When I first began the book, within the first few chapters, I started wondering if I was going to be able to understand what was going on at all. Shayne has an incredible intellect which shines through his books, but also makes them an exercise in intelligence to read. I always forget that at first.
Then I get further into the book and I forget what my initial complaint was about. This incredible intellect weaves such a tapestry of mystery, faith, adventure, love and family, combining it all with myth and gods and good and evil, that I find myself mesmerized by his words. By his stories.
Callie is embroiled in a mess that seemed to have been created by her absence in Kansas City; her city. When she returns she finds the city believes she is dead, and evil has made her city it's home. Now the streets are running red with the blood this evil is shedding. She needs to stop it. But at what cost? She finds she doesn't know who she can trust anymore which tears at her soul. Burdened with the task of finding her allies to help her end the evil going on, Callie goes through even more trials that eventually lead her to the truth. And the truth is never what it seems. She ends up not knowing which end is up, and finding out so many new things about people she thought she had understood so well. It's a confusing time for Callie, yet she has never been clearer or more determined in knowing what needs to be done. Or does she?
There is the usual humor within this tale, as Shayne is master of innuendo, double meanings and one-liners, but the seriousness of the storyline ensures that you know this is not a comedy. A comedy of errors, maybe. But definitely a very serious tale of trials and tribulations of not just Callie, but of all her allies and of Kansas City itself.
This novel was wonderfully done. And if you can read Tolkien with ease, understanding all the wisdom he imparts, you'll enjoy Shayne Silvers and his many tales of good and evil and where they part or meet.
Looking forward to Godless to finish answering the many questions that always arise within these books. This was a moving and infinitely impressive novel, Mr. Silvers! So Very Very Well Done! But, then, we've come to expect that!

Wow, just wow. Finally, we are given some answers many questions us readers have had for so long. However, in true cruel author style, there are more posed. This latest installment in the Templeverse was a wild ride, and I think it’s the best one yet. Callie (we find out her name!!) has really come in to herself and is a wonderful character. Roland has turned in this one because of Callie’s extended absence, and she must deal with everything this has caused. In the middle of all of this, she learns many things, both good and bad. I can’t wait to read what’s coming next in these intertwined series. I just hope it’s soon because this one ended on a doozy! This is one of the few series that makes me wish I could read slower to really savor it. If you haven’t read this series, do so from the beginning or you’ll have no idea what’s going on and you really should. I really highly recommend this book/series and was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I read Black Sheep as part of the ARC team. I'm not a newbie to the Templeverse. I devour the books in all three series (Nate Temple, Feathers and Fire and Phantom Queen) as quickly as they are released, and twitch like an addict in withdrawal between releases. By now I should know that Mr. Silvers is going to answer questions while raising twice as many, then ending the story on a major cliffhanger. Its like waiting to find out if Jon Snow was really dead - multiple times a year.
The major characters in this book (Callie, Claire and Cain) all show major growth to their characters. I've never been the biggest fan of the character of Callie, but with this book she really started to grow on me. Maybe because it feels like she's starting to grow into a real adult.
There is so much to say about this book, but very little I can say without spoiling the story. Its another rip-roaring, gut punch of a roller coaster from the master of thrill rides. All the humor and snark we've come to know and love is there. The emotional moments are there. ITS ALL THERE!!
If you're a Templeverse fan, you won't be disappointed. If you're new to the Templeverse - stop, go back and start with Obsidian Son (shame on you for trying to jump in towards the middle. Go to the beginning!!)

I was lucky enough to receive an advance reader's copy of Black Sheep by Shayne Silvers. Callie returns from her year long absence to find out that her city has become a battleground between supernaturals. She also discovers that her mentor and her absence may be the cause.
This book answers so many questions in a satisfying way for The Templeverse Chronicles. It does so with action, heart and adventure. I was left both satisfied and wanting more. The series continues to improve with each book, which is difficult to imagine as all books have been excellent.
I can't wait for the next book and highly recommend this series.

Callie is back in Kansas but the city isn't exactly the place she remembers. In her absence, all hell has broken loose and to make matters worse, Callie has been left looking like a demon. Which makes for some awkward reunions with friends who believe her dead. There are some big reveals in this book and some interesting characters are introduced. With each book, we see Callie grow as a character and, in this one, we see how she reacts when the rug is pulled completely out from under her and her life is turned upside down. Lines are crossed, boundaries are drawn, and people who were once friends and allies are now out for Callie's blood. Luckily, she has the worlds first murder at her side and an emotionally unstable werebear at her back. What more could one ask for?
Action packed and, at times, hilarious, this book had me hooked from the get-go. As always, the twists and turns in Black Sheep left me reeling. I don't know how Shayne creates these crazy, brilliant masterpieces but I cannot wait for the next one. I'm already itching for my next TempleVerse fix.

Ever since I opened Obsidian Son just over a year ago, I have been a slave to Shayne Silvers and his Templeverse. And I can't say I have ever been happier.
Black Sheep begins with Callie still in King Solomons Mines, having just been told that she has been gone from Kansas City for a year, and everyone thinks she is dead. Determined to go back and let everyone know she is alive, she passes on having a good look around and speeds off back to KC.
What has become of her city? What has happened to her friends? And why does she look like a demon?
The answers to these questions, and many more besides are found in this book. But it's not as easy as you might think. Callie is forced to face some truths, face the truth about her friends, and to make the hardest decision she has ever had to make.
As usual, I struggled to tear my eyes from the pages. It took me a little longer this time however. Nine hours instead of my usual six. I had to take a break to orient myself, to adjust to news, and prepare myself for the next revelation. I have become so emotionally involved with these characters, learning more and more about them, that I find it difficult to remove myself from their stories. And now I have to wait until book 7 to find out if everything was worth it. Shayne Silvers has outdone himself this time with his ability to leave you begging for more. Hopefully, the wait will not be long.
Little reminder here that, although this is book 6 in the Feathers & Fire series, this is book 29 in the Templeverse. It does have a crossover with other characters in the Templeverse, which will have freaks all over the world squealing, so you may want to orientate yourself with the companion series.

Black sheep is another great addition to the Templeverse. Callie is back from her journey, and St Louis is in chaos. She sees that her former mentor and father figure has turned into a blood thirsty monster as he had promised. Callie takes on the mission to cleanse St. Louis and put down the once Shepard turned vampire. This installment is a serious page turner. Shayne finds a way to weave in different pantheons as well as have some twists and turns that will blow your mind. Also in this installment, we get some answers to a lot of questions. We also get more questions too. Definitely a must read.

Kansas City is so far Off The Rails its become Hell On Earth and The Red Pastor has Staked His Claim in the most brutal manner possible.
Can Callie fix this In Time?? Will a Former Friend kill her first?

Wow! Callie really grows as a person and as a power in this book. It's been wonderful to be part of her journey through the Templeverse. She's gone a long way from the slightly uncertain girl barely getting her feet wet in the real world to now, in Black Sheep. So many incredible moments. Some awe-inspiring, some put there seemingly just to make me facepalm. Still others made me literally yell out loud at what I just read! This is a must-read for any fan of UF, and an absolute keeper in Callie's tale. I can't wait for Godless!

Callie has returned to find her city trapped and under thrall to Roland, now called The Red Pastor. Gone off the deep end with Callies' supposed death since she hasn't returned in a year, Roland has turned into a monster in his grief. Now the master of the city, he has vampires that don't stop at committing atrocities. Callies greatest test will be taking out Roland, a man of god, and like a father to her,before he was turned into a vampire. This book was a very philosophical soul searching book. Very Zen. Read in order. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.

Old enemies are not who we thought and old friends are not who they used to be. Callie has returned to Kansas City but things have changed, and not for the better. For every question answered, another pops up to take its place.

So many reveals in Black Sheep! Callie learns a lot about herself and makes some life changing decisions. Black Sheep will have you sitting on the edge of your seat! If you have read the previous books in the Temple Verse, Sit back with your favorite drink (you will probably need it), Buckle up and get ready to have your mind blown!

Read it TWICE, at least. Shayne has taken us on a ride yet again. Callie grows exponentially as she learns more about her parents' planning, Solomon's place (now hers) and her Godfather? Kansas City will never be the same. This book has a direct line to GODLESS, coming in May? Can't wait.

Of all the fan theories to be right, he just haaaaaaad to go with that for her full name, good gods. I can no longer associate the name "Shayne Silvers" and "subtlety" in the same galactic zip code.
The sixth outing of Callie Penrose is quite notably her strongest installment to date, possibly Silvers' strongest work, full stop.
Even with the longer, more developed build-up for Nate Temple and the compressed, rapid development of Quinn MacKenna, neither of the two series have as of yet had an installment that strikes on such a heavy, self-contained plot focus that also manages to loop in multiple longer standing story threads in Callie's personal story and just as much as with the greater universal plot that has been so repeatedly elevated in stakes across all three series. It follows in the wake of the deep introspection and identity crisis of the previous installment with evident carryover of tone, but also drags back into more rapid, overwhelming exterior developments that had been bubbling up in the background for quite some time in the previous books.
Time skips can be a tricky thing to manage decently in literature, but managing to completely transpose entire characters and their relationships into such new, blatantly twisted territory that makes the transition feel sudden but also lengthily prolonged and worn out is a considerable feat, possibly one of the best developments Silvers has crafted thus far just in the simple terms of its prose and structure. The entire environment feels warped and wrung out, striking a balance between urban gang warfare and fully fledged post-supernatural apocalypse.
The characters and how they engage with this nearly destroyed version of their old world and life bring to bear the stark overlying theme of what despair truly is, how it slowly creeps up and erodes everything inside and out of a person and through them the world around them. Darkness feels heavier, emptiness feels even more hollow, and to those trapped literally and metaphorically between opposing, overwhelming powers seem to have had much of the color and music of their very nature bled out of them to varying degrees. Callie herself is almost a beacon of life and energy by comparison, a virile force contrasting the bleakness that enveloped her home and the people she cares for.
Conflict itself is in no greater or lesser supply than the previous book, but now each battle with brawn and magic also seems balanced with battles of clashing emotions and circumstance. Callie's identity crisis has made progress but still no full resolution as even disregarding the weightier questions of her birthrights and her grander purposes crafted before she was even born, the very nature of who she is and who she sees herself to be is still riddled with uncertainty and hesitation. By further contrast though, her actions and the purposes behind said actions strike stronger as she sees the costs and consequences of what her absence has resulted in, and throws herself back into the role of judge, jury and executioner to balance the scales.
And as usual for every question we have answered in the Templeverse, three more pop up to replace it. The answers or resolutions however are no small or insignificant things of course. Learning one's life and purpose are supposedly laid out before birth is juxtaposed with the knowledge that choice and free will can rage against the tide of destiny. That trust comes not only in what feels logical, but the things that feel the most illogical of all, as some things are tied not in oaths and motivations, but in bonds of blood.
And that suffering unto itself is as significant and necessary as alleviating it, because all things come in balance, that good can lead to evil and evil can lead to good. Even if at first glance the good is more like evil, as to murder Hope is to embrace Despair.
Plus there are ninjas now, can't just glance right over that now can we.
Overall the book feels like a wild, jarring ride from one catastrophic mess to the next, but in the best of ways and the breathing room it allows in between is just as striking for how heavy and overwhelming the moments can be, peaceful or otherwise. Rather than elevate the stakes of the world itself, the characters now are the ones being elevated, and Silvers makes it clear that their changes herald much more yet to come. As always I await what comes next.

Overall the book feels like a wild, jarring ride from one catastrophic mess to the next, but in the best of ways and the breathing room it allows in between is just as striking for how heavy and overwhelming the moments can be, peaceful or otherwise. Rather than elevate the stakes of the world itself, the characters now are the ones being elevated, and Silvers makes it clear that their changes herald much more yet to come. As always I await what comes next.

A book this kickass deserves its own soundtrack!
Callie Penrose is back to mete out justice in Black Sheep, Book 6 in Shayne Silver’s Feathers and Fire series.
Callie returns after a year to Kansas City and finds that all is decidedly NOT well back home! The streets are rife with tension and the possibility of violence exists at every turn. To her confusion, Roland, the same man who’s been a kind of father to her, is apparently responsible for the depravity...
But he’s not that man anymore. He’s letting monsters roam the streets to do unspeakable things. Unacceptable things.
To make matters worse, Callie has a different homecoming than she expects because no one recognizes her. She suddenly looks and smells like a black-haired demon! “Her kind” definitely aren’t welcome in town by any faction.
Callie’s heavenly ties also prevent her from trying to talk sense into Roland. There’s a barrier around her church that only those expressly permitted by Roland may pass, and he’s isolated himself inside. He’s erected a second barrier around the city perimeter to keep meddlers out while essentially keeping everyone else hostage, too.
Without being able to turn to her allies in Kansas City, and without being able to leave for help, Callie is forced to grasp at whatever straws she can find. Because Roland, or at least the person he used to be, would want her to.

Five stars for the ending.
This book started out a little slow but gets five stars for the mind-boggling ending.
Callie Penrose has just come through the harrowing adventure of the Doors where she has been learning some of life’s secrets and wound up at Solomon’s Temple, the place she was trying to get to all along. She is just relaxing with Solomon and Richard (aka Last Breath) and Cain and planning to find answers to some of the questions that brought her on this journey to begin with when she is informed that she has been missing from Kansas City for a whole year.
When she returns to check on things, she discovers that her old mentor, Roland, has gone off the deep end in her absence and is running a massive gang of vampires and werewolves who seem to be intent on murdering and abusing people.
To make matters worse, Callie suddenly seems to have the appearance of a demon. When she meets people who were formerly her friends, they start right in attacking her, and it is only with great difficulty (if at all) that she can convince them that it is really her.
Fortunately, Callie makes a lot of new friends and allies. But, as so often happens in the Templeverse, nothing is as it seems at first, and it turns out that the big ritual that Roland is planning is small potatoes compared to the danger that is coming for everybody.
Will Callie’s new friends and new powers be enough? Will she be able to save Roland? Or to kill him? Or even to save herself?

Here we have the newest book in the Feathers and Fire series by Shayne Silvers. After a year, Callie returns to Kansas City and finds utter chaos. Everyone thought she was dead! Roland Haviar, her former mentor, goes on a crazy spree to avenge her death by destroying everyone and everything in his path.
Callie Penrose finds lots out about herself and really experiences some major growth in this book. Loyalties are tested and, with new friends and old to juggle, she has to find a way to bring them back on her side again. This isn’t an easy task when her appearance was altered so that she looks like a demon and everyone she trusted is after her!
With the author’s flamboyant style, the reader is taken on a wild, hilarious adventure that never stops. There is so much energy in this book and it empowers the reader to hang on for dear life as the story line races onward at its usual breakneck pace. Callie has come back to Kansas City. After her harrowing journey through "The Doors" to claim her birthright, she comes home to find that a year has passed in her absence, and things have changed. Not for the better. Callie is believed to be dead by those that know her, and the Kansas City She left behind has become a nightmare version of itself, with supernatural freaks roaming the streets in gangs, and friends and allies either on the run, or ruling with an iron fist and shady intentions. Callie's reappearance should help put all back to right, but a sneaky curse has all of her friends seeing a demon when they look at her, instead of a friend. Callie has to find a way to make her allies see her, and prepare for a final showdown with the person who is running this twisted KC, the person she s=trusts most in the world. This book has much of what you have come to expect from Shayne Silvers, snarky comments, inside jokes, big revelations, and more questions that arise. However, this book also has a feeling of change. Much of Callie's life is changing as powers, revelations and destinies become more clear. This book definitely has the feeling of a pivot point in the Feathers and Fire series.

Almost a filler book but still good
This was good. I would have appreciated more interaction between Callie and Roland and maybe instead of dragging that out, doing it 1/3 of the way through and moving on to the Dracula situation. I'm not sure if it's just the writing style of Silvers or supposed to be a purposeful recurring theme that mentors and best friends and girlfriends go
from being protagonists to villains or at least betrayers. I keep getting disappointed. I liked Ryan from whiskey ginger series. I finally came around to liking Indy, Nate's girlfriend. His first best friend, meh, didnt know him too well so didn't care too much. The detective/almost love interest of Callie's and now Roland! I really liked Roland. It shows a talent for the co authors to form a personal connection with their readers, but sheesh. I almost don't trust anyone. I find Claire to be obnoxious so maybe he'll kill her off soon. That's the only personal friend that I really wouldnt find being offed from the series. Wow that was harsh. Anyway, good book but I get sad and tired from these judge jury and executioner types killing people without hesitarion who used to mean a lot to them, AND usually were coerced or seriously manipulated by being that way out classed them.

I love the Templeverse series, I’m currently reading Goodless, and I'm also going by the reading order, the books are amazing, I love the characters and Shayne’s world building is truly awesome. Callie has become so strong in her own right and trying to determine her purpose and learning how many events unfolded before her birth was something I did not see coming in this book. We finally learn her name!!! YASS!
However, and I say this for Black sheep and Godless, pages and pages and pages of the the same thing over and over again, Callie’s thoughts, saying how she should analyze this or that over and over again throughout the whole book. Her talking about what Roland was doing in Kansas city showed up at least 4 different times throughout the middle of the book. It was very repetitive in my opinion and unfortunately I'm experiencing the same thing with Godless.
If it wasn’t for that the book would be a 5 star in my opinion, but a lot of the times I was just rolling my eyes saying ‘oh my god, this again’. We get the point there is no need to keep repeating things like that, I can assuredly say that at least 10 pages of this book is her thinking and remembering the same things. But regardless of all that, Shayne is a genius and I love these books.

Incredible! Holy Cliffhanger too.
The Templeverse is easily my favorite series (or collection of them.) I am always embarrassingly excited when a new one is released, but I don't recall having ever been as impatient as I am for the next Feathers and Fire installment (the upcoming "Godless." Is that the right title? Man, I just saw it!) Black Sheep leaves us with a MOTHER of a (REALLY GOOD) Cliffhanger.
Anyway, about the series... I could not possibly recommend more wholeheartedly that you start at the beginning, with the Nate Temple series, and follow the reading order from there. The Feathers and Fire series starts around book six or so, I think, of the regular Nate Temple series. It's entirely worth it.
Every single book of the three intertwining series are absolutely worth grabbing hold of and enjoying the ride through this brilliant "Templeverse" that Shayne Silvers has created. Amazing, hilarious, characters. Action packed page turners await you... READ THEM ALL! You won't be disappointed. Promise.

An Outstanding Weave of Revelations, Mysteries, & Literary/Cultural References...
The first five books in this series each unveiled a few secrets about Callie's backstory per novel. This was a whirlwind of revelations that served to answer so many questions. I put the book down, more than once, just to absorb the ramifications of what the author was sewing together.
In spite of these details, Shayne Silvers knitted a litany of possibilities and 'what ifs' into this mystic masterpiece. It had me begging for more. On top of that, the book was massively laden with Easter Eggs that brought laughter, gasps, head-slaps, awe, and absolute delight.
This sixth book opened a world of possibilities that will resound across all of Shayne's book series for YEARS. It was an impressive quilt of supernatural pantheons, mystic creatures, my favorite poetry, my favorite comics, and so much more. I only wish every book wrapped me in such an excellent blanket of literary entertainment.

Black Sheep : Feathers and Fire Book #6
Wow!! I think this book is the best in the series, so far! Heart stopping, page turning, nail biting action from page one until the end, which leaves you hanging. Grrrrr!
Callie had gone through so much in the last book and now after a year away from Kansas City, she was back. But her Kansas City was locked down and in serious danger from vampires, werewolves and even the local police.
The story tells of Callie making decisions and actions to try and help save her city along with the help of strange new allies. Claire, Cain, Alucard, Xuanwu, Qinglong, Eae, Sheperds, Ryuu, Roland and even Samael are just a few of the characters involved.
Since the ending it left up in the air, I'll just have to wait and see how Callie and her Godfather handle trying to live and at the same time defeat the number one vampire in the world. Bring it on Shayne Silvers!!

This is an exciting book jumping right in from the last Feathers and Fire Book. Callie has been away and all hell is breaking loose in Kansas City. It's up to her and her team of cohorts to help her get the town on it's feet again. What has happened to Roland??? How could this be??? Shayne Silvers takes us farther out there than every before. Just when you think it cannot get any better, he slips up numerous answers to questions that were driving his readers nuts, not like we aren't already. But, there they were and it opened up even more questions, darn you Shayne Silvers!! This is a great book and truly a wonderful part of the Templeverse. Jump in with us, we have a ball going over the books and stuff is getting really interesting!!!

Throw away everything you thought you knew!
Okay not everything but damn it's close! It's an emotional rollercoaster for everyone, especially Callie. Kansas City has fallen to a tyrant while she's been gone. Schemes upon schemes. A brief appearance by Hope and Alice. Callie murders Hope. Cain will never be my get away driver (Alucard's either after this). Callie gives into despair. Then she's off to fight a few big bads.
I've laughed and I've cussed Master Silvers throughout this book. Nate used to be my favorite character in the Templeverse. Callie just surpassed him. Every book, she seems to be more and more relatable to me in personal ways. Shayne has a way of making his characters so real, even when they are Freaks. Callie reminds me, we always get back up!

Right after Callie found the Temple of Solomon and found out about her ancestry she was told that she had been gone for over a year and that those closest to her thought she was dead. Now her city is worse than ever and even some she called friends have turned to the darkness. Now Callie has to come back, to take what is hers, to fix what was broken. To find more answers to her questions. If you haven't gotten to this point, go no further without reading all about it in the previous books. If you have read all of them, then get ready for the wildest ride yet, for Callie to come back in all her glory. One of the best fantasy series going just keeps getting better. More revelations, more questions, more depth and more snark. Become a Black Sheep, because Callie is waiting for you

Everything Callie thought she knew comes crashing down on her. Shayne writes books with so many layers that when you peel one back there is always another. The insight and plot twists are so mind bending I might never recover. Everything has multiple meaning and no one is what you think. Callie is by far the best female character I have read about. She is my inspiration. WWCD What Would Callie do is a new phrase of mine. The humor, snarkiness, and heroism is my favorite things about Callie. Shayne has made me smile and proud that he can write a female character so well. I am truly grateful for him and his views on touchy and hurtful subjects. Way to master characters and bring hope to people and their lives.

Oh. My. Dear. Lord. How does Shayne Silvers come up with this stuff. It’s so incredibly complicated that it makes Game of Thrones look like child’s play. Yet somehow Black Sheep: Feathers and Fire Book 6 is still easy to follow along. It’s so dark yet so fun. It’s urban fantasy devil & demons unreality but so relatable and genuine. This is one talented author and one incredibly cool and fun book. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises. The book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, and it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.
