Welcome to Starry Hollow, where spells were made to be broken.
Starry Hollow is abuzz when the famously reclusive Creature Hunter, Winston York, emerges from retirement after a rare sighting of an endangered magical creature and Ember Rose is assigned to cover the story. Florian and Aster are thrilled with this development because a new documentary by York would mean an influx of tourists to the magical seaside town. Excitement quickly turns to horror, however, when York dies during filming. What seems like an unfortunate accident starts to look more like murder to intrepid reporter Ember.
Can Ember solve the crime before the killer renders her extinct?

Annabel Chase is the author of urban fantasy and cozy mystery novels. I usually binge Ms. Chased books but this one was hard to get through. It's like Ember went through a personality change. She is usually sarcastic funny but in this book she was just rude. I thought she had great chemistry with Sheriff Nash and was not happy when she took up with Alec because for some reason there is no chemistry between them. She gets a peck on the cheek. Woot! That's exciting! I'll stick it out one more book and chalk it up to having an off book, but if things don't get better I'll have to let this series go.
I really enjoy these books, but with this one, it seems like they’re going downhill.
It’s like the author has forgotten every book in the series that she has previously written. Black HAT Academy? No, Marley attends the Black CLOAK Academy, as from books 8, 9, 10, and 11. What happened to Alec and Ember doing couples therapy and not sleeping together? Now all of a sudden they’re going at it?? And the love triangle between Ember, Alec, and the Sheriff could be done much better. In the beginning of the series, I think it WAS done better.
There are plenty of other examples of inconsistencies throughout this book. Overall, it was very frustrating to read. Hopefully this is rectified in the next book, otherwise I will probably not continue with this series.
Yes! My Ember/Sheriff Nash 'shipping heart could not be happier! I love their flirty banter and working together to solve cases so much and had really missed that in the last few stories. Their chemistry really crackles! An unusual murder and lots of interesting suspects in this one. And I'm so pleased that Ember's powers are developing with the help of her ancestor's grimoire. Step aside, Hyacinth. There's a more powerful Rose in town!
I know Ember Rose has always been a bit flippant, but she seemed more annoyingly so in this book than in previous books. Or maybe I was just in a bad mood when I read it.
I really love this series, but there was so much left unresolved in this book. I won't say it ended on a cliffhanger, but it did end at a very dramatic possible sea change. I don't want to wait until next winter to find out what happens next!
Please, dear Annabel Chase, if you read the reviews. Make her realize that the sheriff is a much better match for her than that moody old vampire? Thank you!
Another excellent book, another unusual mystery and murder investigation!
This murder investigation finds Ember assigned to cover the reemergence of retired Creature Hunter Winston York who comes to Starry Hollow to discover an elusive creature who’s there to lay her egg and then disappear into the ocean.
Things immediately turn dark when York is found murdered and his fame hunters are all in town seeking the same creature.
There’s plenty of storylines here to dive into, from the creature herself and the nature vs exploitation angle, to Ember’s self confidence and the Ivy Rose history/magic aspect of the series that’s getting ever stronger and darker.
Plus the romantic element of Ember’s life is getting more interesting, and coming under a more realistic scrutiny than previously dealt with by Ember.
All done with great dialogue, full on action and lots of magical moments.
Fabulous series and storytelling.
A highly recommended book and series to be read in the order they are written in.

Once again an extraordinarily awesome supernatural cozy mystery
Extraordinary and awesome supernatural Cousy mystery series. A great cast of characters with a spectacular storyline. A young mother living in New Jersey a widow and just barely getting by. When suddenly someone appears in her apartment and whisk her way magically to a different town. She soon realizes these people are her family that she did not know she had. Cousins. She soon find out that she is actually a witch. Her father had Westra way to the human world to keep her away from the strange shenanigans of her aunt. Now back with the family she begins learning how to use her powers in solving mysteries in her new hometown. This is one series out of mini written by this author that exist in this urban fantasy world. Many of them at times will cross over and characters will interchange at times. One of the most entertaining urban fantasy world out there. Great characters great stories and you will follow love with the characters and be entertained from beginning to end. Check them all out you will not be disappointed.
It's sad that while Ember chose Alec, Alec is not ready to put in the work to make the relationship work. He won't go to therapy, he wont open up. They rarely talk, and when they do, they have to avoid certain topics so as not to start arguing.
I agree with Ren. She really doesn't seem happy in the relationship. She must lead the hard lesson that love is noy enough to make a relationship work. He doesn't really take an interest in her life. Even that one time he said he would help with the investigation hr didn't do much. He just occupied all of his time on book, after book.
I really hope she doesn't break up with Alec and go back to Nash. He deserves to be someone's first choice.
We are finally going to see a head to head conflict between Ember and Hyacinthe. Everyone always says to stay on her bad side, curious to see how far she will go. Will she kick her out of her cottage? Will she fire her from her job? I think she can get a job as deputy. She had been the one solving all the murder it seemed, anyway. Can't wait for the showdown. And I wonder if her cousins will have to pick sides.
Ember has finally truly impressed me! Yes, she's more powerful magically, and I always love a heroine who can rescue herself sometimes. What's impressive is her personal growth as an adult, due in part to a life coach raccoon... So classic! Solving the murder mystery is engaging; the motive is quite the surprise and a bit sad. There are several hints that Hyacinth's hold on her family is weakening which is good because her motives have been suspect with regard to Ember and Marley for a while. I'm looking forward to an epic showdown! This is such a fun read, and I especially enjoyed the cheeky allusions to other series.
This book followed Ember as she investigated the death of a famous explorer who died while filming a very rare animal. In this book, ember was very snarky. She made me laugh alot with her witty comebacks. Ember feels it's magic stirring in her but is afraid. She is having nightmares which causes her not to sleep well. Ember and Alex seem to be having problems. I really hope they get resolved soon as I love the pairing. Sheriff and ember spend time together investigating the death. Loved the story and how the underlying story is moving slowly. We get an insight into what drives Aunt Hyacinth. Can't wait for the next book to see what happens.
Another great book - they keep getting better in this series!

Can Ember solve the crime before the killer renders her extinct?
Ms Chase has again made magic come to life in her Starry Hollow series. Her vivid story - weaving, bolstered by creative characters and compelling arc leave me wanting more. I am grateful for her drive and talent, leaving me with a smile after every novel.
Side note, the addition of the "character," Amanda M'Leigh (along with description) just about made me wet m'pants. Pretty sure someone's head exploded in upper - lower Michigan when reading about the Kim K purse. I totally believe the shark leggings and star wars chucks, though.
Ember has access to Ivy's powers, but another murder hits town
Winston York a famous supernatural creature enthusiast is looking for a tepen, but he ends up dead. Ember is assigned to write about him, when she goes to the beach to interview him she finds him dying, thinking the tepen stung him but upon reviewing his video she realizes he didn't. She sets off to help the sheriff solve his murder. Ember also feels a change in herself now that she has Ivy's power, she has to face her shortcomings and learn some truth about her aunt.
This series has taken an unexpected turn that will change the future dynamic and shake things up. I found the diss of another cozy author that also annoys me, hilarious. Chase was quite clever and it wasn't anything terrible but highlighted the same reason this author bothers me as well. The character's name was Amanda M'Leigh and wonder who that could be? Thank you for the hidden gems, Ms. Chase. I like how the book touched on self esteem issues as well. Over confidence can be just as detrimental as lacking confidence.
This baby packs a punch, Ember is hitting her stride in most aspects of her life and she really comes to learns some truth about herself in this book. There is a game a foot and you better be ready to read some more after finishing this book. As always Ms. Chase has crafted another beautiful story, this one really kept me in needles and pins, many new characters and mentions of old ones that keep us looking at other series. Off to the next book, have to see where the revelations on this one, lead.
Fun storyline about a witch and her family. Ember learns of her power later in life. She is single with a young daughter who is also a witch. As a reporter, Ember helps the sheriff with another murder. Her relationship with Alex.seems strained and the sheriff is still interested. The fun was introduced with Alex working on writing the Fury book and a banshee named Amanda M'Leigh with inappropriate leggings and Star War shoes. Always admin read.
This Series Is Incredible! I would give 10 stars if I could!
Ember is one of my favorite characters ever! I have enjoyed her (and Marley) grow throughout each book. I can see a lot of things happening in the next few books especially with Hyacinth, who is my least favorite character in this series. I am still rooting for Ember and Alec but there is a part of my heart that says that Nash is the better man for her. I definitely look forward to the next book!
As my previous reviews proven I'm an Annabel Chase fan. This book continues her ongoing series of a paranormal, descended from the one true witch. In every book someone has to die so that the heroine can solve the case, helped by her friends, relatives and her hungry familiar. This book was a joy to read made even better by the slightly disguised introduction of another author that I like. Full marks yet again Anabell.
Very well written. It kept my interest which means a lot to me. Even though it kept my interest I guessed who did it from the beginning. I just didn't know how. I read a lot of mysteries so I am good at guessing who did it. I loved reading Magic & Monsters and even caught myself laughing out loud. It was humorous which I love and look for in a book. This book had all the qualities I look for in a book. Thank you and look forward to more stories like this. Jill Mishmash
This felt like a new step, a new direction for Ember. She still had a death mystery to solve as her norm, an article to write about, relationship to work, and family drama. However, a new Ember is on the horizon. Her powers, her romantic relationship, and her family (Aunt) issues are about to change. I can feel it. We are going to see a new Ember soon and sticking with her will be worth her NJ attitude.
Otherwise I liked this book a lot more than the previous one. I like that Hyacinth might be a villain, I was waiting for the revelation tbh but I wasn’t sure if she had the guts to turn things that way. I don’t like that she can’t just let Ember and Alec have a healthy romance. I do like that my mom started reading these books a few days ago and said “Marley is you”. 😂

She’s rude and crude, but somehow likable. She’s the one an only Ember Rose. A naturalist dies under mysterious circumstances. Another author makes a surprise appearance as a crazy cat lady. I won’t spoil the surprise for you. And Ember finally spills the beans about Ivy’s magic. The only thing dumber than that is her taste in men. Another winner from Annabel Chase!
Winston York is out of retirement because a tepen has been spotted in Starry Hollow... an awful lot of other rather horrible people seem to want to find the tepen for various nefarious reasons... bur Winston is more the Attenborough of the magical world and just wants to film it... when his body is found dead on the beach Sheriff Nash and Ember are hunting for a killer
Magic & Monsters is book 12 in the awesome Starry Hollow Witches series. I love Ember and her familiar racoon Raoul! So much fun catching up and watching Ember use her powers even more now. LOVE IT! yes racoon Raoul. All the characters are so much fun and they mystery is awesome with mulitple layers. I love seeing Ember embrace her powers. Such an amazing series!
Ember working with the Sheriff to solve another murder. Alec starting a new series that sounds truly awesome, and Aunt Hyacinth showing her true colors as Ember finally embraces who she is meant to be leaves you wanting more now. Another great installment of the Starry Hollow Witches. Bring in the next one.
I new there was something wrong with the aunt, trying to use your own family and I bet you the father new something too. She needs to put Alex in his place cause she's just coming second to books with him. He's not ready and that's saying a lot for a vampire who lives a long life. Her aunt can't kick her out either after all the house belong to her dad and now its hers.

It's nice to see Ember feeling good about herself and not feeling dominated by her aunt.
I would like to see the other characters rounded out more. I'm sure there are many stories in Starry Hollow worth telling. Many dramas , comedies and acts of heroism. We don't see any of that unless Ember is matchmaking.
I enjoyed the message about respect for all living creatures and to be wary of people who are just in it for themselves. This book is layered with that from Ember's aunt, who's true colors are singing through, chasing the tepen and the ever elusive Alex is being exposed for less than worthy of Ember's affections. Looking forward to the next book in this series
