Loved this collection of musings and anecdotes. Laughed out loud reading a book after an eon. Day to day things and events that happens to all of us told in an endearingly funny way. I liked the play with words , though the exaggeration was a tad too more than needed in some places.
Would happily recommend this to all.

Thanks Deepika Booksy for suggesting it.

Hilarious ride! I wonder whether the author writes a column in newspaper or magazine. Reading one article in a set frequency will definitely lift the mood :)

Meh. Not all that funny. Actually, not funny at all. The humour seems forced at most points. Gender stereotypes are reinforced in every other chapter.

As someone who genuinely believes in finding humour in the everyday things life has to offer, even I'll admit that not EVERYTHING is good for for comedy. The situations are relatable but overdone. I don't think losing a rubber band in the kitchen while cooking (with the lingering doubt that it may have fallen into the food) is really worth writing about.

I think it paints a good enough picture to say that I had free access to this book (thanks to kindle unlimited) but STILL didn't find it worth my time to plough through the whole of it. I've abandoned it just before the one- third mark, and my only reaction to this decision is a small spark of pride in my ability to finally start letting go of any book that doesn't actually give me joy/ add value / contain beauty.

Let me confess. I am that guy on whose jokes nobody laughs. Be it in school or in college, or even at work, not many people break into a guffaw when I utter, what I consider to be, wisecracks. On the contrary, there were always some backbenchers - or junior staff members now - who made people around fold up with laughter, by uttering simple grunts and groans. Naturally, I have always envied people with such astonishing sense of humor. As I grew up, I understood the most important trick of making people laugh – never trying to make them laugh. Good humor is based on spontaneity and smartness. While I assumed that I had the smartness, I was never spontaneous. I always tried to make my jokes smart and sharp, ending up sounding incomprehensible in the process.

For example, read this joke and tell me how quickly you understood it – ‘There were two retired professors sitting in lawn, sipping tea and discussing things. One of them asked the other ‘Have you read Marx?’ The other one promptly responded ‘Yeah, it’s these pesky wicker chairs’. It took me a couple of minutes to understand this joke, but as the sheer smartness of the joke became clear, the joke got etched on my mind. While such ultra-smart jokes are fun to feel, they don’t tickle you at once and make you roll on the floor. Spontaneity is what produces such end results. Very few people exhibit such a perfect blend of smartness and spontaneity – to make people laugh with jokes that stick to the heart. Ms. Khyrunnisa is one such a blessed writer.

Blessed with perfect command over language and a keen eye for the innate quirks of human minds, the author has beautifully documented all those tickle-worthy moments of our day-to-day lives. From simple household chores to showy weddings, health fads to age-related ailments, silly fetishes to serious mishaps, there are so many things that we go through on a daily basis, blinkered and blind to our idiosyncrasies. This book will make one stop and think about similar incidents in one’s own life and smile in hindsight. I loved how the author repeatedly keeps pulling the mickey out of herself and her own family members. Even while documenting the hilarity hidden in the acts/thoughts of the people around her, she makes us laugh, without exactly making them the laughing stock.

In a world that is increasingly feasting on silly, senseless, scatological ‘jokes’ and sexual innuendos, her style of writing, steeped in subtle, sensible, decent wit all through, feels like a breath of fresh air. Her style of alluding to things past and present, historical and everything else, wordplay and funny flow all remind me of Albert Uderzo and Rene Goscinny, famed creators of my favorite Asterix and Obelix comic series.

You may not ‘LOL’ at the end of every other sentence, but the genuine hilarity of these tales is guaranteed to give you a lightened mind and some hearty laughter. Tongue-in-Cheek is cheeky indeed!

Naah, Didn’t work for me!

The book tries too hard to sound funny. It is kinda like a friend in school who tries to tell us tales about routine stuff that happens with them and they think they are making it sound so funny. But they are not! And you can do nothing else but look at them with a blank face waiting for them to stop talking. That is how I felt while reading this book. I kept checking the page number again and again to see when will it get over!

Didn’t even bring a smile to my face, let alone a chuckle and I kept waiting for it to end so that I could make better use of my reading time and energy!

I guess I am not cut out for such humour. Sorry!

More than calling these stories, we should call these anecdotes. In fact some are so short that if you pop in a candy in your mouth and start this anecdote, and keep sucking on the candy vigorously you'd still be left alone with your candy having finished the 'story' first. This both works in favour and also against it. Good thing is it is so short that you can read one when you go for a leak break. The thing that works against it is, after reading one, which feels like sampling a small homemade chocolate, you might want to read another, but the next one would be of a different theme, only common thread being the author. Although she did try and group them to maintain some semblance of a common motif. You're advised to wait for a while, after reading a story, since you can enjoy not just the delectable story but also that nice after taste that can linger for a while making you think of a similar situation you faced. For that reason this is not a book in which two stories are not to be read back to back immediately, and that's where the smaller length of each makes one very hungry for more.

Nevertheless most anecdotes will elicit a small knowing smile from you. You might be able to relate to a lot of them. A very enjoyable read. Must definitely try.

There are two types of books. First, the ones that take some time (at times half the book) for someone to actually start enjoying it. And the second, the book does absolutely nothing but you realise you can't part with it right from the first paragraph.

Tongue in Cheek falls into the latter category. I just had to read one paragraph to keep all my chores aside to sit down and enjoy the book. Listen, we all need a good laugh every often and this book offers exactly that. Written by an academic and a columnist, Khyrunnisa, the stories from this collection are all based on her experience. They're incredibly funny and no, it's not just the grinning-at-the-pages-type of funny but laugh-out-loud kind of funny.

She records her everyday happenings with a tonne of humour and wit, with her husband making a regular appearance in most of them. The stories are not something fancy but something that somehow every Indian would have inevitably faced one day or the other. And honestly, I think it's incredibly tough to make something as common as this to work so well. Take a bow, Khyrunnisa. You made an impossibly difficult task of making me laugh like a piece of cake!

Please go read this. We all need a bit of sunshine and laughter. Let this be both 💛

This is a collection of 51 short stories which is all about the author in different situations. Such a hilarious ride. I read 3 or 4 stories in a day and was laughing throughout. All my close friends are from Kerala and so I was relating each and every story with my funny moments with them🤣 I loved this book. Her style of writing 😍 .. Trust me and pick this book... This will just make your day. And another important thing because of which you should pick this book is, the author of this book is the creator of a famous comic character "Butterfingers". Yeah, when I read about the author, I know I will love this book. It's a short read. So read it and let me know how you liked it😍

The witty side of a Keralite woman's observations about daily life & the people she encounter - A light hearted read. 💫

BOOK: Tongue in Cheek
AUTHOR: @akhyrunnisa
GENRE: #satire #dailylife #observations
RATING : 3.9 🌟

📖 As the title suggests, it was an ironic way of narration.

📖 Her language, observations of daily life and thought process is wonderful to read & often relatable.

📖 The comedies of a family life, the rappo between each member is relatable as I am from a keralite family.

A good writer needs to be a good obersever.

"I would like to alter that to ‘men can drive but won’t ask for directions.’ This is strictly based on home experience, but my friends assure me their spouses are no different."

The colleague sitting in the seat adjacent to me got alarmed and held my hand saying 'are you alright'? I asked, 'of course, why?' He reverted 'Your chest was heaving, all the flab around waist was going up and down and narrowing your eyes as well, you got me worried if post-covid symptoms were like this.'. Blame it on the 'manhoos' mask ! Hiding all the facial expressions, the colleague didn't know I was laughing while suppressing the sounds, as I was in my office commute vehicle, reading Tongue in Cheek by Khyrunnisa.

Been ages I read something in this genre, and this was a really welcome change after a not-so-exciting month of books I read in June. What makes this work immediately as you dive into, is the premises. All the situations, so familiar, we all must have gone through or going through in life. From scary root canal treatments to the house repairing woes. Horribly spelt menu cards to the love of freebies (and consequences of them). Everything here is deja vu, but the author's quick-witted take on the things makes these (thankfully, as it should be) short chapter-ed book much enjoyable. At places I felt it was Tharoor who entered in her, as the author put many words (very well put tho) that made me hit the dictionary button. Not that I am complaining.

People say, there are books that change your view on life. Absolutely, after this book, I will not look at a pressure cooker, the way I did before.

Tongue in the cheek by Khyrunnisa A is a light read taking us through her various experiences in life. Written as short chapters, divided into sections based on the experience I thoroughly enjoyed and related to this one.
From the scary experiences at the dentist( don't look at me Teenu and Avanti) to the difficulties of having a unique name endlessly butchered the author showed a pleasant and delightful take on life.
Life in a small town is mostly mundane, you know everyone and what is happening to everyone. From the judging relatives to helping neighbours, it is an experience in itself. The little pleasures at home, tending to garden , sometimes finding a snake as well(I know right!) to the never ending wait for the Lpg cylinder to come home hoping you have not missed the delivery! All the stories made me so nostalgic.
If you are looking for a light and humorous read, this will amuse you. I look forward to more work by the author now.

This is a compilation of satirical stories. Well, better to call them essays or humorous musings. The author claims to have crafted each anecdote from her real life experiences and the writing style highlights her great observational skills as she shows the knitty-gritties of life in a small town and the vanity and eccentricity of people.
It portrays the author's experiences and since she's Malyali, I expected that it'll be more relatable to her community but I was delightfully surprised at the universality of her stories.
The book has to the point humour; I had my had laugh-out-loud moments! The author is often cynical and hence this book is a never ending commentary on anything and everything.
This book is like a compilation of rants that every Indian will relate to. These anecdotes are grouped in themes and it provides a sense of semblance.
The best thing about the book is the fact that it is funny without being indecent, disrespectful or mean towards any section of the society.
I was constantly remembering Saki while reading this. Not an exaggeration, I tell you. H.H. Munro would approve of Khyrunnisa A
The only negative point of this book is that one cannot complete this in one sitting because even though the stories are really short, they tend to feel boring after a point of time due to an overdose of humor. Well, this is just a personal opinion based on my experience. It's just that I don't enjoy a continuous streak of humour and jokes and laughs. This is one of the reasons why I don't enjoy stand up much 🙈
Nevertheless, if you're looking for a light and humorous read, this book is for you.

Some favorite chapters from the book:
1) Where's the Rubberband Gone?
2) Food for Thought.
3) Nerves of Steel.
4) Picture Imperfect.
5) Booking a Seat.
6) No Directions, please.
7) The Elusive Newspaper.
8) Skin Deep.
9) Nothing is Free.
10) Serving Great Britain.

I have been reading this fun book by @akhyrunnisa and loving it. Tongue in Cheek is a collection of short stories and anecdotes of the observations of the author in daily life.

It's about enjoying the funny side of life with the moments that become lifetime memories. Yes, I had a smile on my face from the very first page. How a Lil misinterpretation or experimenting can change the whole situation and becomes a lifetime memory. Each page is filled with laughter.

The crisp and witty writing style of the author and an intriguing narration keeps the readers invested in. You are going to enjoy this read. It's about all those minor mistakes we make or the times when our mind wants to experiment or wants to do something extraordinary. The day-to-day encounters shared by the author are hilarious.

From kulchas, phulkas to the case of a lost key, from Parking worries to No directions, please, to nothing is free, from the planet of apps to picture imperfect the author wonderfully expressed the situations a funny and interesting way.

This book, it's a reminder of how we neglect the little joys of life, how we must embrace those moments and find happiness.

A light-hearted, fast-paced, and a elightful read that you'll love. Not to forget a beautiful cover.
Looking for a short, light and funny read? This is it.

Lol ok I know thats not how you write a review but this is not a review honestly .. I will quickly tell you why you need to pick this up !

🌸 The book is free for #kindleunlimited users

🌸 It is a short read only about 184 pages long so you can even get through this in one sitting

🌸 Short stories each only 3 to 4 pages long

🌸 Humour - is the need of the hour with all that is going around in the world . With this book you can have a hearty laugh and forget things for a while

🌸 The author is blessed with humour naturally and this book is a collection of funny anecdotes and incidents from her own life experience so its realistic and relatable

🌸 If you are a Malayali you will love this book and be able to relate to it a lot .
If you have friends who are malayali’s you will enjoy this for sure and you will go recommending it to them. If you are none of the above (like me) trust me you will still enjoy it neverthless 💕

If these points do not convince you to pick it up I do not know what else will 😅

The only drawback or problem I felt with this book was that some of the incidents just very few felt a bit exaggerated ! And for the same reason I rounded down my 4.5 rating to 🌟🌟🌟🌟

From the elasticity of a rubber band to the snake in a pond, from DIY misadventures to the blasting pressure cooker, from the aahs and ouches of the computer age to the cat-astrophe, every ordeal of normal human life or shall we call it adventurous misadventures of our unfortunate human life are captured like a candid funny picture from a vacation. It has all the elements to make you smile, remember what was, want to get back to it and brighten up like the sun itself. The livening up of a sad soul in a vacation is the same effect these stories have in the life of a person going through a reading slump.

The characters in the book were made evermore interesting by the eye and the pen of the writer. Even the dullest and the scariest of the stories felt like the happy stories of one’s past. Even the objects were given life and the animals, personalities not very different from humans. Breezy-easy and light on the heart, the stories had all the elements to cure one of the seriousness of life.

How the stories were written left me amazed. Never knew stories could be given life like that. Her narration, her command over the English language and her humorous flip to the pen is none like I have read or even heard of before. I am impressed with her writing skills and demand to know why she hasn’t written more for adults, why is there no lengthy fictional work by the author! Even non-fiction like this works more than fine.

Tongue in cheek, the author provides us with a wonderful experience of the author's life experiences, which are also our daily life experiences, and the author conveys them very humorously; we will laugh at every page and every story because the author writes it in this manner.
At first, I chose this book because it was mentioned and reviewed by Shashi Tharoor, and before reading this book, I had some kind of thought that this book consists of some boring stories, but after starting to read the first story, the author changed my mind, and it is not some boring stories. This book is going to give some wonderful experiences, and by the way the author wrote this book, we can tell that this author has a rich vocabulary. I understand that this is not a classic book or a collection of great short stories, but it does contain our life experiences so that we can easily connect with it, and as a result, I recommend that everyone read it; it is also beginner-friendly, and if beginners read this kind of book, it may spark an interest in developing a reading habit.

Super fun short pieces drawn from the author’s daily life! Very quick read of these wonderful morsels, reminded me of Twinkle Khanna (from the one book I read from her) kind of humour- sharp, witty, tongue-in-cheek! 😊 I chuckled at least once in every short article in the book. So job well done!
