What a great romantic suspense debut! And I love the Canadian setting and the police procedural vibe that brings insight into casework. Lots of action. Even more dead ends. And a super creepy villain who is always one step ahead. I felt like I was on the ground dodging bullets right along with Kaylin and Hudson. My sleuthing armchair got a great workout but I was still stunned by a certain turn of events. Love it when an author trips me up. And I was feeling all smug about my detective skills too. Ha!

The romance was...prickly. :-) Kaylin and Hudson have worked together before and it didn't go well so both of them have their backs up when they are thrown together by the higher ups in a special task force. There's lots for them to work through this time round -- both personally and professionally and Kaylin has some spiritual struggles that make it harder for her to let go of past hurts. A realistic portrayal that highlights the grace forgiveness can bring even in the midst of the most trying times.

Darlene Turner has written a suspense novel that has all of the elements that I love: dedicated heroes, unknown villains, criminal acts that must be stopped, and non-stop action. Kaylin Poirier and Hudson Steeves are both strong characters individually and as a team they are unbeatable but it is their personal characteristics that make them so special. Hudson's moral compass is based on his deep trust in God and Kaylin's personal doubts help lend realism as she struggles to find and develop her own strong faith in God. Grace and forgiveness are a central theme but did I mention the romance? It's apparent that both Kaylin and Hudson feel an undeniable attraction to each other but can they ever hope for a future together?

Border Breach is an exceptional debut novel that is filled with heartwarming scenes and surprising revelations. It is a must-read book and I certainly recommend it to all who enjoy contemporary Christian fiction and romantic suspense.

“It didn’t matter what she had done in her life, He would always be there for her. No matter what.”

With non-stop action and gripping suspense, author Darlene L. Turner pens an intense tale of corruption and drug smuggling across the border. In Darlene L. Turner’s debut novel, Border Breach, Canadian law enforcement and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) join forces to take down a drug smuggling operation that is operating between the U.S. and Canada.

Handsome police constable Hudson Steeves and CBSA officer Kaylin Poirier are instructed to work together to stop a drug smuggling ring. Their assignment comes at a high price as they immediately become targets and attempts on their lives threaten to derail the investigation.

As the clues sprinkled throughout the novel come together to form the final piece of the puzzle, readers will be shocked at the culprit’s true identity. This novel realistically deals with topics that are relevant in today’s society, especially with the prevalent drug issues in our country.

Darlene L. Turner shares the message that God is always there for us and leaves readers filled with hope through God’s never-ending love and forgiveness. Border Breach is recommended for readers who enjoy inspirational romantic suspense. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future.

This is a great book to read. Its fast paced and alot of action. I really enjoyed meeting Canadian Border Patrol Kaylin Poirier and Police constable Hudson Steeves. The plot has alot of twists that keeps you guessing to the end. It has a few surprises in it. I like that its dealing with a new part of the Canadian government. It has some neat things that are happening that are relevant for today. Its dealing with a drug problem that is a ongoing problem today. I like how she brings out Kaylin's character in ways that people can relate to her. She does the same with Hudson. Its well written and hard to put down. I'm looking forward to reading her next book. ‘She needed proof of God’s existence. She just couldn’t believe in an entity who supposedly watched over her.’

In Darlene L Turner’s debut, a Canadian constable and border officer join forces to bring down a drug smuggling ring. But at every turn they are thwarted in their attempts. And threatened. Even injured. How can they hope to accomplish this task if they are being hunted down and nearly killed at every turn?

Turner has written a believable novel populated with good characters and a plot that holds the reader’s interest. Recommended.

*My thanks to the publisher and author for a prevcopy of this book. The opinion in this review is my own.

Canadian Border Agent Kaylin Poirier and Constable Hudson Steeves must join forces to stop a deadly drug ring, with a lethal new product on the market. Kaylin and Hudson have worked together in the past, to disastrous results, but as they work on the case they become targets themselves and have to catch the culprits before they become the next victims.

Kaylin is a strong and capable young woman, and draws inspiration and motivation from the pain of her past. She is very conscientious and devoted to her job, though at times she feels like she is constantly proving herself again and again, which eats at her confidence. She doesn't like to think about faith, and I liked how Hudson challenges her in that way.

Hudson is devoted to finding the kingpins of the drug ring, and he knows that he made mistakes last time he worked with Kaylin. He is strong in his faith, and aware of his failings. I liked his honesty and how he really does work hard to be more conscious of how he treats others.

A high stakes, action packed adventure from debut author, Darlene L. Turner. I liked how both Kaylin and Hudson make an effort to open up the lies of communication, leading to a stronger partnership, and great interaction throughout. I loved the strong backstory, as well as the secondary storyline of Kaylin and her father's difficult relationship. Fantastic read from beginning to end, I didn't want to put it down! Highly recommend!

This is a new to me author that I really enjoyed! I will be looking for more from her in the future because that's how well she writes.
I really enjoyed this book and I finished in a few hours. I think I finished about 2 in the morning.
This book will have you holding your breath and rooting for these awesome characters at the same time! You won't believe who the person is and it's not who you will think it is if that makes any sense. Lots of twists and turns that will keep you on your toes and head spinning from the beginning
Apparently I missed something from the first book but I quickly caught on as to what happened in this book. It truly is a can't put down book until you're finished deal. I really liked it.
The author has done an amazing job with adding God in there as well.
Sometimes we just need help from God with the reminder that He is there wherever we are. We can't run nor hide because eventually He'll find us or we'll end up needing Him. I don't know about ya'll but I'm nothing without my Savior.
All I can say is wow! Awesome job!
I highly recommend this book.

Wowza! This book is FABULOUS!
Before I finished the first chapter I knew I was going to love this book, and love it I did!
The suspense was never ending and SOOOO good, I was totally on the edge of my seat from start to finish and couldn't stop reading! And I have to say that I was totally shocked by the identity of one of the villains, and that doesn't happen often because I read a lot of suspense books, well done!
This book has the perfect blend of suspense, romance, faith, and character development, and none of those elements were lacking the slightest bit!
I loved that Kaylin and Hudson knew each other prior to the start of the story, and I felt that they went from disliking each other, to caring for each other, to falling in love in a completely natural and realistic way, no insta-love here, and I loved that!
I absolutely loved getting to armchair travel and explore Canada alongside Kaylin and Hudson.
Romantic suspense is my favorite genre and I'm very picky when it comes to choosing books in this genre. I only have a handful of romantic suspense authors that are must-read favorites for me, and with Border Breach Darlene L. Turner has earned a permanent spot on that list!
I seriously loved Border Breach so much that I already want to re-read it!
I honestly can't think of a single thing I didn't love about this book. I will definitely be thinking about these characters for a long time to come.
Border Breach is without question one of the best Love Inspired Suspense novels I've ever read, and I most highly recommend it!
Okay, I'm done gushing, for now, but let me just say this: if you're a romantic suspense fan you need this book in your life ASAP!

Border Breach is a story about a CBSA Agent named Kaylin Poirier. While she is allowing visitors into Canada, a floral van approaches and tries to kill her. They get away and she becomes part of a task force to bring down a drug ring. Her partner is Hudson Steeves. A person she didn't want to work with again. Though they had a difficult case before, things are different now. They soon discover to work together and bring down the drug kingpin. It's a very suspenseful book and will keep you on your toes! You'll get to explore the relationships that Kaylin has with Hudson, her father, and her mother figure Diane. Kaylin and Hudson will also forgive and let go with things in their past and find a way to each other. It's a you can't put it down type of book.

Really good debut. I was gripped right away and then intrigued as the body count grew. I enjoyed the main characters and the personal journeys they went on and, impressively, didn’t figure out who the baddie was until it was revealed. I’ll definitely be looking out for more by Darlene Turner.

In Border Breach, Darlene L. Turner takes readers into the world of Canadian law enforcement officers and their joint tasks forces while taking readers on an adventure they won’t forget.

Kaylin and Hudson have met before and neither has a pleasant memory of their previous work together. But when someone takes a shot at her, the two are thrust back into each other orbits to find the head honcho of the drug-smuggling ring.

High energy and fast paced, Turner’s first Love Inspired Suspense book hits all the high notes of this line. Just when you take a breath, another bomb (sometimes a literal one) is dropped into these two people’s lives. And I there are plenty of suspects to keep you guessing as to who the true villain is.

There are a couple names mentioned in this book that I really hope to see in a future book from this author, as well, because one story from her is not enough.

A fast-paced suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat. Katlin and Hudson are two strong and unique characters. Forgiveness and Grace are two major themes that flow throughout the plot.

This is a fantastic debut novel. That had plenty of heartfelt moments woven along with the suspense, and an unexpecting twist that really surprised me. This is a well written book and I am looking forward to what this author will bring to us next.

BORDER BREACH by Darlene L. Turner is the amazing, fast paced story of Canada Border Officer Kaylin Poirier and police constable Hudson Steeves as they work together to crack a drug-smuggling ring.

Kaylin Poirier has a lot to prove, to her department, to her father and to herself. Her time living on the streets gave her determination and her time living with Diane, when she took her in, gave her hope for a future which led her to applying for the job with CBSA. The one thing she hasn’t found is faith in religion. Still feeling the after effects of her upbringing and a failed romance, Kaylin is determined to prove she has value and that she can fulfill her job with honor and skill.

Hudson Steeves has finally battled his way out of the dark tunnel after he found out his fiancé was dating two other men at the same time she claimed to have loved him. His faith was his strong hold in winning that battle. Now he must concentrate on finding the drug lords and stop the smuggling operation that landed his nephew in a local hospital hanging to life by a thread.

Can Kaylin and Hudson work together after the fiasco of the last time they worked together? After Kaylin’s life is threatened, not once but several times, can Hudson continue to keep her safe? Will the death of Kaylin’s ex-fiancé, who had escaped from prison, end the nightmare or will the terror continue? Is the abduction of Kaylin’s father and all the murders connected? Had God abandoned Kaylin in the past or was it God that sent the right help at the right time only in a form different from what Kaylin was looking for? Will the faith of Diane and Hudson and their lives by example open up Kaylin’s mind that God does exist? Can they find Kaylin’s Dad before he’s killed too? Can Kaylin and Hudson stop to drug smuggling before more people die?

Darlene L. Turner wrote a book that everyone can fall in love with. It has danger, suspense, romance and faith all rolled into a wonderfully written story that will have you turning pages rooting for not only for the good guys to win but for Kaylin and Hudson to find their way to each other. Love the way the author addresses faith – the lack of it in some and the strength of it in others. She shows that all things are answered, but in God’s way and his time. It reminds us that all we have to do is be open to God’s love and to ask.

Highly recommend BORDER BREACH to anyone that loves a great book that will touch your heart, get your adrenaline pumping and give you food for thought. I for one, will be looking for more books by this author.

In true Love Inspired Suspense fashion, the action never lets up from page one to the end. Canadian border patrol officer Kaylin Poirier and police constable Hudson Steeves must work together to find the drug smugglers responsible for bringing a lethal new version of heroine into Canada. Debut author Darlene L. Turner keeps the action rolling from one shoot-out to the next. We never know where the danger is coming from, and Kaylin and Hudson must navigate both their combustible investigation along with their own demons from the past. Their happy ending comes after every last bit of suspense and peril have been overcome.

Border Breach is the debut book from Darlene Turner. What a way to introduce readers to this talented new author.

Border Breach takes us to the northern border between Canada and the U.S. Canadian border officer Kaylin Poirier and Constable Hudson Steeves are paired together in a task force to stop a drug smuggling ring that crosses borders and destroys lives.

This story will keep you guessing. It will pull you in for the emotions evoked for such a devastating subject. The characters are well written. The chemistry between Kaylin and Hudson builds naturally and wonderfully.

This is definitely a book I would recommend. I hope there will be more stories in this series so we can be updated on these characters. I look forward to reading Turner's next book.

So I’ve read a ton of books, but never anything by Darlene Turner and boy, have I been missing out! The book starts off with Canada border officer Kaylin Poirier doing the same job she does everyday, checking to ensure that no one is smuggling anything (especially drugs) into Canada; however, little did she know that a vehicle was going to cross her border that would change her life forever.
Overall, the book has an engaging, “edge of your seat” kind of plot and it starts within the first chapter and has you biting your nails until the last few pages. The story had some parts that I didn’t care for, but nothing super violent or graphic; however, there are some people who are killed because of the drug dealers. >One thing that really stood out to me was the end. The culprit/villain/mastermind that’s revealed at the end is so shocking that I had to read that part twice!!
Another thing I really liked was the two main characters, Kaylin and Hudson. I loved that although they were two totally different people, their attitudes and strengths complemented each other and helped them to grow closer to each other and to God – even though neither of them wanted any kind of relationship with the other. (they had a past experience they both didn’t want to do over). All that being said, I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars****
Special thanks to Darlene L. Turner, The JustRead Publicity Team and Harlequin books for letting me read and review this book – all opinions are my own.

Kaylin Poirier is a Canadian Border Agent. I’ve never read a book with this profession before, so I was excited to start reading. Drugs are being smuggled across the border, and her police captain father (with whom she has a tenuous relationship) assigns her to partner up with Constable Hudson Steeves. They worked a case together in the past, and she was NOT looking forward to working with him again. Hudson has found renewed faith in the Lord since then. Kaylin is letting her past prevent her from having faith. Can Hudson help her? This book has twists and turns of suspense with the agents racing against the clock to stop the smuggling, and stop any more deaths. It also explores relationships...Kaylin and Hudson, Kaylin and her father. Can she learn to forgive and let go of past hurts, so she can move forward in the future? This is a page turner!

I dove right in when this book arrived in the mail and finished it in a couple of days. I'd never read about border patrol officers before, so I found that rather interesting. And I mean, look at that swoony cover. How could I resist?
Kaylin Poirier and Hudson Steeves have a lot to deal with in this romantic suspense, not only in joining forces and stopping drug smugglers but also dealing with their pasts. The last time they worked together didn't go well. Kaylin particularly has a lot to come to terms with and you will have to read the book to see how she fares. These two characters dodge danger from page one. You never know what's going to happen next.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher and my opinion is my own.

My Thoughts on Border Breach by Darlene L. Turner
Suggested Beverage Pairing: Canadian Apple (non-alcoholic)
Characterization
Canada border officer Kaylin Poirier doesn’t believe in God. How could she when no one has ever stuck around for her? Why would an invisible God?

Kaylin struggles to trust people. She hasn’t had many people in her life who have deserved her trust. The last time she had to work with Hudson Steeves, he wasn’t on a list of trust either. This time she discovers he’s a Christian. Yet another black mark in her book.

Police constable Hudson Steeves is focused on his job, taking down a drug smuggling ring that is focused on teenagers. But when Kaylin Poirier is assigned to work with him again, he finds himself drawn to her as more than a partner on a task force. He speaks God’s love over her as she struggles with her faith.

Hudson has a past of his own, including an ex-fiance who has all the sudden decided she wants him back. Although Hudson reflects on his past engagement, it does not seem to overwhelmingly impact his attitude or actions toward a possible relationship with Kaylin.

The Plot
Four stars for Border Breach by Darlene L. Turner.

Two separate agencies are pushed to work together to shut down an international drug trafficking ring causing injury and death to teenagers. It just so happens that Kaylin and Hudson have worked together in the past on a drug case. The very case resulting in Kaylin’s fiance being sent to prison.

Kaylin and Hudson don’t have time to bicker with each other during this case. From the opening scene there are unseen people shooting at them. The two follow all the leads, but it seems like the shooter is always one step ahead of them.

Throughout the process, Hudson and minor characters mention God to Kaylin. She always comes back with something full of disbelief. Until she finds herself captive in a boathouse. In that dire situation, she finds herself calling out to God, seeing His hand in her past, and arguing why He couldn’t love her after all she has done.

Yet when she confesses her unbelief to Him, a peace overcomes her in the midst of her trial.

“”God, if You’re there, save me. I surrender myself to you.”

Peace washed over her like a bucket of cold water dumped on her during a warm summer day.”

Border Breach
Hudson and Kaylin are continually together through the various traumatic events in this plot. There is death, murder, drug trafficking, drug use, kidnapping, and mental abuse within this plot. If a reader is sensitive to any of those topics, this may be a difficult read.

The suspense part of this novel, is the focus. I won’t give away anything. Multiple times I thought I had figured out who was the mole and who was the kingpin. Those ideas changed a time or two. This made the mystery worth it. I did not have everything neatly solved and filed away prior to the climax.

The four star rating comes from the lack of emotional depth each character exhibited. This text was ripe for emotion. However, not one tear or laugh escaped from this reader. That is the mark with which I’ve set for five stars.

I received a free copy of this book from the author. Opinions included in this review are mine and mine alone.

Trouble at the border

Darlene L. Turner is a new author for me. Intrigued by the description of Border Breach, I decided to give it a read.

I grew up in Southern California and experienced border checks anytime we traveled between Orange and San Diego Counties and had never really considered the various things the agents were looking for. Honestly, I mostly just considered the checks an inconvenience. I now have a new perspective about the function of these "annoying" checks and admire the men and women who attempt to keep drugs and criminals out of their countries.

Kaylin and Hudson had previously worked together – it was not a good experience! He had allowed his personal drama to affect his work. But he was determined to not allow that to happen again!

I enjoyed the mystery of the identities of Valentino, the one who was controlling the drug rings, and of the one who was providing him with information of Kaylin and Hudson's whereabouts. I had a hunch about Valentino, which did end up being correct, but was way off on who the mole was!

I enjoyed watching Kaylin's perspective about God change as she came to the end of herself and turned to Him. In some ways, the change was abrupt and could have been developed more (had this been a longer story) and yet it worked. While the name of Jesus was not mentioned, the spiritual lessons learned were consistent with Christian teaching.

I never did understand Hudson's ex-fiancé's motivation for what she did in this story, nor did the change in Kaylin's father seem to be explained. Yet those things were minor and didn't detract from my enjoyment of the book.

If you enjoy light romantic suspense with a spiritual focus, I encourage you to give Border Breach a read.

I will be totally honest and state that I’m not 100% certain if I have ever read a novel by Darlene L. Turner. I have been reading Love Inspired Suspense for years so I have lost track of what I have and have not read. Based on Border Breach I plan to remedy that and plan to read more by this talented author.

Action began quickly during the very first chapter and the suspense escalated throughout the book. The plot was riddled with hints but not only were the characters misled by many of them but I was also thoroughly surprised by the revelation near the end. I love it when I don’t have everything all figured out by the middle of the book.

The characters were real and easy to identify with. Kaylin’s past that caused her to doubt God and Hudson’s experiences had left him with nothing but his faith in God and distrust of women. It was fun to watch the sparks fly between them as they fought to stay alive while attempting to bring down a drug ring operating both in Canada and the U.S.

Border Breach is an excellent book that illustrates Kaylin’s journey to faith and forgiveness. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Will stopping drug smugglers cost their lives?

It's always fun to try a new-to-me author, especially when it's their Love Inspired Suspense debut. These slim little novels are always a quick enjoyable read and Border Breach was very much so. The action starts out on page one and doesn't let up for readers or for Kaylin and Hudson. Of course, the romantic sparks are pretty lively, too.

I think one of my favorite things about the story was the setting. How many Love Inspired Suspense books, or any other Christian novels for that matter, are set in Canada? Outside of Janette Oke, not many. Which is another thing I really appreciated about Border Breach, author Darlene L. Turner is Canadian herself and it really lends authenticity to her story and her characters.

Whether you love romantic suspense or love to try new authors, Darlene L. Turner has you covered in this thrill-a-minute novel from north of the 49th Parallel....Don't miss it a single exciting page!

Border Breach by Darlene Turner will keep you on the edge of your seat the entire time you’re reading it! Every time I started to relax a bit, something unexpected would happen! I loved that this story was set in Canada! I haven’t read many books set there and the different setting made for a nice change!

I really liked both main characters and that they each had interesting backstories. I also liked that they had worked together in the past so they already knew each other. As for the bad guy, I was totally and completely taken by surprise!

I’m looking forward to reading whatever Darlene Turner brings us next!

Great debut book by Darlene L. Turner! Border Breach has non-stop action from the first page that make the book hard to put down. Great hero and heroine characters that you would want protecting you. In addition, the characters have real struggles including the need to forgive and to trust. The drug smuggling storyline fits into current events. I hope this is the first of many inspirational suspense books from Darlene L. Turner.

This is the author’s debut Love Inspired Suspense book and she comes out with a bang in this head-spinning and pulse-pounding story that crosses from the United States into Canada.

Turner’s writing style was engaging and descriptive, almost putting the reader right in the center of this exciting tale. And, there is no end to excitement here!

There will be some trigger warnings – drug overdose and suicide.

Kaylin and Hudson find themselves in the middle of a drug smuggling case that involves car chases, car explosions, arson, shootouts, and test of their faith – or rather Hudson’s faith. Kaylin, given her past with her father – who also happens to be Chief Marshall Poirier – she doesn’t seem to be too in touch with God, actually she’s not even on speaking terms with him.

But, what Kaylin and Hudson do have in common – their fight to get the drugs off the streets. For Kaylin, it is because of her late brother, Todd. For Hudson, his nephew is fighting for his life. This isn’t just a case – it is a personal mission. But, they also have to watch their backs due to the mysterious messages that threaten Kaylin and the investigation.

There is a character that when I FIRST saw him I had my doubts about his sincerity – that waffled, but I was so sure about him. And, I was right. But, I did have my doubts. In addition, one of the “kids” (Benji), I had some reservations about. I didn’t like him, felt sorry for him – this one was all over the place. Though what eventually happens to him is tragic, but not unexpected.

What is interesting is chapter five (5) sets up the events of the second book, Abducted in Alaska, and readers should definitely take notes here – Layke Jackson and Hannah Morgan are introduced. Layke is Hudson’s friend, and ironically Hannah is Kaylin’s. We learn a little of their pasts which includes being homeless at one point. It shows the characters’ tenacity and determination to rise above their circumstances.

And, the end to chapter five is a figurative heart-stopper.

There are multiple family dynamics going on here – Kaylin and her family, Hudson and his, along with them coming to terms with their pasts. Hudson doesn’t want a woman with secrets, those are all Kaylin has. The build up to the romance is slow and sweet – natural, given the circumstances. And, those circumstances are explosive.

While they are investigating the drug ring, someone is targeting the task force. Everywhere they turn – they’re being ambushed.

Kaylin and Hudson are forced to talk to her ex-boyfriend. And, Hudson learns his nephew’s overdose wasn’t an accident – it was intentional. But, Matt survives and is able to tell Hudson what he knows, which involves not-so-innocent Benji.

After Kaylin is abducted and rescued they come to realize there is a mole either in Hudson’s group or Kaylin’s. I suspected one person as the mole/leak and I was SO WRONG! Turner blindsided me on this one!

The action never stops with this and even the climatic end has its own drama woven in. During the middle of a shootout, and fighting for their lives, a tornado threatens everyone. Talk about suspense!

It comes to a heart-breaking, thrilling, and beautiful conclusion that gets further wrapped up at the end of Abducted in Alaska. And, the one character I suspected of being the bad guy, I was right about that.

I could barely take notes when reading this. And, I honestly could not put this book down. And, I finished it in less than 24 hours. It is has been a VERY LONG time since I’ve done that with one of these books. I used to do it all the time back between 2000-2002 with the Harlequin Intrigue line. It was interesting to experience that again. But, I also needed to take breaks as even the mid-chapter scenes were intense. At times I had to stop to catch my breath.

This definitely didn’t plod along, and the chapters seemed relatively short given the series. Of course, it could’ve just been that I didn’t notice due to the intensity of the action.

One thing I wanted to know – why did Hudson’s “ex”, Rebecca, keep popping up and saying they were engaged?

I loved the action, the suspense, and the mystery. I also learned something I didn’t know – that Canada also has 9-1-1. Most countries are different with the emergency code so I stopped to look it up. Also, the author’s use of weapon terminology is spot on. She really did her research on everything.

As this is Love Inspired Suspense; there will be themes of forgiveness, redemption, and second chances. There are also references to God and prayer which are key elements to the characters and the story. This book was definitely stronger on the faith theme than most books of the line, which I didn’t mind.

Fans of the genre and those who enjoy the Love Inspired Suspense books are sure to love this book!! I honestly couldn’t wait to read Abducted in Alaska next. In fact, I already read it by the time I drafted (and posted) this review. I can’t wait to read her future books!
