For all things Clare Connelly, please see www.clareconnelly.co.uk, the official home of Clare Connelly on the web.

Clare Connelly grew up in a small country town in Australia. Surrounded by rainforests, and rickety old timber houses, magic was thick in the air, and stories and storytelling were a huge part of her childhood.

From early on in life, Clare realised her favourite books were romance stories, and read voraciously. Anything from Jane Austen to Georgette Heyer, to Mills & Boon and (more recently) 50 Shades, Clare is a romance devotee. She first turned her hand to penning a novel at fifteen (if memory serves, it was something about a glamorous fashion model who fell foul of a high-end designer. Sparks flew, clothes flew faster, and love was born.)

Clare has a small family and a bungalow near the sea. When she isn't chasing after energetic little toddlers, or wiping fingerprints off furniture, she's writing, thinking about writing, or wishing she were writing.

‘You will become my mistress. For two weeks.’

He held his hand up, two fingers raised.

‘In exchange,’ he added darkly, ‘I will show you a kind of pleasure you can only imagine.’

She's got an itch and he's got a very big scratcher...

It's been a long time since I've read a good, angsty mistress trope story. It used to be so popular in vintage HPlandia, but it hasn't surfaced much in recent years.

In this novel, the mistress trope takes on a new incarnation, though, because the mistress arrangement is just slated to last for a mere 2 weeks.

The mistress trope is one of my guilty, secret HPlandia pleasures, because it's a chance to see the *good girl* heroine explore her *naughty* side, while knowing that she's going to end up with the H in the end...

In vintage HPlandia, the mistress trope gets activated mainly as a result of blackmail or because the H's desirous of vengeance. In fewer instances, we'll encounter a truly lascivious H, who just wants the heroine to polish his penis and thinks he's got the right bargaining chip:

‘If Laurence thought I would lose my mind and simply agree to sign on the bottom line, then he played an excellent bargaining chip.’

He dropped his head lower so his lips were only inches from hers.

‘I suspect one night with you would be worth half a billion pounds.’

In this novel Jemima ( the supermodel heroine ) needs Cesare ( the multi billionaire H ) to become a partner in her cousin Lawrence's hedge fund. Her family's ancestral estate, Aylmer Hall, depends on it.

The MC's meet when Lawrence invites Jemima to a business lunch with the H. The H realizes immediately that Lawrence is trying to use his sexy cousins to butter him up, because Cesare is infamous for his dalliances with the most beautiful women in the world.

The MC's are gripped with a intense case of mutual insta-lust and end up spending the night together. This one night stand isn't part of any bargain or mistress arrangement. That happens later on.

After the one night stand, the H is angry, because he'd assumed that the heroine was an experienced woman of the world. His only previous experience with a virgin, had been in his teens and that girl had been tearful and full of expectations for a permanent relationship.

Jemima quickly sets him straight and tells him she's not filled with any naive expectations.

This is the heroine, Jemima:

This is the H, Cesare:

Anyway, after an acrimonious parting, the MC's meet again when the heroine turns up at his office to find out if he's investing in the hedge fund or not. During their time apart, he's been obsessing about her and she's literally been having lots of erotic nighttime dreams about him...

Cesare, who's perceptive enough to realize that her family desperately needs this investment, offers a 2 week mistress contract arrangement. He deliberately refrains from telling her that he'd already planned on investing in the hedge fund.

He's desperate to get her in his bed again and thinks that this contract is the easiest way to do it. She, who's been literally dreaming about him, agrees because she thinks she can kill 2 birds with one stone: acquire the investment and sate her own lust so that she'll stop thinking about him all the time.

Before meeting the H, Jemima had never been interested in other men. This H's obviously in possession of some seriously enchanted wood ! It's definitely worked its magic on her and she thinks that she can get him out of her system in 2 weeks' time; after which, her life can return to normal.

But, this doesn't happen during their 2 weeks together...

In fact, both MC's become more obsessed with each other, even though each tries hard to hide it. By the second week, they've started to confide in each other and both are aware that this arrangement merely complicates things further.

I also enjoyed how Cesare, who'd never been jealous or possessive over a woman before, became very peeved and upset when he thought that the heroine had slept with an unknown man, after their one night stand.

The heroine didn't intend to give him that inaccurate impression, but, in a moment of anger when he'd been extremely arrogant, she'd implied, it just to dent his ego and teach him that he's not that special...

Cesare is so desperate for more time with her, that he requests a one month extension on the mistress contract. She's already acknowledged, to herself, that she loves him so she refuses to stay unless it's for a meaningful long term relationship. Not only does he not want any commitment, but he's also biased against Jemima because she comes from an old, titled, blue blooded family.

The obstinate H, who's got a huge chip on his shoulders about being dependent on another person, for his happiness, refuses to consider it. He still foolishly believes that their connection is based solely on lust and will inevitably die a natural death if they spend just one more month together.

After they part this time, he takes himself off to his isolated cabin in Alaska, where he's still unable to get over her. After a month apart, he realizes that he's in love with her and hopes he's not blown his chance. He stalks her at her cousin Lawrence's party, where he's inflamed with jealousy watching all the men who ogle, and dance with, her:

This was his choice. All of it.
He watched her dance and felt as though he was being lit on fire.

With a growl, he stalked from the ballroom, pressing his back to the darkly painted wall opposite, his eyes trained on the door.

He would stand here and he would wait. God help him if she emerged with the other man.

What if they were seeing each other? Sleeping together?
His fist pumped. Insanity seemed to burst inside him.

He could picture her body, but never with any one else. It wasn’t possible.

As is the norm for most of Clare Connelly's novels, the H gives a good grovel before the heroine agrees to accept his proposal. And there's a mini epilogue, set on their wedding day when she informs him that he'll be a dad in 7 months' time.

Safety: No OW, no OM, no cheating and both MC's are celibate during their 2 short separations.

Reread...5/18/2022....Still a five star read..
Thoroughly enjoyed this one as it had everything I enjoy in my HP romances.
Angsty and sensual read that focused on the H/h.
Blackmail trope with an Italian billionaire hero.
Virgin model heroine who was sweet and not a " bitchy" heroine.
Great grovel by the hero, heroine made him work for it!

I forgot the sexual tension and chemistry these two had.
So appreciated how their relationship evolved and grew to love. This heroine was tenacious and strong. But her demeanor was also kind and she had a tender heart. Her love was able to help this hard headed and stubborn hero to one who let down his walls and who loved and adored her.
And what a great epilogue but being greedy in wanting it to be several pages longer.
Highly recommended.

Enjoyable read.
Liked the characters.
Story line was well paced and love the chemistry between the two mc.
Good epilogue too.
Short and sweet.

Sweet "blackmail" story of a billionaire hero who is cut off from his feelings and a supermodel virgin heroine who just wants love.

It's been done before, but thankfully the heroine isn't a complete ninny and hero only has a sad backstory - not a horrific one.

The hero's insistence on setting time limit to their encounters (a one night stand, then two weeks, then a month) really highlighted his emotional stupidity. The money dangling was an even more egregious tell of his adolescent mentality. Poor hero had no self-worth - at one point heroine even felt sorry for him.

So beta in alpha clothing. Our favorite HP vintage heroes would haven eaten him for breakfast (while dining with a glamorous OW). *sigh*

Ivy has written an excellent spoiler review.

Actually really good

The hero was a jerk I know but actually I ended up really liking this book. Mostly because the heroine was awesome. Same HP storyline where rich jaded playboy sees a woman he wants and takes her but surprise she's a virgin! He is mad but he can't forget her and he plots to have her in his bed. Blackmail, heartache, and a big bear changed the course of this story and I really liked the ending. Clare is fast becoming one of my favorite authors. I read her before she wrote for Harlequin too and liked her then for the most part. Not all her books are safe so I don't read them all but this one is. I am glad I read it!

Only one thing: please writers, when you write Italian words look up on google translators. Some italianish words are creepy. Anyway it was good. The heroine must “sacrifice” herself if she wants the hero to help her cousin. The hero is a handsome sex on legs billionaire. He asks her to spend 15 days in his bed and then she will be free. Aaaaah what a penance! The sacrifice! She accepts, they have wonderful time together and then they part. The heroine is in love with him but he has emotional issues and rejects her. She’s hurt like mad and drags herself around. He goes to Alaska and face a grizzly bear and hopes he will kill him so he can stop hurting. We hope too. Unfortunately not this time. The hero is safe and goes back to the heroine groveling. For just one minute I hoped this was the book where a scary bear killed the stupid narcissist hero. The bear had something more interesting to do. Pity.

Very disappointed by this vacuous romance in which the billionaire hero bribes the aristocratic supermodel heroine into his bed for a two-week fling in exchange for investing in her beloved cousin's hedge fund (a move which has the potential to save her ancestral home from bankruptcy).

The hero can't love because

The heroine isn't just a vapid prettyface because

Neither protagonist stirred my sympathies with their plug-and-play backstories.

Καυτές,προκλητικές και άκρως συγκινητικές!

Είναι αδύνατον να μην ταυτιστείς με τους ήρωες,να μην τους αγαπήσεις,να μην τους πονέσεις!

Loved the good old-fashioned vibe .. the rich H, model h and the offer to be his mistress ... without throwing too many plot twists in, CC delivers a great story ... and there is no denying their chemistry, H's deepening feelings ... I almost felt sorry for him as he tried to make sense of his feelings for her ... one thing I can always count on in most of CC's books ... H can always be counted on to deliver a decent grovel ...

I liked this one much better than ‘Shock Heir for the King’ which I read recently.

Cesare and Jemima have an instant sexual attraction which they act on very fast, and then the rest of the book continues to explore that attraction as they both fall in love and she recognises and acknowledges it and he doesn’t.

Of course his angst is from his upbringing and the way he and his mother were treated and that helps explain his refusal to recognise that he loves her until he has an encounter with a grizzly bear (don’t ask - seriously it makes sense in the book).

Jemima is a seriously excellent heroine and I loved her determination and honesty. Cesare was a bit of a jerk at times but Clare really made him an irresistible hero. Great story - very satisfying.Loved it!

A great story from one of my favourite authors. The HPs of late have not had the good old mistress storyline so this was a nice surprise. The MCs, Cesare and Jemima, had some insane chemistry and the bits of angst thrown in made for a rather good read.

Sex. Lots of sex. Commitment issues. Blah blah blah.

Jemima Woodcraft is an international supermodel from an aristocratic family and a virgin at 25. When she agrees to accompany her cousin Laurence to a business dinner. she meets self-made Italian billionaire Cesare. Their attraction is instant, but Cesare doesn't do relationships. He offers to invest in Laurence's fund if Jemima will be his mistress for two weeks. When the time is over, will he want to let her go?

Jemima is a reasonably likeable H, and the h has a tragic backstory for why he's relationship-challenged, but the transactional nature of their relationship is troubling (even if, for Jemima, it's never just about the money). and there's not a lot of sexual tension, just sex, period. It's not bad, but this theme has been done before, many times, and done better. For me, it was middling.

Cesare is used to getting what he wants and believes he can buy anything. He is only worried about his past and what hurt him previously. Jemima is very much wanting to help her cousin Laurence as they have been through rough times. Cesare believes he can buy Jemima, but finds out after a brief affair that she cannot be bought and he actually has fellings he cannot identify. a nice Happy Ever After.

4 stars. This was really good. I enjoyed reading it and I just flew right through it. I loved the plot and the love and the arguments, especially the arguments. I loved the Jemima stood her ground and was fighting for her feelings for Cesare. I wasn’t a fan of how fast she was in love, but you can only do so much with 200 pages. I really liked it.

Don’t know why I bother with the recent HPs. More sex than story, little plot, cynical characters. This one added blasphemy.
Read about a third plus last couple chapters.

Jemima Woodcraft is what Cesare Durante could only assume out to use her womanly wiles to sweeten the pot in her cousin's business venture. Her history had been published in all the tabloids, and he is in the mood to have the beautiful model at his beck and call. A privileged upbringing was not what Cesare ever had, but he recognized it in Jemima.

Jemima is more than she seems. And a whole lot less than he was lead to believe. A one night stand, that later becomes a two week affair, leads on to so much more. More than either originally thought or wanted.

A nice story.

When Cesare meet Jemima its at a business meeting where she is trying to get him to help her friend Laurence get Cesare to invest in his hedge fund to which will help her family financial crisis. His interest in her is instantaneous and when he wants something he usually gets it. Jemima falls for his charm and finds herself in his arms and in his bed. She has never been with someone he is her first and unfortunately falls for him. He thinks all his money and all he can give her will keep her there. He calls her his little bird but the fact he is cold and distant the little bird has to fly and she does even though the pain of leaving almost destroys her. Ms. Connelly's writing is so fantastic there isn't a book she wrote that isn't a 5 star, I loved this story the depth and I hated to see it end. If you haven't read her yet trust me you will find all her books awesome.
