It’s 1987. Sam is a rookie geologist who finds herself working for a dodgy entrepreneur in the small South American country of Sierramar. At first, it seems as if she has made a mistake. Bored and badly paid, she struggles to adapt; thank goodness for her mad friend Gloria. When a work trip to the jungle yields a clue to a long-hidden archaeological treasure, Sam gets involved in an expedition to uncover the truth. But she’s not the only one searching, and some will kill to get there first. Fool's Gold is book one in the complete Sam Harris Adventure series. If you like Indiana Jones, you'll love this exciting adventure with realistic storylines set in an exotic location before modern technology.
PJ Skinner was born in Guildford, one of seven siblings. When she was six, the family moved to Ireland where she attended school. She went to Trinity College, Dublin University, graduating as a geologist. After graduation, PJ spent 35 years working in over thirty countries as an exploration geologist. PJ worked in many remote, strange, and often dangerous places, and loved every minute, despite encountering her fair share of misogyny and other perils. During this time, she collected the tall tales and real-life experiences which inspired her to write the Sam Harris Adventure Series. The series chronicles the adventures of a pioneering female geologist in an almost exclusively male world. After finishing the Sam Harris Adventure series, PJ's childhood in Ireland inspired her to write the Green Family Saga, which follows the fortunes of an English family who move to Ireland just before the start of the Troubles, under the name of Kate Foley. PJ moved to the south coast of England just before the Covid pandemic. There she wrote Mortal Mission, a sci-fi mystery set on Mars, inspired by her fascination with all things celestial. It is a science-based murder mystery; think The Martian with fewer potatoes and more bodies. The enjoyment of writing Mortal Mission encouraged her to try writing a mystery series. She has always been a massive fan of crime and mystery, so it was inevitable she would turn her hand to it eventually. She published Deadly Return, the first book in the Seacastle Mysteries in July 2023 to great success. The Seacastle Mystery Series is a contemporary cosy mystery series with an amateur female sleuth, her grumpy ex-husband, hacker stepson and ungrateful rescue cat. The ensemble cast adds banter and humour as the series follows their stories between the murder mysteries. Poison Politics, book 10, will be released on the 31st of December 2025.
Sam Harris is a just-now-university graduate of geology. She's also broke, living at home with her parents, coming out of a bittersweet relationship with an estranged boyfriend, and up to her ears in college debt. With no jobs in England for a graduate with no first-hand experience, and no jobs abroad in search of a female geologist, she decides to take a much-needed vacation in the Mediterranean Sea to relax, recover, and figure out what to do next.
This trip to the Med turns out to be a blessing in disguise.... or the death of her.
After an unexpected meeting with an unscrupulous adventurer living off the money of rich people longing for excitement, Sam is hired as assistant geologist for an expedition to Sierramar in the jungles of South America. The trip barely pays enough in the way of expenses and college debt payments, but it's a job Sam hopes to pad her resume enough for bigger and better things in the future.
After agreeing to terms with her new employer, Sam embarks on a journey to the other side of the world where she lives in squalid conditions, eats food that will make one puke their guts out, can't swim in the rivers without facing the dangers of small fish crawling up your insides, and must deal with men who refuse to except women as equals, especially in the field of geology.
Upon stumbling on clues of the lost treasure of the Incas, Sam is now hired with the task of locating it, and bringing it back for her desperate employers. But little does she know there are others searching for the same treasure, and they will stop at nothing to get it first, even if it means killing the competition.
This is my first book of the Sam Harris series, and I'm hooked! P.J. Skinner is herself a geologist, and author, and I have no doubt her experiences added much credible adventure to this story. Sam is a character right after a reader's heart. She's smart, curious, friendly, the kind who probably doesn't know how beautiful she is to others, and longs to make her mark in the world of geology. Add to that a touch of adventure, suspense, and danger, and you have one fantastic story. I look forward to the other books by this author, and so will you. If you want a book that will take you to far off places, then this is it. So kick back and enjoy!
This is quite an exciting book. It is a little like reading the feminine version of Indiana Jones, the early years! Sam, a newly qualified geologist stumbles by chance into her first job after meeting two men in a bar. They know only too well that a keen junior like Sam would be a walkover, and cheap. But, is she as dumb as they seem to think?
Sam jumps at such a great opportunity to work as a geologist in the jungle, even more exciting is the fact that they will be searching for the lost treasure of the Inca’s. Imagine that! What a great start to her career.
However not everything goes according to plan. There is Wilson and Alfredo along with a wonderful mix of characters in this story. Some menacing, some kind and new friendships to be made too. But who should Sam trust....can she trust anyone at all?
Will they find the treasure, is it all a myth. Only one way to find out. Read the story, it will have you gripped till the end.
Sam Harris is a plucky, rather naive female geologist, one of the first women to move into this profession, and as such she has a lot to learn. Getting her first job after university is not easy, and so she accepts a position searching for gold reserves in mountainous rainforests in Africa, working for a very dodgy boss. We learn a lot about Sam in the book, and she becomes a very believable character. The period when the book is set, 1987, is evoked brilliantly, especially the comparatively basic technology. The story is exciting, well told and certainly kept me turning the pages. This is a great first book in an excellent series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this adventure. The thrill of the chase for gold! Sam is a young woman on her first real travel adventure and it feels pretty honest for being set in 1987, dealing with male attitudes, jungles, and lack of the ubiquitous cell phone.
If you enjoyed this book, you'll probably enjoy Toy of the Gods: A Page Turning Adventure - A book with a strong female character, adventure in the jungle, with an Inca god, and the hunt for a missing civilization.
This was an enjoyable, light entertainment read. We follow geologist Sam as she treks the South American rainforest in search of hidden treasure. I thought the descriptions of the rainforest were particularly good and they transport the reader to the real place. I also liked Sam's adventurous spirit. Sometimes the pacing was a bit slow, but I think overall it makes a good mystery adventure. 3.5 stars.
I received Fool's Gold, the first of the Sam Harris series, from TheFussyLibrrian, P.J. Skinner, and Amazon Digital Services. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read this novel of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. I am pleased to recommend PJ Skinner to friends and family. She writes a tight, exciting mystery with realistic characters in locales we are not always familiar with. This is a series I will want to complete.
It's 1987 and Englishwoman Sam Harris has just finished qualifying for her Master's degree in geology. Of course, in 1987 mining was an occupation almost exclusively held by men and she has student loans that will kick in immediately, so she really needs a job. She is offered one in the rainforest of Sierramar in South America. The entrepreneur offering her this position is very much as shifty as a used car salesman, and the pay sounds ok but is perhaps not forthcoming, but it's a job, it will give her practical experience, and it will look really good on her resume.
Our cast is made up, for the most part, of the natives who live in the isolated, primitive communities scattered through the rainforests of Sierramar, most accessible by river travel or sometimes by train, or only occasionally on wildly erratic two tracks wandering through the forest. There are no motels, hotels, or hostels, no indoor plumbing, and the available bedding is often infested by bedbugs and mosquitos. The food is good, however, and plentiful, and Sam enjoys the company of the women she meets as she travels through the country-side searching for signs of gold in and near the rivers of the region. The men involved in the search are a different story. Again 1987 was a time when macho was considered a masculine asset. Native men treat her with respect, but she is almost raped by a fellow Englishman. A naive Sam has to establish new boundaries of what she will tolerate but she adjusts very quickly to a stance that will protect her from the gropings of men in general and Englishmen in particular. She is her only protection as her boss Mike cannot travel with the crew because of heart health issues.
And then Sam finds the sign of the snake. This could be the X that marks the spot of ancient Incan artifacts of gold - but if it is, turning that treasure over to the native communities would have to be the honorable thing to do... But it is doubtful that boss Mike and the wealthy Englishman who is ultimately footing the bill for this wild ride will feel that way about it...

Book Theme Song: Quixote by Crywolf The song was made after the artist's equipment was stolen while he was abroad. This didn't stop him from making music and may have even fueled his creativity. I thought that meaning was in line with the themes of this book. The pacing is a lot slower than I thought it'd be. The treasure hunt doesn't begin until well over halfway in. Instead, the focus is on developing the characters and the world. Reading about Sam's struggle to learn the ways of Sierramar reminded me of when I studied abroad in New Zealand. Of course, New Zealand is a much nicer place, but the feeling of culture shock and what it's like to travel abroad by yourself for the first time is portrayed very accurately. The author definitely seems to be writing from experience at many points, and it makes the world feel more real. There are some plot threads that are obvious sequel hooks and seem unrelated to the rest of the narrative, which did take me out of the story, but I still really enjoyed the book as a whole. I would recommend Fool's Gold to people looking for something to read on a plane or during a sleepless night in the hostel.
Hunting for treasure in the jungle. Assorted characters all trying to finishing it.
South American country, somewhere in the Amazon basin, a female geologist takes her first job for an entrepreneur hunting for an Inca treasure. Shady characters, rain, villains all work at odds, headed for a surprise ending.
A slow build-up leads to an excellent rainforest adventure. I liked this style as it allowed the author to really develop the Sierramar world and characters which brought the story to life. I will definitely be reading the next in the series.
Fools Gold by P.J.Skinner 5 stars Indiana Jones meets Bring them back alive in this incredibly intoxicating read. Sam Harris finds herself living the most exciting life a geologist could hope for. Drama around every corner, rocks and minerals mixed with treasure, deception, friendships and more.
This is the book in the series and is about a young newly qualified geologist finding her way in a male dominated field. Good characters and an interring storyline made this a good page turner and I will be reading the next installment.
Thius is the first book in the Sam Harris adventure series and it was an enjoyable read. I magine Indiana Jones as a woman named Sam who had just graduated and looking for their first job and you have the general idea of this book. It was well written with a compelling storyline and well developed characters. The book starts off as a slow burner but then when we get into the flow of the story it increases in pacing and is full of action/adventure. The book is full of vivid descriptions of the area that Sam finds herself in from the town to the jungle, I felt like I could jump right into the action with her. I cannot wait for more from this series
Well written adventure story that gives the desire to travel. Well-developped characters and interesting themes. Good distraction book to read when in a plane and airport.
This book focuses on geologist Sam; in need of a job, she accepts an offer that takes her to the rainforests of Sierramar, to an adventure that gets her in some unanticipated situations.
With "Fool's Gold", PJ Skinner has created a slowly yet steadily developing adventure around Sam Harris. The story comprises a variety of characters with sufficient depth, drama, surprising turns which are solved as the story continues, and interesting geological/archaeological passages. I had a good time reading "Fool's Gold" – it is the beginning of a promising series. I was drawn into the story having finished the first chapter, already getting closer to Sam.
This is for you if you like female protagonists, characters with an agenda, and slower-paced (yet not too slow) adventures.
An alright read; nothing earth shattering. Another take on a hidden treasure, the lost Incan gold, that has been written about before. Of course it has not been proven to actually exist, and some theorists say that it was found, melted down or put in someone's private collection. We will never know... unless, of course, someone does discover it.
The characters were varied, rich, and believable, from the sinister to the naive, they all made for an enjoyable experience. It's been quite some time since I've read a book I didn't want to put down. I can't wait to read the next one.
Customer Reviews Top customer reviews K.D. McNiven 5.0 out of 5 stars Looking for a fun adventure? Then Fool's Gold written by PJ Skinner ... May 17, 2018 Format: Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase Looking for a fun adventure? Then Fool's Gold written by PJ Skinner is the book for you. This story is about the feisty, somewhat rebellious geologist, Sam Harris. Looking to gain more experience in the field she meets up with Mike Morton, who wants to hire her to go along with his project manager to review their exploration projects in Sierramar in the South American jungle. Sam can't resist even though she's told she won't be paid a salary. However, it would afford her the field experience she's looking for. Once there, she meets Wilson Ortega, a geologist from Sierramar whom she will have to work alongside and who becomes a vile antagonist as the story unfolds.
Taking some snapshots, Sam unknowingly snaps a photo of a snake and when Alfredo Vargas, a drunken treasure hunter sees it, he reveals that the stairs behind the snake is a cipher and that it was the key to a lost treasure. It was after making the decision to go in search of the treasure that the excitement and intrigue begin to heat up.
Skinner does a great job fleshing out her characters. They are real and relatable. It's an easy read and full of adventure. I'd recommend this book to anyone who has an adventuresome spirit and likes a strong female protagonist.
This is my first experience with this author and it won’t be the last . The Sam Harris adventure was as good as, if not better, than any Indiana Jones tale. Plenty of excitement and intrigue to keep you interested . Definitely a page turner. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and it helped me know that “ PJ” is a real life geologist, which, for me, gave the story more credence. I have book 2 in my library and will be reading that next. Another brilliant author added to my stable of writers.
An enjoyable read - we're introduced to Sam on her first adventure in a Sierramar. What starts out as a new job turns into an exciting hunt for Incan treasure
I have since read Hitler's Finger and the Star of Simbako.. I'm really enjoying Sam's adventures and am already looking forward to #4 to see where Sam goes next...
This book was full of action and mystery. It takes place in South American jungles. I like to read mystery and stories about geologists and when there is an ancient myth involved ...it's even better!! I recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and action. I give it 5 stars.
iN THIS very readable story a young lady graduates from college as a geologist but like students today it is very difficult to get a job in your field. She jumps at the chance to go to the jungle to search for gold for almost no pay. They have some adventures, make new friends and adjust to a different life style. The book has it mystery and some shady characters. Recommend.
This book was enjoyable as the characters were well defined and the background research helped the story along. A clever adventure with believable characters.
