Wolf Creek #1

Black Wolf

Rate this book
Adam Bates is in trouble. He's virtually penniless, is being threatened by his landlord, and now he's late for work at his new job. Expecting to be chastened by his boss, Adam doesn't expect Cody to provide him with a protector instead. He definitely doesn't expect his minder to be a big, bad wolf with attitude.

Marcus Black has just arrived at Del Fantasma after his latest black ops mission. He's ready for some R and R, but Marcus won't refuse Cody when he asks him to help a little tabby cat. When Adam is threatened by his landlord in front of Marcus, his alpha wolf won't let him stand by and let it happen.

Adam is about to find strength in submission, and his own set of claws. Marcus is about to find the mate he's been searching for in a deceptively small tabby. Now, if only they can hold on long enough to survive.

What's that, kitty cat? Furry ballsacks are the new black?

At the beginning of my love affair with M/M Romance I read the original version of this story. I loved it and always wished it was longer. I got my wish. There are , however, a lot of differences between this revised version and the original one.

Adam's a pretty little itty bitty kitty; a Twinky McTwinkerson. He's been on his own for no more than two weeks and when we meet him he's waking up after having the crap beat out of him by his landlord; Mr. Sleazariffic. So, there's our little Adam, limping his way to work after his Epic Beatdown. He works at a place called Wolfcreek Bar & Grill. It's run by the Black brothers who are...wolf shifters!! Crazy, huh?

Adam gets to work and meets the Black brother who's been travelling for the last couple of months, Marcus Black. Marus is the super toppy and things go something like this.

Black brother #1: Adam, tell me who beat you while you drink this shot and my mysterious brother Marcus stares at you all possessive and semi-creepy like.

Adam: I fell. How do I drink this?

Marcus: Open your throat like you'll have to when I shove my dick down your gullet. Yum, yum kitty cat, drink up. *stare stare stare*

Adam: ......

Marcus: Yeah, I just said that. Heh heh heh.

After that Marcus pretty much scruffs Adam and takes Adam back to the scene of the Epic Beatdown a.k.a. Adam's apartment. There's a showdown with the landlord Sleazariffic and five other dudes but those dudes weren't expecting a wolf...and a house cat. Don't forget the tiny tabby. Vicious.

The last scene of this story was just a bit quirky but that's cool. I don't mind quirky and it was cute. All in all this updated version of the story was as cute as the original. There was nothing special about it but it was a good time filler and worth the $2.99 or so that I spent on it.

Cats and wolves are not supposed to get along, but Adam (a werecat) and Marcus (a werewolf) couldn’t care less once they meet and realize they are mates. Not too many others seem to bat an eyelash at the situation, either. Not surprising in a place where a bar owned by a family of werewolves seems to be the center of social activity. Well, definitely for the supernatural members of the community.

Adam may ‘only’ be a tabby shifter and starts out as rather lonely and helpless, but once he ‘finds his claws’ – watch out world. The puny human who tried to terrorize Adam is in for a nasty surprise. I really liked how Adam slowly grows more self-confident and manages to leave his father’s stupid prejudice against gay men behind.

Marcus may be an aloha werewolf with somewhat domineering tendencies, but he is also very caring. His first concern is Adam’s well-being and he exercises self-control to the point of self-denial. Only initially though, once his mate begins to trust him, he is able to be himself again. It’s a good thing Adam really likes him the way he is!

If you like shifter stories, if mates being attracted to each other and becoming a couple within hours of meeting is what you’re looking for, and if the humor of a cat and a wolf trying to live together makes you grin, you will probably like this book.

Note: I read the original version, published in 2008 by Aspen Mountain Press, but have to say that this new expanded version is even better.

This is for the new release book.
Still a Great story. Many things have changed in the new version, the name of bar is now “Wolf Creek Bar and Grill” and is owned by Marcus and his brothers. Brother Rick is behind bar now (Cody isn't there). It has a quite a bit around Marcus's family and another chapter at the end.

Looks like a good series coming up. Marcus has 3 brothers hopefully they will all get a M/M story...

A very short ebook about how a submissive were-tabby and a dominant were-wolf got together - I like pack hierarchy so it pushed all my buttons. It was a cute piece, not really memorable, but still cute. I liked the tiny details - like Adam not having hair but fur on his head - and even though it was mostly a PWP, it was still a nice read.

Ok

Short shifter story that works because it is shifters with the instant mate attraction and bond. There wasn’t a lot of character development but I didn’t really expect it at the page count.
I liked Adam and felt for him with the way his parents reacted. Marcus needed a little bit more work
All in all an ok quick read

Cute and fun. Though the bit where they give Adam the shot to drink...I think I would slap someone who said that to me...or at least been super turned off. Maybe I'm just repressed?

Right off the bat, I didn’t like Marcus. How am I supposed to like a MC who’s thoughts in response to a woman at the bar batting her eyelashes at him is that it *”only served to make him want to slap her upside the head and tell her to go out some damn clothes on”*. Yuck, Marcus.

And then I love how the response to Adam saying he doesn’t drink is to make him a drink. God forbid we let someone not consume alcohol.

I did get a bit excited when Adam stated, *”He wouldn’t belong to anyone. Not ever.”* But then he immediately throws that out the window. Zero resistance or reluctance and Marcus is slurping down in cock in no time.

Also, oddly, these guys have their first kiss after a blowjob and then semi public sex on Marcus’s brother’s desk.

But the humour just really killed it for me. All the “pussy” double entendres. Har har, he is a cat, we get it. But Marcus’s brother commenting on the “well oiled pussy” was too much. So was the “donkey dick”, “horse cock” and sausage stuff in regards to literal sausage. And the talking about the uncle’s colon and polyps while eating was supposed to be funny, I guess? Not my kind of humour at all.

The whole thing is over-the-top

Warning: This review might contain what some people consider SPOILERS.

Rating: 5/10

PROS:
- I love the idea of a canine shifter and a feline shifter being mates.
- It’s sweet how careful and considerate Marcus is with his small partner.
- Marcus’s family is loud and boisterous and fun. And their immediate acceptance of Adam, especially since he’s a) male and b) a feline shifter, made me like them even more. I also liked the idea that Marcus’s family could smell the “mate bond” on Adam before Marcus and Adam had even met.

CONS:
- The story is one of the most melodramatic I’ve read in this genre. The two main men are basically caricatures of the Strong Hero and the Dude in Distress, and their reactions to simple external stimuli are incredibly out of proportion the majority of the time.
- Everything happens very quickly. (One example of this is the way the two men jump immediately into bed together even though Adam has never been with anyone before. That first time together simply lacked something for me: they move too quickly, they haven’t known each other long enough, they don’t make a big enough deal out of it being Adam’s first time, etc.) True, the story covers a period of only a couple of days, but a number of life-altering events occur in that amount of time, and we don’t see any deep mental/emotional processing of any of them.

Overall comments: If you’re not a fan of melodrama, definitely avoid this one. I thought it was amusing but ultimately unsatisfying: there’s nothing special about the caliber of the writing, and I rolled my eyes more times than I wanted to count.

2015 Re-read:

That was just completely adorable and sweet, with just the right amount of uncouth to add some spice.
This being the second edition it already features some added stuff, but as far as I am concerned it could be a lot longer, simply because I like it so much. It works perfectly fine at its current length regardless.

It’s a strange feeling and fun to revisit these “older” stories. I should do this a lot more often.

The only problem with this story was that it was tooo short.

Second time reading.
Like the second addition, it did add more to the storyline.

I have to say it: it's not the normal.
Simplemente no.

Very fun piece of fluff. Not a lot of exposition or romance, but definitely some hot insta-lust mate bonding and a hilarious huge wolf family. Looking forward to the other two stories.

Del Fantasma: Black Wolf by Jade Buchanan
Wolf Creek, Book 1
3 Stars
Reviewed for www.heartsonfirereviews.com

Adam is a tabby cat shifter. So cute, right? He left his parents house when his father found him kissing a boy. His parents did not kick him out but they certainly do not approve of same sex pairings. They expect Adam to settle down with several females and start breeding his own family. Adam may have difficulty standing up for himself but he refuses to live a lie and leaves home for the first time in his life. He has only been living on his own in Wolf Creek for a couple of weeks but he already has a job the Del Fantasma bar and his own tiny apartment. Adam is inexperienced and naïve but he is trying to find his way in the world. After being severly beaten by his sleazebag landlord, he wakes up on the floor of his apartment and realizes that he is a couple of hours late for work. He drags his battered body into work and he is in for the surprise of his life, he is about to meet his mate.

Marcus, a big bad wolf shifter, has just got back into town and stops in to see Cody, the owner of Del Fantasma bar. In a bar full of humans and shifters, he smells the sweetest scent ever. He locates the badly beaten but gorgeous little man that the scent belongs to and realizes that he has finally found his mate. There was not a lot of character development done on Marcus. He is a grumpy guy who is a lot of bark except when it comes to the safety of his mate, the he is the typical growly Alpha who is going do everything in his power to protect the man that fate gave to him.

This is a very simple storyline. Little submissive kitty shifter meets his big, bad Alpha wolf mate and they overcome a couple of obstacles and live HEA. There is no real angst, just a simple entertaining shifter story. I must say that my only complaint is how forceful Marcus is. I know that he is a crabby guy who expects people to fall in line at his command but I didn’t like seeing this extend to Adam as much as it did.

Putting the glass to his lower lip, he considered it for a moment. How the heck did someone drink a shot?
“You have to open your throat. Relax. Besides, you should get used to it.”
Adam sputtered, moving the shot glass away just in time.
“Wh-why would I have to get used to it?”
Marcas grinned, raising an eyebrow. “I’m a big man. I don’t want you to choke, so it’s a good idea to learn how to relax your throat now.”

This scene happens within minutes of meeting his badly beaten mate and it just rubbed me the wrong way. I find it to be thoughtless and rude due to the timing. Despite that, this is nice little story that most shifter lovers would enjoy reading.

This was a fun quick story about a Cat shifter,Adam, who came to the Black Creek bar and grill to begin his fresh start away from home. Adam is a sweet young naive man who just wants to prove himself, but gets into trouble right away. He is broken and bleeding when he tries to make his way to work. When he arrives at the shifter bar, nothing is as he expected. His boss Rick treats his injuries with concern and has no intentions of firing him, but the big surprised is Rick's younger brother, Marcus who has just answered Rick's summons to return home.

Marcus, a wolf shifter like the rest of his brothers comes back to the family bar and his home. He is impatient to discover whatever it is that his brother wants until his keen nose smells the sweet scent of his mate. He follows the scent to the sweet little cat shifter who is worried about his job and just wants to hush up his injuries. His little mate smells of pain and fear. Marcus is eager to act the big bad wolf for whomever did this to Adam.

The plot is simple and pacing good to match the length. The characters were described well. I loved how in this story shifters could change into just about anything. The mating thing made it insta-attraction/passion, but there were some sweet stuff too.

Very enjoyable and I look forward to reading about the rest of the Black family with all those rambunctious brothers and cousins.

I LOVED this story. I admit it – I’m a sucker for dominant alpha males protecting their mates. And Marcus does not disappoint. He’s big, scary and hot, hot, HOT! Plus the werewolf is a special ops agent to boot. How sexy is that? Cody, the owner of Del Fantasma, guilts him into taking some time off and visiting the club. Where a young, very naïve tabby cat is in need of some protection from an unlikely enemy. Adam isn’t your typical submissive, though. He’s from the country and oblivious to the dangers of life in the city at first, but he’s not dim – just inexperienced. And he does have spirit. Now, Marcus has plenty of experience and is happy to share it with enough steam to keep a reader sweating. Plus, I just plain liked both men. Jade has a way of imbuing her characters with charm and appeal that just adds to the eroticism. I was rooting for Marcus to swoop in and rescue Adam just as much as I wanted Adam to find his inner strength.
Overall, I highly recommend this novella for fans of erotic M/M romance who also like some paranormal spice and a good story. I was captured from the first few lines and sucked in to the end. Was this some great masterpiece of mystery or drama? No, just a great ride (pun intended). The sex is hot and the plot is more than enough to sustain the length. Plus it's a great backdrop for two fun characters I wouldn’t mind visiting with again.

Adam was a shapeshifter tabby cat for the first time alone far from home. He is only twenty years old and he is still a little skittish. He doesn't know how strong he can be and that he can fight back who tries to harm him. Plus he is still a virgin, and he feels that it's time for him to find a partner.

All his problems finds a solution when Marcus arrives at Del Fantasma, the club where Adam works. Marcus is a shapeshifter black wolf and when he smells Adam's scent he knows that he has found his mate, but first he has to find the man who has dared to harm the little cat.

The story is pretty short, less than 50 pages, but like all the stories by Jade Buchanan is really funny and the characters, even if the book is short, have a strong personalization. For sure I like a lot Adam, and not only cause I have a passion for cats... Adam is so naive and innocent that awakens all your protective instincts, and above all those of Marcus.

Of Marcus we don't know much, but he is a very alpha male, with a penchant for little spitfire...

Del Fantasma series is a very enjoyble and funny paranormal series of short stories.

Black Wolf is wonderful story about the power of true love. From the moment they meet, Adam and Marcus know that they are meant to be together, destined to be mates. The intensity of their pairing and emotional bond are both captivating and engaging. Although the story is short, it covers a wide range of emotions from fear and anger to passion and excitement.

The characters of Adam and Marcus are both well written and interesting, and Adam in particular draws the reader in from the first page. Adam is trying so hard to prove to his family, and himself, that he can survive on his own and it is distressing that he is being threatened. It is wonderful to watch as he comes into his own with Marcus’s help and encouragement, discovering strength that even he didn’t know existed.

Shapeshifters are always fun to read about and this pairing in particular is unique and entertaining. Though there are serious moments, there is also quite a bit of humor with the innuendos and verbal sparring that takes place. Black Wolf is a must read and an excellent addition to the Del Fantasma series!

This book was reviewed for Musings of a bookworm

This is just a sweet story of a man in trouble and how he gets out of trouble and the love he finds along the way. It is the opener to a series and I have to say it is a series I will be reading. Now although I really liked this little tales I had one very big problem with it. The ending just stopped it felt like the story was only half way through and it stopped. I will be honest how the book ends is just as important to me as how it progresses. If the book is a print book I read the last page to gauge if I will like the book, I don't do that with e-books, mainly because I can only do that after I have bought the book and well its a bit late then. I just find myself very exasperated that an author will write a really great beginning and middle and then just not really take the same time with the ending.... what's up with that!!!!!

Right from the start I loved the characters. Yes, it had all of the traditional cliches of shifter books: the big, mean alpha; insta-love through finding a mate; the younger, more submissive character who needs protection and guidance. But they all worked for me in this story.

Plus, there were some wonderfully original ideas included here also. The shifter whose animal form is a tabby cat is what originally caught my interest (well, after the beautiful P.L. Nunn cover on the newly released edition). And the scene with said tabby fighting has to be among the funniest shifter scenes I've ever read.

I just wish we'd gotten to know the characters a little better. I know this is the first book in a series, I just wish it hadn't felt like it was just an introduction rather than a whole story.

The Del Fantasma series had some really great books, and two of the best were the two done by Jade Buchanan and I just found on her website that the books are being revised and expanded under the series name Wolf Creek! In which case, I will probably buy and read them again!!!
This series has some different shifters, in this case, a tabby cat that gets a wolf as a protector, but if you have read any of Jade's work, you know that she makes this unusual set up work well! You even get an appearance from another author's character that led me to search out that story in the series as well (in the Del Fantasma version, not sure about the revised one!).
A good read the first time, I'm looking forward to the new version!

The only way to describe this book is different. Not different bad, just different. The characters were unusual (to say the least) but they were all funny and entertaining. I felt that as soon as it was getting started it ended though. I know this is part of a series so I am hoping more details will come out the more I read.

One thing I was not happy about was it ending at 89% on my Kindle and then jumping into info on the next book. That's kind of a pet peeve of mine but no biggie. I knew it was short going in.

Overall a good story. I look forward to seeing what happens next.

Scott could come back at any moment and Adam heads to the only place he feels safe, Del Fantasma, the bar where he works...

Marcus is solid as a rock and, as an Alpha, knows his mate when he smells him. Adam is a lovely change from the typical mate to the Alpha wolf, jaguar, vampire, etc... because who wouldn't love a tabby?

I laughed - a lot - through this story, cheered when Adam let his claws out, and loved when they got their HEA. JB did a wonderful job and I had no doubt they were meant to be together. I recommend this one when you're looking for short read that will leave you feeling good.

Of course, now I'll forever giggle when I hear the word blow...

Engaging in the beginning, but towards the end it really kind of peters off, and the 'danger' toward Adam just doesn't quite click right. It just seemed like the guy after him was expending way too much pressure and energy to harrass and abuse a single young man, and a recent stranger at that.

The romance was kind of shallow and maybe a little stilted. If it had been fleshed out a bit more, possibly about 40 more pages, I think it would have been a lot better.

What a fun read! This is my first book of the Del Fantasma series and am definitely looking forward to reading more. In Black Wolf, we have a tabby shifter in trouble who is rescued by a big, bad alpha wolf, who just so happens to be his mate. This is just a well written short, feel good story that is definitely worth a read. Recommended!

I read these out of order, but I don't think it really mattered.
I also liked the second one better but this one was cute, Tabby Adam and wolf Marcus are both likeable guys.
The blurb might not be quite accurate, it makes it sound a bit more dramatic than the story really is IMO.
But a quick light read.

Didn't give much background. There is a little history of some charactors, but not about the shifter world in general. Probally going to try the next in the series, its a M/M/M romance, but I don't know if I would recomand it to others unless they are lovers of all things shifters.
