I'm not entirely sure why I had a hard time getting into this one. Marcus and Flavia's backstory confused me a little--the names are Roman, but then how did they end up in Jerusalem? That was never explained, that I saw, and it kept nagging in the back of my head. Also, I couldn't quite believe that a four-year-old and a baby had managed to survive completely on their own at that age. As far as the story itself, I liked it and wanted to enter into it, but--maybe it was just that everything moved so quickly and so much was happening at once? I just never was able to get past the surface and really feel the emotions that I wanted to. I know this author can get me there; I just wonder if maybe more time to get to really know and feel for the characters would have helped. There were a lot of depths there that I would have liked to explore a lot more!
