Spirited Away, directed by the veteran anime film-maker Hayao Miyazaki, is Japan's most successful film, and one of the top-grossing 'foreign language' films ever released. Set in modern Japan, the film is a wildly imaginative fantasy, at once personal and universal. It tells the story of a listless little girl, Chihiro, who stumbles into a magical world where gods relax in a palatial bathhouse, where there are giant babies and hard-working soot sprites, and where a train
runs across the sea.

Andrew Osmond's insightful study describes how Miyazaki directed Spirited Away with a degree of creative control undreamt of in most popular cinema, using the film's delightful, freewheeling visual ideas to explore issues ranging from personal agency and responsibility to what Miyazaki sees as the lamentable state of modern Japan. Osmond unpacks the film's visual language, which many Western (and some Japanese) audiences find both beautiful and bewildering. He traces connections between Spirited Away and Miyazaki's prior body of work, arguing that Spirited Away uses the cartoon medium to create a compellingly immersive drawn world.
This edition includes a new foreword by the author in which he considers the world of animated cinema post-Spirited Away, considering its influence on films ranging from del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth to Pixar's Inside Out.

If you love the film, don't read this book. If you've never seen the film, don't read this book. If you hate the film, why would you read this book? In fact, whoever you are and no matter what you might hope for from this book, don't read it. There might have been less painful and more acute analyses in the first half - I started it months ago and put it aside because I was either bored or aflame with irritation (thank goodness I didn't buy it) - but if there were they've been erased from memory. If the author is an expert in the field of animation one wouldn't know it from this book. Don't read it.

ETA: It's not a 'fried dumpling'.

Her filmine ayrı bayıldığım Hayao Miyazaki'nin en ünlü yapımlarından biri olan Ruhların Kaçışı'na dair bir kitap bulmuşsam asla affetmem.. Şu kitabı gördüğümdeki şaşkınlığımı görseydiniz bir de! Ruhların Kaçışı'nı Asya sinemasına vurgun olduğum zaman diliminde birkaç sene önce izlemiştim. Filme dair bazı şeyleri çok net hatırlasam da bazı kısımlarına anlam veremediğimi anımsıyorum. Rüzgar Yükseliyor, Gökteki Kale, Prenses Mononoke, Yürüyen Şato hala favori Japon animasyonlarımdan. Fakat birkaç tanesini bir kereden fazla izlemediğime pişmandım ve tam da bugünlerde Ruhların Kaçışı'nı tekrar izlemeye niyetlenmişken kitabı görmüş olmama çok sevindim. Kitap Miyazaki'nin filmlerinin ve ünlü Ghibli Stüdyo'sunun diğer yapımlarına dair birçok bilgi içeriyor. Ruhların Kaçışı'nın Japon seyircisinin bakış açısı altından deneyimlememizi sağlıyor. Açıkçası ben Miyazaki'nin filmlerinin Amerika ve Avrupa ülkelerinde de bu kadar ünlü olduğunu hatta hepimizin adını bildiği ünlü animasyon filmleriyle bu kadar başa baş vizyonda yarıştığını hiç bilmiyordum. Ve dahi Miyazaki'nin hepimizin yine adını bildiği yabancı animasyon filmlerinde karakter tasarladığına dair de bir fikrim yoktu. Kitabı okurken gerçekten tek kelimeyle bayıldım. Japon animasyon dünyasına dair hiç bilmediğim kapılar açtı ufkumda. Kitaptan çıkardığım bir sürü öneri Japon animasyonu oldu. Miyazaki'nin yaşamına dair harika ipuçlarıyla doluydu. Çok severek okudum, keşke her filminin bu kadar detaylı incelemesi olsa. Ayrıca kitabın Ruhların Kaçışı'na dair sahne sahne incelemesi çok kaliteliydi. Filme dair kafamdaki soru işaretlerini gidermemi sağladı. Kendi kütüphanemde de olmasını çok istediğim bir kitap oldu. Bol keyifli okumalar dilerim, umarım en az benim kadar beğenirsiniz.

Eh bien ce fut... fastidieux !
Grande fan des films du studio Ghibli et très friande des analyses cinématographique qui explorent leurs thèmes, je me suis jetée sur celui-ci les yeux fermés, pour un résultat plus que mitigé.

Osmond se contente plus ou moins de raconter le film de manière linéaire en s'accordant quelques digressions sur les grands thèmes du film, qui s'avèrent être soit très attendues soit discutables. La construction du livre n'est d'ailleurs pas très claire, la partie sur la genèse du film et les influences de Miyazaki arrive un peu comme un cheveu sur la soupe après un démarrage qui commence déjà l'analyse du film.

Le style est tour à tour pompeux / pénible (mal traduit ?) et familier ("gamine" revient plusieurs fois).

Et l'objet livre laisse vraiment à désirer. Les images sont souvent pixellisées, les marges ne sont pas respectées, la typo choisie ne comprend pas la lettre "ō" et change donc en plein milieu des mots. Bref, une impression générale de bâclé.

Je mets deux étoiles parce que ça se lit vite et j'ai appris quelques petites choses, mais si vous voulez lire une bonne analyse des films de Ghibli, je vous conseille plutôt "Quatre films de Hayao Miyazaki" de Hervé Joubert-Laurencin

Not too long, not too deep.

It doesn't develop too much in academic thoughts and other references, and mostly references Miyazaki himself, undoubting him and his assertions. Nice but definitely not widely researched. Definitely ignores some major threads in the academic discussion of the film, and dismisses explicitly and without arguments some themes that have been proved to underlie in the book.

All in all, not wasted time but definitely not necessary.

Hayao Miyazaki beni çok derinden etkileyen bir adam. Her filminde öyle bir sihir var ki tekrar tekrar izliyorum. Bu kitapta Ruhların Kaçışının yapım süreci ,nelerden etkilenildiği, Japonya ve Batıdaki etkisi üzerinde durulmuş ve Alfa kitap harika bir basım ortaya koymuş.

This book has some great shots of the film and the parts about Miyazaki’s history are quite interesting. I didn’t mind the chapters that summarized the film as I hadn’t seen it in some time, but I felt like this book didn’t offer a ton of analysis. Would have liked to have learned more about the cultural influence this film had and specifically, how it affected Ghibli and Miyazaki. Still a fun read and the illustrations are incredible. 7/10

Very surface level, the majority of this book just describes the film shot by shot, or points out incredibly obvious references. It does go into the production of the film, but again, most of it barely touched upon the animation itself.

Pek sevdiğim Miyazaki'nin en çok bilinen filmi olsa da Spirited Away benim favorim olmaya yakın dahi değil. Bu kitabı biraz da neler kaçırıyorum acaba düşüncesi ile okudum, Princess Mononoke'ye ve My Neighbor Totoro'ya kıyasla beni çok etkileyememiş bir filmdi, dağınıktı, mesajlarını kaybetmiştim yolda. Filmin detayları, nerede nasıl geçişler olduğu, yapım sürecinin filmin son halini nasıl etkilediği, karakter gelişiminde nasıl etkiler olduğu, kültürel ne gibi atıflar olduğu gibi pek çok değerli detayın olduğu güzel bir inceleme, bu nedenle keyifli bir okuma sağlıyor ve merak unsurunu kaybetmiyor. Yine de süper ufuk açıcı olduğunu düşünmüyorum. Miyazaki meraklılarına önerilir.

studio ghibli and especially miyazaki films are some of my favourites, and this book does a good job at looking at the making of spirited away (the studio's most successful film) and the studio itself. however, while the book gives a good history of spirited away, i never found the analysis to be more than surface level, failing to give a full look at why a film that cares little about plot, strikes such an emotional chord with viewers

I enjoyed this book! It's super short, pretty digestible, and very interesting to read, especially as someone who can't really get enough of Miyazaki's work. My only wish is that we delved more into Spirited Away's symbolism, but learning about the process and history was also very interesting. It'd be cool to read something that is kind of like literary criticism but for Spirited Away (or any of Miyazaki's other films).

The front half really dialed in on the behind the scenes history and legacy of Ghibli itself. Plenty of expose on Miyazaki himself. That part was invaluable background. The back half sort of runs through the plot with some interesting asides. A much easier book to read than the Se7en one but this book series is utterly entrancing. I’ll have to cop a few more.

Enjoyable enough precis but in a format as short as this, why you'd waste your time on discussing various critiques of this lurid masterpiece from American journalists circa 2005 ('why does it have no plot', 'why is it not like Shrek') is beyond me.

This pleasingly understated, compact little book is engrossing, well-researched and well-written. From the first page I was hooked. Tons of nice tidbits and lovely, perfect descriptions of the great Miyazaki's works leading up to, informing, and following 'Spirited Away'. An accessible, easy, enchanting look at the history, culture and experiences that shaped and inspired the career and works of a brilliant man.
