Right?

This is an early science/nature story written to engage young children and encourage them to explore the world around them. This book is an excellent resource for preschool, kindergarten, and early elementary students, for parents and teachers alike. Ideal for ages 3 to 8.
Hello! I’m a children's author, an aspiring naturalist, and a science illustrator with a passion for exploring nature through picture books.
I've been writing stories since middle school, but I swapped to writing for kids when my oldest was a toddler. That's when I ran out of time to read fantasy novels and started reading hundreds and thousands of picture books instead. Eventually, my oldest asked me a question about eggs, and I decided to answer it with a picture book.
As an artist and an author, I love sharing science and nature through picture books.

With spring here and trees budding, this is a perfect time to share this delightful book with little ones. It goes through different colors and shows what tree is each color. The repeating question format will be fun for children to anticipate and repeat. The author/illustrator did a marvelous job at creating realistic pictures so people will recognize the trees when they encounter them. Here you have an entertaining book with science included. Great for this time of staying at home.
Informative text answering the title question. Sauble includes illustrations that show readers leaf colors for a wide variety of trees. The last tree shown is the blue spruce which is, indeed, blue. Simple to read text for elementary level readers. Fun read aloud for families. Several additional activities are included at the end of the book.
Audrey Sauble’s Can a Tree Be Blue? is a gentle, lyrical exploration of nature’s wonders that invites young readers to look beyond what they expect to see. What begins as a simple question—can a tree be blue?—unfolds into a journey through the changing colors of leaves, the play of light, and the beauty of imagination.
Each page offers a blend of science and wonder. Sauble introduces children to real-world facts about trees and colors while encouraging creative thinking and open-ended questioning. The text flows rhythmically, making it ideal for read-aloud sessions at home or in the classroom, where little ones can pause to predict, discuss, or share their own ideas about what trees—and the world around them—can be.
Visually, the book is a treat. The soft, natural palette paired with bursts of unexpected hues creates an atmosphere that’s both calming and stimulating. It encourages children to observe the world more closely, noticing how seasons, light, and perspective change the way we see familiar things.
At its heart, Can a Tree Be Blue? is about curiosity—about seeing beyond what “is” and imagining what “could be.” It’s a perfect pick for families and educators who value books that spark both learning and creativity.
Can a Tree Be Blue? is a book about trees and nature as we get to see all different varieties of trees and the colours they are.
This is a book unlike any we have seen before. It was not all of the children's taste in book but it is very interesting and filled with facts about different kinds of trees, some I hadn't heard of before.
The illustrations are lovely and detailed with each page having one tree on and a coloured word to represent the colour of the tree. I like how colours were included in this book as it is a great way for the children to think and learn about colours without realising they are doing so.
Nearer the end of the book we loved the insects to look for and checklist of what the children can look for outside. This is nice as it keeps them interested and learning even once the book has finished. This is a lovely book that has lots to learn and is perfect for any children who love nature and the outdoors.
This book has realistic pictures and a friendly tone that encourages kids to look more closely at trees and nature. There’s a search for hidden insects that will have kids poring over the pictures, and suggestions for a nature scavenger hunt. My only complaint is that some of the trees do not grow in my region so are not familiar to our local kids. It would be nice to have different versions for different regions!
Beautiful illustrations in this book geared toward lower age elementary children. It talks about the colors of different trees throughout the year. It has a list of bugs in the back of the book to find hiding throughout the book. It also gives a great scavenger hunt list at the back of the book to do with an adult. This would make a great book for schools as well as families.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this delightful little book. The illustrations are apt and definitive and the info source is purposefully balanced. It has the pleasure of storyboarding at the same time as teaching us a fun nature lesson. This part of a valued series I hope.
Kids can learn some of their colors by the color of leaves. I love the scavenger hunt list in the back and the bugs to look for in the pages. Very cute book for the little nature lovers.
My grandson says this book is awesome. He's excited to know Audrey Sauble also wrote the Rocket that Flew to Mars, and the Bug book, which he also "really likes". Excited to see what comes next!
great illustrations, well done, i love trees ...so pretty ... always enjoy the weeping willow ...but pine trees any sort is great. so amazing. love all the colors ... really enjoy them in the fall ... great learning book ... well done!!
Lovely illustration, simple to read and so easy to curl up with. We will revisit this book again and again as we learn about, and discuss, trees and nature. Highly recommend.
This book is very informative. I love all the trees. Children can see the leaves and learn to identify. The interaction throughout can be excellent but at the end there are pages to add to this.
Playful and informative book on trees, suitable for preschoolers and elementary school kids. Goes through several concepts: leafy trees and conifers, seasons, colors, common insects. Illustrations sweet and bright.
This was a cute and educational read. My kids had a good time trying to guess what colors the trees would be and if there could be a blue one. They were shocked to learn about the (spoiler alert...) BLUE SPRUCE! Super cute.
Such a fun book to explore different colors while learning about trees and nature! The added activities and scavenger hunt at the end make this a great book for both traditional and outdoor classrooms, homeschoolers, and all young explorers!
I kept thinking to myself “hmm which one is blue?” And anticipating if we would ever get to a blue tree. I love how the author explores, colors, seasons, and shapes throughout the book in a fun and entertaining way. And I learned about a blue tree!
This is an excellent book for children to learn about colours and about trees and insects as well. It also covers the four different seasons. I enjoyed reading it and seeing the detail of the leaves illustrated by the author, Audrey. I learnt some things myself, I should add.
Not only is this a beautifully illustrated book, it’s highly educational. Children will recognize many of the trees discussed—depending where they live—and will enjoy learning about others. Adding to the fun is a bug hunt.
Very nice story about trees. Great teaching story all ages, I learned something I didn’t know. Love the educational aspect good read and very informative
We loved how engaging this book was. The question helped guide the reader through the book and introduce all sorts of trees. My kids also loved the detailed pictures.
