This Is How You Make A Movie is a great book by my good friend Tim Grierson. He outlines many of the different aspects of filmmaking and gives three good examples for each of the aspects. Acting, directing, lighting & camera, editing, and writing—Tim offers insight into ideas on all these topics. It’s light and gives a nice overview. While he dips into cinema classics I think the best part is that his selections are very accessible: some picks include The Avengers, The Social Network, and Elf, alongside higher minded selections like Persona or The Night of the Hunter.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Grierson’s movie podcast with Will Leitch, so I had my eye on this one since Tim announced it.

It’s pretty straightforward. Grierson himself describes the book as a filmmaking 101 textbook, which is accurate. There aren’t any frills here.

As a movie fan with no background in film, I still found it entertaining, though. The real enjoyment derived from the book comes not in the time actually spent reading it, but from watching films with the newfound knowledge the book contains.

Recommend @TimGrierson book as a concise intro into film techniques. As an actor, it is helpful for gaining a better understanding and appreciation about the different film methods. Plus, I’ve ordered three books more based off his recommendations!

Quick, bite size descriptions of different aspects of filmmaking, each illustrated with an example from a well-known film. Not deep, but a broad and easily digestible overview of filmmaking.

It's a very quick read, and doesn't go into a lot of depth, but has good examples, and covers a lot of different areas that contribute to making a successful film.

I struggle with noticing and understanding the technical aspects of filmmaking. This book is straightforward with film examples of every technique described. Loved it.

An accessible introduction to a number of filmmaking techniques, but too surface level to have any real substance in my opinion.

Such a fun book to page through. Tim is great at explaining what all goes into a film. It’s a lot more than I realized!

I like the style of quick and small examples of each chapter and section. But I was left wanting more though. Some of the examples were a bit off too.
