Jodi Taylor is the internationally bestselling author of the Chronicles of St Mary's series, the story of a bunch of disaster prone individuals who investigate major historical events in contemporary time. Do NOT call it time travel! She is also the author of the Time Police series - a St Mary's spinoff and gateway into the world of an all-powerful, international organisation who are NOTHING like St Mary's. Except, when they are.

Alongside these, Jodi is known for her gripping supernatural thrillers featuring Elizabeth Cage together with the enchanting Frogmorton Farm series - a fairy story for adults.

Born in Bristol and now living in Gloucester (facts both cities vigorously deny), she spent many years with her head somewhere else, much to the dismay of family, teachers and employers, before finally deciding to put all that daydreaming to good use and write a novel. Over twenty books later, she still has no idea what she wants to do when she grows up.

This is like a surreal tale that David Walliams didn't write. The cast could have been Gangsta Granny's friends. He didn't write it but Jodi Taylor did. They should collaborate. And not forget the horse, Turk, the outright star of the show.

And then they should make a film of it starring lots of old bat English actors of both sexes with cameo parts for the authors (Jodi can cough, it's almost like a neigh, good sound effects anyway and David Walliams would make a great policeman).

This review makes no sense, right? The story didn't really either, but was great fun nonetheless. Especially the horse. Listen to it free here

Another great and funny Jodi Taylor story featuring the St. Mary's team of criminally negligent and positively criminal historians.

Now including TOILET PAPER.

Need there be any further discussion?

I thought not. It is, after all, quite timely.

A bonus short story that's perhaps too short to be a true story, released by Jodi after being inspired by the recent 'toilet roll crisis' of 2020 and dedicated to the NHS.

It's a stereotypical jaunt into the lives of our St Mary's heroes and features men in tights, angry horses and a stolen Bentley. And toilet roll. I especially liked the section with our resident resistance fighters stealing loo roll for the old folks home party.

It's a snippet, free on the Author's website; it was written "to stave off boredom" and it has; but, if you're not already a Disaster Magnet, you'll be lost as to the reason it's a five-star screaming-laughter my-sides-are-sore read.

Not that one needs to be au fait with the series to love stuff like this:
"...No, this is serious. Our own supplies {of t.p.} are being requisitioned and carted off to London. Government bottoms for the use of, presumably."

"Are you sure? I'd have thought with the amount of arse-lick..."

"Max!"

"I would have thought toilet rolls would be redundant in Westminster. Just saying."

Heh. Yes. Well, the only other thing you need to know is that Markham, our resident Senior Disaster Magnet, has a Brilliant Idea and, from there, Nature takes her course.

I laughed, I really really laughed, and that is the gift that this series keeps on giving to me. This free, downloadable shortie is too much fun to pass up.

Inspired by the idiots buying toilet paper until there was none left in any store around the globe and in honour of the NHS, Jodi Taylor has penned this funny little short story.

As the title and my review's introduction suggest, it's about a toilet paper shortage, but with a twist thanks to our favourite disaster magnets from St. Mary's. Even Mrs. Partridge has a marvellous comeback (here's hoping she'll get a bigger role in future books again)! And she isn't the only "deadly old lady" here. Not to mention Max, Peterson and Markham - and especially Turk. BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Even in such a short short story we get the usual snark and hilarious shenanigans and I laughed out loud more than once.

Recommended for anyone in need of a laugh. You can read it for free here: https://joditaylor.online/blogs/news/...
(both ebook and an audio version read by the author).

Cute. I get the feeling I would have understood more had I known the characters. First St. Mary’s book. Need to correct that by reading more! 3 solid stars.

Clever and funny. I didn't grasp everything, chalked it up to British humor, and then discovered that the characters are from the author's books. Ah, perhaps I will catch up with them someday. Cheerio!

SUPER FAST REVIEW:
I’m apparently in the minority here.
So admittedly I had never heard of this series until I started listening to this audiobook, I saw some reviews come up and thought it was just some dramatic satire of some of the stupid shit happening, I didn’t think it had anything to do with something other than “motherfuckers are panicking and acting like it’s the end of the world” so some of this may be just that I’m a fuckin’ idiot.
So I didn’t care about the characters (possibly for previously mentioned reasons) and didn’t think this author was a very good narrator. The story was alright (even though I’m not sure if it will still hold up after December 31st 2020) and it is kinda humorous.
Yeah, can’t really complain as it was free and I didn’t feel like it was a bad experience but I think I may have not fully got it. Maybe I’ll try the St. Mary’s series at some point but nothing particularly makes me want to so maybe not.

Quite fun when a little 17 page jaunt can cause you to laugh 5 times at least. Hero of the story is, quite obviously, Turk, with an honorable mention to Dr. Bairstowe. Pretty sure this piece could be read at any point in the St. Mary's continuum.

‘Have you heard?’ said Peterson, bursting through Max’s door. ‘There’s a
national emergency.’
‘Oh God – what has our idiot government done this time?’

listened to this thanks to Petra, reader extraordinaire, while walking a tricolored spotted dog.
maybe i was more concerned with the kids with hair colored like tulips wandering around without masks. maybe i was more concerned with the fact that all the tulips [my fave] are already gone.
perhaps i was most focused on keeping doggo out of 'pee-bushes' or out of the clutches of the humans who want to reach out and touch doggo despite the social distancing that [some... ahem...] local leaders enforce if the governor [apoyado de una mierda anaranjada] doesn't sue them over the enforcement of such. at any rate, it was hard to stay in the story, despite the interesting reading [and coughs] by the author. there were some fun bits that reminded me of 'the master and margarita.' it seemed to end abruptly and i was lost in the horses and the loo rolls and the popo and...yup, it definitely captures the disorienting feeling hanging around us today like flies at a picnic.

i do love the idea of stealing TP. to think we used to waste it by 'tp-ing people's houses' in the 80s. clearly i've thought about it a lot after living in the u.s. then living in india, then living in the u.s.

St. Mary's and the Great Toilet Roll Crisis is absolutely ridiculous and absolutely hilarious. This extremely short story (available here) was inspired by the recent real life toilet paper crisis in America, Europe, and around the world due to a very real (and not hilarious) global pandemic.

It's another silly story featuring St. Mary's heroes, particularly Max, Peterson, and Markham, and features men in tights, a discontent horse, and a stolen Bentley. It's another one of Jodi's stories that are both unnecessary and greatly appreciated.

This was sooooo funny!

Short, sadly, but hysterically funny throughout.

Even with her short, short stories, Jodi just writes about her characters, with the essence of madcap, howlingly funny, danger-magnet, craziness.

If there's any kind of shennanigens going on, then you can be sure that there's plenty of people at St. Mary's, to join in, and make things more complicated!

So, as great as this book is, there wasn't much there to keep me occupied for long, so I'm off to book 11.2: The Girl With the Pearl in her Nose.

Once again, I'll see you on the flip side, to let you know what I think of it.

This is a free short story, read by the author, about half an hour long.

This is about the toilet paper (bog roll, toilet roll, shit tickets, what ever you prefer) that we experienced in early 2020.

It's a fun little side story, with no bearing on the overall St Mary's world, but fun.

The narration is what you'd expect from a single take from the author. It's fine, but no Zara Ramm.

This is a great little story, read or listen if you get the chance.

This is one of the in-between short stories, but, since it's too short for a normal short story, Taylor offers it as a free read on her site. It was written during lockdown, thus the title & subject idea, & dedicated to the National Health Service workers in Britain. The St. Mary's staff up to their usual tricks. Fun!

A perfect response by Jodi to our current predicament! A funny story featuring shenanigans in a good cause by our favourite disaster magnets. Written in honour of our NHS heroes and featuring a toilet paper shortage.

At St. Mary's a disaster is about to happen. There has been a National Emergency declared and all the Institutes toilet rolls are to be sent to Westminster! Will the crew of St. Mary's stand for this? Well read this short tale and find out!

Relative to the other St. Mary’s books and stories, this felt contrived. Written during the pandemic and available on the author’s blog, it is a noble attempt to thank the frontline workers. It felt like the characters were trying too hard to fit her plot line. Maybe it just needs more editing.
