From sex with the ex to first dates, from the first look to the morning after, Boom leaves nothing out. His straight-talking advice exposes women's weaknesses and is invaluable to any woman determined to avoid common mistakes that lead to heartbreak.

This unique guide will show women not only how to find true love with Mr. Right, but also how to avoid Mr. Never-Gonna-Happen, Mr. Infidelity, and a variety of other Mr. Wrongs.

Awhile back, I was up at night wondering, What is the worst book ever written? Then one day, as if recognizing my query, April lent me this one. I'm already not a fan of relationship books, but this went above and beyond any horrible writing I ever thought to have existed. I'll just briefly mention that the schlocko editing job didn't help matters either. Noun-pronoun agreement, people!

Anyway, I read this book on the bus a few days ago and made it to page 50, only because my commute is about 40 minutes each way and I have an iron stomach. The first 10 pages are non-sensical babble in which he whines, "I used to be a pimp, but now I'm straight! Don't judge me!" He spends so much of the book talking about himself and all the bad stuff he used to do, it makes you wonder if he should have penned a poorly written memoir instead of a poorly written relationship book.

He also offers sage advice like, "Before you start seeing a man, see if he has any child molestation charges" and "When you get home, leave your heels on so your man can continue to admire your butt." These and other gems made this book totally unrelatable to any normal single woman in the dating world, and his frequent mentions of God and praying do even more to alienate.

But I must say I'm inspired. It's good to know that even if I somehow dropped 70 IQ points, I could still be a writer if I wanted to.

(cut/pasted/editted from my reply to Platkat's review)

I recommended that book for comic value ONLY!!! It's been sitting on the top of my magazine rack as a fantastic conversation starter for months. Just look at the title! And the author! CLASSIC!!!

My magazine rack now has the flashy new Bust Magazine with EVE on the cover sitting right on top. Having recently lent this book to PlatKat, I asked the rack when it wanted this book back and it said, "Eh, whenevah..."

It says it all in the title. Working at a bookstore, I came across books that I wouldn't usually purchase and read for pleasure... but I did read a handful of books from the section where I most often worked and this was one of them. It was oddly realistic coming from the view of a man who used to be a rapper. It's funny to hear what men truly think of women and how backwards they really are... they want one thing in a girlfriend and something entirely different in a woman they would take home to meet their mother and turn into a wife. Why can't men be more simple and find the same qualities appealing in a girlfriend or wife?

I wish I'd had this book when I was younger! Although the Goodreads Genre for this book just shows "African American", the things in this book really apply to women of all races (I'm white). I appreciate the author's honesty and straightforward approach to relationship advice from the point of view of a man. It just reads so much like real life, you can tell he is writing about things he really experienced. And the writing style is great! It's like he's right in front of me, talking to me.

Younger women might be put off by the title, but from the viewpoint of an older (66) woman, the things in this book are things you really need to know! I hope you will give it a chance.

Don't miss the last few pages. There are tons of resources to help with relationships, raising kids, going through divorce, etc.

This is a practical reading with great insights coming from a man who've done it all. His love for God helped him grow to help women to be vigilant in finding the right man. Would recommend this book and will be an amazing reread tok.

I am GRACIOUSLY giving this book 2 stars, and they are (mostly) for the title (which, frankly, I think is HILARIOUS). I didn't like the way it was written. This isn't something that I'd have bought if I'd been able to pick up in the store and read a sample of the way it was written is all I'm gonna say... There were PAGES on how to deal with men who have baby-mama-drama and PAGES on how sex is like a drug, and don't be a crack whore. (Okay, that last bit wasn't word for word, but... it was close.) I agreed with some of the ideas (the obvious, don't be physical with someone you're not in a committed relationship with, and don't expect someone to love you when all they're looking for is the physicality and you give it to them), but the way things were worded, and the scenarios he describes just weren't up my alley. I am, after all, the girl who says good-bye after I find out the dude has a record. (That's right, without giving him a chance. So shoot me.) It's good information, but it was stuff I already knew. Mostly I paid $3 for the title on my bookshelf. (And it was worth every penny.)

Old News For Old Playas

"A Guide to Understanding Men" taught me absolutely nothing. I am very disappointed in author Big Boom for giving this old and known advice. This is the millennium and most of the issues have occurred and are already known - or should be known. I expected this book to teach me some new techniques about men. Offer some new insight. However, it did not, and as a result, it was not good. It refreshed my memory of the past relationships I encountered in my life. I felt like this book should've targeted "chicken-heads" or younger adults, but it was not suitable for women.

Overall, I rate this book a 3. I believe Big Boom could have added more updated news about "THE GAME," however the Game remains the same. I will urge younger adults to read this book because maybe it will make a difference in their lives.

I expected more out of this book because the title sounded so great. Whereas the former pimp/lady-hater author gives some good advice on women needing to love one's self first, he also blames alot of issues on women. I appreciate that the author changed his life around by coming to God and beginning a one-woman loving relationship, but seriously, this book should never have been published. The grammar is horrible, he rambles from one topic to the next, he starts giving good advice and then cuts it short by starting a new topic, etc. It's not worth anymore of my time to discuss.

Very interesting, makes you think about things you wouldn't have depending on ones relationship status. Not done with it seeing as I'm such a busy wife, mother, sister, daughter and friend but it seems to be very hard to put down, when I am able to read it.

The title was blunt and the content didn't surprise me with that in mind. The book was a reality check on how to stop going back to dead-end relationships. It had a modernized version of a health relationship could be for someone who is looking for a change.

This is a horribly written book that you should not take seriously. With that in mind, I think you will have yourself a nice and hearty laugh.
