I am originally from a small town in northeast Indiana. Typical introvert kid; closer to books than people — grew up with a fascination for horror novels (Stephen King, Dean Koontz) and medieval fantasy (Piers Anthony, R.A Salvatore).
In April of 1996, I moved out on my own to Phoenix, Arizona to find my own path.
On a personal level, I have been married to my wonderful wife, Erika since October 10th, 2012. I have two stepchildren, Jenna and Johnny, and a two-year-old baby girl, Jessiena.
I have completed my first novel, Consequences Within Chaos and will be extending the story in my upcoming sequel, The Bleeding Crown. Also on Amazon & Kindle, I have In Four Days: Horror Suspense Novella.

Evade Part One by Derek Barton 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 This is a super exciting short story, with part 2 and 3 as separate books. There are very mysterious and supernatural elements going on in this story. Detective Korrey comes across a boy who has been missing for 3 years. Something very strange and creepy begins to happen once the boy appears. There are different events happening in the story and they all begin to tie together! There’s lots of twists and turns and I can’t wait to move on to part 2! This is a fast read with so much suspense and action!
Thank you to Derek Barton for the audio version of this exciting book! The narrator is excellent!!
I can’t wait to start on Elude Part two and Elude Part three! Great start to the series!!
A cereal killer, police detective, some street gangs and one very mysterious child that had been missing for three years. As their stories collide Their lives intertwine and the story goes from mundane to extraordinary. The child seems to be at the center of it all, but everything about him is a mystery. Why are the gangs seeking him, what does the cereal killer have to do with any of it and will the detective be able to survive getting to the bottom of this case? This is a fast paced and exciting introduction to this novella series! I look forward to finding out what happens next! 4 stars for Evade
Wow!This was too short, though it does say part 1.The man known as the Nurse Catcher is finally caught. Lindsey is about to face the man when her car won't start. She gets a ride with police that is a most harrowing ride, with a child like no other. Ashley Ulrey was a fine narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Well-developed characters and plot. I will definitely be reading more of this series as it progresses along. It reminding me of my own writing style. High action, believable scenes and people, very engaging! Magical realism at its best!

What Did I Just Walk Into? Picture The X-Files slamming espresso shots while binge-watching Se7en and deciding sleep is optional. Detective Lindsey Korrey closes one nightmare case and immediately gets tossed into a supernatural police chase with a missing child that Hell would very much like returned to sender. You don’t ease into this story. You are shoved into traffic.
Here’s What Slapped (Print + Audio): I read the print copy. I listened to the audiobook. Both hit. On the page, Mr. Derek Barton’s pacing is ruthless. Tight chapters. No wasted movement. Procedural grit fused with supernatural chaos in a way that feels grounded instead of gimmicky.
In audio? Ashley Ulery understood the assignment. Her delivery carries Lindsey’s exhaustion, grit, and edge without overacting it. The tension stays high. The Seekers feel wrong in that subtle, crawling-under-your-skin way. The chase sequences? You can feel the tires screeching.
Lindsey Korrey is not your fragile horror heroine. She’s competent. Determined. Running on fumes and instinct. The dynamic between her and Rory adds emotional weight so it’s not just monsters and mayhem.
And the Seekers? Hard pass. Absolutely not. No thank you.
For a short listen, it delivers more adrenaline than some 12-hour audiobooks that meander into oblivion.
What Could’ve Been Better: The only real complaint? It ends. Two hours feels criminal when you’re that invested. You will immediately want the next installment. This is not a casual “I’ll get to it later” series. This is a “fine, take my money” situation.
Perfect for Readers Who Love: • Supernatural thrillers with procedural backbone • High-stakes chases that do not slow down • Detectives who feel human under pressure • Horror that blends grit with cosmic-level dread • Fast listens that punch above their weight
Sum It Up On paper, it’s sharp and relentless. In audio, it’s immersive and tense. Either way, Evade grabs you by the collar and does not let go. Sleep schedule? Optional. Sequel? Required.
