The One and Only Ivan Movie Tie-In Edition: My Story
The #1 New York Times bestselling and Newbery Award-winning novel The One and Only Ivan is now a major motion picture streaming on Disney+, with a star-studded cast including Sam Rockwell, Angelina Jolie, Danny DeVito, Helen Mirren, Bryan Cranston, and more! This movie tie-in hardcover edition features full-color images from the film, quotes from the stars, and new cover art. This unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendship. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this illustrated book is told from the point of view of Ivan himself. Ivan is an easy-going gorilla. Living at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade, he has grown accustomed to humans watching him through the glass walls of his domain. He rarely misses his life in the jungle. Mostly, he thinks about art. Then he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from her family, and she makes Ivan see their home—and his own art—through new eyes. When Ruby arrives, change comes with her, and it’s up to Ivan to make it a change for the better. The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus , School Library Journal , and Amazon and earned four starred reviews. In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little , Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events. And don’t miss the sequel to this beloved modern classic— The One and Only Bob !

My 10 yr old son and I tried to read this together. I had to finish without him as it was too emotional for his sensative heart. Good story but my child had a hard time with the grief and felt really bad throughout the majority until he finally said he couldn't finish. I finished it and told him the end.

August 18, 2020Poignant. Written with very short “chapters” to pull the reader along.
Inspired by a true story of a captive gorilla in a mall.
Pulls on the heartstrings.
Great characterization.
Both of my kids loved the book and my son insisted I read it, too. (He read it in about one sitting!)

3.5 - Just finished reading this book and WOW. I thought the writing was good and the characterisation of Ivan was well done. It is truly impressive how Applegate has translated the thoughts of a gorilla onto page. At times, I did feel like the language and imagery was quite dark and explicit considering this is a children's book. But at the same time, I think it's important that we must not censor some realities or minimise how common abuse towards animals is. Overall, a good read!
