin Hart. My main man. The one that made me swoon throughout the while book. Marnie is a lucky lady ;)

I'll admit, I totally cried at certain parts of this book. The words totally gripped my heart. But they made the book even better.

Rachel Brooke's remains one of my favourite authors of all time. She will never write a book I wont read.

5 amazingly swoony stars!

This book was all that I expected and then some. I loved this book even more than the first one in this series, and I can't wait for the author to continue, I hope she gives us the next book in the series soon. I was very emotional reading Austin and Marnie's story. Again the author made me smile, laugh and cry all through out the book. Looking forward to more.

Fabulous Book!!

I have only read the first 2 books in The Men Of Monroe series. They are the first books I have read from this author. I will tell you that I will be reading all of her books. I absolutely loved the storyline and all the characters. The secondary characters will keep you laughing. I highly recommend these books.

Give me a good second chance Romance and I'm good. The love that Marnie and Austin have for one another is just as strong if not stronger now after 7 years. These two have alot to work out so they can find a happy ever after, but it's so worth the wait.
