The Earl of Buckleigh was once an untitled misfit, tormented at Oxford. Now, he’s overcome his challenges and is eager for the future, especially when his oldest and dearest friend, Bianca, needs help to save the annual holiday party. Ash has a plan to rescue the event, but when the bullies from his youth are up to their old tricks, he must risk everything to put the past behind him and find true love.
Furious when her brother refuses to host the St. Stephen’s Day party, Lady Bianca Stafford is committed to giving the villagers their celebration. In Ash, she sees salvation for their local tradition, and perhaps a future she never expected. But her brother has other plans for her—a Season and marriage, and not to Ash. When disaster strikes, everything she cares about is threatened and it will take a miracle—or a hero—to save the day.
The Red Hot Earl is inspired by the song and story, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.

A quick, enjoyable and quirky read. In my opinion, a perfect read when you're travelling or just trying to pass the time. Something light to make you smile. Don't expect deep emotions or conflicts in this, as everything moves as break neck speed and issues are resolved by mostly just yelling at people.
Ash is the newly minted Earl of Buckleigh and has finally come into his own after years of torment at Oxford. Post which he cemented himself as a famous puglist in London, which helped him get over his afflictions - author's words not mine - and become more confident. Confident enough to face the abusers of his youth as a house party. Here he meets Bianca, the sister of a Duke, and his childhood friend. Bianca instantly warms up to him, remembering their time as children but also noticing that he's no longer a scrawny little boy. He's a man now - basically cue sexual tension.
All of their bloosoming romance happens with the background of setting up the Stephen's Day party - which I frankly gave two jots about. Gimme more romance! Overall, Bianca was slightly an irritating character at some points but I loved her loyalty and love for Ash. Ash on the other hand, I truly liked. He took the torment of his past and made himself a better man but didn't turn into an emo whiner. Unlike Bianca's brother - who I'm sure has some deep seeded angst in his past *eye roll*. We'll read about that in his book I'm sure.
Bianca and Ash fall in love instantly, like Cupid struck them with an extra dose of insta-love/lust. I'm okay with it, because like I said before this is a quick read and has a light feel to it from the start. Expecting a slow burn is non-sensical. I would have liked an epilogue to show their life post marraige for sure, and maybe a little more passion to their courtship and/or marraige. That would have definitely pushed this to 4 star.
Two things I wish were better: Ash is shown to have an ailment of sorts; where he twiches, blurts out expletives without meaning to. And somehow he's controlled his by becoming a boxer, so I'd have liked a little more into this affliction of his.
And second, I have absolutely no idea why in the world the title is Red Hot Earl. And if it has to do with the fact that Ash has red hair then... no. Just no.
The cover has his hair more brown than red so what gives?!
I received a free copy of the book in exchange for a review from Netgalley and the author.
This is the first in a planned trilogy of Holiday novellas by Darcy Burke. The second and third installments are set to be published in October and November 2019. This is a Regency romance set in the English countryside. It is a loose retelling of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and is utterly delightful in its light and cheery tone.
It was a pleasant break from some of the heavier books I’ve been reading lately. The heroine, Bianca and her childhood friend, Ash meet again at a local house party. Ash has been tormented by the house party host and his friends since childhood. Ash suffers from what appears to be Tourette’s syndrome, and that made him a target for taunting and pranks. When the behavior continues at the house party, Bianca is appalled and tries to help Ash. The story takes off from there.
Bianca and Ash are likeable and believable characters. I enjoyed getting to know them better. I don’t know how accurate the story is as far as what women were allowed to do in the 1800’s, but Bianca’s actions up the romance nicely. Sometimes all you want is to read a fun romance. I rarely give out 5 stars for a romance. They just don’t shake my world to that extent. So a 3.5 rating from me indicates a book worthy of spending time reading when you have a romantic itch to scratch. I am looking forward to seeking out the next two books in the series upon their publication.

If you're looking for low-angst childhood-friends-to-lovers snowed in together right before Christmas, this is the novella for you.
Q: Did we decide to read this Christmas novella solely because it is a Regency romance based on the 1939 Christmas carol Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer? A: Yes, yes we did.
Q: What did we think of it? A: Look, if the above description interests you, we think this is about as good as it gets! Ash (obviously the hottest HistRom hero name) has unexpectedly inherited his cousin's title. Unfortunately he's got to deal with all of his childhood bullies. Cause listen up, Ash may be a hot red-headed barrister-cum-boxer-cum-earl, but he also has Tourette syndrome. We love an unconventional hero, and we definitely get one in Ash. 22-word summaries: Laine: 🎵Ruddy the misfit earl/ is misunderstood by all./ His Tourette and shitty cousin/ caused him to punch in faces.🎵 [Bee digs it.] Meg:🎵 All of the other noblemen/ used to laugh and call him names./ They never let poor Buckleigh/ join in any noble games!🎵
Series: Love Is All Around #1 Publication Date: 9/24/19 Number of Pages: 133
This was a lovely introduction to the Love Is All Around series. The series is set around three siblings and the local Christmas celebrations. The book didn’t feel too Christmasy, but I believe that is because it took place earlier than the other books – thus the lack of Christmas feel. Maybe we’ll get some decorations in the upcoming books.
This book features Lady Bianca Stafford and Ashton Rutledge, Earl of Buckleigh. Bianca is free-spirited, bright, fun, and she absolutely adores Christmas – particularly the St. Stephen’s Day celebration. Her family has hosted that celebration since the very first Duke – and now, her brother is ending it. He won’t budge and absolutely refuses to have any part in or sponsorship of the celebration. Bianca doesn’t know what to make of her brother, Calder, eighth Duke of Hartwell. He’s certainly not the brother who left them ten years ago and didn’t return until their father died. Now, he’s cold, unfeeling, uncaring, and cruel.
Ash has been persecuted most of his life – especially by three men who are now certainly old enough to know better and now pull the same childish tricks and torments they did while they were at school. The persecution is because of an affliction (sounds like Tourette’s Syndrome). He’s spent years in London figuring out techniques to deal to help alleviate the worst of the symptoms, but when he is stressed they manifest themselves.
Ash and Bianca were childhood friends and each was delighted to see the other at a house party at the home of Lord Thornaby. As they spend time together Bianca admires Ash more and more and it is the same for him. When events occurred and Ash left the party early – and Bianca left shortly after – Bianca knew she had to see him to tell him that she supported him.
It was fun to watch Bianca and Ash get their HEA and it was also good to meet the ‘stars’ of the upcoming books. I have to say, I’m not sure what the author can do to redeem Calder in my eyes. Yes, I understand what his issue is and why he intends to do away with the celebration – but – what I don’t understand is how he can treat his sister so coldly and cruelly – without a blink of remorse and caring.
I also didn’t understand the three villains. These were three men who were in their mid-to-late twenties -- certainly old enough to know better than to act like immature schoolboys.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Short and sweet Christmas-themed novella by reliable author Darcy Burke. Her stories are always just nice and lovely, and this childhood friends-to-lovers story is no exception.
Bianca and Ash meet again after years spent apart (they were friends before he left for school, growing up in the same village), and quickly realize there's more to their friendship. Their relationship progressed really really quickly, they just met, clicked, and moved straight to the bedroom and then the altar. There was little in their way except some forced drama (and boy did her change of mind from "I am never getting married!!!!" to "I can't live without him" come out of nowhere for me), but ultimately it was a sweet story for me.
Bianca did annoy me a bit, though. She was so stubborn and just walk right over people to get her way (which might optimistically be described as "spirited" and "knows what she wants", but still annoyed me sometimes), and I only liked her when she was around Ash, for whom she would stand up and take on bullies without a second thought. Then it was still weird, but at least in an endearing way.
I did really like Ash. He was sweet, even when his childhood tormentors showed up to create some drama, but I would have liked to know more about his mysterious illness (which manifests with twitches and blurting out expletives, and is somehow manageable by boxing?).
All in all, a nice start to a Christmas-themed series!

I have enjoyed every Darcy Burke story I've read, but this was my favorite. Sometimes I just want to read a feel-good story. This had the right balance of forgiveness, fun, and sexy. Plus, Christmas time! I definitely would like to complete the novella trilogy.

A fast moving, sweet (as always) regency romance with less drama than your usual regency romances. There are no blackmails or kidnapping, the story focusing more on the couple than any other mystery. The characters were like-able and I really want to see what happened to the brother to be uptight. As I already have the book about Poppy I can read it soon. I am looking forward to it as Poppy is already married to how the story actually goes.
Pleasant historical romance set around Christmas time with a strong female lead character. The main male character had a Tourette's like medical condition that was handled realistically. There was a redemptive quality to the conclusion. Secondary characters were not well developed, but the story wasn't long and it is a series.

My review
When an Earl who had been a bullied boy meets again his still outspoken childhood friend...
What a lovely tale it was, I loved the positive message it gives. My daughter was at a time bullied too by a group of girls whom disparaged her for her physical look, her choice of clothing and and, the head of this group is what I think a girl uncomfortable in her own skin so she used my daughter as an emotional outlet. It is in the past but I do know the scars it left. Ash was even worse abused, as it was for years and no one put a stop for him, only distance halted the harassment. My heart ached so much for him, I do suppose he suffers from The Gilles De La Tourette’s syndrome. With time he learned to control his reaction and pugilism helped him to channel his anger and other feelings. But still, he feels out of place and his new designation as a titled peer does not lessen his unease among society. Bianca is his opposite, she is no shy miss and speaks her mind. She is one, no bully would choose as a victim as she lets no one cornering her. But when she witnesses how Ash’s old school chums belittle him at every opportunity, she stands by his side. I loved how complementary they were, and respectful of one another’s feelings.
This lively read brings all the right sentiments, to refuse to stay mute or quiet when others are abused, but also in oneself to forgive the offenses. 4.5 stars
I was granted by the author an advance copy but also preordered mine. Here is my true and unbiased opinion.
The Red Hot Earl features a delightful romance between childhood friends set during the holiday season.
Ashton Rutledge, the newly titled Earl of Buckleigh, has overcome the challenges of his youth and is looking forward to the future. When he runs into childhood friend Lady Bianca Stafford, Ash is eager to assist when she needs help saving the village's annual holiday party. As Ash and Bianca spend time together planning the party, they find themselves drawn to each other and the possibility of a future they never imagined. But when disaster strikes, their newfound romance will be put to the test and it will take a holiday miracle to set things right.
I loved Bianca and Ash together from their first scene together. Bianca is someone who speaks her mind and goes after what she wants regardless of the consequences. Ash admires Bianca for her confidence and I was happy to see that he loved what society deemed unacceptable about her. Ash is incredibly self-conscious due to a disability he developed as a small child and I felt terrible for him when he was mocked by his previous childhood tormentors. I loved how Bianca stood up for him though and how she was willing to battle anyone who was rude to him. Bianca and Ash's relationship is easy from the get-go, built upon years of childhood friendship. When the relationship develops into something more, it's wonderfully done and I found their physical chemistry to be fantastic.
Overall The Red Hot Earl was an amazing read and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series, The Gift of the Marquess, when it releases next month.
**I received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**
I adored Ash , what a beautiful soul, and Bianca is everything that’s pure and light .
Inspiring characters brought to life , this has got be be another perfect series in the making. Starting with this Friends to lovers romance.
Ash has suffered Ticks and unwanted body movements since being a child . At school he was teased unmercifully by other students. Now he just wants a quiet life , but being the Earl has to put himself on show. Pugilism has been his godsend, and now so is Bianca , she’s everything he’s always needed , his childhood friend.
Bianca is struggling to understand her brother who is moody and gruff , not getting her way with him organising a fair on the property for Christmas is driving her mad . Attending a house party with her sister she meets her old friend Ash , and rekindles that Affection for him .
This is beautifully done, the two seem to gel so well . I love the storyline and what you can see are some great characters that may be looking for their own story’s to be written.
I received an Arc copy of this book and chose to post this review
The subject of constant ridicule during his time in Oxford for things out of his control, Ash has worked hard in order to graduate early and distance himself from his tormentors. Since leaving Oxford he has trained himself both body and mind in pugilism, becoming stronger and gaining better control over the verbal and physical ticks stemming from his disease.
Now that he is an earl and working to live up to the expectations of his title, he determines he should accept the invitation to a houseparty at Thornhill, the estate of one of his childhood tormentors. Having expected these men to have matured and changed over the interveening years, they quickly prove otherwise and seeing no reason to stay longer, he returns home.
The bright spot of his visit was in seeing his childhood friend, Bianca, again. Discovering he has left the party, she later pays him a visit at his own home and together they plan the St. Stephen's Day party after her brother refuses to host it. Seeing one another again, attraction blossoms and the chance at a future together grows. When bullies and disaster strike at once nearly destroying their plans, it will take a hero to set things to rights. ___________________________
The Red Hot Earl is the first book in Darcy Burke's Love is All Around trilogy. I came across the third book in the series, Joy to the Earl, first when I found it on NetGalley and after reading it and enjoying I decided to go back and grab a copy of the prior two books in the series. And in saying that I must add that I enjoyed this book more.
Each book in this series is a retelling of a beloved holiday story and this one is a reimagining of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Ash, as with Rudolph's nose, has some physcial trait that sets him apart from his peers and due to their immaturity, is relentlessly belittled and harrassed by them. The taunting and cruelty doesn't cease until a disaster befalls them and only Ash is able to save the day.
My heart really went out to Ash, that he had to endure so much bullying as a young man. That those same boys would be so immature so many years later, that they would disrespect him like that and treat him poorly. People can be so cruel.
Bianca and Ash seemed such opposites at times. Their connection stemming from their childhood, I was simply charmed by them. Ash possessed so much forgiveness, which I respected in him. I probably would have been able to forgive and let the past go, but not to the extent of willingly continuing to have those people in my life. That really impresssed me on his part.
I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the trilogy, The Gift of the Marquess, and learning more about Poppy.
I would recommend this series to those looking for some sweet historical stories this holiday season.
The Red Hot Earl is the first book in the Love is All Around series by Darcy Burke This particular story is unique because it is a romance based on the festive song/story about Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer.
I wasn't sure how the author could write a book based on Rudolph's story, but she managed it beautifully and I enjoyed the story immensely.
Our Rudolph is Ash Rutledge, Earl of Buckleigh. His childhood wasn't a happy one, he was bullied terribly thanks to having what in this day would be known as Tourette's Syndrome. Since his school days, he has worked hard to control his 'tics' and to make the most of his life. Despite that, he isn't at all pleased to find himself to find him back amongst the very men who made his life a misery.
Lady Bianca Stafford adores Christmas and has always loved the huge St Stephen's day party/celebrations that her family have always hosted for the family and villagers. This year her brother Calder, eighth Duke of Hartwell is to be the host but for some reason, he refuses point blank to do it. He gives no good reason no matter how much Bianca begs him.
Lord Thornaby is holding a house party which Bianca attends with the hope of convincing him to host the St Stephen's day celebrations. She doesn't expect to see Ash there but is thrilled when she does. They spent many of their childhood years together and were the best of friends. He has changed nearly beyond recognition and although, he has grown into a very well built, very handsome man, he is still her 'Ash'. During the party she notices how horribly his so-called friends treat him, he even ends up leaving the party early. Bianca realises that there is no way she wants anything to do with them, and there is no way she will ask Thornaby to hold the St Stephen's celebrations. She too leaves the party early.
She decides she can't give up on the St Stephen's celebrations and with that in mind makes her way to Ash's home to see if he would be agreeable to being the host. That isn't the only reason though, she finds herself attracted to him, and also very upset at the way his friends treated him. She needs to see him, make sure he is alright.
I won't say anything else about the story because it's the exciting climax, the romance, the bully's comeuppance, the happy ever after. Suffice to say that it was a true pleasure to read and left me with a happy smile on my face. I love happy endings so much and darling Ash absolutely deserved one.
This was a lovely quick read but still managed to be believable despite being based on a Christmas carol! I look forward to the next book in the series which I believe is Calder's story. I wonder what happened to him to make him so cold and unforgiving?
Lady Bianca Stafford is committed to giving the villagers their St. Stephen’s Day celebration, but her brother refuses to host the party, and so she needs someone to help her make it happen. When she reencounters her childhood friend Ash at an acquaintance house party, she asks him to help her with the festivities, and as they spend time together to work on it, began to fall in love. This was so sweet, the way Bianca defended Ash to the people who treated him badly because of his affliction was beautiful as was how they accepted and loved each other completely for who they were. Amazing book!! I can't wait to hear Bianca's siblings stories. I received an arc copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an review.
Ashton Rutledge spent his time as a young man suffering at the hands of bullies at Oxford. He was quirky and prone to verbal outbursts and physical ticks that made him the target of many a prank. When he left school, he took up pugilism and became bigger and stronger and learned to better control his disease. Now he's the Earl of Buckleigh and eager for a fresh start. Unfortunately, his old tormentors haven't changed a bit. Even though his old friend Bianca could use their help organizing the county's Christmas party, Ash can't bring himself to be around them, though he vows to do what he can to help Bianca himself.
Lady Bianca Stafford is livid when her odious brother refuses to host the annual St. Stephen's Day Party, the first one since their father's death. She finds no help from the idiotic local gentlemen, except for the one beacon of hope that is her old friend Ash. Bianca never planned to marry, despite her brother's desire for her to marry and have a London season, but the more time she spends with Ash, the more she begins to rethink everything she thought she wanted for herself.
I loved this merry little novella. Ash was fabulous as a hero and Bianca was lovely for seeing him for himself and not his disease. I definitely couldn't forgive as quickly as Ash did but those elements of forgiveness and focusing on what really matters make this a perfect feel good Christmas read. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Red Hot Earl is the first book in the Love is All Around series by Darcy Burke. The story is mostly stand-alone, but there some things we read about that are going to be explained in the next two books. They are not anything huge, but the author thought she should tell us that we are going to get answers in the upcoming books, so I thought that it should also be mentioned here. The novella can be read as stand-alone and you don't have to worry about having to read the other books.
Due to the length of the book everything is bound to happen faster than it does in a full-length novel, but that doesn't lessen the enjoyment I got from this book. I was expecting a faster pace. What I would have liked to see is an explanation of what makes Ash have the problems that gave an excuse to the other men to bully him. An explanation would have been nice.
Usually, I am not a fan of heroines who act like they are born in the 21rst century while reading an HR, but for some reason, Bianca's character worked perfectly IMO. She is very opinionated, but she defended Ash with all her might and she proved that she is a good heroine and I was justified to like her.
I enjoyed the book a lot and I am looking forward to reading the other two books in the series. The author did a very good job of setting up her world and I would recommend the book.
I have enjoyed several of Darcy’s books and I’m in the Christmas-y mood, so I was pretty excited to read this one.
I really liked Bianca and Ash. She knows what she wants and is determined to go after it. Ash is sweet and smitten. I loved how they were childhood friends and reading them come into feelings. As for Bianca’s siblings, I’m not sure about either of them.
Plot wise, it was quick. I didn’t realize it was a novella, so I wasn’t prepared for it to move as fast as it did. The thread with the childhood “friends” was interesting and really, someone should have gotten junk punched.
Overall, it was a fun read. I will likely read the following stories because I’m curious about the way the siblings acted.
**Huge thanks to Darcy Burke for providing the arc free of charge**
This was a super steamy infuriating short read. I loved everything about Ash and Bianca. I think Darcey did a great job with Ash’s impediment. It reminded me of Asperger’s. Ash’s deceased cousin’s friends are freaking idiots who needed their azz kicked in college and especially now. What they did to Ash then and now is abhorrent and cruel.
Ash is level headed, but can be fiery, knows what he wants and is a beast in the sheets. Did I mention his red hair? Bianca is fiery, determined and a harlot. She’s relentless with her seductive behavior.
I can’t wait to discover what’s up with her sister Poppy’s marriage and what is causing her brother Calder to act like a cold jackass.
I received an ARC of this book from Darcy Burke Publishing via Netgalley
I love Darcy Burke’s books. Every single one is filled with emotion, humor, and flawed, real characters. And there’s even more to love about The Red Hot Earl. It’s the start of her new Love Is All Around series which, if this first book is any indication, promises to be fabulous. It’s a holiday romance. Tis the season for love and what better way to get in the mood than a beautiful love story wrapped up in a holiday bow. There’s just something special about romances in a winter setting. And what better time than the Christmas season. A season of love, family, and happily ever afters. Ash and Bianca were such absolutely loveable characters who were perfect for one another and so deserving of love. I adored Bianca’s enthusiasm and confidence. She didn’t hide her emotions and said what she thought. She had such a kind heart and that desire to help others and ensure the village had their traditional holiday celebration was instrumental in bringing Ash and her together. Ash was such an admirable man. He’d been tormented and excluded since childhood for his Tourette’s, but rose above that. He’d worked hard at learning to control, cope, and survive with his disability. In spite of all he’d suffered, he still was kind to others and willing to put the past behind him. I loved the memories of Ash and Bianca’s childhood together. And I especially loved seeing that friendship become something more. They valued, accepted, and cherished each other. Though their reunion and romance takes place over a matter of days, this novella reads like a complete and satisfying historical romance. Red Hot Earl is an un-put-downable, sensitive, and beautiful romance with the perfect combination of heart and heat. I can’t wait for the rest of this series. I’m anxious to know more about Bianca’s siblings and hopeful I’ll see more of Bianca and Ash in future books.
Ashton Rutledge recently inherited the title of The Earl of Buckleigh when his cousin died, Ash had been tormented at Oxford for an affliction he'd no control over. Now, he’s overcome his challenges and is eager for the future, especially when his oldest and dearest friend, Bianca, needs help to save the annual St Stephen’s day party. Furious when her brother refuses to host the St. Stephen’s Day party, Lady Bianca Stafford is committed to giving the villagers their celebration. In Ash, she sees salvation for their local tradition, and perhaps a future she never expected. Ash & Bee had been friends in their youth & when they meet again at Lord Thornaby’s house party the old friendship is renewed. This is the first in a trilogy of books about the Stafford siblings taking place around Christmas time. I loved Ash who had struggled to overcome his affliction & had studied the law & also found boxing to help control his twitches he now finds that he’s an Earl. Bee is feisty, outspoken & endearing together they compliment each other. I found the three bullies to be extremely childish & wanted to give them a shake & tell them to grow up but maybe events achieved this. I thoroughly disliked Chill & eagerly await to see how or if he can be redeemed. I read this page turning book in a sitting & loved every page of it even though it was 2am by the time I'd finished it My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
It suffers from a fairly extreme case of novella-itis. Everything is ridiculously fast (they fall in love in about two days, and while they were close as children, they haven't seen each other in a decade, so NOPE). Everything is ridiculous extreme (everyone is fairly hateful, except for the main couple, his mother, and her sister). Seriously, the brother is essentially just horrible to be horrible. I gather from the synopsis of the third book that his father prevented him from marrying the woman he loved, so he's responding by essentially killing all his family/community traditions and being needlessly spiteful to his younger sister. Which is, umm... yeah, a super reasonable response. But seriously for such a slight story, this had too many absolutely horrible people in it. (Don't even get me started on apparently all other men in the neighbourhood that are not the hero). I mean, I'll give minor props for showcasing a character with Tourette's and then hinting at . Unfortunately, this story didn't have enough depth to really showcase that, given everyone was either a cardboard cutout of a hero or a villain.
Or at least they were right up until (almost) everybody got redeemed at Christmas. And I can only assume the horrible brother gets redeemed in his own book.
Love can be found close at hand when you least expect it. When it is built on friendship and blossoms into a true regard, it is lovely and Darcy Burke has written one such story in the first of a series. Ash, the now Earl of Buckleigh has overcome so much in his life. Or at least it seemed learned to manage his disease, that is, until he was around some old schoolmates who had bullied him during his days at Oxford. My heart went out to him because he truly yearned for acceptance just as he was and one day find love and have a family. Lady Bianca Stafford is a determined young lady. After nursing her sick father for two years, he older brother finally comes home to take over his father's place. He refuses to host the annual holiday celebration for all the villagers and tenants. She is set on making it happen though one way or another. When she see's Ash again after so many years, she is delighted! They use to be friends when young and he had grown into such a strong handsome man. But she also sees his struggles that she had not seen before and becomes his biggest supporter. Romance is alive and you can find it is this story of two souls meant for each other if they will let their hearts be true.. Adored this book and cannot wait for more!
Isn’t it amazing how people make fun of people who are different? This was the case for Ash, now Earl of Buckleigh and he had suffered from bullies throughout his time at Oxford. Lady Bianca was full of energy and very outspoken and determined not to marry. Ten years had passed since Oxford and Ash had changed considerably, the bullies remained the same. Ash and Bianca find themselves siding with each other against them. This was an interesting tale of how circumstances and events can change people’s opinions. I am curious to find out why Bianca’s brother has changed into such a grumpy curmudgeon! Also there is a mystery concerning her sister Poppy and what she is concerned about. All to be revealed in future books. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I do so detest bullies and my heart went out to Ash at the bullying he had to endure while in school. Now, 10 years later, he's back and although his affliction is still there, he's learned to mostly master it and is not the weak boy he once was. He's changed but the bullies are still around and even as adults they can't help but pick on Ash. I just loved his character and how he proved to be the better man.
I also adored Bianca's character, such a feisty and pure heart she has! She is so perfect for Ash and I love how she defended him to the bullies:) Theirs is truly a beautiful love story!!
I was given an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.
The relationship between the two main characters is well done and believable, the few steamy moments a natural flow from the story. Unfortunately, the end was just too 'all is well that ends well'.
Heroine: Bianca Stafford, 22. Nickname: Bee. Sister of the Duke of Hartwell.
Hero: Ashton Rutledge, age unknown. Nickname: Ash. Earl of Buckleigh.
Date: 1811
How they meet: Ash and Bianca met off-page as children living on neighboring estates.
What happens: Bianca attends a house party with her sister, where she is reunited with Ash after many years. She is disgusted with the behavior of the host and his friends towards Ash. They mock his abilities at every turn. Ash is prone to uncontrollable physical movements and uncensored outbursts.
Trigger Warnings:
Verdict: The hero of this story has Tourette syndrome, which led to a lifetime of bullying. The heroine remains loyal to him as his childhood friend. I felt like the hero’s perspective on this story was handled pretty well, but I didn’t like the heroine as much because her character development felt superficial. The pacing of the romance went from slow burn to warp speed, with the first intimate scene coming out of nowhere. Also, I’m not sure how I feel about the tragedy near the end of the story. I guess it was to be a lesson in forgiveness, but with this being a short story there really wasn’t time to do everything justice. Overall, the story felt a little too modern and the emotional aspects weren’t explored enough given the challenges the two faced.
Steam level: steamy (but relatively brief scenes) and explicit
I didn't realize going in, that it was a Christmas novella short-story. So once I realized that, the pace at which the story seemed to be happening made since and I was ok with it. At first, I was thinking everything was a bit too much this or too much that, but as the story flowed, everything all worked well together. By the way, this is a retake of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer :)
The heroine was a bit modern in her thinking, especially regarding marriage, calling a male friend by his first name, visiting male friends houses without permission. But it wasn't TOO feminist, it was just right. She wanted something, she went after it, and she wasn't a bitch about it.
The hero had Tourettes. At least I am pretty sure that's what it was (I saw another reviewer guess Aspergers...) I liked that he didn't back down from his old school friends, but was not a raging alpha jerk about it either. His old school pals were absolute jerks, I'm surprised no one called them out for their behaviour actually.
The heroine's cold brother... I look forward to reading that story :)
Darcy Burke has given us a wonderful new book & series to start us in to the holiday season with a bang. This was a quick moving story that you could just sit back & enjoy with any drama being solved in a few pages rather than chapters.
Our hero, Ashton Rutledge, Earl of Buckleigh has been tormented by three men due to an affliction that caused him to experience tics & vocal outbursts. They began teasing & pulling pranks on Ash when he was a young boy & continued through his years they all attended Oxford. Ash then left school & went to London for 10 years to learn ways to control his body & gain strength by training & becoming part time pugilist. He has now returned to his country estate & is no longer the skinny, nervous boy; he has grown strong & has managed basic control of his disease. Upon reuniting with Ash at a house party, the three men immediately start the cutting remarks & immature pranks.
Lady Bianca Stafford is a fun-loving, vivacious & forthright lady who loves the Christmas Season & particularly the St. Stephen's Day celebration that her family has provided for the town's people, neighbors & tenants since the time of the first duke. That is, until this year, her brother Calder, is now the Eighth Duke of Hartwell, due to the death of their father, & he will not be hosting the celebration - she will not let this go & will not disappoint all the people who look forward to it every year.
Ash & Bianca grew up in the same area & were friends when they were young. What a surprise to meet again at a house party & they spend time reminiscing about the past & learning new things about one another.
The romance is such fun - with some bad men, an awful brother, great sister, Ash's wonderful Mother & a little bit of bedroom spice thrown in to warm things up. I highly recommend this book & I can't wait to see what happens in the two upcoming books.
I was gifted the Advanced Reader Copy of this book & all opinions are my own & have been voluntarily given.
The Red Hot Earl introduces readers to the world of the Love is All Around holiday novellas with Bee and Ash's story. It's loosely based on the story of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (honestly, I hesitated whether to mention that, since I was overly distracted at the start trying to figure out how) but is mostly a childhood friends-to-lovers story between two people who aren't overly fond of society but are terribly fond of each other.
There aren't any huge revelations here (other than bullies often have their own personal issues that cause them to lash out, and some of them manage to eventually grow up) but it is a sweet, optimistic story about two likable characters who deserve their HEA.
At this point, though, I'm mostly interested in seeing how Ms. Burke is going to make Bee's brother into a sympathetic character for book 3--he's not leaving us with a good impression here, that's for sure!
Rating: 3 1/2 stars / B-
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
Lady Bianca “Bee” Stafford is stubborn, outspoken and doesn’t want to get married. At the moment, she is really only interested in throwing the traditional St. Stephens Day party for the village. Her brother, the newly appointed Duke of Hartwell, is being moody and mean and will not hold the celebration.
Ashton “Ash” Rutledge, the new Earl of Buckleigh, because of his cousin’s death. The same cousin along with his other titled friends who bullied him at Oxford for his spindly looks, twitching, and outbursts. After Oxford, Ash spent his time in London as a lawyer and pugilist where he learned to manage his afflictions.
Ash and Bee meet up again at a house party. They were childhood friends and easily pick up their relationship where it left off. At the party, once again he is picked on for his afflictions and she is told what she can and can’t do because she is female. They both end up standing up for one another and agreeing that they would plan the St. Stephens Day event on their own.
This is a fairly quick read that has compassionate main characters and is a great way to start a series! I am looking forward to the other books in this series. I was given an ARC of this book and chose to post a review.
