A Slice of Love

Rate this book
Jonas Schwartz isn’t just good at playing football.
He’s also good at playing hearts, and four years ago, he played mine like it was the easiest game of his life.

Brokenhearted, I ran off to art school, swearing to forget about my one-off secret weekend with the star quarterback.

I’d heard whispers about his injury, but I never expected Jonas to return to our hometown to rehab his knee, and I certainly never thought he’d show up on the other side of my door with a pizza in hand.

He looks good. Better than before.

Whatever—I’m over him. I’ve completely moved on.

I just wish my heart would get the memo…

Jonas and Frankie knew each other in high school. Frankie had the double whammy of being both the pastor’s daughter, as well as the principal’s. She was pretty off limits to everyone. But Jonas had it bad for her. Something went down between them and it’s been years since they’ve seen each other, but Jonas has never forgotten about Frankie.

After college and an injury that has threatened his NFL career, Jonas is home getting PT and he runs into Frankie. The spark that was always between them is still there, but Jonas has a lot of explaining to do…. I loved these two together. I especially loved how they both carried that torch for each other for all those years.

Teagan Hunter always makes me laugh with her stories. This was no exception. It was funny, heartfelt, and so sweet!

Second Chance | Sports Romance

A Slice of Love by Teagan Hunter is a second chance, sports romance. This novella was previously published in the Team Player 2 anthology but has recently adapted into a novella which added new chapters and an epilogue. I myself never read the Team Player anthology so I can’t say what differences appear between the two, but I can say that I really enjoyed this one. Jonas and Frankie were adorable together! Teagan Hunter COULD have made this an angsty second chance romance but instead opted for a lighter, comedic read. I’m so glad for this because I’ve been reading so many angsty books that I needed something lighter and less dramatic.

I read A Slice of Love in one sitting. As I mentioned, it’s novella length but that doesn’t stop the author from making the story feel complete despite the length. Normally I don’t care for novellas because I don’t see enough character development but in all honesty I did here. I never felt like it was too fast or too underdeveloped. It felt just right!

If you’re looking for a sweet, funny, and charming read then you won’t want to miss A Slice of Love. This book fits in well with the other books in the Slice series but CAN stand alone. The focus of this story is only on these two and not the secondary characters from the series.

Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.

This was a delightful little story. Novellas are usually hit or miss with me because they are usually way too fast-paced, have instalove, or just lack details to make the story feel sufficient. I didn't have that problem with this novella and I was overjoyed by that.

This story really pulls you in right from the start. I loved how invested in the story I was. The storytelling was perfect and the story had a smooth flow. The premise of the story is one that delivers.

I loved the characters. We really get a feel for the characters in a short amount of time. Both characters were realistic and I felt so connected to them. I liked that the character growth was evident even though the story is not very long.

The romance was just darling. Frankie and Jonas fall in love in high school but things don't work out. They both pine for each other throughout college and when they see each other after college in a chance meeting their worlds are turned upside down. Feelings are heightened and things are hashed out. I loved the deep connection that they had and Jonas was so romantic.

Overall, this was a real winner of a novella. I am so happy that I gave this one a chance. I am liking this series and I can't wait for more!

A Slice of Love is a second romance between Frankie and Jonas who in high school started to build a friendship into something more before Jonas puts an end to it. 4 years later and who happens to be at Frankie's doorstep delivering a pizza, none other than Jonas Schwartz.

This was such a cute and sweet novella in the Slice Series. It was adorably funny and super swoon worthy and slightly frustrating at times and I enjoyed every minute of it. I loved both Frankie & Jonas as well as the various side characters present especially Jonas' entire family who I'm hoping might apear in a future Slice book maybe even Sully's book 😍😍❤ I love this entire series as well as Teagan's writing and can't wait to see what's next

Jonas was the football quarterback. Frankie was the nerdy, preacher’s daughter. They were paired as lab partners senior year and that partnership blossomed into something more. But they couldn’t be more different and Frankie was completely off limits. And by the time college started, they were both heartbroken.

Now 4-years later, Jonas is back in their hometown after a sports injury, waiting to heal in order to join the NFL. Frankie went to art school instead of the university her parents wanted, causing a strained relationship between them. And one night Jonas shows up at Frankie’s doorstep—to deliver a pizza. What the heck?

Jonas broke Frankie’s heart, but even if she’s furious at him, she’s never fallen out of love with him—and neither has he.

A Slice of Love by Teagan Hunter is book 4 in the Slice series. Novellas can be hit or miss for me, but this less than 200-page story gave me all the feels. I loved it so much! And although it wasn’t a full-length novel, I didn’t feel jipped. I was completely satisfied and felt like Teagan packed a punch into a short romance. This can be read as a standalone but fits in well with the series. 4.5/5 stars.

Summary
Frankie and Jonas can't deny their connection despite being a part of totally different worlds. He is the popular jock, on track for the NFL and she is the quiet, good girl everyone avoids. When their one amazing weekend together is ruined by the early return of Frankie's overly-restrictive parents, Jonas pushes Frankie from his life.
Now, Jonas is back in their hometown, rehabbing his recently injured knee and delivering pizzas for Slice. And the last person he was expecting to deliver to was Frankie, the girl he has never been able to let go of.

Overview
➸ POV: 1st Person, Jonas & Frankie's POV. Dual timeline - 4 years ago & today

➸ Jonas Schwartz - Football player, Recently finished college, NFL dreams, Injured & rehabbing his knee, Back home and delivering for Slice while rehabbing

➸ Frankie Callahan - "Good girl", Daughter to a pastor & principle, Lonely, Artist

➸ Content Warnings: Homophobia, Cancer

My Thoughts
This was super cute and full of Teagan Hunter's classic wit and banter. But this novella the tension and build up I love in my romances.

We first meet the characters when they're finishing up their senior year of high school. But even then, the characters already have a deep running connection. They have one life changing weekend but are forced apart for the next 4 years. And finally reunite when Jonas delivers a pizza to Frankie's house.

This romance was sweet and adorable but because the MCs already had strong romantic feelings when we're introduced to them, I had a hard time fully connecting to their relationship. I personally much prefer seeing a couple build that connection either for the first time, or trying to re-build something they lost. In this case, we just had to take their connection at face value. We get snippets of their past and why they feel so strongly for each other, but we never really get to see much of it. Instead it's just told to us that they have this all-consuming connection.

Which meant most of the novella was instead about external conflicts intermingled with a lot of apologizing.

Overall I just wanted more time seeing the main characters interact and grow as a couple. Their few scenes together had lots of tension and heat but I never fully bought into their deeper connection. I loved the snippets of other characters from this series and I'm really looking forward to seeing more of these 2 in futures books and how they connect with the characters we already know and love.

Frankie and Jonas were total opposites in high school but that didn’t stop them from wanting to be together until something happens and poor Frankie’s heart is left broken but Jonas is back years later after a injury and they see each other in the cutest way her love still runs just as deep as his regret and he knows he won’t stop until she forgives him. This was such a cute little read that left me smiling throughout

2.5 Stars!

Typical second chance romance that we all hate, but it had its cute moments. The only reason I'm even reading this is because it's part of a connected series, and I was hoping Teagan wouldn't butcher it, which she technically didn't, instead she kept everything pretty vague. This time I will blame the heroine though instead of the hero.

Frankie and Jonas really like each other, Frankie throws herself at Jonas even though she knows his manho ways, then the next day Jonas wants nothing to do with her, though we find out it's because her parents found out and threatened him. He planned to tell her when they were both in college because they were supposed to go to the same one, but she changed her mind at the last minute and went somewhere else so he never got to explain everything.

Fast forward 4 years, Frankie never moved on and stayed celibate because "no one else has made her feel that way" the way Jonas made her feel. They barely dated each other before and had only had sex once, and Jonas waited awhile before moving on, so I can't really blame him for sleeping with OW, what got me mad was how she was still celibate *eye roll*. Though he never fully got over her, and never said outright that he slept with OW, I'm almost 100% positive he did sleep around because he did casually mention his "hookups" one time, though it wasn't clear if it was his HS or college hook ups, though I'm pretty sure college. So apparently he still pined after her but easily slept with other women, okay. I actually didn't mind it too much, but he was still a jerk for how easily he ignored her and never groveled enough, though he did say sorry. He also made a comment later on that made me mad about how there was no reason for him to play her when he can have anyone he wants and she was pretty much a nobody, and SHE was the one who threw herself at him, not the other way around. That did make me pretty mad, but it was said in the heat of the moment, and then I started getting annoyed at the heroine because she DID throw herself at him even knowing his ways.

So not only does she easily give up her virginity, then she never moves on because she hasn't gotten over him even after all he's done, but then she throws herself at him AGAIN later on. She still wasn't over him leaving the first time and shes so ready to have sex with him. Like why. Jonas was an idiot yes, but he tried making everything right with her and didn't want to rush it, so I'm fully blaming me not liking this book on her.

Besides all of that and the heroine, the only reason I'm rating this above a 1 star, is because the hero had some really sweet moments. You can tell he really cared for her and I really liked how he proposed to her, unfortunately I still didn't care for him too much.

Overall, just an eh book. I'm still excited for Sully's story though, and I'm wondering if Thea will be his heroine, and maybe the fake relationship aspect will be her inviting him to Jonas and Frankie's wedding? Guess we will see.

A witty second chance romance that had me smiling ear to ear, A Slice of Love is just what I needed! This novella packed as much of a punch as a full-length novel. Frankie and Jonas found their way back to each other after many years and their story was full of fun, laughs and emotional moments that had me reading this book in one afternoon! A Slice of Love is a great addition to the Slice Series and all of the books can be read as a standalone (although I recommend reading each and every one)!

As others have said, Slice of Love was released as part of the Team Player 2 Anthology book last year but Teagan gives us some extras and an epilogue now in this novella and I absolutely adored this book!

Jonas and Frankie are what I'd call legitimate 'relationship goals'. I love reading about high school sweethearts! This is one of those stories, but it's funny, swoon-worthy, steamy, and full of emotion at the same time.

This was yet again, another great piece of work from Teagan!

A second chance sports romance previously published in the Team Player 2 anthology adapted into a novella.

Jonas Schwartz, was captain of the football team scoring off the field just as much as he does on it.

Francis ‘Frankie’ Callahan bears the misfortune of being the daughter to two prominent figures, both the pastor and the principal.

Frankie and Jonas fell for each other when they were in high school, thrilled to be assigned as her lab partner, they spent their time in class passing notebooks and getting to know each other. One weekend when her parents are away, he comes to her house to work on their project, and they share a first for her, until her parents early return…the next day. Their plans to attend college together, are wrecked when outside forces intervened, threatening Jonas, forcing them apart.

After their weekend, time elapses without a shared word and Frankie writes him a note which he cryptically refuses. Her father threatened his future unless he stayed away from her.

She leaves heartbroken for art school, while he goes on to play football, she reflects that she owes him a debt of gratitude, for after their weekend together—he gave her the courage to chase her dream of attending art school.

Another reason she changed her college plans was being unable to bear the thought of seeing him with the different girls. It took six months before her mother spoke to her, and three and a half years for her father to accept her decision…which he only did because of his cancer diagnosis.

Julian Schenn, star linebacker of the Dogwood Dodgers, and herself had gone to school together for years but their paths never crossed until their senior year when they were both cast in a play. Turns out Julian was a closet theatre geek…and he was closeted about other things too. They bonded over their parents unrealistic expectations, pushing them to be people they weren’t; making them inseparable.

Four years later Frankie has returned to her hometown, when unexpectedly Jonas is delivering her pizza, he’s temporarily back in town recovering from an injury. Despite their attraction and connection, they must still work through their past misunderstandings and her animosity.

Following a public outburst with her parents, they go to Jonas’s parents and find his parents.
I hold my finger up to my lips, mouthing, “Sleeping.” Frankie nods, and we silently make our way down the hall.
As we approach the living room, the sounds from the TV grow more audible, and I’m concerned about what my parents were watching because it’s clearly sex noises.
I glance at Frankie, lifting my brows in a silent Are you hearing this too?
She lifts her shoulders and we press on.
I wish we hadn’t.
Because on the couch are my parents.
Lips locked. Tops off. My dad’s hand clearly up my mother’s skirt.
“MY EYES!” I scream, covering my face so I can’t scar myself with any other images.
“Oh sh*t! Letica!”
“Harvey! Grab my dress!”
There’s a lot of shuffling and cussing and a whole hell of a lot of humiliation burning through me right now.
Then there’s Frankie, who is standing beside me laughing so hard she’s not making a sound, but I can feel her shaking.
“Knock it off,” I mutter, peeking at her through my hands.
“Well, I just told half the town you deflowered me. I guess we’re square on embarrassing events to last a lifetime.”
“Deflowered? Jonas Schwartz! You deflowered our pastor’s daughter?”
I glare at her. “You were boning my father in the living room?”
“Actually, there was no boning. You cockblocked me,” my dad helpfully explains.
I groan. “Oh my god.”
“Tell me about it.” My dad stands, extending a hand to Frankie. “Hi. I don’t think we’ve ever been formally introduced. This is my wife Letica. I’m Harvey.”
I smack his hand away. “Get that out of here. I don’t know where that thing has been.”
“Good heavens, Jonas. It’s not big a deal. We’ve clearly had sex before.”
“Twice. In my mind, you’ve ever only had sex twice.”
My mother rolls her eyes, and my father tries not to laugh.
“Come on,” I say, ignoring them and grabbing Frankie’s hand. “We’re going upstairs.”
She laughs, giving my parents a wave as I tug her toward the staircase.
“It was great meeting you, Frankie,” my father says.
“Keep the door open!” my mother hollers when we reach the top of the steps” cackling.

This was sweet. It’s okay to move on, and to build a life, Frankie could have benefited from exploring her sexuality rather than pining, as my preferences are either both central characters remain celibate, or they both have other relationships. Not languishing of unrequited love.

Ohhh 😍😍😍😍😍
This book was so cute!!! I really loved it! It was a fast read, we don't see much of the other characters, but Jonas works at Slice for a little bit and I remembered someone talking about a quarterback working there on books 1 or 2. It was great reading this story. I loved the characters, the background story, the secondary characters and I'm so so happy to see Thea in the next book, I was really curious about her. And to finally see Sully get a happy ending? It's magical!
Wonderful, wonderful book! Loved it!

So I first fell for Jonas in the Team Player 2 Anthology and I couldn't help myself but come back for more! Damn was it nice to get an epilogue and more!

This novella was so beautiful. I've missed Teagan's writing and being able to dive back into the Slice Series world to fall in love with new characters, Frankie and Jonas, was so much fun.

They're both wanting a second chance at a mistake then made when Jonas left Frankie in High School after their connection went so far.

When he delivers a pizza to her house and she instantly recognises him, they both know there's no going back from trying at this second chance, no matter how upset they may have been at their stolen moment four years ago.

I adored them so hard, along with Julian and the little cameo from Drew and Winston, who were in the first Slice book, A Pizza My Heart.

Teagan's humour and heart fills this short so well that you'll be craving more. Trust me I couldn't help myself the first time and had to go straight onto I Knead You Tonight but now? Now I shall patiently wait for Cheesy on the Eyes! So ready for that baby!

5 Star review A Slice Of Love (Slice #4) by Teagan Hunter

The fourth book in the series and was an entertaining read. This is a second chance at love story which ticked the boxes for me.

This is Jonas Schwartz and Frankie (Frank) Callahan’s story and I was captivated from the first to the last chapter. Although a quick read I quickly became invested in the story that Ms.Hunter wove and was disappointed when it ended.

Jonas ticked all the boxes for me, he is totally swoon worthy and Frank was sassy, feisty and such an awesome character that I loved her. Emotional at times, there was also humour and a whole lot of fun. I loved the notebooks, this was just an added bonus that really brought another layer to the story.

A book that has it all, it’s funny, sweet, romantic, spicy and a tale of love. Ms. Hunter wove a story that ensured I didn't want to put it down.

I could’ve continued reading about Jonas and Frankie because they were amazing characters. I loved the chemistry and the dynamics of their story.
One of my favorite things about this story is the fact Teagan Hunter was able to build an amazing relationship and entertaining story for a character that was mentioned, I believe, once!!

This novella was originally part of the Team Player 2 Anthology, but has since been republished with BRAND NEW bonus content AND an epilogue!

A Slice of Love is a beautifully heartwarming second chance sports romance that will have you swooning the entire time you find yourself lost between the pages! Teagan Hunter is one of my favorite ROMCOM authors and it was so nice to be back in the Slice world, even if only for a little while. Her storytelling ability and character development always gives me the warm fuzzies deep inside the pit of my stomach and this story was no exception. I wholeheartedly loved Jonas and Frankie's story and how they found their way back to one another. With a love like theirs, it was destined in the stars.

Even if you haven't been introduced to the Slice world yet, this is a great introduction to a world full of LOVE and of course don't forget the PIZZA! This is the perfect story to get lost in for a few hours so make sure to pick up a copy now and fall in love with Jonas and Frankie!

The couple: Jonas and Frankie

Romance genre: second chance
Series: Slice
Length: 157 pages

Plot: Jonas and Frankie knew each other back in high school, when Jonas was the football star and Frankie was both the principal's and the pastor's daughter. She wanted Jonas to be her first, and Jonas wanted her as badly. After their first time, though, Jonas took off, and Frankie never saw him again - until now, when he came back home to recuperate from an injury before starting his career in pro football. She's still mad at him even though his leaving her gave her the push she needed to go to college on her own without her parents' approval, and she still wants him, despite being so mad at him. Jonas has more to tell her though, about that night when everything went wrong - if she's willing to listen.

Commentary: Another case of easily cleared up misunderstandings! Of course, Frankie's parents are despicable and it's easy enough to understand that an 18-year-old would believe that her dad might have some influence over this football career, given the circumstances. It's also understandable that Frankie would be so hurt that she never wanted to see or speak to Jonas again. What confounded me was Frankie's friend - he knew all sides of the story and shared with nobody what actually happened. I know he thought he was doing Frankie a favor by allowing her to grow, etc., and maybe he was, but it was still a little weird that she forgave him so easily but held a grudge against Jonas for years. It felt a little contrived. And then the friend said this:
“Can I be honest with you?” He doesn’t wait for me to answer. “Who gives a flying fuck about the past? You were kids. You did something dumb. It didn’t pan out the way you wanted it to. Get over it. You’re not the same person you were four years ago, and neither is he. Quit living in the past and start living in the now. You deserve it.”

That kinda made me mad, because first of all, it's not his hurt to catalogue - he doesn't get to say whether or not she should get over it or whether it's dumb or not. Secondly, what was dumb? Giving her virginity to a guy she thought loved her? I mean, that's kind of the endgame. I think her friend was being unnecessarily mean and also oblivious to how much Jonas really meant to her, then and now.
I did like the added coincidence that Jonas's injury was from him trying to see Frankie at a game, and that nothing was made of that (no guilt or weirdness). But all in all, this is still the humorous writing I've come to expect from this series, and I enjoyed seeing Frankie finally tell off her parents and get her guy.

Next book in the series: Cheesy on the Eyes

You might think this book seems familiar and it is you might have read it in Ready Player Two anthology. This version has given more of a backstory and a future to Frankie and Jonas. It’s still the same banter and still the same heartache but oh boy these two. My heart hurt for Frankie once again and I wanted to punt Jonas over a field goal. This book also gave me hope for these two.

Frankie’s heart was ruined when Jonas just up and left for college. She has held onto that hurt for four years when she runs into Jonas again. She thought he was supposed to be living the life of a NFL quarterback so what is he doing in her town with a pizza she ordered? Little by little she starts to let Jonas back in, but he will hear from her first. Jonas has never stopped loving Frankie. He always thought they didn’t belong because she was his pastors and his principal’s daughter. She was untouchable but he crushed on her. When forces unseen made him flee to college without a goodbye he went through the motions until he ended up on her doorstep. Jonas starts to woo Frankie again and puts his reasons why he left her the way he did out on the table. Recovering from an injury and seeing Frankie again Jonas doesn’t know how he will leave her or their town again.

These two are cute! That’s it. Those notebooks with their letters are the cutest. It’s just cute. I think I’ve said that enough. I like that Teagan Hunter has expanded on their story and giving us some closure to the proper girl with red curls and the burly quarterback with a giant heart.

Teagan has written another perfect edition to the Slice series. God, I adored this book and the characters. A Slice of Love is a second chance romance filled with sweet and emotional moments, personal growth and so much laughter.

Jonas and Frankie share a secret romance in high school. They are complete opposites, Jonas the popular quarterback and Frankie, the untouchable pastor and school principal’s daughter. They both have secret crushes on each other and just when they make plans and take steps to further their relationship, they are forced apart. Four years later and they have chance to rekindle their love and what a great love they share.

Teagan’s writing flows effortlessly. Her ability to incorporate just enough drama to hold my attention whilst throwing in some seriously hilarious moments that had me laughing out loud. I don’t think there is a bad thing I can say about A Slice of Love. The plot, the writing and the new and reoccurring characters are completely and utterly captivating and I cannot wait to read Sully’s story. I have been dying for it since meeting him in the first book. Huge thumbs up from me.
