Please note: I was gifted a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review

This was a great novella to read - so much so I read it all in one go! It's low fantasy, with magical characters set in the real world, and a fast-paced and gripping plot. Main character Emilia is very easy to empathise with, and there's a great set of minor characters behind her.

If I'm honest I felt like this could have been a full-length novel - a bit more lore, especially around the Wandless and their history, would have been a nice addition. However, it's written very well and made an enjoyable read, so I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoys action-focused low-fantasy.

This book began in the midst of events! Rather than a slow build up we're having to deal with things head on from page 1. Such an interesting take on magic, rather different to other peoples ideas of the magic world. There are some links to past events in world history (but you'll have to find them yourselves) and what life would be like if they were put into the world of non-magic and magical humans living together. I wish the book had been longer as I was getting into it and hope there are more books to come, along with a look at Emilias life since the end of this short story. Great work by James Batchelor. Having known him as a young girl through his friendship with my sister its great to know he's taken to writing as his future and I'm so proud of this book. It's brilliant!
