Socially anxious high school student Shoko Komi’s greatest dream is to make some friends, but everyone at school mistakes her crippling social anxiety for cool reserve. Luckily she meets Tadano, a timid wallflower who decides to step out of his comfort zone in order to help her achieve her goal of making 100 friends.

Komi and her friends had an eventful culture festival, so Najimi suggests that they all go to karaoke to finish off the day with a song. Komi loves hanging out with everyone, but the stress of worrying about singing in front of them is threatening to ruin the whole outing for her. Can Komi find a way to overcome her fear, or will karaoke end in misery?

I liked this volume more than the previous two. So the culture festival is over, so they all go out to karaoke, perfect for someone like Komi with a communication disorder, and her wallflower friend Tadano! What can go wrong. This volume also introduces us to a new "bad boy" character, Makoto Katai, nothing like Tadano and Komi, on the surface, but it turns out he also has social anxiety. When the three of them are together (not) talking, it's pretty funny. So this new situation is intriguing.

And Tadano and Komi get some time together, though neither will talk to each other, really, so how can a possible romance advance??!

Two great scenes: The cat cafe! And (communication disordered) Komi's Dad goes shopping with Komi. Very funny.

Komi is super popular despite her aloof reputation. Only timid Tadano seems to notice that she doesn't talk... ever! When she reaches out to him on the first day of class he quickly realizes it's awkwardness holding her back. Now he'll become her first friend in her quest to make 100 friends.

I really like Najime, they are super funny and push Komi to do new things. BUT I’m glad they weren’t as dominating in this volume. They are present but other characters get to shine. A new guy Katai shows up and he’s easily misunderstood because of the way he looks. Basically he’s a male Komi and picks up right away that he wants to be Tadano’s friend. He also latched onto Komi in a unique and funny way. Katai may be my favorite friend after Tadano.

I loved all the different ways Komi and Tadano interacted in this volume. Tadano is an amazing friend, thinking about what’s best for Komi. But he’s having other thoughts about Komi and it freaks him out some. With good reason as she’s gorgeous and so sweet too. He takes a big step though this volume and I loved it.

There are also some funny moments with the boys in their class that had me rolling. These also really helped me separate who some of the girl friends are and their names. Komi Can’t Communicate is a super funny series with a fun high school romance and commentary on what it means to be popular. I highly recommend it, especially this volume which is taking the series to a great place.

I'm going to round up to three stars again because the slow-boil romance is cute, but the storyline with a misunderstood new classmate who everyone perceives as a dangerous thug was boring, lacking humor, originality, and energy. Thank goodness for the stories about Komi and her father and Komi's experience at a cat cafe.

I've been reading this as a daily meditation, small communications at a time. God it's heartwarming, and as a queer adult in their 30s who never really got to have the sorts of experiences they needed in highschool, it does something special for me. The content is still fantastic, there are new friends, new scenarios, and a black cat named Chocolat who made me cry.

Rounding up to 4 because there were some really funny parts in this volume.

Male delinquent Komi really had me giggling. I'd like a series about him lol.

Mea Culpa.

This reviewer made that short sighted assertion that peak Komi already occurred in a review of the previous volume. Volume 5 contained in whole the multi-part cultural festival which was my favorite story arc. However, the best Komi stories has always been standalone, and this volume contains a return to those roots.

This volume contained a lot of firsts for Komi; karaoke with friends, the Komi fans club fantasy dates, cat cafe with Chocolate, and shopping with her communication-challenged father (the Komi apple did not fall far from the tree).

One could never go wrong with a Komi volume.

Cat Cafes and Shopping!

This volume is probably my favorite so far. This series is pure fluff, and thus time there were cats which made it even better.

I would read a spin off of just those cats in the cat cafe reacting to Komi. Too cute!

And the imagined little vignettes from the boys in class? Adorable. I would read more of those too.

This volume was another memorable one. This one was memorable because I found this one be the most humorous. The scenes with the new character Makoto were quite funny. Although, that's the only new character I remember. So there still aren't very many new things going on. I guess I'll give this one three and a half stars.

27/06/2022: 3 stars. I don't expect superiority from a series like this, but still.

I don't like reading about boys' fantasies, high school boys are (again) weird as fuck. I just want to get away from them, except for the fact that I used to be one of them (ugh, the cringe).

I also don't like the trajectory that this series is heading. Yeah, I think most people are rooting for Komi x Tadano to be a thing. But them being friends will prove to be a bigger message, and also align with the theme of this series. I get what the fans want, I just don't like that.

Think this series is running out of gags. I gave it six volumes but it is very predictable and not going anywhere.
