Corruption in the O.R.

Rate this book
Unethical, greedy, and illicit – welcome to the operating room at Masonville General Hospital.

Anesthesiologist Viktoria Thorsdottir is no ordinary physician and she’s accustomed to working temporary assignments. In her travels, however, she’s never been greeted by such a stark, icy-cold reception from O.R. personnel like the one she encounters at Masonville General.

˃˃˃ Viktoria is an expert at making her patients comfortable, so why do they continue to feel pain?

Dr. Thorsdottir discovers that there are forces at work in this Northern Pennsylvania hospital that she doesn’t understand; forces that the doctors in charge pretend don’t exist. In the face of growing animosity towards her, she begins to stealthily monitor the nurse anesthetists she supervises, and must become as diabolical as they are to discover the disturbing truth of the community’s anesthesia services. As Viktoria’s situation becomes more complex, it is apparent that there is more than one sinister secret hidden in the department!

Barbara Ebel is an award-winning and USA Today Bestselling Author who sprinkles credible medicine into the background of her medical suspense novels. Since she is a physician and specialized in Anesthesiology, her operating room scenes shine. However, her vivid characters and plots take center stage.

She has penned three medical suspense series, and two separate medical novels. Definitely check out the New Book Release at the bottom.....

“Doctor Barbara’s” Dr. Annabel Tilson series includes six books (which can each stand alone), and is based on a female medical sleuth who promises exciting times on the wards as well as in her personal life. Two books in the series have won awards: Death Grip, the 4th book, won the 2018 NIEA award (National Indie Excellence Award), and Deadly Delusions won the 2017 Kindle Book Awards Semi-Finalist for thrillers.

Her first series, the Dr. Danny Tilson novels, takes place in Tennessee and is based on a neurosurgeon who has his hands full in the O.R. as well as in his personal life due to a female villainess, a favorite character of readers (who have a love-hate relationship with her). Dr. Danny’s third book, Collateral Circulation, was the 2015 National Indie Excellence Awards Finalist for Medical Thrillers. Operation Neurosurgeon, the first book in the series, was the top finalist for best-selling medical mystery books in 2012. (Best Selling Books' blog announced on PR Buzz Press Release Wire, Chicago, IL).

Dr. Ebel lives in a natural wildlife corridor in Tennessee with her husband and dogs. She maintains an active, non-clinical role in medicine, and loves to hear from readers.

NEW BOOK RELEASE April 2024:

"BLUE, the Deaf Agility Dog," is a heartwarming story about BLUE, who is a deaf, rescued dog owned and trained by the author.

I really enjoyed the medical aspect of this book, especially the insight into the OR from the anesthesiologist’s point of view. The plot of the book was predictable from the first missing vial. Also predictable was the parallel scam with double-dipping on the medical claims. I am not sure why the side-story with the dog — it just made the whole reading experience worse for me with the dogs fate at the end of the story. One more thing that made it less of an enjoyable reading experience (other than a predictable and bland plot/storyline) was the poor editing. Toward the end, the author was writing about the three workers at the hotel (I think?) but the text referred to one of them as “the CRNA” in error. The five or six instances of extraneous quotes around any figure of speech were unnecessary and irritating.

Terrible book. One star because I figured out the "bad guys" very early in reading. Also because, while the protagonist's standard of care for her patients is admirable, her personal life choices leave a lot to be desired. But the worst thing - spoiler alert - is that the ending is a real downer! Not only did it leave me depressed for hours, it had nothing to do with the plot development! Nothing. A big downer that left me feeling bad and added nothing to the plot.
I will not be reading any more of this author's work.

Too real. Having worked in the OR for nearly 40 years, I can see that happening. The characters are a little shallow, can't imagine some of the actions. Don't want to give anything away, the book was a great read.

I am a retired trauma nurse. If I find something medical, I am likely to at least give it a glance. I'm sorry I wasted my time on this nonsense.
It's poorly written, the dialogue is clunky and artificial, there are so many names that all start with the same initial, that I gave up trying to flit between Jessy, Jay, Jeff and Joe. There's a word for that sort of linguistic trickery, but I'm stuck on grabbing it out for definition. It will come to me, and I can edit this review if I think of it. It doesn't matter, this is an awful book.
It's poorly constructed, it's scattered, the action is dull and the characters are just not fleshed out. They act like robots, without emotion or subtext. Boring.
On a very personal note, I was shattered that the best character, a lovely Border Collie named Buddy, died from ingesting rat poison by accident.
When I was 16, my sweet little cocker-mutt mix, also named Buddy, ingested roach poison, when my mom put these little tablets behind furniture to kill South Florida roaches. No one knew little Buddy found some tablets and ate them, but he did and the outcome was the same. The coincidence was awful. I'm now in my 70's; but I remember that little guy, so sweet and so doomed by a silly mistake. So for me, reading that horrible ending, I have to mark this book as just awful.
I don't recommend it.
I'm not reading any more of this author's clumsy work, Buddy was just a sorry coincidence. But this writer is truly awful. Her story didn't make sense, her arc is missing all the points of good fictional reaction, and the passage of events and time are just ridiculous. What happens in a month in this version would take several years, IRL.

Not great

Hmmm, it felt like the author had her own misconceptions and biases which seemed into seep the writing. The husband being a drug addict because he smokes marijuana seemed really dated and unrealistic. Also the author was degrading toward nurse anesthetists. The entire scenario of the book was not a shocker. I rate it three because it wasn't terrible but it wasn't great. Kinda like a low budget lifetime movie. Would give 2.5 stars if I could.

Great story

Three stars. In spite of the great story , this review is low due to poor editing . Too many spelling , grammar and punctuation mistakes .
Dr. Viktoria, an anesthesiologist working for a temp agency , goes to a Pennsylvania hospital and finds gross problems in the anesthesia department .

Good plot and characters, but too many awkward phrases

I loved the main characters and the plot, but the author's phrasing and word choices are very awkward. The book needs a good editor to reword many of the transitions and clean up the text flow. With a little work, this could be an excellent book!

Truly awful writing...

The stilted writing style makes me wonder if English is the author's second language. Made it about 20 pages before giving up, but I wanted to add this review to counter all the inexplicable 5 stars.

A gentle, smooth-flowing mystery

Nice people, except the bad players, we're all working with Viktoria. Then Viktoria found out who was who. That was bad for them and good for the patients.

Storyline was good. One beautiful relationship was ended in an unexpected and grotesque manner. This was totally unnecessary. I don't plan to read more from this author.

Awesome medical thriller!

Dr. Thorsdottir is an anesthesiologist working in temporary, traveling positions. Some of her coworkers don't seem to be thrilled about having a new doctor around even if it is only for a month. Dr. Thorsdottir didn't mind too much since she's in it for the patients and not the socialization. She does begin to worry when some of her patients have more pain than they should post-op. She needs to figure out what's going on and why. I totally enjoyed reading this book. Corruption in the O.R. is well written and kept me up reading.

P.S. I've read some awful reviews of this book labeling it as propaganda or horrible writing. I found none of this to be true. I don't understand people who raise a stink about fiction. There's lots of medical thrillers out there about all kinds of situations. I enjoy most of them and definitely this one.

Enjoyable Read

This is the first book I have read by this author, and look forward to reading more of her work. Her characters, for the most part, are well-developed, and her plot flowed well. My only issue is that, in my opinion, she may want to rethink her use of unfamiliar medical terms and replace them with terms we lowly readers would understand. I didn't find this as much of a thriller as an interesting medical mystery. It was an enjoyable book, nonetheless. Good work, Barbara!

A simplistic story written in simplistic language with a thin plot and a couple of irrelevant subplots. The dialogue is quite stilted as if the speaker were making a formal speech instead of just normal conversation. Interesting enough and easy to read.

Great book

I loved this book! However after losing a pet recently I wish the dog had lived! Or at least she would of rethought her decision to go back to her husband!

Good Read

I enjoyed reading this book but was thrown off a bit by its description about the book. I don’t think the person who wrote the description read the book.
