The dead are now walking the earth, spreading chaos and hurt throughout the land. Can Tony the Terrible, online gamer and Apocalypse warrior survive the coming storm? Has he the skills?...No. Will he become the leader the world needs him to be?...doubtful. But the main question is, will he survive?…...Maybe.
Nick James is the author of books covering many genres. From ‘The Misplaced Man Trilogy’ and ‘The Victorian Vampire’ to ‘What Zombie Apocalypse’. He has now hit the ground running with science fiction titles; ‘The Time Travelling Tourist’ and his recent release ‘They Stand Among Us’, an alien invasion story. All are written in his easy-to-read style, with action and humor. He has countless other stories and sequels in the planning stages.
You can't take this book too seriously because it doesn't take itself seriously, like at all. It's another zombpoc novella with an unlikely survivor as a main character that knows it's just another zombpoc novella with an unlikely survivor as a main character.
Tony is goofy, sometimes it's charming, sometimes it makes you want to slap him upside the head but he's a generally decent-ish sort of guy (maybe he's born with it maybe it's just ).
A lot of the usual zombie tropes are present, including one I particularly don't care for but it was done in a generally humorous way so it didn't irk me as much as it normally would.
I began this book with low expectations, and by the time I finished I was looking for a sequel. From humble beginnings comes a darn good story of a not-so-loveable loser who, just like the story, grows into something worthwhile. There's humor, there's drama, there's character growth, there's Pickled Onion Monster Munch. What more could you ask for in the apocalypse?
Here is my review of "What Zombie Apocalypse?" by Nick James:
LOL funny, while at the same time drawing the reader deeper into the nightmare that has become the struggle to survive for former couch potato, video game addict, and junk food junkie Tony Anderson. After a night of binging on Viagra, Red Bull and porn, he has no idea that something is wrong until he hears a couple of explosions. Glancing out his flat window, he discovers a fire in the distance and assumes the local petrol station has blown up, and people are racing helter-skelter through the streets. He checks the internet for information and reads the first headlines about a pandemic and the dead walking (plus, Richard Gere married someone or something – that’s the British tabloids for you). His further investigation into the news tells him the infection had spread quickly and the armed forces had been activated. By the next day, there is more destruction and a mass of walking dead outside his window. At this point, Tony is glad he is already a master at sheltering in place. He raids the empty apartments in his building for food and supplies. However, a wildfire approaching his neighborhood numbers his days at his flat, as does the appearance of an insane intruder seeking safety. This book had me reading almost all the way through at one sitting; it is that good! Tony is one of those characters the readers root for as he slowly transforms from sloth to “Man of Iron.” I won’t tell the story here, but let’s say our once hapless hero discovers all kinds of inner resources he never knew he had. WHAT ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? is a rip-roaring ride with non-stop humor via human absurdity as the icing between a triple-layered cake baked with a generous helping of horror and suspense. I loved this book! It made me forget about Covid-19 for awhile. Kudos to author Nick James for a fabulous story and colorful cast of characters. I highly recommend this book! Five stars!
Simon Pegg & Nick Frost have the Corneto Trilogy and Nick James now has the ongoing Pickled Onion Monster Munch Saga, and the world is a happier place for it.
I read this book during the COVID-19 Lockdown of 2020, a time which feels quite apocalyptic but thankfully not on quite the same scale as Nick draws us into.
What Zombie Apocalypse? feels like is a mixture of Sean of The Dead, The Walking Dead, Z Nation and a few other zombie flicks thrown in but refreshingly never takes itself too seriously and (spoilers) it's about time we had a hero that actually has bowel movements, even if they do appear to be quite involuntary and frequent.
On more than one occasion I was audibly giggling during this read which is always a good thing in my book.
Now to wait almost 9 months for book six to come...
So glad this book had humor and sarcasm in it or else I would have stopped reading. It was boring and the author expects you to believe a 30 year old gamer who ate junk food and didn’t know how to drive was capable of surviving in a zombie apocalypse.
I loved the book the main character was an everyday guy doing his best to survive. This was a nice break from all the crap books I've had to endure here lately!
I LOVED this one! The story is SO Entertaining and full of adventure! Tony is quite the storyteller! He adds humor, honesty and has his own brand of zaniness. I laughed when he thought because he is a Gamer that he knows how to use a real gun. In fact, I laughed numerous times at the things he did or thought about. I NEVER thought I would say that about a zombie book.
This author is brilliant! This is the second book I have enjoyed by him. He has a great sense of humor in his writing style. An example is one time Tony's talking about the zombies and refers to them as Man Munchers! He did stuff like that all throughout and is a synonym magician! I look forward to more from him!
I did listen to this on audio. This is my first time listening to James Meunier. He did an great job bringing Tony to life. He added so many vocal intonations that were spot on that I enjoyed him as much as the the story!
Tony was just an ordinary slacker, more interested in playing video games than in following world events. When he mixes an energy drink with some pharmaceuticals, he loses track of time and awakens to find himself in the middle of a zombie apocalypse!
This was a LOL look at one guy's inept attempts to survive while all around him the world is falling apart. Tony slowly learns to do things he never thought he would have to do (like drive a car and shoot a gun). By the end of the book, the unlikable nerd has evolved into a semi-Ramboesque figure.
The book is appropriately subtitled as tongue in cheek and the author has turned a apocalyptic disaster into a romp through pop culture and snacking!
The narrator was perfect for the antics of the main character and his performance made the book even more enjoyable. If you like your zombies to come with a side of fun, give this book a chance. You won't be disappointed!
This is a really fun read. How the lazy slacker survives the zombie apocalypse with the help of Monster Munch and a red dress. Tony the terrible online gamer wakes up after a heavy night to find the zombies have taken over. Then follows lots of scavenging, traveling the roads, despatching zombies with increasing skill.. A really fun mix of crude humour, gore and survival. Loved the storyline. James Meunier gives a top class performance, bringing the story to life or death as the case may be, Great stuff. I received a complimentary copy from the author and am leaving a honest voluntary review
I listened to the audio book. Did I mention hilarious? "Riding the Bull" and " Songs of the zombie choir" are some of the BEST book quotes EVER! The narrator's crisp British accent juxtaposes the ridiculous hilarity brilliantly. Seriously. If this had been narrated by an American actor, it would only have been half as funny. It might even have been awkward. The "stiff upper lip" gave it solemnity, even while it lent to its Monty Python-esque humor. Suprememly funny without being crass or tawdry. Well done!
It makes a nice change to read a stand-alone zombie story that has a good ending. It's very much in the cost catastrophe genre, and made a change from all the "let's see how evil people can be" The characters are ordinary, some good, some not, and the protagonist Tony is very believable. He has some cracking dialogue too. I enjoyed this, and eagerly await Mr. James' next offering.
I’m not exaggerating when I say this is the funniest zombie book I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I was laughing from start to finish, and then again any time I think back to certain scenes! Nick James has a natural ability to inject comedy into his writing. Brilliant storytelling, hilarious main character, 10/10 would recommend!
Funny and could be real, I always love apocalyptic stories which have some realism in them. Tony is funny and seems like the kind of guy we'd chat with down the pub. He is not an awesome hero of the bat and that's what makes it enjoyable. I obviously recommend this, it's a quick read and a nice change from some of the others in this genre.
I enjoyed this one! I'm a huge fan of anything zombie, and while this novel really has the zombies as a back-story, I liked the characters and the survival aspect of it. A couple of chuckles. I'll read more from the author. 3.5 stars. Would have been 4 with better editing.
I only noticed a couple mistakes in the writing. In one.... it's SHAUN of the Dead. Not Sean.
This book looks at the zombie apocalypse from the point of view of a regular guy. Which was refreshing and enjoyable after reading a lot of super soldier survivalist type of characters. It was a quick read, but funny and lighthearted. Enjoyed completely!
I really enjoyed this book, it was really easy to read and it grabbed you throughout. It made me smile, not laugh...and it really was different to blood gore bone crunching zombie books...
As a zombie lover I think this is a great book! I enjoyed it from cover to cover and while the author did a great job telling the story, I didn’t like how much slang I had to lookup.
Nick James has created a funny and entertaining story that sets itself apart from the average Walking Dead ripoff. This book follows an average Joe trying to survive with little to no skills to do so. This story draws you in and keeps you laughing from start to finish!
I laughed my head off. I love zombie novels. Some novels are scary with the characters seemly more in love with their guns, themselves and a chance to murder. I love the anti hero nature of this book. The book is brilliant.
It was a fun, quick read. Nice little palette cleanser if you’re reading a series or something and need a break. The main character is intentionally written as an annoying, love-to-hate, typical man kind of way. I liked the brief interlude of Zoe.
this book had me laughing in parts and as I read it I kept thinking about the walking dead tv show as it seems to follow that line of thinking. quick fast read.
