I have mixed feelings about this one.
A crime noir set in Barcelona in 1943, this is about Eulalia that leads a double life. The artwork is fine, but somehow the story is a bit rush and some scenes have no explanation.

Lo primero que me llamó la atención cuando oí hablar por primera vez de este cómic fue el título. Mi idea de una lamia es una vampira, y la sinopsis no indicaba que fueran por allí los tiros.
Después de investigar un poco (leer la wikipedia, vaya) y de terminar el libro, he entendido por qué se llama así.
Una historia impactante, sobrecogedora e inesperada. Lo que aparenta que va a ser la anodina historia de una mujer de clase media, embarazada y consultora de ese trasunto del consultorio de la señora Francis, que es el programa de la doctora Elena Bosch, pasa a ser una historia compleja, oscura y muy dura, con unos giros de guión tremendos... y muy bien llevados, que es la principal fortaleza de esta historia, a mi juicio. Cómo un planteamiento que llega a ser tan enrevesado, encaja como la maquinaria de un reloj, dando sentido a todos los personajes, a todos los acontecimientos.
Respecto al dibujo, acompaña muy bien la historia el trazo grueso, casi geométrico (también para las personas) en blanco y negro, sin detalles innecesarios, pero sin resultar simple.

The day was dark and stormy. Internet was down/work on hold. What’s one to do but read this graphic novel sent to me from Elliott Bay Books graphic novel subscription?
My English edition is called Ghost Written. It’s set in Barcelona in 1943. Murder and mayhem. Interesting epilogue: the story was inspired by a very popular radio show that ran from 1947-1982. Every afternoon Spaniards would stop what they were doing to listen to this advice program.
This is a big, gorgeous book. Black and white drawings with splashes of blood. I mean red.
Original and entertaining. Perfect for an October day.

Este cómic me ha resultado muy entretenido, y las ilustraciones me han gustado, y son en blanco y negro.
La trama está ambientada en Barcelona en 1943, Mauricio “Herr Doktor” es un detective con métodos poco convencionales para resolver los casos que investiga, pero debe aparcar sus casos porque va a colaborar con la policía para poder dar caza a un sanguinario asesino.
Por otro lado, Eulalia es una de las clientas de Mauricio, éste está investigando el paradero de su marido Alfonso, que desapareció hace 3 semanas. Laia trabaja para un programa radiofónico de éxito, 'El consultorio de Elena Bosch'.
Pero además Laia guarda un secreto....

Un cómic excepcional.
Con una historia y guión muy cuidados, que funcionan como un mecanismo de relojería hasta el "killing spree" de la parte final.
El dibujo es muy personal, y a mí me ha encantado; Es muy cercano al cómic de principios de siglo XX, y a artistas como Clement Moreau, y, aún teniendo toques modernistas en personajes y escenarios (no en vano transcurre en Barcelona), roza el expresionismo con su sobrio blanco y negro y un uso muy cuidado del contraste luz/sombra.
Con razón está en todas las listas de "lo mejor de 2017".

Muy buena historia que, usando como base el thriller, pinta un cuadro de situación de la España posguerra y las visiones conservadoras que se tenían en la sociedad. El guion se estructura en base a presentar situaciones extrañas para luego explicarlas de a poco, generando así nuevas preguntas hasta que llega la explicación definitiva. Esa forma de narrar desautomatiza al lector e invierte las expectativas de lo que está leyendo.
Los personajes son muy buenos y originales, puesto que cada uno de ellos tiene cierta particularidad que lo destaca; esa cualidad es marcada con un par de pinceladas nomás, por lo que el cómic no pierde tiempo en presentarlos y contarnos su vida.
El dibujo de Rayco sobresale también en el uso del blanco y negro y las figuras con estilo de tira cómica, pero sin exagerar, sin convertirlas en parodias.
Recomendado para aquel que quiera leer algo europeo atrapante, original, y con un toque de perversión..

I didn't epxect the twists and turns, and the black and white with splashes of red really suits the story.
also reading the background info on a similar radio show in spain, which was the source of inspiration, really helped a lot in understanding more of the events. we follow a woman who works in the radio in one of the shows that receives letters from women asking for advice, and the advice they get are always: "be a good wife. it's probably your fault. be obedient."
our mc is a seemingly pregnant nice lady and one of the women who answer the letters, who also is looking for her missing husband. but she's hiding something, and we start uncovering the truth and the twists keep on coming.

I really enjoyed the black and white illustrations for this graphic novel. It aided the noir feel of the time period setting for the novel. This short and sweet graphic novel packs quite a punch and several plot twists that I plain didn’t see coming.
It might just be me but the ending felt a little off – mainly Pablo’s and the bandaged man. The detective arc at some shanties also confused me – I’m assuming the context but I’m not entirely sure if I’m correct in them.
This novel took me just under an hour to finish and it was an enjoyable read even though some things felt beyond my grasp as far as relevance to the plot. Overall, if you’re looking for a short & sweet, albeit bloody, little graphic novel – then I recommend checking this one out. Fun in a wicked way, a very noir 40s tale about an advice column staffed by ghost writers in the midst of a murdering spree. The idea of a pregnant belly as a disguise is clever and the art and stylizing of the whole thing gives it a retro feel, alongside some interesting twists!

Me ha gustado mucho. La forma de presentar las diferentes lineas de la historia es muy chula, la historia en sí me encanta y el dibujo me h gustado mucho también.
Sencilla y con un tono interesante, para un buen rato leyendo.

Novela gráfica en blanco y negro con una cuidada estética. Por un lado tenemos a Laia, quien esconde secretos; a u detective privado que con su peculiar método de hipnotismo buscará a un asesino en serie y una Barcelona de post-guerra llena de miserias

Franco dönemi Barselona'sında geçen gizemli bir seri katil hikayesi. 1947-1982 yılları arasında yayınlanan çok popüler bir radyo programından ilham alınarak yazılmış. İspanyollar her öğleden sonra bu tavsiye programını dinlemek için yaptıkları işi bırakırlarmış. Hikaye bu radyo programından bir kesitle başlıyor ve ilerleyen sayfalarda ana karakter Lamia ile tanışıyoruz. Lamia çift kişilikli bir karakter ve kayıp kocasını arıyor. Anlaştığı dedektif kocasını ararken bir yandan da şehirdeki seri cinayetleri araştırmakadır. Kırmızı siyah renkleriyle anlatılan hikayede bol bol kan görüyoruz. Belki çeviriden belki de hikayenin anlatımından bilmiyorum ama bir yerleri eksik kalmış gibi hissettim. Yine de hikayeyi ve çizimlerini sevdim.

I’ve been thinking about the popularized concept of “female rage” for a while now. How it’s only acceptable for skinny (and mostly white) women to be pretty depictions of it with their mascara flowing down. There needs to be an aspect of helplessness. The female rage character will be rescued - by fate, by an act of God, by her JOB. I’ve also been thinking about that tumblr post going viral that says “men pay women to look and act like that to convince you to do it for free” and in congruence with that, the tweet where a self-professed leftist man is gleeful at the idea that a young women has to sexually exploit herself to her landlord to keep her housing. There is this constant disdain and mockery for women’s concerns and rages. Because it’s not seen as a tangible experience.
When are women allowed to get angry? When are women allowed to react to the things happening around them? These are some of the questions explored in Rayco Pulido’s (translated by Andrea Rosenberg) Ghostwriter. The story is set in Francoist Spain and our protagonist works for the propaganda department headed by the Church.
An image that particularly struck me was of the battered woman deriding Laia for being concerned because at least she isn’t husband-less. The questioning of the concept of motherhood within the structure of marriage and how violence is necessary to escape that cage of heteropatriarchal nuclear family is contrasted with the disdain for any other lifestyle.
The female rage in this book takes the form of a serial killer. The violence of the serial killings is set against the background of Francoist state killings and the Red Scare. Yet, it is the serial killings that is given the most attention and shock. There is general sense of placation towards everything else.
The column that Laia is required to write is inundated with wives and girlfriends facing domestic abuse and threats of violence and she is not allowed to give advise that stray from the dictates set by the church that encourage submission and cooperation on the part of the women - even if she pays for it with her own life.
The Francoist society places a lot of value on family rearing but doesn’t seem to put any consequences on men who abandon their families or introduce violence into them. In typical patriarchal fashion, it is the woman who faces the blame and the consequences of not having a husband.
In the end book leaves you very angry and very confused about the institution of marriage itself.

La historia está ambientada en la Barcelona de la época franquista, y es muy buena. Prefiero no decir nada para no arruinarle la experiencia a nadie.

Hay un par de volúmenes que andan por mi familia desde hace casi un siglo; son dos tomos en los que están encuadernados todos los ejemplares de la revista Nuevo Mundo del año 1925. Entre anuncios de productos infalibles contra la obesidad, la vejez o la impotencia y artículos y relatos de todo tipo, encontramos una sección de humor a página completa que se denomina Garabatos Kaitescos y viene firmada por K-Hito (1890-1984), un señor que hizo muchas cosas y que en esta página caricaturiza los usos y costumbres de su época con diversas técnicas, recordando alguna página enormemente a Los Grandes Inventos de TBO. Esta larga introducción sólo es para reflejar que los dibujos lineales, caricaturescos, de Rayco Pulido me recuerdan enormemente a esos garabatos de K-Hito y simplemente verlos me lleva a épocas pretéritas que no he vivido. En Lamia, Rayco nos cuenta una historia de asesinos en serie en la Barcelona de los años 40, ofreciéndonos el panorama desolador de la época, sobre todo en cuanto al machismo, la represión policial
y la injerencia de la Iglesia Católica en todos los aspectos de la sociedad. Un cómic muy visual, con un guión que engancha y con un par de personajes que son todo un acierto. Se lee de una sentada y es muy recomendable. De Rayco había leído Nela, adaptación al cómic de la novela Marianela de Pérez Galdós y me había gustado, porque siempre puede sorprender con algún hallazgo visual entre viñetas a veces minimalistas, pero me quedo sin duda con esta Lamia que nos hace reflexionar sobre épocas pasadas muy malas que algunos imbéciles quieren revivir y además entretiene con su trama. Premio Nacional del Cómic 2017.
