The Monsterworld Saga #5

God: Monster Slayer 5

Rate this book
My name is Sam Ryder. I was abducted from Earth and brought to a planet called Tor, a world of dying goddesses and monsters. I was leveled up—five times now—turning me from a slightly overweight gamer into a ripped god responsible for protecting three uber-hot goddesses and a retinue of alien women warriors.

At this point in the yarn, we’ve recovered two of the three goddesses’ hearts, but still have one to go. Oh yeah, and we’re about to be attacked by the largest demon horde in the history of the universe. All in a day’s work.

This is the continuation of my story.

Disclaimer: This book has monster slaying, cursing, heavy violence, and a bunch of exotic goddesses and alien women. The novel is not meant for people under the age of 18.

Overall a disappointing ending to the series. The author gave the impression that he was on auto-pilot throughout the entire read, simply regurgitating the existing themes of the book without developing any characters or increasing the depth of Tor's history or character. The entire novel can be summed up in a sentence: "The good guys fight the final boss, they win, nobody of importance was harmed or developed in any way". Honestly, if you weren't super engaged with this series, just take my summary and save yourself some time by skipping on to your next book.

SPOILER STUFF BELOW THIS LINE
The first major problem with this novel was that the author clearly had a list of priority sex/action scenes that he wanted resolved in this book, and so he cut all traveling/downtime from the book. Previously, these were important for deepening the characters and revealing exposition. Instead, this novel simply chains from one action or sex scene to the next, with a few sentences in between that explicitly state that the MC is skipping this part of the story to "save time".

The second major problem was that there was no sense of cost or loss to the entire story, its the traditional childish "the good guys won" ending. The only 'major' characters that suffer any kind of lasting harm are Bell (not relevant for 3 novels), the Dragon (a taxi mechanic with only a single page of dialog), and Bu'Plug (literally 15 or less lines of dialog over 3 novels). In particular, Bell's end is sinful because the reader is supposedly supposed to care deeply for her fate to become a sireen even though no reason or explanation is ever given for her choice, nor even are the full ramifications of the choice explained.

Finally, the history/lore of Tor is sorely neglected in this novel. We are given some glimpses of exposition/history of Tor and the Morgoss throughout the first 3 novels, but never again is the subject touched or explained in further detail. Neglecting a full and thorough explanation of how/when/why the evils began makes the world feel paper thin and deeply detracts from any sense of accomplishment that the reader is supposed to feel at the end of the story. It really was just a "evil beings popped up, and did evil stuff because they are evil" story. Very disappointing...

Overall this author is promising, and I will read more of his work. I just hope he continues to improve his stories over time and takes constructive criticism from his completed works into account.

Like a 2.5 starts. went very much downhill since book 3, not sure what specifically was the problem but I fell that the story was just no longer interesting.

A great conclusion

Wow! It was interesting reading this series. A great conclusion in my opinion. I have to say, it began rough at first. The Three and Eve were awful initially, but starting with the 3rd book, they’re much better in terms of their character. Sam was also full of a lot of self-doubt which lessons as the story progresses, but it’s still seen throughout the series. I understand that it’s to humanize him, but I wish he had more confidence in himself. It seems by the end of the book, he’s much more self-assured though.

The other characters are interesting. Beat’s funny. Her and Sam’s banter’s always hilarious. His best friend he needed. Vrill and Eve burying the hatchet was pretty well done. It was nice to see Belle again in a bigger role, but her transformation at the end is a little disappointing. It’s a shame Sam never reverted his mutation but to be fair, he’s a god by the final book. Lace was a trip. Maybe in later books we’ll see her softer side. Silk and Chastity were nice editions.

The sex scenes were pretty good. They’re long yet sensual. They’re also well paced. The fight scenes are also pretty cool too. Sam’s progression as a warrior’s pretty good. He tends to get hurt a lot. It’s amazing what he and his teammates have to go through. His lost his ears twice. Even with that, they still come out on top. The final victory was a little brief, but I wasn’t upset. I was ready to end it.

If you like sci-fi, fantasy, and action-adventure, you’ll enjoy this. It does take some time to get into though.

This was an entertaining finish to the series. This book sticks with the newly established pattern of the previous volume: longer chapters, longer sex scenes, and Ryder's new power after being leveled up to being a God seems somewhat non-existent, although this is addressed in the final battle. Something strange in the last two books - the sex scenes jump around from using somewhat cleaner terminology (such as, "her sex"), to using sexually explicit terms - almost as if the scenes were written by two different people.

A New Tor

Great ending with lots of fighting, loving and more monsters plus more allies! I have enjoyed this entire series and if more books follow, I will read them, too.
