And the Killer Is...

Rate this book
PI Savannah Reid has delved into the ugly side of SoCal’s celebrity culture more than once. But the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency may have bitten off more than they can chew when a Hollywood legend makes a deadly comeback . . .

It will be a cold day in San Carmelita before Savannah skips over a high-profile homicide case, especially one attached to a tasty reward. But when 90-year-old former silver screen siren Lucinda Faraday is murdered inside her derelict mansion, serving justice comes with unsavory risks. The fallen star, considered one of the most beautiful women of her time, was found strangled by a pair of vintage stockings amid a hoard of garbage and priceless memorabilia. Now, Lucinda is making headlines again—and, like in the past, her name is connected with the worst kind of scandal . . .

As a quest for answers reveals sleazy secrets about the victim’s history, the Moonlight Magnolia Agency soon discover that corruption, addiction, and blackmail were as rampant in the good old days of Hollywood as in the present—maybe even more so. Balancing a suspect list longer than the Lucinda’s acting credits and evidence that could destroy the reputation of people still alive, can Savannah outsmart the culprit before she or someone else get reduced to tabloid fodder next?

The newest in the "A Savannah Reid Mystery" series comes And The Killer Is…, from Kensington Books. Savannah is at it again, another case, another murder only this time it's making Hollywood headlines.

Savannah Reid is one of my favorite characters, right after her granny. The characters in this series are welcome at my house anytime. I adore Granny, and all of the Reid kids, well… most of them. I was pleased to see that younger sister Alma makes an appearance in this latest in the long-running series. Even the victim in this book is likable, and the premise of an old Hollywood star is unique and highly enthralling. The setting is as always thought-provoking and described in enough detail that readers will be glad they aren't there.

Finding an old Hollywood actress dead in a hoarder's mansion is unique enough, but figuring out who killed her while sifting through all the trash is one of the hardest things Savannah has ever done. The fact that Savannah's husband is there from the start digging through the mountainous rubble helps. Suspects are varied, all with distinct personalities that are almost as difficult to figure out as the tonnage of garbage in the star's home. There are plenty of clues and red herrings to go through, and even though most readers will figure who the killer is before the unveiling, they will want to read to the very end to find out why.

This stunning addition is another wonderful book that puts old Hollywood front and center and keeps Savannah on her toes. And The Killer Is… will bring a tear to your eyes, which is not unusual in this series, mainly this is due to Granny. It is heartwarming, endearing, and ultimately a memorable who-dun-it that leaves readers wanting more. I am thrilled with this latest addition and looking forward to more editions.

When Savannah learns of the death of Lucinda Faraday, a 90 year old former silver screen siren, she jumps at the chance to investigate especially since there is a reward for finding her killer. Lucinda was killed in her mansion, that has seen better days, by a pair of vintage stockings. She was strangled to death and.left to be found in garbage and some of her own memorabilia. What kind of person would have an axe to grind with such an old woman? Savannah soon learns that Lucinda was no sweetheart, one sordid secret after another pops up as she investigates. The list of people who hated Lucinda astounds Savannah but she knows she must work through each and every name to figure out who the murderer is. Follow along as Savannah visits the past to find some answers, can she out-maneuver a killer or will she end up in the headlines? This is a wonderful series with strong female characters, and exciting plots!

This was a fantastic book! It’s #25 in the series and (by my opinion) the Best one so far!! And i’ve loved them All. The mystery part of it was great but the personal storyline of the characters has been set up for the addition of new characters and storylines. Plus it’s taken Dirk & Savannah in a whole different direction. I’m excited to read the next one.

This is the twenty-fifth book in the Savannah Reid series. Savannah is on a stakeout with Dirk when they come across a young boy and his mother who has a bag of drugs on her. Savannah and Dirk take the boy in temporarily after his mother is arrested. Shortly after, Savannah gets a call from an old friend asking for help. Her friend had found an elderly friend of his strangled. The woman was a hoarder so there was no shortage of possible evidence. Dirk and Savannah along with the whole Moonlight Magnolia team work on the case and sift through everything in her home trying to find clues as to who wanted the old woman dead. I always have loved the Savannah Reid books. It is always like reconnecting with old friends every time I sit down with the characters. I love Granny Reid. She is the grandmother I think everyone wants. The mystery was well done and I didn't suspect the killer until the end. I absolutely loved the young boy and Savannah's niece Vanna Rose. This is and always will be a series that brings me so much joy. I can't wait to read more.

I enjoyed this book. I really liked the boy Brody and how Savannah and Dirk worked the case around spending time with him. The boy and the dog really made the book. The story was interesting but I found that I didn't like Dirk that much. I was surprised by who the killer was. #AndtheKillerIs #NetGalley

A former cop turned PI with a soft heart for the less fortunate. I haven’t been able to read the series in order and a lot has happened since the last one I read but I was still able to catch up on the characters. The killer was not who I guessed. I enjoy the characters and hope to find the previous books.

As usual - G. A, McKevett knocks it out of the park with her Savannah Reid mystery. This is #24 in the series, I've read them all, and they just get better every time. It is such a wonderful mix of family, friends, and ugly murderers who are very difficult to figure out. This is about the 21st book in this series where I was totally unprepared for the identification of the murderer. Yep - I got it wrong again. Bravo G. A.!

This series is one I've enjoyed since the first book, and #25 delivers more than a terrific mystery. There's a new character in town, and I wish that character lived in my neighborhood! Another winner for McKevett!

And the Killer Is..... by G. A. McKevett is the 25th book in the Savannah Reid Mystery series, and another great addition. I love this series, and reading a new book is like visiting old friends. Savannah is a private investigator who owns the Midnight Magnolia Detective Agency and her husband Dirk, is a police detective. When Savannah is hired to solve the murder of a 90 year old silver screen legend, the detecting begins. There is also a new person in their lives, who I love. This book made me laugh out loud several times. There are twists and turns around every corner. I found this book to be a quick read, with a well developed plot and characters. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. If you love cozy mysteries, I strongly recommend this book.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

Savannah accompanies Dirk on a stake out, that goes well as far as the police are concerned, but Savannah and Dirk end up with a temporary houseguest because the System is overwhelmed. Meanwhile, Savannah's agency is hired to investigate the death of a former star of the silver screen. Who would want to murder a 90-year-old woman, and why?

This long-running series features one of my favorite book characters. Savannah may be the one I would most like to be – or at least be friends with :) The recurring characters are like old friends, and I like the introduction of new characters, usually members of Savannah's family relocating from Georgia to California. Each of the books seems to revolve around one or two particular social issues, but not in a heavy-handed way. There are two such issues in this book, one relating to the murder and one relating to Savannah and Dirk's personal lives. I knew what was coming with the personal issue almost from the moment it was introduced in the story, but wasn't really sure about the identity of the murderer until just before it was revealed in the book. I look forward to reading the next book in this series!

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.

Savannah and Dirk are spending another evening at a stakeout that is offering little in the way of evidence for Dirk’s case. When a woman pulls up to the suspected drug house she leaves her van barking orders to someone inside her vehicle as she walks to the house. This routine stakeout soon turns chaotic and Dik is left with black eye and bruised ego.

A phone call the next day for Savannah has her on a homicide case for a close friend. A Hollywood legend is dead and clues are difficult to uncover. Dirk is assigned the case so the duo works with the Moonlight Magnolia team with the hopes of allowing the 90 year old to be laid to rest.

This is another fantastic book in the Savannah Reid Mystery series. This book contains a subplot that might be a little predictable, but it's heartwarming just the same. The new characters in this book are well developed and easy to picture. I didn’t figure out the murderer until just before the perpetrator was revealed. The plot is very engaging. I almost read the entire book in one sitting. I did not want to put it down. I’m only disappointed that I now have to wait so long for the next book. I recommend this book and I highly recommend this series.

While keeping her husband company on a stakeout, Savannah Reid and her husband, Dirk, come across a woman with a pile of drugs and a young boy in her van. Having both come from rough childhoods, Savannah and Dirk agree to care for the boy until a foster family can be found for him.

When Savannah gets a call from a friend and client, both she and Dirk find themselves working the case of a former Hollywood star who was found murdered in her mansion. Between the case and their young charge, Savannah needs to find the right balance with the changes. Granny Reid to the rescue as everyone learns to adapt to their new, happy normal.

The members of the Magnolia Detective Agency find themselves helping sort through a ton of trash the former star had accumulated as part of her hoarding problem. Why would someone kill the woman and leave her in the famous pose from her younger days? With just a great grandson left behind, the police begin to focus on him as their primary suspect when they find that he had been disinherited by the woman. But while they suspect him, they don’t have the proof they need to arrest him. Can Savannah and Dirk find the evidence they need to arrest the murderer and the balance they need in their lives or will they go down for the count?

I love this series and often find myself relating to Savannah throughout the books. Family is everything for her and I’m so glad that she shares them with us in the books as well. This one really gave me warm fuzzies and I can’t wait for the next one!

And the Killer Is... by G.A. McKevett 5 stars

This the newest Savannah Reid mystery after last years "Bitter Brew". It is always a delight to visit with the members of the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency. We start this story with Savannah and her husband Dirk on a stakeout of a suspected drug house. After some activity and a few arrests that results with Savannah bringing home a little boy named Brody. The mystery part of this book is the murder of a 90 year old former movie star in her 1920"s Art Deco mansion. Ethan Malloy from "Hide and Sneak" returns in this book as the client that hires Savannah to solve the murder of Lucinda Faraday. The mystery itself was OK, but what brings me back time and again to this series is the interaction between characters. During this historic time, we all need a little levity and some Southern attitude and this book supplies it in spades. This book also provides something that was missing in Savannah's and Dirk's life that I will enjoy reading about in future books. I can't wait until next years entry of this series.

Thank you Netgalley and Kensington Books for this ARC.

And the Killer Is... by G. A. McKevett is book twenty five in the A Savannah Reid Mystery. This is a great series but can be read as a stand alone.
During a stake out with her detective husband, Dirk, Savannah spots a child in a vehicle that is at the drug house they are watching. Getting the child quietly to safety proves the first adventure and brings back childhood memories for Savannah. The child's mother is arrested and the child goes home with Savannah for the night. Before she can get settle in, a former client shows help needing to hire her for an investigation into the murder of his dear friend, Lucinda Faraday. Faraday is ninety years old former movie star now, living in her mansion as a hoarder. Dirk and Savannah find her body in a pile of trash in a not so nice pose, strangled with a pair of silk nylons. Who hated Lucinda is what Savannah wants to know but once she starts questioning people, who didn't hate Lucinda.
There are plenty of suspects that have you guessing until the end, enjoyable characters and critters, a great side story, romance, love of family and humor.
I was given an ARC by NetGalley and Kensington Books for an honest review.

I enjoyed Savannah Reid much more before she married her partner/friend/nemesis/love Dirk. They were both more interesting. They're married and now it's constant ruminating on Dirks faults and how she loves him anyway and he loves her as she indulges his poor manners and big appetite. Yawn.

And the Killer Is . . . is like too many mysteries these days, with focus too many side stories and uninteresting red herrings, until, voila! the story is solved. It's like eating a salad for dinner. It's a good salad with interesting components but by bedtime you are hungry again.

And the Killer Is . . . is sadly quite boring and nauseatingly repetitive. All the main characters are all getting stagnant and predictable. It would be my last Savannah Reid novel except they are getting a new family member as well as a Reid sister who has moved to California. I'm not sure it will rescue Savannah from the stars in her eyes and awful Dirk dialogue, but I'll probably to give it a (last) chance.

Former police officer turned PI Savannah Reid gets called by a former client to investigate the death of an old Hollywood Starlet. Is it something from her torrid past or troubled present that led to her death?

Maybe it’s because I’m not a true cozy mystery diehard fan but I found part of this book hard to swallow. First, Savannah used her status as a former police officer and husband’s current police officer status to be present during all parts of a murder investigation. He even takes her out to interview suspects instead of someone still on the force. And while her down home southern charm may be endearing in the larger context of the series, I got quickly bored of all the metaphors/similes. I also was not a big fan of her excusing her husband’s abrasive and at times inappropriate behavior.
I don’t normally go into mystery/thriller books looking for realism but if you’re going to go through the trouble of outlining previous and current law enforcement connections, maybe don’t have everyone they know at a crime scene for evidence collection.

Basically 2 different plots with what was supposed to be the main one taking a bit of a backseat to the other. It's a solid story but gets a bit "preachy " about the evils of old Hollywood, drugs, child abuse, etc. I tend to skip over those parts to get back to the actual mystery.

Private investigator Savannah Reid goes on a stakeout with her husband Detective Sergeant Dirk Coulter. Their bust is successful and they end up taking home the drug-dealer’s six-year-old son Brody. While taking care of this abused and neglected boy, Savannah also starts work on a case for one of her former clients, Hollywood heartthrob Ethan Malloy. Ethan has been close friends with the elderly Lucinda Faraday, a movie star from the 1940s and 1950s who was murdered in her home. Dirk, Savannah, and the rest of the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency have their work cut out for them in a case that becomes more complicated as more suspects and motives are uncovered.

This book is part of the long-running Savannah Reid series, but I haven’t followed it. The author gives just enough backstory to allow new readers to enjoy the story without being overwhelmed in history and supporting characters. Savannah is originally from Georgia but has now settled in San Carmelita, California. Maybe it’s her southern charm, but even though the book deals with very serious subjects like drug abuse, drug dealing, hoarding, and child abuse, it still keeps an overall entertaining and cozy feel. I enjoyed seeing Savannah on the job and at home with her Granny Reid, husband, and young Brody, who is both wise beyond his years and vulnerable. I wasn’t sold on Dirk in the beginning. He is out-spoken, tactless, and sometimes immature. However, when Savannah called him and asked him to come home as soon as possible because she had bad news she wanted to share with him in person, he rushed home to support her, no questions asked. At that point, he won me over, and he continued to show a softer side throughout the rest of the book.

I like the way Dirk and Savannah work together to solve the case, with research help from Savannah’s capable assistant Tammy and the wise Granny Reid. They uncover some scandalous secrets which open up the number of suspects and it was entertaining to see the investigation progress. I kept changing my mind about who I thought the real killer was and it turned out to be someone not even on my radar. I enjoyed the way the case wraps up and also the sweet ending for Savannah and her family. I enjoyed the book and the developments that occur toward the end have me intrigued to see what is in store for Savannah and Dirk.

And the Killer Is . . . is the twenty-fifth installment in G. A. McKevett’s Savannah Reid Mystery series. The author provides enough character background that this book can be read as a standalone without the reader feeling lost. The storyline is well thought out, and the well-developed characters are affable. The dialogue is witty and engaging, and full of compassion and caring, there’s some adult language, but no graphic violence or sexually explicit situations. This quickly-paced whodunit is well-plotted, with enough suspects, twists, and red herrings kept readers engaged and guessing until the reveal.

Savannah Reid, a former detective turned private investigator, accompanied her husband, Detective Sergeant Dirk Coulter, on a stakeout at a drug house. Savannah spots a woman, who is obviously under the influence of drugs or alcohol, exit her van and enter the home. Savannah realizes there is a young child in the woman’s van and knows they must rescue him before the woman returns. After they secure in their car, they learn CPS’s only option is to place the young child, whose name is Brody Greyson, in a group home, so the compassionate couple makes arrangements to provide him with temporary shelter in their San Carmelita, California home. When a previous client, successful film star, and friend, Ethan Malloy, contacts Savannah that same night, she rushes to the address he provides. Ethan hires Savanna to figure out who murdered his elderly friend, Lucinda Faraday, a silver-screen star from the late forties and early fifties. Since Dirk is assigned to the investigation, Savannah and the members of the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency are busy helping him, Granny Reid steps in to help care for Brody. The case is a difficult one, and the investigation is hampered by the fact that Lucinda was a serious hoarder.

I received an Advance Reader Copy of this book from NetGalley and voluntarily reviewed it.

I have been reading G. A. McKevett's Savannah Reid mysteries since the very first book. And the Killer is . . . is the 25th book in the series. Some long running series get stale or redundant after so many books, but And the Killer Is . . . definitely does not fall into that category. It is always fun to catch up with the members of Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency and this latest installment does not disappoint.

In this mystery, Private Investigator, Savannah Reid, and her policeman husband, Dirk Coulter, are dealing with two important cases. The first centers around a drug deal arrest that involves a precocious little boy named Brody. The second case centers on a former screen siren, Lucinda Faraday, who has been found murdered in her dilapidated mansion. Ethan Malloy, whose tragic case Savannah solved back in Hide and Seek, was friends with the murdered actress. He hires Savannah to find justice for Lucinda. To make matters more complicated, Lucinda was a hoarder, which makes searching for evidence in her mansion tougher.

McKevett writes the colorful characters so well that they really come alive on the page. You can always count on Dr. Liu, Kenny, John and Ryan, Tammy, Granny Reid, and at least one or two of Savannah's siblings to make an appearance.

There is not a huge cast of characters as to whodunit, but the book still keeps you guessing until the end. One of the things I like about this series is that Savannah is not always a damsel in distress in the end. She always gets put in harm's way, but she is able to hold her own (with Dirk as her backup) against any killer that comes against her. Savannah takes the rough and touch times with the good times. Family comes first for her. And she does it all with her Southern attitude.

The only thing that I did not like was the title and the cover of the book. I did not think it was too reflective of what the mystery was truly about.

"Hey! What the bloody hell do you think you're doin' there woman?"

A stakeout of a drug house ends with Savannah and Dirk temporary foster parents of a young boy. The same night, Savannah receives a call from her new friend Ethan Malloy asking her to come to the home of an older Hollywood star that he has found deceased.

This is one of my all time favorite series. I love Savannah's Southernisms, her wacko family, her found family through the detective agency, Granny Reid, the cats, and Dirk. Now we can add Mr. Brody Greyson to the mix. I love that he introduces himself that way. Definitely a child wiser than his years. The fact that he is also Southern adds to the charm.

Ethan has found the body of his friend Lucinda Faraday. Lucinda was a Hollywood Golden Age star. The mystery provides glimpses into that era filled with gangsters, corruption, and secrets. This opens up a bevy of suspects for the murder. The slimy great grandson is at the top of the list with his past criminal record.

This book had a good balance of family and the mystery. It was great to see more of Granny Reid as she helped with Brody. Granny's bloodhound provided Brody with an instant friend. I always enjoy getting to know more about Savannah's family. I was pleased that Dirk was onboard about taking Brody in although I imagine he saw a lot of himself in the boy.

The mystery had me guessing until the end. I was looking at the wrong person until forensic evidence revealed the culprit.

I read this series out of order which is very unlike me. So I have read the next book which seems to be the last one for now. I may need to reread it to visit with Brody.

This is an excellent series that I highly recommend.

And the Killer is...well, to start with, it's the 25th book in the series. I'm going to say this is the best one yet. Savannah Reid and the team that makes up the Moonlight Magnolia Detective Agency are drawn into a strange case when the strangled corpse of a 90 year old former silver screen star is found amidst the trash that fills her once glorious mansion. In her later years, Lucinda Faraday had become a major hoarder but who would want the elderly woman dead? Well, it turns out that she wasn't all that nice and the words secrets and sordid come to mind. Somebody wanted those secrets buried forever and Savannah may be getting in the way. But when it's a friend of Savannah's who wants answers, Savannah won't hesitate to investigate.
If that wasn't enough, she is on a stake out with her husband, Dirk, involving a drug bust when he arrests a young mother for drug possession and savannah and Dirk take custody of her son. One thing is certain about Savannah, she has a big heart.
From the great puzzle complete with the twists, turns and red herrings to the time I love spending with the friends and family and members of the agency, my favorite character - after Savannah, of course - is Granny Reid. I wish I had a grandmother like her.
If you are new to this series, don't worry, this works as a stand alone but be warned...if you enjoy your time spent with Savannah, Dirk, Granny Reid and the rest, be ready to play catch up. You will be in for some very well crafted mysteries. I already have a spot on my TBR list for #26.
My thanks to the publisher Kensington and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Princess Fuzzypants here: Sometimes you have the good fortune to stumble across a series where you just like the characters. You find they are the kinds of people you would choose to know in real life. I have always found both the Savannah Reid and Granny Reid books to be just that sort. From their down home expressions that often hit the mark most eloquently to their big hearts not just for their family but for other, they are people worth your time. This is no exception.
Savannah and Dirk are called to the scene of a murder of an old Hollywood star. The victim has become a hoarder and when they enter her mansion, it is all anyone can do not to choke. She was elderly when she died but she lived a very steamy life before her obsession with stuff took over. It is clear that for whomever killed her, it was highly personal. Now it is their jobs to try and find out who it was and retrieve a very “hot” autobiography she had been writing.
At the same time, they are trying to help a young boy whose drug addled/dealing mother has abandoned him. The kid comes off hard boiled but once Savannah and Granny work their magic, the sweet kid underneath comes out. At the same time they are working on the murder, they are also trying to give him a family life and security that he has never known. It is both heartwarming and endearing. Which is one of the reasons I can recommend these books. They will have a good mystery but they also have heart. I can recommend the combination.
Five purrs and two paws up.

I've read some of this series and have the rest on my TBR list. I think this is the best yet.
P.I. And former police detective Savannah Reid has been hired bu an old friend to solve the murder of a good friend of his, Lucinda Faraday....right after she and her husband Dirk's drug house survellience was rewarded with a bust. The bust left her with the custody of an angry and abused 6 or 7 year old boy, one that fought tooth and nail to release his mother from Dirk's grip.
They leave the boy on Granny Reid's custody to go to the murder scene, as Dirk caught the case and are surprised and shocked by the scene. The hoarder's paradise they find makes evidence collection difficult, as they interview the companion, it becomes clear someone has to search through the detrius... and a the officer on scene, Dirk is the one.
The pair chase down every bit of information to find out the killer, one that was a surprise as well as get a few more arrests, related but not directly connected.
Ms. McKevett adds a little romance, some wonderful family interaction, supportive friends, humor and a bit of social injustice in the form of child abuse recovery, past and present, to make a tale with a uplifting end. She gives the characters distinct personalities, pointing out their foibles as such, just another facet of their personality.
I requested and received a NetGalley ARC ..much to my delight and couldn't put it down til the end.
