Hard to Love #1

Hard Place

Rate this book
Cold. Callous. Cocky.

A total playboy with abs for days, a panty-melting smirk, and a face the gods themselves would be jealous of. And he’s my new boss. None of that matters, because as a single mom, men like Alexander Harding are the last thing I need. What I do need is this job, so I’m going to keep my head down, work hard, and avoid that asshole as much as humanly possible.

But then he gives me an offer I can’t refuse, even though everything inside of me is warning me to run away and never look back.

It’s just one weekend.

One weekend to convince a potential client that Alexander has changed from the player who spent more time in the bedroom than the boardroom into a family man they’d be happy to go into business with.

But the more time I spend with him, the more I realize that there might be a beating heart buried under his designer shirts and spectacular pecs after all…which is bad news for me.

Because the only thing worse than hating your boss is falling in love with him.

A new series from Emily Goodwin, erm yes please give me them all now!

Harper is a single mum of twins. She is struggling to get by and when a new job with more money lands in her lap. She can’t turn down the opportunity. Her new boss is known as a playboy. Harper can admit he’s attractive but she never expected to have such good chemistry with him.

This is an office romance. Rich guy and a single mum. This is the start of a continuous series.

Harper and Alex were such good characters. Both have their demons but their relationship blooms perfectly.

4.5 stars out of 5. I need the next book. Luckily it’s out in the near future.

*I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review. I like this author and would read anything she writes. This isn’t my usual read, but I enjoyed it all the same.

Yeah, I’m in a bit of a hard place right now, but I’ll figure it out.

Woah. I was not expecting that. Emily Goodwin, I think you may have given me an emotional heart attack. So basically Harper is a single mom of sweet twin girls. She’s struggling, but getting by with making lemons into lemonade. A promotion at work is just what she needs, but she ends up with a jerk boss. Alex is said jerk. He’s maybe mean and jerky for a reason. There’s also way more to him than meets the eye. This story is a lot of build, a definite slow burn start, but it works because Harper has reason not to rush things. This story is pretty much low angst. Easy, breezy, emotional, relatable, but... yeah.. mhmm maybe not as light and easy as one may think. I’ll end it there. Another great read from EG, and I can’t wait to see what comes next!!

It's pretty clear to y'all by now how much I'm a sucker for the office / enemies to lovers combo, and this one had the single parent mixed in and OMG I adored it.

I really liked her Harper and I loved her litle girls and how much she loved them. I didn't like Alex in my first glimpse of him but once we got inside his head, little by little he completely won me over. I adore him and gosh I can't wait to see what will happen in Hard Truth, what he'll say, what he'll do. Gosh he has so much potential to be the best boyfriend and daddy. I can't wait to see him open his heart to Harper and her two little girls.

Harper and Alex were fire together, even when they were fighting or trying to be strictly professional, meaning Alex acting like a complete d*ck to Harper. Yup, I loved it! Idk, it was fun and just added to the anticipation towards the moment it would all go down... and trust me it takes a while since this is pretty much a slow burn but once they can't stop fighting their connection and the incredible attraction between... wow is it combustible. I loved these two together. They go from enemies/co-workers to friends to lovers and gosh I can't wait to see what Emily has in store for these two specially after the bomb she through at us at the end of the book. I was shook and I'm scared too about all that is gonna play out. I think my favorite was definitely the "business" trip where they had to pretend to be a couple and sleep in the same bed. Gosh, that was such a bonding moment for them and I just loved every second. That almost kiss scene was probably my favorite scene of all. It was just so fairytale like, too bad they didn't actually kiss ahah.

So yeah, this is book one in the series and it does end with a cliffhanger. Harper and Alex's story doesn't end in this book and thank god because there is still so much to explore and get real about with these two. I highly recommend it if you like any of the tropes mentioned at the top of this review. Hard Place is fun, sexy, a bit angsty and overall adorable. I loved these characters and this couple and I cannot wait to get more of them.

DNF at 60%

All the wrong triggers. Don’t know why I pushed myself to try it anyways. Harper is a young mom of twins. Still no reveal at 60% on who/where of the baby daddy. She works to make ends meet and one fine day a promotion lands her to work for a different boss. The one with the big guns.

Alex is almost CEO to his dad’s company. Alex and his dad have serious beef cuz his dad slept around at work with his secretaries breaking his marriage to Alex’s mom. He was also an alcoholic and physically abusive. Not sure how a man like that pulled himself together to run a billion dollar firm. Oh actually scratch that. Alex did that for his dad’s firm. It was run of the mill back then but now it’s the usual millionaire playground.

I won’t be too harsh to judge it. I guess not all YA speaks to me. Harper is a bit of an opportunist. Too excited to get a chance to spread her legs and accidentally-on-purpose keeps hinting to her boss how she’s naked in the shower and dripping on the floor. Or. That she wants to ‘penis’ ahead (and blames that on autocorrect cuz she wanted to ‘plan’ ahead.)

I’d had enough with her needy, hussy ways without an ounce of reticence. Also it’s a slow burn so the romance has still not picked up. Alex is also hot and cold to Harper cuz his dad threatened him to not sleep with his secretary just like he, himself did.

Quick Take:
I enjoyed this book but I wish there wasn't a cliffhanger or else I would've waited for the next book to be out already! I am the most impatient person ever.
Alexander Harding is Harper's new boss and I think Emily Goodwin has a good take on the "faking a relationship" trope with these two. She doesn't keep it simple with just that one factor. There's private school moms, twins with an unknown baby daddy as well as family drama.
I loved Alexander Harding but Harper wasn't as interesting to me. If anything, I got annoyed with her hot/cold with Alex and was eager to skip her parts to get to Alex's POV. I hope to get more of him in book 2!

I say I need more Office Romances in my life and behold my furry friends, Emily Goodwin delivers to me this gem, whew, I am beyond excited for this new Hard to Love series and Hard Place set the bar pretty high for me. As a huge fan of the Love is Messy series and the Dawson Family Series, it is definitely Emily's contemporary romances that tug at my heart every darn time, she is my top auto-buy author. So here we are, want to know what I loved?

I was beyond obsessed with Harper. For starters, I loved her name. Let me just put that out there for you right now, the name Harper is amazing. And surprise surprise, I fell hard for her personality. Crazy I know, how many times do I actually fawn over the heroine in these things? True stories. But she did, Harper had me hooked the second she opened her mouth. She was sassy, honest, hard working and beyond perfect. I loved every flaw that was her character, every awkward mannerism, and I felt as if I was idolizing her with every page turned. Not only was she fun and quirky, she was a single mother from the start and I enjoyed immensely with how her daughters were. It humanized her, made her situation so believable.

Then we have Alex. Oh my stars, where to start. Okay, I loved his jerk complex because yeah, he was a jerk, he was snide and rude, and quite frankly he had this attitude about himself where he seemed as if he carried himself above others yet he had a really interesting soft side. Its always the alpha jerk offs who have the bigger hearts - well at least in my dreams. And yes, Alex is my dream fictional boyfriend. I liked how he carried himself, especially when dealing with his father, though he was working to prove himself worthy of the legacy that was his father, he was also quite to separate himself from the man he absolutely does not look up to, and with good reason. Not to mention there is a complete one-eighty difference on how he treats his father verses his sister, brother-in-law and nephew. It is almost as it that is his family and he honestly cherishes it, I liked the brotherly sister vibe between him and Nicole (granted they were the siblings) but it felt natural, fun and very causal with so much emotional baggage still left to touch between them. It honestly speaks volumes to why he is the way he is, I loved watching Harper crash everything to shambles with her personality and his attraction towards her...

Now for the part you want to know about, right? The romance. I gotta say, this was one of the most delicious slow burn romances, the build up was enticing. Harper and Alex went from a complete hatred towards one another, though be it attracted tension filled hatred, to basically trying to tolerate the other then to wanting to rip clothes off one another. It was great. These are the office romances I like! The tension is hot, fiery passion, keeping one another at a distance to try to stay professional but we all know that won't last, and when it crosses the line - fire works comrades. They had an intsa-chemistry factor from the second Harper is introduced as Alex's new secretary, everything about their connection sent me in overdrive.

And that cliffhanger! Like, how can you do this to me Emily, I thought we had something, I thought we were close - but nope, now I have to wait what, until October until I get my hands on Hard Truth? You are killing me smalls. I also can't help but wonder, is this a book one and two duet? And if so, who comes next? I cannot figure this out.

Bottom line, I thoroughly enjoyed Hard Place. It was the right amount of hatred tension in a lot of Office Romance to send my heart into a tizzy. Slow burn in the most deliciously tortuous ways, fun, entertaining and beyond adorable. I enjoyed everything about the characters, their personalities, their personal struggles, it was believable - dare I say relatable. Hard Place was definitely entertaining, every aspect literally had me either chuckling or swooning. Basically everything I would expect from Emily Goodwin at this point.

⭐️ 5 "Make Lemonade" Stars ⭐️
As a fan of the enemies to lovers and office romance tropes, I was so excited about Hard Place! It promised everything I’m fond about in those types of stories; the humour, sweet moments and the definite chemistry between Harper and Alex made this read totally gripping! Emily Goodwin shows once again why she’s one of my go-to author in contemporary romance with this charming story!

Harper is a truly engaging heroine that enjoyed a lot with her sweet and quirky personality. She’s so genuine and when she’s nervous and word vomits, it’s hilarious. Those moments definitely made me crack up a lot! She would do anything for her twin girls and when she lands herself a promotion at work, it’s a chance to better their lives! Little Violet and Penny are a dynamic duo that doesn’t make being a single mom always easy, but they’re so precious and provide lovely scenes that put a big smile on my face!

Alex is also an interesting hero. That man hides behind a player façade, but inside he just feels like something real is missing from his life. It’s truly poignant to see him being so attracted to Harper, but repressing his growing feelings because he doesn’t believe in love and he’s her new boss. He’s so tempting with his beautiful personality when you get to know the real man behind the jerk!

The attraction between Alex and Harper is so palpable and every moment they share is mesmerizing. The animosity at first, transforming into understanding and shared jokes is perfect. I must say that the slow burn in this book nearly killed me. I so wanted them to finally take the plunge into something romantic and the anticipation was excruciating, but so worth it!

I adored Hard Place! I constantly had a grin on my face from all the swoony scenes and comic ones. I finished this book with my heart so full of emotions of all kind! I need book two, Hard Truth ASAP!!!

Such a great book! I fell in love with Harper immediately. I think any mom can easily relate to her parenting struggles and the REALNESS of motherhood. It's not always pretty. I set myself up to not like Alex, but he really is a good guy who happens to be dealing with personal "stuff." This just makes his character more relatable. I got so caught up in this book, I didn't realize I was at the end until it ended. Luckily book two isn't far away, I can't wait to see where that twist takes them. Although I'm going in Team Alex all the way!

Harper is a frazzled, hard-working mom of twins whose first meeting with her new boss is less than pleasant. And that was before she found out who he was. Oh boy...but once these two meet on mutual ground, they find there's an attraction that neither wants or has time for. She needs this job, so she cannot possibly have a thing with her boss. He needs to impress a potential client, though, so will she pretend to help him close the deal? What about when feelings catch fire?

Hard Place is a great start to a new series. It's a slow burn office romance with lots of tension, witty, snarky dialogue and chemistry that is obvious from their very first, not so cute meeting. Now I can't wait for Hard Truth. October can't come soon enough for this reader!

Hard Place was flirty, humorous, and just the slightest bit angsty.
It featured some of the following popular romance tropes:

Enemies-to-lovers
Office Romance
Strong single Mom
Fake relationship

If you enjoy any or all of those tropes, you do not want to miss this charming read.

Emily really brought her characters to life. She gave them strengths, weaknesses, fears, flaws, and clear personalities. Harper was a lovable and relatable heroine. She was quirky, kind and caring in nature, and was an amazing Mother. Alex started off as a total cocky asshole, but we began to see different layers to his character as Harper got to know him a little better. We got to know more of the real Alex and I grew to love him as I got further into the story.

As a pair, Alex and Harper had a great dynamic. I loved the back and forth playfulness. Their silly bantering was entertaining and just the overall cuteness of their interactions made it really easy to root for their relationship to shift and grow. Their romance was a sweet, slow burn, but all that build up was so worth it when they finally gave in to their feelings.

And just when you thought things were headed in the right direction, a shocking surprise is thrown in their path, and you're left wondering-

just where do they go from here?

Emily Goodwin's new series is off to a promising start and I'm eager to find out how the story will continue in book two!!

I so enjoyed this book and can't wait for the next one (this ends in a cliffhanger). Harper Watson is a single mother to twin daughters and all she wants is to be able to give them the best life possible. When she's given an opportunity to get a pay rise by working as assistant to one of her company's bosses, she takes it - only to find Alex Harding is cold and unnerving to be around.

That is, until he starts to relax around her. Harper Watson is unlike any woman Alex has ever met. Most people don't know the man underneath the persona, but Harper manages to worm her way into his heart and has him wanting to break his cardinal rule of never getting involved with an employee.

But just as their relationship starts to heat up, another person throws a spanner in the works - will Alex lose the woman he's fallen in love with? We'll have to wait for the next book to find out, and I for one can't wait to read it!

Hard Place is right, wow that ending. How Emily could leave us like that is not surprising but it has be just as excited for book 2. Alex and Harper had chemistry from the beginning and continuously fought on it, because of their work positions. This book spoke to me on so many levels because come from a single mom, so I've seen the struggle Harper goes through to make sure her twins have everything. It made me love her more as a character.

A slow, chemistry off the charts book. I can not wait for book 2! I NEEED IT!

5 HARD PLACE STARS!! OMG....what a way to start a new series. I read this book in one sitting. Alex is Harper's boss and a rich playboy that is not looking to settle down. These two have a tense relationship, but their chemistry is off the charts. Their story has all the feels and has you pulling for these two. That ending is killing me.....I need the next book Hard Truth....like now.

First thoughts: Sort of loosely pulled together in the beginning and I halfway considered putting it down. Harper seemed almost too sweet. The story seemed like something I'd read before. About halfway through, I think, things started to pull together and people started to get more interesting, as did the story. I still think things could have been tightened up by a good 20%. It would give it a better pace and create better tension. The ending was a complete surprise. As in not at all what I was expecting. Recommended.

Oh My Gosh!! This book Y’all! Freakin Fantastic! It is the most magical inner- office/enemies to lovers/fake relationship of a single parent romance ever!! The office part added a forbidden aspect to it. Yum! So Flippin Awesome!! Harper and Alex’s story will turn even the most cynical of hearts into a gooey mess.

Let’s start with Harper. This amazing Gal, Y’all! She is spunky and beautiful and although she unexpectedly became pregnant with her twins at twenty years old and had to drop out of college the last semester of her senior year, they are her life! She literally lives paycheck to paycheck and relies on hand me downs from the neighbor for clothes for the girls.

She gets an incredible job offer for a promotion at her company to be assistant to one of the top executives. It’s literally the opportunity of a lifetime for her and her girls. This job could get her out of the red and pave the way for an easier life for her and her girls. How will she react when she finds out the total rich jerk from the parking lot she let have it is her new boss? What will happen when she sees there is much more to Alex that this rich, jerk of a playboy? Could he be the Prince this Disney knowledgeable Princess has been waiting for?

Alexander “Alex” Harding was our totally bad boy of the boardroom. One look you know the ladies would do just about anything to have him taking them to his bed room. At first glance Harper thought he was just another entitled rich jerk. The more she gets to know him, the more she realizes there is so much more to him than she ever thought. Harper soon begins to dream about the forbidden what if’s with Alex. Will sparks fly or will her crush fizzle out when she’s forced to pretend that they are in a committed relationship on a business trip? With tension at an all time high between Alex and his Dad, what will happen when he suspects Alex has a crush on his new assistant?

And what will happen when things are finally going in the right direction and the past shows up to potentially throw everything off? Will Harper find herself between a rock and a “Hard Place?”

Don't miss this jaw dropping new office romance by Emily Goodwin. It is hot enough to melt your kindle and you are gonna love this sassy heroine and her sweet mini-ME's! Get ready for ALL THE SPARKS AND HEAT!! Because Alex and Harper are Smokin' Hot!

My cr8zysockbookblock blog wrap up for this book!

This is my first book by this author and, I gotta say, I really enjoyed the writing for the most part. I did, however, have a few quibbles.

Harper - A big to-do is made of her ethnicity, but Harper is a purely Anglo name. And there doesn't seem to be any reason for this; no cute story from her mother as to why a woman who was so proud of her heritage chose a name almost as white as "Becky".

Next, she bemoans the fact that her one-and-only one night stand resulted in her pregnancy. I get that she wouldn't change a thing because she loves her daughters, but her later behaviour doesn't tell me that she's actually learned her lesson. (I almost gave up at this point because really, girl?)

I can forgive all that because the portrayal of a single mother of twins, and the struggles she deals with on a daily basis, were all painfully real.

Alex - So tired of the unfeeling whore trope. In fact, his introduction comes when he is in bed with another woman (or she's just gone into the bathroom, but still). This just grossed me out. I know some people have a hard time with the main couple being with other people after meeting The One, and I agree. But I also take it a step further and once we've met Harper, I don't want to have to picture Alex with anyone else. (I'm not saying he can't have a past. Lots of male characters talk about previous liaisons. I don't want to envision it while reading a romance.)

But I liked how he was with Penny and Violet. Not overly uncomfortable or "out of his element", just straight up caring and utilising his uncle-ing skills to help out.

Also, I'm not a fan of a supposed best friend advising casual sex as Harper's bff does. She knows what happened during the last attempt at this. She knows that Harper isn't that kind of person. Why would you encourage your friend whom you supposedly care about to act completely against type? Not only does it not make any sense, it's a tired trope that never works out. You know, because it goes completely against the character's nature.

Plus, I'm not a fan of cliffhangers. Often times I find the story drags on for too long, simply in order to fit into a second book. I'm not saying I refuse to read them, it's that the events in the books feel contrived and hold no surprises for me. (I knew exactly how this one was going to go, and I'm about 80% positive I know how Book #2 is going to play out based on the set-up. No "shocking twist" for me. Not after reading upwards of 300+ books per year.)

However ... however ... the writing is really well done. The pacing is slow burn without being boring. The desire and attraction between Harper and Alex is hot and heavy. I was kept turning pages, loving how the story was playing out. I liked Harper's mom friends. Penny and Violet (again with the Anglo names?) were written well for their supposed ages; very believable.

I would like to know how the story plays out in Book #2, partly just to see how accurate my predictions are, but also because I do appreciate the author's writing style. I'd just like a little more originality, which I know can be done.

*I received this ARC from the author and Social Butterfly PR in exchange for an honest review.*

I think by now it's no secret that I am a huge fan of almost everything Emily Goodwin writes. So when I learned she was writing a new romance series that was an office romance, I had to make sure I got an early copy and I read this book. I have to say I was not disappointed. I loved everything about Hard Place and the angst and slow-burn was everything. I loved Harper so much. She was so down to earth, sweet, caring, and such an amazing mother. She put her children first all the time and that's what I loved about her so much. She felt guilty for not being able to provide them with everything she thought the needed and not having the energy or time to spend time and play with them. But she was also quirky and awkward. I could totally relate to her in that sense. Alex was amazing and I loved him from the start too. Learning his background and why he was the way he was made it so easy for me to relate to him. I totally understood his stance on love and relationships and why he was so adamant to be alone. He was a scarred man who finally found someone worth letting into his life when he met Harper and it was the same for her.

Emily did a good job of building up the sexual tension between Harper and Alex while slowly moving their relationship from strictly professional to something less so. The dynamic of their relationship was so well done and realistic. I loved everything about them. They fit together and it was clear they could offer each other something that would complete the other. I thought the slow-burn was really the best and that they danced around each other and their feelings for most of the book. When it all finally came to a head, it was that much more explosive and steamy.

And that freaking ending! I need Hard Truth right now, Emily! I am so excited for the next book and to see where Harper and Alex after the revelation at the end of the book. October cannot get here fast enough!

Hard Place (Book One in the Hard To Love Series) is a fast-paced enemies to lovers workplace romance. I always enjoy Emily and her amazing contemporary romances and I could not put this one down and devoured it in a few hours.
Harper is amazing. A young struggling single mother who is barely getting by financially but who loves her 5 year old twins more than life. You cannot help loving her, sympathizing for her and cheering her on. She’s strong, determined and always has a smile. When she gets the chance for a promotion she’s so happy, until she realizes she has to work for Alex; the man she hates.
Alex has so many layers. The CEO whose life looks perfect because he’s good looking, rich and successful. However, he’s hiding so much and I felt like he doesn’t really know who he is. He has real issues and you feel his pain as it is palpable and heartbreaking.
The chemistry and attraction between them was immediate but Harper is his assistant and she cannot lose this job because that would ruin her. This is a delicious slow burn as they dance around each other and get to know each other. You see the history of what made them who they are...the struggles, the pain, and the strength. You want them together. As they work together and get to know each other should they resist each other? Could this be the real thing? Or are they designed to be colleagues and maybe friends forever?
This story had so much passion from the beginning when Harper hated Alex until that passion finally pulled them together. Dialogue was witty and I loved that the story had some substance to it with a struggling single mother and the history/issues Alex had.
This is part of a Duet so we are left with a cliffhanger and when I say left hanging I mean I literally screamed because it ended SO good. I am completely invested in Harper and Alex and cannot wait for Book 2 in October.
Hard Place releases on September 12 and will be Kindle Unlimited. I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Harper is a single mother to twin girls, living paycheck to paycheck. So when she's offered a chance to move up, even just temporarily with a pay raise she jumps at the chance. Now personal assistant to Alexander Harper- cold, callous playboy. He doesn't like her- but the feeling is mutual. So what happens when Alex offers her an offer she can't refuse- despite the many warning signs she should? Spend a weekend pretending to be his girlfriend to give investors the illusion that Alex isn't the same cocky playboy.

What is worse then hating your boss? Falling in love with him.

I loved everything about this book. Harper is a strong single working mother, trying to do what is best for her daughters. They may not have a lot of money living pay check to pay check, and may live in a bad part of town, but Harper is doing everything she can to give the girls what they need.

Alex is the son of the founder of the company. He's cocky, and cold, and a notorious play boy. What he didn't expect was Harper mouthing him off in the school parking lot. And then her showing up as his new assistant the next morning. She is unexpected to say the least.

Now these two must work with each other. Hating one another comes easy. Nevermind the undeniable attraction they feel. But an office romance? Not going to happen... It can't. It would be way to complicated. But what happens when the attraction they feel for one another turns into something... More?

I seriously loved this book.

If you love enemies to lovers, office romance, single parent, angst or any combination of the four then you need to grab this book! I loved these two characters apart, and together. I cannot wait for more from this series, and to find out what happens next. 5 angsty ⭐ out of 5⭐.

To date, this may be one of my very favorite Emily Goodwin series. I rank it right up there with Luke and Lexi in Hot Mess and Twice Burned--as those have yet to be dethroned as my favorite by her.

Hard Place was an incredible story about a hardworking single mom who would do absolutely anything, literally anything, for her children. And a hard-a--, cold, rude, outwardly impenetrable businessman who believes in nothing more than work and a good time. Now, admittedly, single parents are my jam. I love a story with kids in them. LOVE! But this isn't just another one of those stories. It is so much more.

Harper is strong, she is resilient, she's beyond relatable (even to a single, childless person writing this review), and she is a wonderful heroine. Did I mention she's an incredible mom? Because she is.

Alex is cold, rude, and outwardly impenetrable when it comes to others wants, emotions, and needs; yet there is also a piece of him, beneath the incredible, tailored suits, beneath the cold exterior that is sweet, caring, and good.

The question becomes can they overcome their pasts, who they are now, what they've always known to maybe make things work after their one weekend fake relationship throws them into a spiral of desire, hope, and need?

Well...

Only time will tell, as this story is not over yet. I absolutely cannot wait to get Hard Truth in my eager, impatient hands to see what happens next.

4.5 Stars

The start of this new series by Emily Goodwin is definitely just the beginning of what will become every bit addicting.

Harper is a single mom of twins. She’s struggling to get by and is trying her hardest to provide for her daughters. When a new job with better pay becomes available, she can’t turn down the opportunity to better her financial situation. Harper is such an amazing mom and will do everything she can for her daughters. She’s selfless, caring, quirky, kind and lovable. A real and down to earth heroine, loved her.

Alex is a workaholic. He eats, sleeps and breathes his job. He’s known for being a playboy. Alex started off as being a cocky jerk, but slowly we started to see different layers to his character. And we got to know the real Alex once those layers were peeled back, and that’s the Alex I grew to like.

Harper and Alex were such great characters. Their banter was entertaining and downright adorable. I loved their back and forth playfulness. Their romance was a sweet slow burn that made the build up so worth it.

Hard Place had a little bit of everything. An office romance with enemies-to-lovers and a dash of a fake relationship. A promising start to a new series I need more of. And after that cliffhanger, which by the way, I freaking knew it, I need the second book, now!

*I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book*

Great book by Emily Goodwin! I have read her dystopian romance series, but not one of her contemporary romances, and was pleasantly surprised with how good this book was-- I give it a 4.5 outta 5 stars!

Harper is a single mother of twin girls and it is hard. She gives everything for them, but living paycheck to paycheck is always a struggle, but she does it and does a freaking amazing job with it. When she gets a promotion to work under Alex, she believes he is a jerk and has a stick up his butt even though he has had everything always handed to him. Let's just say that everything is NOT what it seems and there is way more under this guy's layers.

I love Harper, she is seriously awesome and I am a huge fan. It takes just a bit longer to warm up to Alex, but with his POV, it definitely helps. I also liked how the story progressed, but I kept looking down at how much I had left and was like wait, is everything going to be figured out in time?! Guess what lovely readers--- THERE IS A CLIFFHANGER and it is shocking!!! I am not a huge fan of those and at least like to be warned beforehand, which is why this is listed as 4 stars and not 5, but it was amazing up until that point and I recommend you checking it out!

PS: Thank you to Emily Goodwin and Social Butterfly PR for allowing me an advanced copy to read and review honestly!

Hard Place is the first book of a new series. It has so many tropes that I love (single mom, enemies to lovers, office romance and a fake relationship).

Harper is an amazing heroine. She is a single mom to two twin girls, she is hard working and it is so easy to love her, to root for her. No matter what she always has a good attitude and will make lemonade with lemons. Alex is like an onion, there are many layers to him. He is a CEO, a great brother and uncle, but has a complicated relationship with his father. I feel like there is still more to his character that we don’t know yet and maybe, Alex himself hasn’t discovered.

I love the chemistry between Alex and Harper. There is an instant attraction between them. Harper wants to hate Alex, but the more she gets to know him that becomes difficult. Alex wants more to life, he wants to different from his father, but Harper is his employee and he doesn’t want to risk anything. I love that Alex is willing to help Harper, he would probably do anything for her and even her sweet baby girls.

I devoured this book. I couldn’t put it down. I love the depth of the characters and the story. This is the first book and does end on a cliffhanger. I can’t wait for the next one and to see where Harper and Alex’s story goes.

Harper is a single mother whose five year old twin daughters are her world so although she struggles financially she wouldn’t change a thing. She would do anything for them and that includes accepting a promotion at work even if it means working for a man she would rather avoid.

There was never any question about Alex’s business skills, but it is reputation when it comes to his personal life that is causing waves. He may come across as arrogant but there is so much more to this man than first appears.

When he needs her help to convince a client that he is not the playboy they believe things are about to get complicated. Spending the weekend together in close confines causes the chemistry between them to ignite but sometimes the past has a way of resurfacing at the worst possible time.

This is the first part of a duet that leaves us wanting not only more time with Harper and Alex but the secondary characters as well. Hot chemistry, witty banter and just enough angst to keep it entertaining.

Loved loved Alex and Harper. Beautiful Harper was the single mom of adorable identical 5 year old girls. She’s dedicated her entire life to them. She hardly has any friends, social life etc. Her life revolves around those girls. Alex is a rich but broken. When him and Harper meet the first time it wasn’t the best impression. But joke was in high because the following day she finds out he’s her new boss and he finds out she’s his new assistant. It starts out rocky but then it has its moments. She’s hot but quirky and sweet all wrapped in one. Alex is nice and sweet but broken because of his childhood and his despise of his dad. But him and Harper get close and it’s entertaining and oh so sweet. But then came the omg cliffhanger!!!!!! What the what!!!! One of the things I loved was Alex with the twins and his relationship with his nephew, ❤️.

Cliffhanger - Beware

I have loved every book by Emily Goodwin I've read and never imagined this would be any different. But when I got to 88% read, I thought that there are an awful lot of side stories going on, how will they be resolved by the end, especially when Harper and Alex haven't even kissed yet? None of her books I've read have stretched our so much, but this PART 1 has too much repetition of Harper fretting about being a single mom and wanting a better, safer home for her daughters, and too much of Alex's thoughts about his a$$hole father and not wanting to be like him-which of course means he can never do relationships. SO DISAPPOINTED. I refuse to follow authors, and get sucked into buying additional books, who write cliffhangers. Publish a longer book, if you have so much story to tell, but NO MORE CLIFFHANGERS.
