The Spacers' Guild needs a new president, and Hal Spacejock is determined to cast his vote... even though he's not a member.
Meanwhile, Hal's latest cargo job belongs to someone else, his shiny new ship is losing money hand over fist, and doing a good favour could turn out to be the biggest mistake of his life.
Join Hal and Clunk in their tenth adventure, where the only good boots are... Cold Boots!
Hal Spacejock novels are self-contained, with a beginning, a middle and a proper ending. They're not sequels, they don't end on a cliffhanger, and you could start or end your journey with any book in the series. Some events from earlier books are referenced in later ones, so it makes sense to read them in order, but it's not essential.
Simon Haynes is the author of the Hal Spacejock, Harriet Walsh and Hal Junior (MG) series. He divides his time between writing fiction and computer software, with the occasional bike ride thrown in for a laugh.
Hal is at it again. Getting into trouble whilst just doing what he usually does.
Hal has been off world delivering cargo, but finds himself in hot water when he goes to collect a new cargo. Because another pilot hadn't turned up on time, the controller, a young woman called Jenny, gives him his own and the other pilots cargo. But as Hal is loading the cargo, he is viciously attacked by the pilot whose cargo he now has.
The other pilot, Tyanna Rydell, is the owner of a delapidated old starship called the Scarecrow, and is in desperate need of the cargo Hal has been given because she has to pay someone called Big Bob. A mean man Big Bob is known to put detonators into all the ships that work for him. He is also well known for destroying cargo ships who fail to pay him his exorbitant fees on time. So Tyanna must get the cargo back. After beating Hal up, she sends him back to talk the controller into giving the cargo back to Tyanna, which he goes to do.
But when he reaches the office, he finds it in a bad state. The staff tell him that the controller called Jenny is nowhere to be found and has left the computers locked up, so he must find her so that she can reorganise the job back to the Tyanna.
Eventually he does find her but she tells him that she's in trouble because she gave him the other cargo. He offers to help her, and from then on things escalate and grow until he becomes the one in trouble.
I love the Hal Spacejock series. It's always a good fun read. Poor Hal is a man who seems to attract trouble. And his friend and business partner Clunk the robot is always trying to keep Hal out of trouble. It's hilarious what they get up to!
These books are entertaining and funny. I haven't found one that I haven't liked. They are all really great!
Hélas, this the last story for now, even if the 11th book was supposed to be released in 2022 (end of July 2023, here). There is no new book from Mr. Haynes since 2020, so I hope he only took a break from writing for an underdetermine period and that nothing bad happened to him...
Went from the first in the series straight to this one. Clearly no character development has taken place through the series. The book rattles along quite well managing to be mildly amusing for the most part.
Great story, wrapped up a bit quick at the gene but funny throughout as usual. Great to see another book in its way, looking forward to that one as well.
I was lucky enough to be an Alpha reader for this book so I got to read it in 2-3 chapter batches as the author was writing it.
This time Hal and Clunk get way over their heads after stealing someone else's cargo job. That's never a good idea. Especially when another robot takes over Clunk's body....
I have truly enjoyed this book. Fast moving forward and very good cliffhangers. This is the first book in the series (of Hal Spacejock) that I read. Without a problem. You can easily read this without knowing the previous books. Looking for a fun adventure in space, this is the book for you.
