I really don't like leaving bad reviews, but in this case, I couldn't hold myself back :( The book starts with a description of a "typically" dreary winter in the modern-time Moscow, "a city of millions" who are now "mostly huddled around fireplaces"... Fireplaces?! Really?! No central heating? Was it so hard to fact-check at least the very beginning of the book? After that, I continued reading only because I seem to have a morbid fascination with books set in Russia written by people who clearly don't know anything about it and don't even bother to make the setting believable. This mistake in the first page can be easily corrected... but the rest isn't much better, I'm afraid.

What you'll find in this novel if you have some time to waste: the Russian president threatening to bomb US and killing an innocent man in front of others without any consequences because he's a "pro-communist fascist" (does the author even realize it's an oxymoron?), people constantly drinking lots of vodka, sometimes while cleaning their rifles (because how can they not, they are Russians, right?!), a crazy Spetsnaz agent with a scarred face called Demeteri (spoiler: there isn't such a name in Russian, why not google it?), ANOTHER Russian sniper with a scarred face (but don't mix them up), and an American agent sent to Russia, though he doesn't really speak or read Russian - yeah, an excellent choice! I'm sure the author had best intentions of portraying his villains scary and his hero as an expert, but all of them, regrettably, look as "plausible" as the setting :(

Strike Point was my introduction to the action-packed world of espionage created by John Etterlee. The narrative is well-written and engaging for readers to invest themselves in. The action is plentiful with realistic shootouts, that feel cinematic in nature. The action sequences are augmented by the accurate details of weapon systems, adding to the authentic and grounded vibe of the book. The high stakes in the thriller involving the horror of a full blown nuclear war with Russia create a pressing race-against-time vibe that few books can pull off aptly. The joint venture between an American Ranger and SAS members created an amazing team-up of highly competent and lethal operatives.

While I enjoyed the characters, I felt their dialogues can be improved in terms of compartmentalizing between their inner monologues and spoken words. I felt some dialogues would feel more natural as inner monologues than spoken words.

All in all, Strike Point is an action packed ride with non-stop action throughout, and a fast pace that is suited to the pressing events in the book.

What did Sylvia tell him?

I did not receive any type of compensation for reading & reviewing this book. While I receive free books from publishers & authors, I am under no obligation to write a positive review. Only an honest one.

An awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very professionally written international spy thriller book. It was extremely easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a large set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great international spy thriller movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a quite easy rating of 5 stars.

I received my complimentary copy via VRO for an honest review. I always enjoy stories of lone secret ops agents, and this book did not disappoint. The book is fast paced and you never know who is a friend or foe to bring done the maniacal Russian President, circumventing a potential nuclear war. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys political thrillers.
A note to the author - although you did an exceptional job with this book, the editing needs more polishing for punctuation, capitalization, and grammatical errors,

Fast paced novel with an exhuberant storyline. Hard to catch your breath as the group of good guys take on the bad guys with gusto at every turn. Starting with one mission, Roger, a retired Army Ranger turned family man, rancher and lawyer, is called back into the service of his country. Mission creep commences and Roger is joined by a cadre of SAS troups and Delta Forces. Assassinations and bombs, safe houses and ambushes project the story forward. A most enjoyable read. Some adult language.

Very good thriller in same genre of Clive Cussler, Robert Ludlum and Tom Clancy. Could tell that The author was a veteran due to the dialect in the book however this wasn’t overwhelming or too technical. Provided the right context for the story. Fast paced and hopefully not too realistic but probably plausible. 😱

I really enjoyed this book. The craziness of what people can do is just crazy. I know it’s fiction but I completely think things like this can happen. The writer captured his story amazingly. I haven’t read the first book but I didn’t need to. The story was fast paced and easy to follow even with different POV’s. Would recommend to those that like thrillers books!

Make no mistake. This is an action book almost from the first word to the last. There is various locations encountered, and a cast of thousands, literally. But dont worry, you wont have to keep track of them for too long.

In most books of this type, the threat is neutralized before any damage is done. I find that to be totally unrealistic. And dont you just love to see the bad guys get their just reward?

Riveting!

This is not simply a spy thriller but a human story as well! Keeping the reader invested in it knowing good has to triumph evil.
It is believable and compelling with every page. Right up there with Tom Clancy!

I really enjoyed this book, you could see how the main character Roger was enjoying his time on the ranch, to having to go and fight for his country. The dedication to his job was amazing to see, in order to protect America. He is a truly amazing character, you really learn the kinship between the men he has to work with.

"Strike Point" by John Etterlee is an action adventure story that, quite honestly, fails to deliver. Let's start with the story line. Roger O`Neil is an ex-Army Ranger who is called upon by the CIA to rescue a US citizen from the Russians. That, as it turns out, is really kind of a secondary mission. The Russian President is an egomaniacal, American hating dictator bent on returning the Soviet Union to its Cold War glory. Can you say cliche? Roger is joined by a team of SAS whose dialog sounds more Australian than Brit. Yes, there is a difference! Without going into detail, the rescue of the US citizen is ridiculous at best, far fetched and totally unrealistic. At one point, they have gained an asset in the form of a former Soviet nuclear scientist. They have turned him over to the CIA and have him in a safe house. Roger and his team go to see him to get information from him. Knowing that there is a leak and an assassin is hot on their tail trying to kill them, they go to the "safe house", pull the scientist OUTSIDE where he is shot by the assassin, end up in a ridiculouscar chase, which ends in a plunge down a steep cliff, where the assassin (one of Russia`s best, the president's "go to guy") does not bother to check and see if they are dead, but assumes... see where I am going with this?

On to the technical aspects of this book. First, John Etterlee is a fellow veteran. I thank you for your service, sir. Knowing this, the action scenes should be a little more realistic. Much of the story seems like Mr. Etterlee's research was done by reading Mack Bolan's "The Executioner" series. There are numerous glaring editorial issues. Misspellings, incorrect word usage, and at one point, Roger throws the keys to a car to the SAS captain and tells him to drive. A few short paragraphs later, Roger hits the brakes... These kinds of mistakes are unforgivable to me. There was no real character development. We are never given a valid reason why the CIA chose to approach Roger. Nor does Roger's reasoning for leaving his family to go on this international turkey shoot make any sense to me.

I was given a free copy of this book for an honest review. I would wait for it to come out on cable, even then I might watch reruns of "Who's the Boss?"

I enjoyed this book. This is book two in the series and I can say having missing book one that you don't need to have listened to the previous book go enjoy this one, I never felt like I was missing any of the story line. There is plenty of action and intrigue that the hours just flew by. I tend to to find with spy thrillers that I have problems keeping all the foreign names straight and get easily confused but this isn't the case with this story. I don't know if that was because there isn't that many different characters or the write just did a good job with the writing. There was a few surprises, in other words a good listen and a series to keep an eye out for.
Roger just want to ride horses with his young son but two powerful governments have other ideas. One is the Russian government, or to be precise the Russian president who wants to take back his country's power by starting a war.The other government is his own, they want him to be the man on the ground in Russia putting a stop to it. How can he fuse when his country comes calling and that by helping to stop a nuclear attack he is also saving his family. The Russians have been planning the attack for years and don't like the idea of an American ranger and an English SAS team putting a spanner in the works so send out there own assassin to see that the mission goes ahead. And so begins a deadly game of cat and mouse.
The narrator was okay and I had no problems understanding him but he did have a gruff voice and spoke quite slowly. Very English sounding but he did give some of the characters some very good accents.

Overall, the book was written pretty well.

The beginning on how the main character finds himself in these adventures (I'm not going to say much detail because that's why you read the story!) is not really believed nor is how they transitioned from some places to others as the travel timeline\how they find themselves in/out of countries is not overall believable.

However, if you leave that on the floor and just sit back and go with the overall plot of the book, its a very enjoyable read. This comes from a reader who is part of a military family where a family member just finds their loved one there and then just gone. Each military family handles leaving/death of said military member differently. Now as an VFW Aux member, you get to see how much this wears on both sides.

Anyhow, back to the story. The turn of events time and again did keep you guessing even after you could figure out what the end game was going to be, there were more spins on it. I say this is a great way to keep the reader guessing - and reading.

I would read this author again and am already wondering what our main character (and his sidekick which I ended up being very fond of) get into next.

I really liked the premise of this book. The way it started, it reminded me of a Tom Clancy novel. Roger starts out almost as a family man "James Bond". He gets unwillingly gets sucked into an international espionage game because of his strong patriotic fervor. The plot line is interesting and flows really well at the start. I found it a bit tedious in the middle because it seemed like they were just chasing around the countryside, but the plot was going nowhere. While I enjoyed the book, I felt it was a bit disjointed in that 3/4 of the story was trying to pre-empt the Russian President's nuclear attack on the US by stopping his ICBM, but then at the last minute the whole plot shifted to a truck bomb in the US. I did enjoy the ending, but would have liked a different path to get there.

Ex-Army Ranger Roger O'Neil is recruited by the CIA to go undercover into Russia and stop a nuclear attack on the USA. With a maniac Russian President and a crazed assassin after him, Roger must work with his team to stop the attack. But not knowing where or just what might happen it will take all of Roger and his teams efforts to stop this. With a climax building throughout the book and lots of action, this story takes you to a breathtaking climax that will shock you. And I was quite satisfied with the ending. Looking forward to reading more in this series. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion.

Excellent follow on storyline.

The author has brought the main character from his previous book and blended him in with new characters to aid him in the fight against terrorism..
The main character Roger epitomizes the need for special forces to eradicate from the world the terrorists and the countries that help them to enable the people of the world to sleep safely in their homes at night.
The author brings the characters and the storyline to life and makes it difficult to put the book down, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am looking forward to reading the follow up books in this series.

The writing style of your book was the highlight for me. Clean-cut and quite stylish in places, it’s obvious that this work has been looked over with keen eyes. The prose was easy to read and set the mood and atmosphere perfectly.
Roger’s morality was one of the sections I enjoyed the most. While, he’s certainly the protagonist, there was a scene that cemented a slight cruel streak in him. These were the sections in the book I enjoyed the most, and it’s commendable for taking this route in your character writing.

A thrilling ride!!

I was sent this book via Voracious Readers. It is a fast moving action book covering Russia, UK and USA. It starts with the CIA recruiting a retired ex army ranger Roger (think James Bond action without the women) to carry out a special operation to stop a possible world war 3. It started out similar to other books in setting out the background but you soon realise this is different. it is nail biting in parts and it is difficult to put the book down.

This spy thriller has a good premise, but needs some work. The writing is a bit stilted and doesn't make sense at some points. The good guys seem a bit inept at the beginning, but somehow are seasoned pros by the end. Follow up on some of the minor characters would be nice, as a wounded soldier's character never gets mentioned again. And some plot points were not explained, leaving the reader a bit confused. It just didn't keep my interest very well. Plus a lot of typos too.

A good, fast-paced political thriller. Not just Roger O'Neal, but all the characters are very well etched out. The highlight for me was John Etterlee's refreshingly different portrayal of the American and Russian Presidents and their diametrically opposite personalities.... i highly recommend this book. A definite must read for fans of military and political thrillers.

Fabulous story, easy to read. Action packed from the outset and was difficult to put down.
The story is somewhat far fetched- but who cares when the action scenes are fast paced and happen often. Your typical CIA vs Russians spy thriller, shoot em all and blow it up... love it!
