Transmutation

Rate this book
Exciting sci-fi medical thriller where a dangerous, life-threatening, alien contamination spreads to humans and alters their DNA.

Something inhuman is spreading across Earth. Erica has become infected with an alien being from a recent voyage to a foreign world. She did not fully realize it until she was back on Earth. Now it is too late, and she is transmitting this alien contamination to others. People are being altered by an alien presence, and no one has any control over it. Humanity is beginning to change. What is happening and can it be stopped? Erica must hide the truth and survive attacks on her life as she grapples with many questions, fears, and unknowns. And most important, if humans survive, what will they become? This is a sequel to New Contact and follows that book in time, but both are standalone books. A science fiction thriller novella.

Erica returns from space knowing that she is carrying an alien entity inside of her. Her quandary is who to tell and how to hide her secret? Transmutation is one of those books that is hard to put down, as it captures the reader with it's story line. Lynn Miclea's novel is a delight to read, always posing the question to the reader of 'what if'. A worthy 5 star read and maybe we'll hear more from Erica in the future.

Loved this story

This story kept me on the edge of my seat, sometimes literally. This sequel to New Contact follows one of the secondary characters from that story, which set the stage for this book perfectly. I highly recommend reading the first book before reading this one, though this story could be read standalone if one must.

A few lapses in judgment in the beginning quickly escalates into a situation requiring more and more questionable decisions on the part of the main character. I kept wondering how I would have handled matters if it had been me, and I'm not sure. The world of the story is more advanced than ours, technologically, and one might expect people from such an advanced society to be trained to deal with certain situations better than the main character did. So we as readers must accept certain premises to truly enjoy this book. But I gladly went with them, and loved the journey on which the story took me. And it's not too difficult to imagine that if the main character had made a different decision in the beginning, things might have gone very badly for her. Certainly we'd be reading a totally different story, and not the one the author wanted to tell.

While the story had a satisfying ending, I did have one burning question still unanswered. I'd like to see a continuation of the series, with the hope of having that question answered.

Were there a few things I could harp on? A few. But nothing major. I look forward to reading more of this series... hint, hint, to the author.

An OK Sequel - With the Same Flaws as Part 1

Like the first book in this series, this is a decent effort. While the vision of a utopian future is laid out in some detail, the author focuses on the evolution of the human species, but pays short shrift to the complications of societal evolution. The "bad" people die off and suddenly everything is peaceful? The characters are once again underdeveloped, despite there being so much potential. The spaceship Captain from Part 1 is reintroduced to us, but why? That thread is a dead end and seemingly orthogonal to the plotline the author is choosing to pursue. In the Epilogue, the author jumps us 5 years into the future, where everything is perfect. Teleportation has apparently supplanted all other forms of transportation, along with the associated environmental benefits. But again there's no exploration of the societal upheaval this would cause, not to mention the drastic and apparently overnight impacts to infrastructure and commerce.

All that said, I find that the author has a compelling voice, even though they seem rushed at the end to bring this story to a conclusion after a somewhat repetitive middle. The basic story outlined in Parts 1 & 2 has so much potential for further development. It's worthy of a full-length novel, and not just a pair of short stories.

Transmutation is the second in a two book series by Lynn Miclea. Although it doesn’t always address them directly, it answers most of the question from New Contact, the first book of the series. Apparently Lynn Miclea has more faith in our species, and any aliens we might encounter, than I do, because, for my taste, Transmutation was a little too idealistic. That said, it was her world she was creating, not mine, and viewed from that standpoint, Lynn Miclea’s Transmutation was excellent, even if you are as cynical as I am. Although Transmutation can stand alone, I would strongly recommend reading New Contact first. The background given there will make Transmutation more enjoyable.

After reading the first book, "First Contact" i had to go on with the next in line. What would happen to humanity?
A wonderful view of what humans could become, or were they meant to be like that? Peaceful and loving and with no wars? instead of aggressive, striding for power?
But would humanity submit willingly to the peaceful changes?
One make one think about it.
I love the thinking of the author. In my line as well. A great read. Get it and find out.

What a concept. What if an alien altered our planet but it went the other way? If only mankind would change, for better, on their own.
