Harper is a romance author suffering from writer's block.

Perfect timing, because her great-aunt is vacationing in europe and needs someone to babysit her house in upstate new york.

The perfect place for Harper to find some inspiration.

Maybe in all the animals she suddenly has to care for?
Maybe in the old diaries and papers she finds in the attic?
Maybe in the sexy farmer she saw in the cornfield?

But he's not really all that nice!

Stone doesn't like city folks coming into town and buying up real estate and tearing down historic buildings to build some modern whatnots.

But he's so very intruiged by this beautiful city girl ...

LET THE FUN TIMES BEGIN!

Such an adorable Small-Town-Rom-Com!

I just loved reading this!

Full of hilarious moments and sexy moments and exciting mystery moments and author and animal moments.

I just adored Harper and Stone!

They're perfect for each other - but Harper is only in town until her aunt is back. Right?!
But she's been so inspired since she arrived. And she's also falling for Stone and the animals and her new friends and the whole adorable town.

Great romance! Great cast of people and animals!

And there are lots of brothers and friends left to get their own story!
Can't wait to hear more from Cash, Boone, Red & Bethany!

I also really LOVE the cover - the guy and the colors - totally my kind of thing!☺

And I SO want to eat some corn now!!!!

KISSING BOOKS was an adorable + funny + sweet small town love story! Run to your nearest amazon for your own Stone - he'll be sold out in no time - and this one is MINE!

...also, if you're weird like me.... the title. I kinda thought Books was the name of our hero, nope - it's really about books - readable books. Harper is an author of romance - aka kissing books. And some of the prudish town seniors are not fans of 'kissing' in books! LOL!

KISSING BOOKS EXCERPT
Harper

My first thought when I turned my car into Great Aunt Agnes’s driveway and slowly pulled around the back of the massive old house was that there were a hell of a lot of doors.

If each one had its own key, I’d be walking around jingling like a janitor. Of course, I could just use the back door by where my car was parked. But being in the center of the town, walking distance to everything, I’d probably use the front door a lot as well.

I’d figure it out. I had time to get into a routine.

I envisioned how many extra hours I’d have to write—once I lied and told my Mom I had spotty cell signal here. That would give me the perfect excuse to turn my phone off while I was working.

That idea was very appealing and I was still smiling as the back door of Aunt Agnes’s house swung open and a girl with mile long legs and pale golden hair down to her butt walked out.

Was everyone in Mudville blonde? I’d seen a lot of people walking as I’d navigated my way down Main Street and it was possible I was the only brunette in town.

At least it certainly seemed that way. As I cut the engine and swung open the car door, the girl who smiled and delivered me a wave reinforced my theory.

“Hey. You must be Agnes’s niece.” She bounced down the back stairs toward me.

I slammed my car door and took my first stiff step after spending the last three hours behind the wheel. “I am. I’m Harper.”

“I’m Shalene. I’ve been keeping an eye on the place for her while she’s gone.”

“That’s what I heard. Thanks for doing that, by the way.”

She waved away my thanks. “Happy to help. Petunia is a sweetheart.”

I didn’t know who Petunia was and was about to ask when she continued.

“So I already moved my stuff out. The sheets are washed and back on the bed and I left some milk, corn and a steak in the fridge for you. Oh and there’s eggs, of course.”

“Wow. Thanks.” I’d brought some things with me—coffee, sugar, cans of soup—but I’d been planning on searching for a grocery store and shopping for perishables when I got here.

“My pleasure.”

“Let me reimburse you for the food you bought.” I turned back toward the car and reached through the open window to grab my purse.

“No. It didn’t cost me anything.”

I tipped my head to the side and cocked up a brow, fishing out my wallet. “I don’t believe you.”

She laughed. “It’s true. My family owns Morgan Farm. I get all the milk and corn and steaks I want for free.”

“Oh.” Was this ray of sunshine related to the grumpy corn farmer I’d met with Mom?

I found that hard to believe. The two were so opposite, they couldn’t be siblings. Of course, as an only child, who was I to judge?

“And the eggs are yours,” she continued. “I hope you’re a big egg eater. There’s two dozen in the fridge.”

She kept talking about eggs. Why, I wasn’t sure. But apparently I had a lot of them.

I guess I could make a quiche since she’d left me milk. That would make a nice breakfast or lunch. Although I’d offered to stay in Agnes’s house to give me more time to write. Not to take up baking.

“So let you let me show you around,” Shalene offered. “Do you need help carrying your stuff inside?”

Again I was struck by how sweet and polite this teenage girl was. And how completely opposite from the cocky corn guy. But I was going to turn down her offer of help.

I had an embarrassing amount of luggage with me. Since I was driving I figured why not over pack? At least that way I knew I’d have whatever I needed. I had no idea what kind of weather I’d encounter during my stay. And my electronics alone filled one whole bag.

“I’m fine. Thanks.” I stashed my wallet back in my purse and moved away from the car, anxious to see my new home for the near future.

“Okay.” She nodded.

I expected her to lead the way back up the stairs and to the house. She didn’t. She started toward the garage. Though it was so big it looked more like a barn than a garage.

“So the cats will come inside the house and want to cuddle when they feel social but usually they hang out here in the carriage house. I think they’re hunting mice. There’s probably a ton because of all the feed out here.”

I hadn’t heard anything about Agnes having cats prior to this but I was happy to hear it. I wasn’t allowed pets in my apartment. It was my one regret about my place. I’d enjoy having the company.

“How many cats does she have?” I asked, after taking note Shalene had used the plural.

“Five.”

“Oh.” My brows rose. Though I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised that Great Aunt Agnes was a cat lady.

“They’re all fixed though, so no worries there. But be aware strays sometimes wander in and eat the food I put out in their dish and I think one of the strays might be pregnant, by the looks of her.”

I didn’t know whether to be excited at the prospect of kittens or horrified that the feline population of the carriage house could double shortly.

“And of course, this is where Petunia lives,” Shalene said.

I decided I would have to worry about my cat problems later as Shalene slid open the carriage house door and I got my first look at Petunia, who was without doubt an honest to goodness pig.

My mouth dropped open, but Shalene didn’t notice as she continued with her tour of Agnes’s animals.

“There’s a door with a flap so Petunia can let herself in and out into the pen in the yard. All you have to do is make sure she has food and fresh water. Just don’t feed her too much. She’ll eat everything you put in front of her so you kind of have to make sure not to give her a lot. One scoop of feed in the morning and one scoop for dinner is all she’s supposed to have. Although I’ve been guilty of sneaking her some people food sometimes.”

Finally, Shalene turned and looked to me expectantly. As if I had some input on the care and feeding of a pig.

At the moment I had no words. Though I was understanding more with every passing moment why Agnes needed a house sitter and it had nothing to do with the house.

The damn woman was running an animal sanctuary, in a Victorian carriage house in the middle of town.

Petunia let out a snort, her nose shoved between the slats of the wooden enclosure inside the carriage house. I had a feeling it was less that she was greeting me and more that she hoped Shalene had some table scraps.

“Um . . .” I was still without words.

Cats were one thing but this was a pig. Shalene was a farm girl, but me? I, when faced with my first pig, was feeling very much like that city girl the hot corn picker had accused me of being.

It took a step closer and looked into the pen. I had a million questions. It couldn’t be as simple as Shalene made it seem.

“So she just stays in here or outside?” I asked.

“Yup. Well, except for Friday nights.”

I shot Shalene a glance. “What happens Friday nights?”

“You have to bring her down to the high school for the football game.”

I eyed the pig. I was no judge of hog flesh but she was a beefy gal. I had a feeling she could top out at close to two hundred pounds. How the hell was I going to get her into my car?

“Like in my car?” I asked.

And once she was inside, then what? Did I like seat belt her in and hope for the best? Did she even enjoy being in the car or was she going to fight me? I shot a glance at her feet. They looked like they could do some kind of damage to the upholstery, and to me.

“Oh, no. Her leash is hanging right inside the back door. You just walk her down to the school before game time. It’s just down the road. But that’s only for home games. When it’s an away game, the team takes her on the team bus, so you have to get her to the school early on those days. The schedule in on the calendar hanging inside the kitchen cabinet. I’ll show you when we go inside. Oh, and make sure you feed her dinner extra early on away game days. You want her to poop before she gets on the bus.”

I almost laughed. The whole thing was ridiculously comical. But at the same time there was nothing funny about any of this. I’d taken on much more than I’d ever imagined.

Mom might have been right. This had been an epically bad idea.

Since I’d rather die than admit that, I nodded. “Okay. I can handle that.”

Shalene smiled, as if she’d never had any doubt. I had enough doubt for both of us.

“So, that’s Petunia. Now let me introduce you to the girls.”

“All right.” I braced myself for pretty much anything as Shalene led me out of the carriage house.

In my mind I envisioned the girls as a bunch of little old ladies, Great Aunt Agnes’s friends, all clustered around a table in the diner just down the block. Possibly knitting.

If we were going to the diner, I hoped they served booze as well as food because I could sure use a drink right about now.

But Shalene didn’t lead me toward Main Street or to the diner. Nope. She led the way around the back of the carriage house to where I saw a mini replica of the building. And surrounding it, as they scratched and pecked at the dirt and grass, were what had to be the girls.

“Chickens,” I said, resigned.

“Yup. Six. That’s all you’re allowed in town, but believe me just these six lay more eggs than you’ll be able to keep up with eating alone. Agnes usually gives the extra eggs away.”

“All right.” I nodded. As this tour progressed, I was beginning to lose the ability to be shocked.

“They’ll put themselves away at sunset. All you have to do is come out and close and lock the door. Then open it again in the morning. I give them a scoop of feed in the morning and again in the evening when I’m feeding Petunia. Oh, and don’t forget to check the nesting boxes for eggs.”

“How often do they lay?” I asked, since this was my first chicken experience too.

“Every day.”

That explained the excess of eggs. I nodded and drew in a breath. “Okay.”

“Come on inside and I’ll give you the tour of the house.”

I nearly laughed at that. I’d been worried about taking care of this big house by myself but apparently I’d been completely off the mark.

What was outside was going to be far more challenging than anything inside.

“So the basement is a little creepy, but I think that’s just because I know this place used to be a funeral home.”

Or maybe not . . .

“Funeral home?” I stumbled over my own feet at that news.

“Just for a few years.” Shalene waved away my concern. “So let’s start with the downstairs bathroom. I can show you the trick to get the toilet to stop running. Oh, and don’t let me forget to show you where in the basement to turn the outside water on and off because the hose leaks. I can show you where the embalming room was while we’re down there.”

Running toilet. Leaky hose. Embalming room. I was absolutely and completely over my head here.

My world shifted on its axis at that realization. Up seemed like down. Day might as well have been night and nothing would ever be right again.

If the four horseman of the apocalypse rode up Main Street and through the backyard past the five cats, six chickens and the pig named Petunia I wouldn’t have batted an eye.

It felt like it was the end of days because there was no doubt now—my mother had been right.

God help me. God help us all.

It wasn't bad... but I still feel like I wasted my time. There isn't much romance and the whole story was pretty plain.

While this book had its moments, I can only say that it’s okay. It did give those small town feels that I was looking for and it even made me laugh quite a few times. However, I felt like the story dragged quite a bit at times. The relationship between Harper and Stone was okay, but I need to be honest and say that the chemistry wasn’t really there. I would have believed them to be more friends than lovers.

All in all, I have to appreciate a book that can make me laugh. This did that hand gave that southern charm that I love. Everything else including the romance, I wasn’t crazy about it. I see that this is a series, but I’m going to call it quits with this one.

I love a Small Town Romance and this book had all the best parts of the trope. Nosy neighbors, funny characters, small town history, and plenty of charm.

Harper is a Romance Writer who goes to house sit for her great aunt (in a very small town) so she can finish her latest books by the publisher's deadline. She runs into grumpy farmer, Stone, and the sparks fly! These two have great snarky banter and sizzling chemistry!

There were a lot of set ups in this book that seemed like they were going to lead to some great plot twists, but in the end they fell flat. The entire story revolves around long-buried small town secrets being unearthed and then nothing really dramatic is revealed. It felt really disappointing.

This is one of those romances when you are constantly mind-screaming at the characters "Just TALK to each other!!!" The level of basic miscommunication is frustrating, although that is a conflict I very much hate. Others might not mind it.

Overall this was a good read and I *might* continue reading the series, but it wasn't a WOW for me.

I was constantly saying I’m just going to read a little longer until I finally looked up and it was 2 in the morning and I had finished this book! Seriously funny...genuinely made me laugh out loud!! Just absolutely gorgeous...sharp humour, witty characters, (both main and secondary) real dialogue and lots of laughs....really brought all the feels too!! I will be definitely telling all of my friends to go pick up this book and series up (when the books come out :-)!) Even everything this amazing and very talented author has written (who I have been a big massive fan of for years and nearly owe all of her books!). Happy reading!!

This was absolutely so adorable. I love small-town romances. They're the cutest! I couldn't help yearning for a little more with this book; I ended up feeling a little bit unfulfilled, but nonetheless I thought it was really warm and fuzzy.

- insta attraction - check
- small town where people befriend strangers and are best buddies within an hour - check
- bitchy but oh so desirable female protagonist - check
- super good looking guy with golden flecks in his eyes - check
- who falls in love with the shrew after she was rude to him - check
- not worth suffering through this to the end - check

If there ever was an unlikable heroine and a brain dead hero - this is the place.

BTW:
Use of bad English grammar ("he and I" vs "he and me") and editing errors did not help the rating.

Loved the pick of this book, he gets stars just because of that...ok ok in all seriousness the book was cute. I enjoy small town romances, well some of them sometime I think the people are to nosy but sometimes Iike them because you feel closer to the main character, hey I didn't say we would all understand that.. I liked but felt something was missing..grab a copy and see how you feel about it and send me a message.. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3.5

"Even when he pissed me off, the man had a way of growning on me. I hadn't decided yet if that was a good thing or a bad thing."

I would label this book as a small town romance told at first person with the double POV and a trope of dislike/misjudged at first sight with a quick change of heart that turn into attraction and friendship and then temporary fling. Yeah, that's why I'm not a marketing guru😉. Having said that, I had a great time reading Harper and Stone's romance and part of the fun was discovering, at the same time as the heroine, what her temporary house-sitting in Mudville would entail.

Booklovers like me will probably tell you that the best part is when the hero help her build... Yeah, not telling you but it was worth the read😛. I just wished there was a little more background story to the characters. They don't need to all have tragic pasts but I still like knowing what molded them into the person they are today. Still a good entertainment though.

I really enjoyed this. I thought the couple had great chemistry, and more importantly, the timeline of their relationship felt realistic! There was no rush for love declarations within a week or two which I appreciated.

I thought the one thing I would have liked is more time between the H and h to really show how strong their connection was - a bunch of time mid-book was spent on a little mystery/caper situation which I felt suddenly took on a little too much focus.

Living in a funeral home. Pet pig Petunia.

These were the two things in the short blurb that got me excited. False advertising, I say, because they hardly featured in the book beyond a paragraph or two.

There was also no romance. The MCs meet, hate each other, are attracted to each other, sleep together. In less than a week.

There were a couple of good ideas but they were not enough for a higher rating.

Light and funny with characters that are easy to love, this romantic comedy has plenty of small town charm. I’ve only read Cat Johnson’s romantic suspense before, but even that had plenty of humor - and this ups the laughs significantly. Our hero is also a sexy, sweet farmer with a heart of gold, making it easy to get drawn in.

The story follows Harper, a romance novelist who is letting life pass her by as she stays locked away at home, working on her laptop in yoga pants. When her great aunt requests a housesitter for her small town home, Harper jumps at the chance. But she gets more than she bargained for with the creepy, giant old home and backyard full of animals. Add in the fact that she meets a grouchy farmer, Stone, who can’t seem to stay away, and life is suddenly very different for Harper. As she acclimates to small town life, Harper and Stone continue to be drawn to each other.

The writing style is great, making the pages fly by. First and foremost this is a romance, but there’s plenty of comedy, heart, and a touch of suspense. Stone is a fantastic hero - he’s protective but sweet, nice but decidedly alpha, and only has eyes for Harper. Harper is pretty feisty and easy to like. I was definitely rooting for them from the start, and the chemistry is there from the moment they meet. If I have a complaint about the book, it’s that things felt rushed between them at the end - we don’t get to savor them being together for long. We’re also introduced to Stone’s brothers, who would make great heroes in their own right. Overall, it’s a light and fun book that’s well worth a read.

Why oh why did I take so long to read this book? It has been sitting here, waiting patiently for me to pull my finger out, and sorry Kissing Books, I should have read it earler!

What an adorable book. I loves small town books (even though, moving from the burbs to a small town is not what it is cracked up to be - I am talking from first hand knowledge hahah)

I like how Harper comes to town, gets all inspired and riles up the stuffy, puritanical locals (I kind of ruffled a few feathers too when I first moved here !)

I love Stone - I mean, who doesn't love a hot farm boy? Yo can't help but fall for him along with Harper.

There is a bit of a mystery coming into Harper's life too as she looks after her aunt's house. So many secrets that people are trying to uncover. What could the town's long dead gossip have been hiding?

But will Harper stay in town, or will she and Stone be a fling?

You will have to read to find out.

I can't wait for Cash and Boone to get their stories.

This, I believe, is the first time I've read Cat Johnson. It will not be the last.

This book is stunningly realistic with characters that, although larger than life, have enough impact in the interactions that you find yourself laughing, crying and holding your breath as the story unfolds.

Well written and grasping your attention from the first opening sentences, this book is a thoroughly entertaining and engaging read. The book's blurb accurately relates the story outline without taking anything from the story itself. Absolutely brilliant, I can't wait to read another Cat Johnson book.

A five star review, only because I can't give a higher one.

Harper finds herself house sitting a house of comical horrors between the veritable zoo, running plumbing, old diaries, and remnants of a funeral home. If all of this can't cure writers block, then maybe her instant dislike / lust of Stone will. The relationships are fantastic and believable - an overbearing mother, brothers with raging hormones, gossiping elders bucking change, and a guy and a girl who will keep you on your toes. It's been a while since I read one of Cat's books but it is as fabulous as I expected. This is full of crazy antics, lust, wildlife, and steamy good times.

This was a cute, quick read but not the best writing I’ve ever seen. It was perfect for something to take my mind off back to school stress (it’s 2020 after all), and I liked the dual perspective. Stone (corny name) wasn’t developed all that much, but Harper (cute name) seemed like-able. It was kinda predictable (though I totally thought Harper bought the train depot, not some random dude) and the conflict was a little forced and quick (as was a lot of the development) but I expected that going in. It met my needs for the time and I think I’ll read the rest in the series (I figured Red and Bethany would have books about Cash and Boone- how perfect that Harper had two instant BFFs and Stone had two brothers) when they go on sale.

A quick summary (so I remember the book)- Harper is a romance writer who ends up house sitting for her great aunt upon request (her mom drove her up to Mudville thinking the aunt died and was leaving it to her). She finds an old residents journals in her aunts attic and checks them out, getting inspiration for her writing, learning about the little town and falling in love with it, eventually becoming the historical society founder. Along the way she falls for Stone, the hot farmer, who conveniently also likes her for her “hot body” and eventually helps her with things like caring for her aunts chickens and pig and cats, getting an intruder out of the house, fixing toilets, etc. and he helps her with a few things in the bedroom. And a cornfield haha. The only drama between them comes from the one friends comments that Stones never had a serious GF so Harper assumes it’s not serious and Stone thinks she’s moving away (which she does for two months) so they don’t confess their feelings for each other until randomly on Thanksgiving thanks for Aunt Agnes scheming. Oh, and there’s a cute part where the old library board members refuse to have romance books in the library so Stone makes Harper a free library that matches Agnes house and it’s stuffed full of romance books that all the old people take to read and then they all dance during the fall festival. Cute small town stuff, ya know?

small town charm!

I’m not usually a big fan of small town romance, but I took a chance on Kissing Books and am so glad I did! I love the name of the book but I won’t spoil it for you so you can find out what it means for yourself. Harper is a romance author and ends up house and pet sitting chickens, cats and a pet pig for her great aunt, who she doesn’t really know. She naturally meets a variety of small town locals, especially Stone, the oldest Morgan brother, a corn and beef farmer. She’s only going to be in town for a few weeks, so is their affair a short term fling or something more? And why do people keep breaking into the house to search through a bunch of old diaries that Harper has found? Stone starts off a bit grumpy but the enemies to lovers trope dissolves pretty quickly as they spend time together. So many things about this book were fun - touches of small town life, the fall festival, Harper’s life as a romance author, introducing romance novels to the locals, the pets, her new friendships, the relationship between the Morgan brothers. My only criticism would be we didn’t get a lot of background or depth of character for Harper and Stone. What was her life like before Muddville? Why write romance? She doesn’t seem to have any friends or past relationships. Why has Stone never had a serious relationship? But if you’re looking for a light, pleasant read with a hint of mystery and very likable characters, I highly recommend! I also appreciated that the book was well written and edited, with no glaring spelling or punctuation or grammar errors. Thank you for that! It’s always so insulting to read a book that feels like a rough draft that nobody went back over before publishing. This is my first book by Cat Johnson and I look forward to reading more when I’m in the mood for light and charming romance!

Harper is a romance author that has been in a rut, so when the opportunity to housesit for her great aunt comes available, she jumps on it. On her first trip to Mudville, she has a not-so-meet cute with Stone, a local farmer. Throw in a pig named Petunia, some chickens, and a few cats, and you're all set for adventure.

What I liked:
-Harper comes in and almost immediately establishes a girl gang, which I love. A lot of times, other women are written as bitchy and/or manipulative in romance novels, and this was not that. They were fun and loyal.
-There was a bit of a cozy mystery aspect to it - Harper finds the journals of a crazy old lady that once lived in town, and that inspires her romance writing.
-Safe - h not a virgin, H not a manwhore; no OM/OW drama

What I didn't like:
-A couple of things in the book came off as half-baked, like the author thought she was going to go somewhere with them, realized there wasn't much there, and abandoned ship. But the remnants are still there, leaving it with sort of a disjointed feel. For example, the old train depot and the old lady that breaks in looking for the journals because of some inane reason. It just didn't fit and could have either been left out completely or fleshed out more.
-The lack of communication between the H and h that is so prevalent in romance novels was there and it's annoying. If one the other or both of them had simply TALKED to the other person instead of assuming a whole bunch of stuff, then we wouldn't be here.

Eu gostei do livro!
