There you are, holding her hand / I am lost, dying to understand / Didn't I cherish you right? / Don't you know you were my life? (Can’t Let Go – Mariah Carey).

Every month can be Pride when all you read are gay things! Or at least, that's been my mantra ever since I've escaped the sheltered life of The City of Ember where I was strictly reading John Green YA to understanding that there's a vast world of books out there that are actually good. Woah, it's a whole new world out here, look at all that green! And you know what? March in particular will be like the 0.5 Pride month for me simply because the apparent finale to Max Caulfield and Chloe Price’s story in the game, Life is Strange: Reunion, is coming out at the end of the month and I can’t wait. And look, I know I’m starting to sound like a shameless money hungry YouTuber right now, all out here shilling “this video is sponsored by Squarespace”, "become a member on my channel" or whatever, but I really am super excited. It’s nice to look forward to things, and since both Marvel and Star Wars have both diluted their brand to the point where everything they put out is either the worst thing you've ever seen to mid at best, I have to find that long lost spark of enjoyment somewhere! It's like I'm living in The City of Ember and we're quickly running out of light bulbs! Otherwise, I’m also looking forward to that new Fable reboot game coming out later this year because I loved those games back in the day... and weirdos are calling it “woke” in a derisive way, so I just know I’ll love it! But since we’re on the topic of things I love, I love these games because it takes things back to the basics of storytelling, where we either get a good romance or a good mystery (often both), and also because they’re a hell of a lot more relaxing than Overwatch, where your tank is typing an essay the whole match and topping it all off by spamming “gg no healing” at the end of the game when the back line healers were getting dove right and left by the enemy Sombra… nope, instead of all that drama, with Life is Strange I can just focus on the story at hand and deciding what course of action is best for Max Caulfield. No really, one of the unfortunate parts about reading a story featuring a character who you’re used to having some level of control over (Life is Strange are choice-based video games) is that the story will always have some level of “wait that’s not what my version of Max would do!”, and I’ve got to say that while I know I’m the odd one out here, it’s strange (heh heh) how most everyone interprets Max to be some kind of selfless hero, of which I take umbrage with the "selfless" bit. Sure, she’s still a hero by all metrics, but I guess what I’m trying to say is a lot of what’s going on in Strings isn’t what my version of Max Caulfield would do!

This is the same chick who could and would sacrifice an entire town full of people she's known her entire life just to go on a gay road trip with her blue-haired girlfriend! My Max Caulfield has never been a martyr! She’s the kind of person who would put off using her time traveling powers for over a decade because of the harm it has caused to the people around her, but the second her friend is in danger, she’d dust off the good old super suit without a second thought! But really though, it’s funny because at the end of each chapter in the games, we get a list of what everybody chose for several different major and minor decisions throughout the episode, and I’m always surprised at how many people like to choose the “selfless” actions!? I guess that's on me because my natural inclination is towards self-serving actions, but I'm so used to stories going all "Jesus complex" by forcing the main character to make the "morally good" decision even when such actions don't fit the narrative at all, so it's cathartic for me to play Life is Strange and not have to act like a saint all the time. Also, for these games in particular, I’ve always thought that the text supported a more self-centered version of Max. For one, in the first game we see an alternate reality Max where she had never left for Seattle and she basically becomes a "Mean Girls" plastic part of the popular clique at Blackwell Academy. Again, she's still not a bad person, but can easily fall on either side of the train tracks. Then there’s the fact that she doesn’t ever try to pull a Patrick Swayze, Ghost, maneuver by getting useful advice from some dead weirdo in a subway station on how to control her powers, but instead dives headfirst in abusing the hell out of her new reality bending powers! Let's see, what else? Oh yeah, when she becomes a resident teacher in Double Exposure, there's an ease uncharacteristic to a "doe-eyed Disney Princess" when she gleefully changes a clout chasing podcaster student’s grade from a “B” to a “B-” like that one scene in Freaky Friday. Which is fair enough, podcasters are second to only Twitch streamers in being the bane of society, but my point is that there's an interesting disconnect between the character on the page versus the image of Max in the collective fandom's mind. Because trust me, this is all just the tip of the iceberg, She’s done worse! …That billboard!! You think a man just happens to fall like that!? No, she orchestrated it, Max! Oops, sorry about that, I default to quoting Chuck McGill from Better Call Saul whenever I’m talking at length about a person's character. Really though, even if my interpretation of her wasn’t supported, I love Max’s selfish tendencies, they're a good thing! They make her more layered and textured in a way that adds a fascinating dichotomy to her “cute as a button” persona that would have otherwise been boring had it been played straight.

“Max Caulfield. So cool that even her normal is off-brand.”
“What’s normal anyway?”
“Truth.”

I know I'm stuck on this, but there’s something incredibly funny when the game will give you a choice between saving or abandoning the corrupt cop who’s been hounding and racially profiling Max’s friend and fellow teacher the entire game, and I’m just like, is this even a choice? Bye bye officer Krupke, Krup you! And like I said, I suppose I’m a hipster even by Life is Strange standards because apparently everybody else decided to save the racist creep for some reason (like 70% according to the game’s stats)!? Hey, what's that about? Let his ass disappear like the image from Back to the Future, I honestly couldn't give less of a shit. I mean, the point of choice based stories is that any and all decisions made throughout the story are technically in character for the protagonist, but I would like to see the more selfish side of Max show up in external media without my input simply because she's more entertaining that way. Besides, I can’t completely shake the feeling that reading through these Life is Strange graphic novels is kind of like watching all your favorite characters being watered down their most well-known personality traits. Don’t get me wrong, Max having a guilt complex or Chloe being a supportive girlfriend despite all kinds of world-ending odds are both major parts of what makes these characters so unique in the first place, but these things aren't all they are! A lot of what this comic misses is the day-to-day humor and charming dialogue that do the work in giving us the impression that these people actually enjoy each other’s company! Sure, Max and Chloe are obviously in love, that much is clear, but do they like each other? When the world isn’t ending, are they laughing at each other’s jokes or just hanging out doing nothing? These aspects of their relationship are readily apparent in the Life is Strange video games, but I have yet to see their multi-dimensional connection that transcends space in the text proper. When you have a story about time altering, dimensional warping powers, the best thing for the narrative is to center back around on the mundane. It's like Ke Huy Quan said, "In another life, I would have really liked... just doing laundry and taxes with you", that's where the good stuff is! What I've always liked about Life is Strange is that even though it features characters with superpowers, it never feels like it's a superhero story. Every character is a normal person, and Max's abilities are inconsequential to her relationships with the people around her. And while I still really enjoyed Strings, I wish it had slowed the story down a little bit and showed us why we should care about the relationships between Max and Chloe… or even Chloe and Rachel Amber. Oh boy, don’t even get me started on their relationship!

It’s odd with just how many of the writers in charge of the larger Life is Strange universe seem to love the idea that Chloe and Rachel were soulmates for some reason. I don’t get it! The state of their relationship is left ambiguous on purpose, but my understanding is that Chloe and Rachel were together when they were in high school (as shown in Before the Storm), but had broken up by the time the first game came rolling around because Rachel wanted to be off chasing the dream of becoming an actress MaXXXine style and in smaller part due to Chloe’s jealous and controlling nature, so why do we keep pretending like they could have had this picture perfect relationship had things worked out differently? Besides, the first Life is Strange game shows that Rachel was secretly in a relationship with some weed dealer (which Chloe gets pissed about, but doesn't feel betrayed), meaning that if they were still together, then Rachel had cheated on Chloe? Not that that's not realistic, but it's hardly the love story of the ages, now is it? I mean, I guess you could say that by Strings they aren’t teenagers in love anymore and that they’ve both matured a lot since their rebellious phase… but come on now, Chloe Price growing up? Be for real. Don’t get me wrong, I like how jealousy is a core aspect of her character! That’s what I’ve been saying this entire time, I don’t want to read about the best version of these characters, I want the ones that I was introduced to; flaws and all. And all that besides, even though Rachel Amber is alive in this timeline, I thought it was odd how she didn't seem to be an aspiring actress anymore, instead she was, like, and streamer or something. She even gets big off of covering Max’s heroic time travel exploits, and no offense to the people who love this character, but this didn’t do much to dispel the interpretation that she’s a clout chaser above all. Trading in your dream to become to become an off-brand Tati Westbrook influencer? Now that’s a fate worse than death! Anyway, I feel I’ve come across as a lot more negative than I was intending to when I started talking about this comic, so let me just set the record straight (and that’s going to be the only straight thing about this review), I still really loved Strings! Beautiful art as always, a story that fits the style of the games without being too much of a departure from the familiar, and just being an all around good time, seriously, I really couldn't recommend this enough. And even though the hardcore focus on the more good-natured aspects to these characters was a bit of hindrance to me, I’m well aware that I’m unusual in my need for seeing the worst parts of our favorite characters. I don’t know, blame it on my wretched heart.

Even though I try, I can't let go / Something in your eyes captured my soul / And every night I see you in my dreams / You're all I know, I can't let go.

It's hard to think of things to say about this book that aren't just me repeating what I said about the first two. It remains a really charming and likable followup to the game. Plot-wise this one is mostly setup for the next arc, but it has a lot of quiet character moments that make up for that.
My favourite moment was a quiet conversation between Chloe and Max that soon turned into a surprisingly touching defense of the selfie; a pure piece of self expression, filtered through no one but the subject themselves, frozen in time.

Alright, I'm invested now. Reasonably well written and beautifully illustrated. It really feels like a continuation of the video game but also a story with significance in it's own right. I hope this series continues until completion, because I really do love these characters!

This is the spoiler free review of Volumes 1-3 of Life is Strange. If you would like to read the spoiler full review complete with more choices and cliffhangers please visit https://amanjareads.com/2021/01/27/li...

Life is Strange the graphic novel is a true sequel to Life is Strange the video game. I strongly recommend that you play the video game and the prequel Life is Strange: Before the Storm before you read this graphic novel.

I strongly recommend that you play these video games just in general. They're fantastic. You'll follow the stories of Max, Chloe, and Rachel as they navigate small town Arcadia Bay in their final years of high school. The twist is that there are time manipulation powers involved and the consequences of the butterfly effect are in full force.

Without the background knowledge gained through the games I doubt this book will have the same emotional impact. You have to know these young women, who they are, how they relate to each other, and what their place within this society is. The book, unfortunately, does not offer that.

It is strongly assumed that you know what Life is Strange is about before you start reading. This graphic novel is not a companion piece or side story, it picks up exactly where the game leaves off.

For fans of the game, this will be great. You'll enjoy following Max and Chloe and yes even Rachel as they face new challenges and strengthen the bonds of their relationships. The art style stays true to the source material and the heart of it all remains intact.

So far, three full volumes have been published. But the third one ends on a major cliffhanger so I'm going to have to read the rest as they come out. Thankfully, they're still being produced for the time being. Hopefully this doesn't turn into yet another unfinished series.

If you're already a fan of the Life is Strange franchise then I strongly recommend this book. If you're not, this is not the place to start. Do yourself a favor and enjoy the games first. Play the prequel first even though it didn't come out first, trust me on this one.

Pretty solid volume once again! This time around Max is trying to get back to her own universe, to her Cloe and the gang is trying to help her do that. The writing and art are just as good as it's always been!

The only real gripe I have is that the story has no real resolution here as this run is ending and they're reverting back to #1 with the new partners in time series. What annoys me is that it's the same creative team and the same story continuing, so why go back #1 when you can just continue with #13? It's not really a gripe I have with this series particularly but the industry as a whole who just revert back to #1's because they think it will magically sell more copies. I will collect the new series but just know that the arc doesn't really end with this volume and you're pretty much going to have to collect the new run if you want to see how it all ends.

"Strings" was great, a good follow-up to "Waves".
For some reason, I was expecting "Strings" to finish the overall arch of the comics so far. Maybe because of that, "Strings" felt a bit anti-climatic, or more like a setup for the next story. Either way, this has still been a great mini-arch (like all "Life is Strange" comics so far!) and I can't wait to read the next story.

(This refers to the single issues #9-12 since the collected edition hasn't come out yet).

Another enjoyable volume. I think it harkens back to the quality of the first one again. We have a lot of sit down with Max, as she finally confesses her truth about her timeline and powers to this reality's Chloe and Rachel.

This confession leads to an excellent focus on dealing with Chloe and Rachel, as they both process the existence of alternative realities. I really like the angle they're going with Rachel, as she has to grapple with the knowledge of her alternate-timeline death; I think it makes a lot of sense for her character.

Max and Tristan begin working together to try and find a way back home for Max, using Tristan's ability to phase into the transect. He also gets some solid development and he's less weird this time around.

Overall good plotting in this one, as Max's resolve to find her original Chloe leads to the setup of a road trip to follow her original Chloe's band, The High Seas. Though the ending feels more cliffhanger than ending, it sets up an exciting plotlines going forward.

Well, I did say this volume would define the direction for the overall story and it looks it's back to square one. I will admit the opening panels of Volume 3 were slightly disappointing. Think about that scene from your favourite TV show when the protagonist is about to make some drastic revelation saying something like, "Guys, there's something I need to tell you," and you know exactly what he or she's about to say 'cause you've been anticipating it for several episodes now, the episode fades to black and-! Next thing we know all the characters have been filled in on the drastic reveal. Yeah, I know, it would probably be difficult to explain it, not to mention it'd take way too many panels in a comic, but I'd have liked to see them try. It's all about the reaction!

No spoilers here seeing as it's the comic preview.

With Max finally fessing up, you would've thought that'd be the end of it but Tristan decides his "disengage" ability now extends to slipping between alternate realities, what does not line up with what we were told in the previous volume. Furthermore, there's another event in the graphic novel where something happens to Chloe that also doesn't make sense given what we know about Max's powers, and I'm not a fan of rewriting the rules of the game while you're playing it. Anyway, now we know why Tristan was introduced: to help Max return to her Chloe. You see, Max now has this idea that the reason why she left her reality at the end of Volume 1 was because she was trying to escape the consequences of her actions.

On a superficial level that's incorrect, as we were told she was being pushed-pulled out of her reality by a metaphorical storm of flickers, suggesting she didn't belong there (what I didn't much buy but whatever). On a deeper level, it's utterly wrong, as the event that precipitated this entire series is precisely Max's choice to stop ab/using her powers and facing the consequences of her actions. If anything, it's the other ending the one that nullifies all of Max's choices throughout the game, further reinforcing the notion that Max can make things right if only she would use her powers one last time. I drew a similar comparison to the Flash's ability to travel in time in another post, and how he initially thinks he can just go back in time to right his wrongs until another speedster tells him to live with it.

The entirety of Volume 3 focuses on these two revelations and whether Max will act on Tristan's upgraded ability to try and get back to her Chloe. While Rachel admits she was uncomfortable, maybe slightly jealous, about Max's return to Chloe's life, that was before she knew this Max was in a relationship with Chloe in the other reality. That would probably make me pause and give some thought to current living arrangements, no? But Rachel takes it all in stride, reacting far better than I would've expected her to given the circumstances. Come to think of it, what happened to the Max of Chloe and Rachel's reality when the other Max appeared? I would love to know the answer to that question but I fear it may be underwhelming. Beware what you wish for, right?

By this point, you'd think I'd be tempted to give Volume 3 a low rating but that would be decidedly unfair. The art continues to be pretty good, for my tastes anyway, and the story's keeping me entertained with its twists and turns, despite how unjustified some of them may be. And Claudia Leonardi did sneak a Remember Me (DONTNOD's first game and one of my favourites) easter egg into the art, so there's that, not to mention we finally have a sense of the series' endgame. All in all I'm willing to give this volume a pass with another 3/5 rating, although maybe I should be a little harsher considering these past two volumes appear to have been an unnecessary detour.

As always, we shalt see. I can always take out stars in the final volume. Muahahaha!

Just as great as the previous two volumes. Strings has set up some really interesting plot threads for the next volume, and there's much to look forward to. The cliffhanger was particularly mean, but the upcoming road trip with the trio should be fun to get into. This comic series has delivered on every front so far, and as a Life is Strange fan, I'm happy.

Fazit: Die Geschichte gewinnt deutlich Schwung. Der Aufbau eines großen Projekts beginnt. Gesamt: 5/5

So I've just finished the first series of the comic book. And I can't say I love it. The level of writing reminded me of my favourite childhood series called W.i.t.c.h. which was great for a 10 years old child. Life is strange was supposed to be coming of age story.

What really irritated me the most is how helpless Max seem to be in this series. And how her new powers are unrelated to the game.

What I liked though is how much Rachel and Chloe characters improved. They are much more sympathetic.

I appreciate how this series expands and builds upon the structures of the game as well as the previous volumes. I inhaled all of these over the course of a day, and I found myself just as emotionally struck as I was playing the game, which is a feat!
