Anger against the West is building amongst Russia’s elite. The Oligarchs are furious: they see sanctions and frozen bank accounts as an affront against them personally.
London-based Ukrainian, Arkady Nemikov, is earning billions from deals denied to fellow Russians – in particular a new gas pipeline contract that will give Europe alternative supply sources other than Russia. Nemikov’s life-long Russian adversary, Viktor Plushenko, is outraged – he had coveted that deal for himself. Taking matters into his own hands, Plushenko decides to commission some private enterprise instead. He hires legendary killer, Oleg Panich, a former Russian agent keen to settle old scores.
Former Royal Marine Commando, Ben Lewis, is still sorting his life out but when MI5 presents a short-term assignment, he agrees to babysit Nemikov and his family who has become a high profile target for the Russians. As attempts are made to kill and kidnap Nemikov’s family in London, Lewis learns that his former enemy, Panich, is behind the attacks. Panich has recruited a small army, quietly supported by Moscow, to make the Nemikov killings appear as acts of terrorism against the West.
Suddenly there is more at stake than just protecting the Nemikov family. Working hand in hand with Saul Zeltinger, a police Detective Inspector, time rapidly closes in as they race to find the kidnapped children and thwart a major terror threat about to be unleashed beneath London.
The Gambit is a high-octane thriller set in both Cambridge and London, with an uncomfortable authenticity that makes this a hurtling page-turner, with twists and turns without ever missing a beat.
A while ago, I was a partner and chief operating officer in a major accounting firm, and latterly held the same role in an international law firm. It took me 36 years and several million air miles to do, arguably, what I should have done several years earlier: give up the day job and focus on a lifelong ambition to write thrillers. Page-turners. Action and adventure stories with twists and turns right to the very last page.
With few parts of the world that I have not seen first-hand, I try to use personal knowledge, connections and a professional interest in technology to craft fast-paced thrillers that are very much set in the real world. Locations that I know personally. Present-day plotlines that try to be as credible and true to life as possible. Fictional backstories to events currently in the public eye. My wife and I live close to the city of Cambridge, England. Together we support several local charities, including the world-renowned Cambridge Union debating society where I am a trustee.

Phew! I am exhausted!! I thought I would try this last night and the book just drew me in. I like this author. How does he know all this stuff about copying fingerprints and such like? Elements of his research are a bit Tom Clancy/ Frederick Forsyth-ish, but not over-bearingly so. Short chapters are great too - they usually encourage me to put a book down and go to sleep, but not this one. Be warned. It is a really good read. It has pace, action, and grips you from the start. Would suit all ages from young adults upwards: come to think of it, even my eighty-nine year old mother would probably like it! It is quite filmic, especially the chase scenes around London.
A fab holiday read! Really pacey, keeps you turning the pages and makes you want to read more from this relatively new author. The Ben Lewis character is very engaging as is Saul Zeltinger - well drawn and believable. I particularly liked the very accurate descriptions of London and the surrounding area, and the well researched technical detail. Most enjoyable - download it now!
A gripping read by Mr R! A fantastic book that continues Ben Lewis career in the Game of Chess, Counter terrorism and East vs West! You thought the Cold war ended? It seems to have just resurfaced with London as the new battle ground! The city will never seem the same once you read this book.
Superhero Ben Lewis is at it again, in the second book in the series. Whilst, he might be too good to be true, I still found the book an enjoyable read, fast paced with lots of twists and turns. Some of the plot you may guess, but it was still a good story and as good as the enjoyable first book. I’ll give it 5 out of 5.
Love the characters and the locations. Exciting plot that kept me turning the pages faster and faster. Well written, absorbing and scarily believable. Looking forward to the next one.
