Mars is a nice place…when it’s not trying to kill you.
Most spacefarers avoid Phobos Station. It is hard to get to and the locals would rather shoot you than be helpful.
Melanie Destin has agreed to a simple Identify the person who receives a container the Requiem delivers to Phobos Station.
When she learns the identity of the intended recipient, things becomes far more deadly. As the body count rises, Mel must find a way to protect her shipmates from an old nemesis with vengeance on his mind.
Mel Destin has a knack for getting out of the trouble that finds her, but has her luck finally run out on Phobos Station?

What a story. In our future, man is capable of going to the stars. Not as simple, man is still always looking to get ahead of others. Absolutely loved it. Ready for more.
Phobos Station was provided to me by the author. What follows is an original opinion.
This book picks up where Armstrong Station leaves off. Having read that book will help, but everything you need to know is provided in the story.
In our future, man has gone to the stars, but he has not changed. While many are team players, there are many who would not think twice about injecting you with nanites that need to be fed to keep them from killing you, all so that you can be controlled. The good people seem to be better, and the evil people worse.
Melanie Destin comes into the situation trying to save a young woman who has the nanites in her, ones she was injected with so that she would be forced into prostitution. She will come face to face with the person behind this, one of the most evil men she has ever met. She will also learn what it means to be a team player, and what family means.
My only problem is Mel is the future star of the 'Mother of Mars' series. Because of that we can assume she will survive. It is kind of like watching Star Wars I, II, and III. We know Anakin is going to live, it is just how is he going to turn. Still, it does have its moments where we think maybe we got it wrong.
There is marginal violence in the book, the amount needed to move a story along. Mel also seems to have a bit of a potty mouth dropping the f bomb a lot. I see it as necessary character essential but she does seem to do a lot less of it in future stories of her. Maybe it is where she is at in this time of life. I think the author may have cleaned things up a bit. For those two reasons, I can not recommend this for pre-teens and on the age of YA readers. Still the story is good, and has enough twists and turns to keep you guessing who all the players are.
Bottom line, the future is dangerous, and Mel is there to help.
Mel Destin is a doctor who in order to get off the moon takes a job as a ship’s doctor on board the good ship Requiem under the command of Captain Chambers. Somehow she manages to keep getting herself and the crew of the Requiem into some really dicey situations. This, the second in the series Requiem’s Run, finds them on the trail of Chambers sister, Nan Chambers, who has been kidnapped. A passenger, Chloe Cabot, who has become part of the crew knew her under a different name and she and Nan had been traveling together when they both were kidnapped. Making things even more interesting are the nanites that are in Chloe Cabot will kill her if she doesn’t get a shot to tame every few days as the result of being a captive of an acquaintance of Mel who she met while dealing some meds that are used to keep other captives healthy. Both Chloe and Captain Davenport want to find and free Nan, but for different reasons. Chloe is rich and is financing the mission to rescue Nan. It starts as a simple mission to for to Phobos Station on one of the moons that circle Mars to locate Nan, free her, then fly away from Phobos. As with most things Mel gets involved with it goes from simple to horribly wrong. This another one of those books that will keep you turning pages to see how one problem and situation gets solved and then dumps you into the next one. It is good Mel has the backing of the captain and the crew of the Requiem. Without it things would get even worse and if possible, even more complicated.
Continuing on the prequel adventures of Melanie Destin, Phobos Station is yet another excellent read from the pen of D.M. Pruden. Mel is a multifaceted character and it's really easy to identify with her. Sure, sometimes you'd start to wonder what more could go wrong! But, she's highly intelligent, dedicated and resourceful. Her shipmates on the Requiem are equally easy to identify with and you feel like you could join them all and call them friends. Mel clearly has her demons but that's part of the appeal. It makes her believable. As always, the dialogue is excellent and the world building is right up there too. It's really easy to picture the ship, her crew and the other characters, along with the other sites included in the book. The pacing is great, and it's the kind of book you just can't put down. I highly recommend this series and the author's other works.
I received a copy of the book from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review.
Received as an ARC, this is an honest review. What begins for Mel with a humorous effort to make toast dissolves into into an unexpected adventure for the the crew of the Requiem. To seek important information about Chambers sister Nancy takes the crew to Terra and a past Mel would rather forget. Mel also has the mystery of the nannites affecting Chloe all the while still chasing after Willis to get what Chloe needs to survive. Unfortunately, Mel finds herself involved with again powerful organizations, dead Martian agents and her own secrets that could cost her crew and Chloe's own life. It's also the secrets she'll learn that will have profound changes for the future. An excellent sequel to a highly adventurous series, highly recommended.
Oh, I love Mel books. Such a great character! Flawed, snarky, yet so identifiable with. Or shouldn't I say that? This second book in the series is more of the same - great characters, good plot and with a lightness of touch. Some of us know Mel from a previous series set in her future, and in these books we see how some of her character was formed. Well, and they are great stories too, and I look forward to the next one!
This is the second book in the Requiem’s Run series. The author continues to build out the personality and motivations of Melanie Destin, the main character. The main story arc is interesting and has a few other minor threads going on which help to build the characters we’re reading about. I enjoyed the book and purchased book #3 Rhea’s Vault.
