WHAT. THE. HECK. JUST. HAPPENED.

So...yeah. Now I'm trying not to throw my book across the room in frustration. I haven't read a book with this many cliffhangers and open ended plot points in months. Man, that felt good to read that.

I just can't believe it.

Finally, the mole is revealed! We know who is Vesper Three. And why they did it. But I still have trouble believing. For someone so smart, they should have realized Vesper One's hatred towards Cahills is too strong.

Poor Dan. He really suffered the worst. No longer the carefree child he was before the Hunt. Now he is gloomy and dark and plotting to make a serum that hasn't been tested in over 5 centuries to defeat an evil organization hellbent on destroying the world.

What could go wrong?

Honestly personally this was one of the more tame/mellow of this Cahill spinoff series with a few intense initial spikes that then kind of tamper off, in my opinion probably to build up to a climactic final book of this first branch off of the initial franchise. That being said Atticus was super cool and developed a lot more as a character in this one and I love the attention to detail they give to these stories with real history and theology mixed within everything and I’m always left wanting to do at least a few side google searches.

"I thought you at least had SOME sense of honor -- in your sick, twisted way" HOW COULD YOU DO THIS?"

Amy and Dan Cahill, with the Rosenblooms, Jake and Atticus, are back in the States for the next artifact Vesper 1 wants them to steal so that he will let the 7 hostages go free. This time, the Voynich, the mysterious manuscript found in 1912. But that's not even the worst of their troubles. They have found out that there is a mole in their organization. They have to stop him...or her...before V3 divulges all the Cahill secrets! And steal the Voynich! How will they pull this off?

This was better than Shatterproof in my opinion. There's more twists and turns, more surprises, more things that leave you with your mouth wide open! And the cliffhanger! GRRR. We have to find out in Day of Doom to see what happens when

And something really shocking was the end result of all this. I would have never expected that the Vespers would do something like this! actually I would, but still!

This was an interesting book as you finally learn who the Vesper mole is and their motivation. However, the book seems to be pretty inconsistent. I think that has to do with the fact each book is by a different author and I'm not sure there was great collaboration between the author of the previous book and this one. At the end of book four, Jonah has what is a rather life changing event. Jonah and Hamilton virtually disappear from this book till the very end but the major event from the previous book seems to be having very little impact on him despite what was said at the end of the previous one. It makes me wonder if the author knew what happened to Jonah in the prior installment.

Additionally, the Vesper's series is really ramping up the violence compared to the original 39 clues series. In the original 39 clues, only two characters died and one of those was minor. There have been several murders/killings in this series. This includes of-screen mentions of minor characters to the deaths of both supporting and major characters. An irritating aspect is that Ian's involvement and the side story with his mother has virtually disappeared during the last two books.

when I tell you the ending of this one had me GASPING and clutching my pearls like WHOA

this series is so much more intense than the first one and I'm eating it up, tbh (I also remember very little about the actual plot of it overall so I'm on the edge of my seat)

can't wait to get emotionally wrecked by "day of doom" 👍

I started the original series when it came out and have been reading the books since. I have to admit, I'm glad this is the penultimate book - it is time for the series to end! The storyline is still perfectly fine but it really is starting to feel like the story has just been dragged on for a bit too long - over 3 years since the first book, with one book about every three months. I still love the whole concept of different authors writing different parts. The characters are so well known at this point though that I couldn't even tell you that it was a different author writing. The story itself was good and I admit that they caught me, the mole was not the person I thought it would be. Vesper One definitely was not at all who I thought it would be. These are both good things when you have invested this much time in a series - the authors are still able to surprise me. I would still recommend this series for students in grades 5 and 6. It is still a great series that shares little bits and pieces about history and that is one of the things that first drew me to the series. I'm sure that I scored the book as high as I did (I'm not convinced this book really was a 3) because I knew the story was coming to an end. I really do hope there won't be another twist and another series, and from what I have read, this is not going to happen. Phew.

Ok. First things first, I must say this. This to me, beats Percy Jackson, the Pendragon series, and the previous 39 Clues. To all those Rick Riordan fans out there: I'm sorry. This book is amazing. First of all, the cover is fantastic. With plenty of puzzles in the book, it makes it very frustrating to remember your page number. The search for the Voynich Folio 74 is filled with danger, and an old enemy. I can't wait for the "final" book by David Baldacci, because OH BOY does it end on a cliffhanger. It reveals the entire Vesper plot (as of now) AND has an insanely fast-moving plot. 39 Clues fans new and old will not be disappointed by this installment. The only downer? Linda Sue Park isn't writing the next one. However, there's always room for improvement. I wish they revealed the Vesper plot in the next one, rather than this one. The reason mainly being they told the plot in the space of two pages. Two pages. You read four and a half books filled to the brim with suspense, and you take most of it away. In two pages. Ah well. Such is life. However, those who haven't read this, I strongly recommend it and leave you with three words: Machina fini mundi.

I enjoyed this installment it the series very much. I am invested into the characters' lives and feel their pain whenever they get hurt. I found this book in particular to have a bit more violence than the rest, although I don't think its too much for a middle grader to handle. I did find two mistakes in the writing, though they weren't big ones, but still annoyed me a bit. Lol. The book was well written, apart from that and the suspense kept me at the edge of my seat. A very good read and I look forward to reading more of this series.

This series is good for readers who like action, history and a good evil vs young chase for valuable and rare items. I found I was lost most of the time because of the lack of interest in geography and history each book presented, and the cohesive storyline was spread across so many locations I found it hard to ground myself in the story most of the time. It is interesting that the story continues to be written by different authors and yet still feels like a connected story, much like episodes of a TV series.

I love the 39 Clues series. I have since the first series and I'm finding this second series isn't disappointing. So much so that I made sure I was first on the waiting list for the digital audio copy of this book.

Trust No One is the fourth book in the second series and continues Amy, Dan, Atticus and Jake's quest to both steal for Vesper One and figure out what he's doing so they can stop him. This time, they've been sent to Yale to steal the Voynich manuscript. But what they need from it isn't with the rest of the manuscript and they follow clues in Atticus and Jake's mom's e-mail to Brazil to find it before Vesper One's deadline and the death of a hostage.

The book was a quick listen that still managed to keep me glued to my headphones. Particularly when Sinead met up with Amy and Dan and it wasn't clear whether they would find out in time that she was the mole, or if she was going to try to frame Ethan for that. I kept remembering the hope I had while reading the previous book, Shatterproof, that the mole wouldn't turn out to be Sinead. Amy deserves a good girl friend.

Here are some quick notes, in bullet format, regarding the book:

I'm enjoying the love triangle between Amy, Jake and Ethan. Both the guys are so wonderful that I'm having a hard time deciding who to root for.
Dan's wending his way toward danger with the formula for the serum. I wonder what consequences it's going to have for him in the future.
The threat to Atticus also has me curious. My guess is because he's a Guardian, even though he doesn't know much about anything since his mother didn't have a chance to tell him.
The identity of Vesper Two didn't surprise me in the least. It also doesn't surprise me that this person is going to double-cross Vesper One.
Once again, David Pitu impressed me with his reading, giving very distinctive voices to each of the characters so you could always tell who was talking.

As always, the action was well-paced throughout the book, giving nice moments of lull where you find out a bit more about Jake and his relationship with his mom between the moments when the four of them are desperately trying to save the hostages. There wasn't as much happening with the hostages as there had been in previous books, though we did get to feel a bit more sadness with another loss. (That seems to be a theme throughout each book - someone seems to die.)

The biggest surprise, however, was the big reveal of Vesper One's plans at the end. It was NOT anything I saw coming and it make me want the next book nownownow. Unfortunately, I've got to wait until March for the next one! (But it would make a great birthday gift.)

This book did exactly what it was supposed to do - ratchet the suspense up before the big climax. And it did it in spades. There are still so many unanswered questions that I suspect that the last book will be constant action.

While most of the 39 Clues books make an effort to stay on a fairly historical track, with a bit of manufactured history thrown in, the final couple books always just throw out things that are so far from the truth that its place as a semi-educational series is just destroyed.

We get a few revelations here. Who the mole among the Cahills is, which made me feel a bit silly, as it's the person who felt very tacked-on at the beginning of this sub-series. And, well...tacked on at the end of the previous series, really. As if the collective authors decided they needed a villain and just yanked one out and were like "look, they're important, they've always been important, see!"

I kind of rolled my eyes a bit at the reveal of the Vesper's final goal, since it feels a bit over-dramatic and, well, impractical?

Still, we're given a fairly unexpected ending, which I have to congratulate. Books of build up and I was expecting there to be a last-minute swerve, but nope. Woah.

It's a bridging book. I'll be continuing the series, but, overall, the big reveals were small and the main plot of this entire thing is now such a cliche. Probably not Park's fault, as they do all develop the plot together, but kind of disappointing, nonetheless.

A pretty sappy read mostly focused on emotional outbursts and love triangles in a series where people have been kidnapped and are facing death while the stakes are higher than ever as the entire world hangs in the balance.

Even are adventurers aren't as safe as they used to be anymore and all this books goes into detail about is being an emotional wreck.

But hey, one book away from the finale and we get the grand reveal and all the pieces that should've been presented books ago finally show up on the board all at once, near the ending.

The story does fianlly progress and that's pretty mcuht he only redeeming feature of this book. Otherwise, I'd probably rate it 2 stars. Maybe one of the worst books in the franchise, but I'm yet to read the rest of the franchise. Here's to hoping that the rest are of a better mark than this.

What is this with the female authors of this series taking Amy's characterization back to the 19th century?
Haddix took Amy and made her whiny and bossy.
Park makes her curl up into a little ball of "I can't do this anymore" so Dan has to come and save the day?

Really?

Add to that the fact that the mystery is just sort of...sidelined (seriously, the Voynich manuscript is so amazing and it got turned into just a McGuffin for the kids to find a missing piece?) to give more time to the attempts on Atticus...

We saw so little of the hostages, except for a character death (which itself seemed like it was just done for drama), and even Ted's realization gets swept aside to get back to the main cast.

Basically, I just found this one really, really frustrating.

Quick read! This newest installment of the Cahills vs. Vespers series was really good! Filled with action and fight scenes, I think the kids in my library will enjoy it. We finally find out who the Cahill mole is and what the Vespers are up to. And spoiler alert: One of the hostages does die in this book. Dan becomes stronger as Amy starts to struggle in this book. Usually it was the other way around. These are definitely darker than the original series, but as the kids who read them have grown up, so have the characters and content of the books. This one leaves you on a major cliff-hanger, so I am wishing book 6 comes out quickly!!

I’ve come to be prepared for anything and everything in this series, and that’s just about what I got from this installment of the Cahill versus Vespers series.

Linda Sue Park weaves a story that includes double-crosses, assassins, a trip to Brazil, a page from a centuries-old manuscript stuck in a crack, the death of one of the hostages, a knife fight and a mental breakdown by Amy…Whoa.

In all this, we *finally* get a sense of what the Vespers are planning – of course, it isn’t anything good! Still, it’s too frantic and too unbelievable.

I can’t wait to be done with this series – one more!

Wow! This book was extremely intense; so many ups, downs, and left turns everywhere! A lot of shocking things happen, a few things some readers might see coming, but others are a definite surprise to anyone that reads these books.

Join Amy, Dan, & everyone else that gets caught up in the hunt for the next piece of ransom for Vesper 1. This time it is a missing piece of a historical item that they have to search the globe for. Read it to see what will happen next!

This series has been building suspense since the start and now it almost over. I cannot wait to read the next and final book in this series to see how everything will come to a conclusion.

Was looking at my recently-read section and realized I hadn’t written a review yet!!!

This book was a really good addition to the second 39 Clues series. :) However, there was some bad language in this one.

The books are written by various authors, and some of them include some minor bad language in theirs. 😂

However, I greatly enjoyed this one!!! Can’t wait to finish off the series and move on to the next. :)

Great, just great. I've marathoned the first five books of this spin-off series, only to find the ending of this one to be a cliffhanger. I've rummaged through our bookshelf in search for the final installment, Day of Doom, but it turns out my brother hasn't bought it yet! Now I have no other choice but to do what I hate doing most: waiting.

At this point, I'm only reading these books because I've made it this far and I want to know
how it ends, and doing so doesn't take up too much of my time. The action thus far (while stretching the limits of plausibility) was still entertaining compared to the drama that makes up a chunk of this part of the series.

I thought that this could've been better, seeing how she wasn't bad in the first series. But the pairing of Jake and Amy- terrible. I'm not a fan of it because I don't think he ever should've existed in this world. I feel like something bad is going to happen in the next series.

The plot to this installment was too convienent and made very boring with Amy obsessed with her boy issues. Perhaps if I was 13 it would be more entertaining, but it made me really dislike her for cheating on the guy she apparently pined after for years.
