I am originally from a small town in northeast Indiana. Typical introvert kid; closer to books than people — grew up with a fascination for horror novels (Stephen King, Dean Koontz) and medieval fantasy (Piers Anthony, R.A Salvatore).

In April of 1996, I moved out on my own to Phoenix, Arizona to find my own path.

On a personal level, I have been married to my wonderful wife, Erika since October 10th, 2012. I have two stepchildren, Jenna and Johnny, and a two-year-old baby girl, Jessiena.

I have completed my first novel, Consequences Within Chaos and will be extending the story in my upcoming sequel, The Bleeding Crown. Also on Amazon & Kindle, I have In Four Days: Horror Suspense Novella.

‘Evade, Part One’ by Derek Barton is the sequel to his 2017 novella ‘In Four Days’. This installment is filled with action, suspense and twist and turns enough to give one literary whiplash. With an array of some very memorable characters and a most creative plot, this short read will have you entertained and asking for more. Good things do indeed come in small packages. Derek breathes life into his characters and takes his readers along for a rapidly palpitating escapade in a cat-and-mouse adventure with the supernatural. A fun and entertaining read. Looking forward to the next installment.

What Did I Just Walk Into?
Imagine The X-Files took a shot of espresso and crashed headfirst into Seven. Then toss in a detective who can’t catch a break, a missing child who may or may not be entirely human, and a supernatural chase that never hits the brakes. That’s EVADE.

Here’s What Slapped:
Lindsey Korrey is the definition of grit under pressure. One minute she’s closing the book on a serial killer case, the next she’s in a runaway police car with a child that Hell itself seems desperate to reclaim. The pacing is pure adrenaline. Derek Barton doesn’t give you time to breathe before the next twist sucker-punches you. The Seekers are creepy as hell. The tension is palpable. The writing is sharp, cinematic, and emotionally charged. Barton’s knack for blending procedural realism with eerie supernatural elements keeps the story grounded while still crawling under your skin.

It’s rare for a novella series to hit this hard, but EVADE proves that horror doesn’t need 500 pages to ruin your sleep schedule. The atmosphere is relentless, the mystery tight, and the ending leaves you muttering “what just happened” in the best possible way.

What Could’ve Been Better:
Only that it ended. You’ll finish this one wanting to sprint straight into Elude and Escape.

Perfect for Readers Who Love:
Supernatural thrillers with police procedural grit
Fast-paced, high-stakes horror that doesn’t let up
Characters who feel human even when facing the inhuman
Stories that blend tension, mystery, and full-throttle fear

This is a super exciting short story, with part 2 and 3 as separate books.
There are very mysterious and supernatural elements going on in this story.
Detective Korrey comes across a boy who has been missing for 3 years. Something very strange and creepy begins to happen once the boy appears. There are different events happening in the story and they all begin to tie together!
There’s lots of twists and turns and I can’t wait to move on to part 2!
This is a fast read with so much suspense and action!

Thank you to Derek Barton for the audio version of this exciting book! The narrator is excellent!!

I can’t wait to start on Elude Part two and Elude Part three! Great start to the series!!

A cereal killer, police detective, some street gangs and one very mysterious child that had been missing for three years. As their stories collide Their lives intertwine and the story goes from mundane to extraordinary. The child seems to be at the center of it all, but everything about him is a mystery. Why are the gangs seeking him, what does the cereal killer have to do with any of it and will the detective be able to survive getting to the bottom of this case?
This is a fast paced and exciting introduction to this novella series! I look forward to finding out what happens next!

Wow!This was too short, though it does say part 1.The man known as the Nurse Catcher is finally caught. Lindsey is about to face the man when her car won't start. She gets a ride with police that is a most harrowing ride, with a child like no other. Ashley Ulrey was a fine narrator.I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Well-developed characters and plot. I will definitely be reading more of this series as it progresses along. It reminding me of my own writing style. High action, believable scenes and people, very engaging! Magical realism at its best!
