Rate this book
Fall Down Angel is a contemporary novel by Rick Steber that is based on the true-life adventures of two runaways who work their way west hopping freight trains. The young man makes a series of bad decisions, turns to petty crime, is arrested and spends ten years in Folsom Prison. The young lady seizes on a business opportunity to become the madam of a legal brothel in Nevada. The genius of the story is in the strange twist of events when the two main characters meet again decades later and discover they share a common past. Rick Steber has more than 40 titles under his belt and sales of nearly two million books. Rick has won the prestigious Western Writers of America Spur Award and numerous other awards. He is a keen observer of the changing American West and he articulates these changes in prose that are boldly descriptive, invigorating and creative. His writing has been compared to Hemingway, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck, McMurtry and Stegner. Three of his books have been optioned to movie production companies. In addition to his writing, Rick is an engaging Western personality and has the unique ability to make his characters come alive as he tells a story. He has spoken at many national and international conferences and visits schools where he talks to students about the importance of education, developing reading and writing skills, and impressing upon them the value of saving our history for future generations. This is the first Rick Steber I have read. Excellent descriptions of the high prairie and the great plains. The land, the people, the abject poverty during the Dust Bowl and the depression make it hard to read at time, because times were so tough and these two never seemed to catch a break. Just when it started looking up for either one, another crisis fell. Based on a true story, it felt gritty and real.
