Academy of Sorcery #1

Year 1, Unleashing Trials

Rate this book
Magic is dangerous.

I should know. It got me a thirty-year sentence scrubbing toilets for a scumbag wizard.

My only hope is the Unleashing, a ceremony that unlocks the dormant powers of magical descendants when we turn eighteen. Since my mom was a lowly psychic, I don’t expect to be blessed with much more than the ability to forecast the weather.

But when the sorcerers unlock my magic, all hell breaks loose. Turns out, I’m not a wizard, witch, or even a sorcerer. I’m…something else.

Because of my unique abilities, I’m required to attend the Academy of Sorcery until I learn to harness and control my magic. Not only that, but the three sexiest and most powerful sorcerers on campus are assigned to guard me night and day. Jackpot, right?

Not quite.

Turns out these guys aren’t too happy with the arrangement, and they show it by making my life hell. That’s just the beginning of my troubles. The mean-girl squad declares open season on me, a mysterious woman attacks me every time I step off campus, and my professor is too hot for his own good. And when it’s time to find a weapon to help me master my abilities, my magic chooses… a spork.

It’s going to be a long year.

Good thing I have what it takes to survive it.

BLACKLIST-DNF Series -WILL NEVER READ AUTHOR AGAIN

🤬This was some Bull Shit! Major cheating zero remorse or grovel! And it’s at 80% in! The whole time I thought they were building a romance turns out they were fucking OW the WHOLE time.

-🖕🏻h is a magic priestess w sex magic she is super powerful

-🖕🏻her harem are really drawn to her sex magic

-🖕🏻She makes them so hot but when she won’t sleep w them cause she isn’t ready….

-🖕🏻They fuck her enemies and bullies! With Zero Remorse. 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻

-🖕🏻They let her enemies -that they are fucking right in front of her -BULLY her and don’t stop it.

-🖕🏻They tell her ITs HER FAULT cause she makes them so hot and won’t satisfy their needs so until she is willing to just deal with it🤯

-🤯So I read this thinking it was a straight up Academy w some light bully. 🖕🏻Then 80% in we find out that all her men are fucking the girls who have been bullying her WHILE looking the other way-LITERALLY- they look 👀 at the wall or ceiling and even go so far as to DEFEND the bully! Well yeah they are fucking them!

-🖕🏻They find out that her enemy stole her magic and that’s why the guys fucked them. So ALLs GOOD now. No apology! No remorse! No Grovel! Nope

-🖕🏻So her only worth is based on her magic?! You can’t even stop it when she’s called Dumpster Trash? They looked at the fucking wall 👀 and then fucked the bullies! So now that she has her magic back she’s worth defending!? Worth treating right!?

-🖕🏻This Doormat FMC is so desperate for these douche bags that she accepts whatever they give her and pines aways the whole time they are in her face fucking OW and then takes them back like it ain’t a thing!

🖕🏻🖕🏻FUUUUUUCK THAT🖕🏻🖕🏻
This is disgusting and I had no clue it would be like this so 🖕🏻fuck this author 🖕🏻fuck her blindsiding me 🖕🏻I will never read this author again!

This is why I do research before reading a book. I was stupid this time and just jumped into it with my book buddy. NEVER AGAIN.

Can we just stop woman hating already!

*spoilers ahead in one huge ranting party*
I'm really pissed about this book. It started out good even though the whole orgie inducing magic power was a little bit much. But I could handle it as I liked the heroine and her harem guys well enough. I could also handle that most of the time nothing really happens except orgie inducing magic.
But I could absolutely not handle that for the most part of the book 3 of her guys were sleeping with her enemys. I mean come on....they stole her magic and nearly forced them but I got the feeling they were ok with it.....and then that dumb explanation that they needed a way to work it out and it was her magic so they were really sleeping with her in their minds.....riiiiiiiiiight.
My skin was crawling most of the time. That is something I can't take in a book. And what I hate even more is that these b*tches got away with it with a slap on the hand.
And our heroine of cause forgives them nearly right away as she can only think about how hot they are most of the time...bleh.
Get a little dignity and respect yourself, girl.

3.5 rounded up

While I enjoyed the unique world building of this book, it seems to lack a certain punch that would solidify it as a good novel. All the pieces are there, but they don’t write fit right. Regardless, it was still interesting and I’ll probably check our book 2, just to see what the high priestess does. Plus there’s that taboo aspect with the teacher I just love.

Pros:
- World building is intriguing.
- Asher, he’s cool.
- The Bella’s.... they are so trite and petty that I can’t help but love them, though you are obviously supposed to hate these typical mean girls.

Cons:
- kind of a bully romance.
- I do NOT get the emotional connection here, it literally makes no freaking sense.
- Some things happen far too fast.
- Forgive and forget my butt.

I am not sure how I feel about this. Not a lot happened in the story really. Her orgy magic was a little.....I don't know...much.
I didn't like how the men explained them sleeping with her enemy. Come on that really had my rolling my eyes in frustration.

I'd continue the series to see where the story goes.

Reading the blurb, I was hooked at spork :) James and Phoenix have created an interesting paranormal world. Jade is basically an indentured servant, but she just turned 18 and everyone with possible magic, has to go to the Unleashing when they turn 18. Jade’s magic is unleashed and she finds herself immediately taken to the Academy with 3 sorcerers as her guards. Thre is tension between Jade and her guards, mean girls, humor, and a sassy spork :) I can’t wait to see what happens next!

1 Star: CHEATING
Disclaimer: Please remember that these are my opinions and if you feel differently, that’s okay. Thanks!

RATING SYSTEM:
5 – Absolute Love
4 – Enjoyed it
3 – Kind of Neutral
2 – Forced myself to finish, it was bad
1 – Couldn’t finish it, Horrible

Notes: POV = 1st person, FMC
Characters: Jade is a doormat. I don’t want to talk about it. Every love interest sucks, too.
Plot/Story: She’s supposed to be one in a million, super special, very important and considered a High Priestess and yet they have zero respect for her? In what world would you treat someone like this if you want them to help you? I would let them train me and then leave and kill anyone who tried to control me again, including them. What a dumb fucking decision.
Romance: No. These guys let her be bullied, mocked, locked up… I can’t. They are terrible. Light bully romance?? What do these authors think dark bully romances are?? Physical violence?? These guy fuck other girls!! But it’s okay, right?
General: Everything was so forced. The bully girls are copy/paste mean girls, their insults are stupid and the only reason their bullying even matters is because the guys who are supposed to end up with our FMC look the other way. The “chemistry” is forced, Jade’s “smart mouth” is forced, even the love interests being super hot is shoved down my throat.

Overall:
I’m upset that I even bothered reading this a second time.

This book was really hard to get but I did on amazon and well here I am after what feels like eternity (but was probably a couple of hours) to write this review.
I was quite torn about how I really felt about this book. And this is because of one reason. The RH part of the book. I mean this is a Pranormal Romance book.
I was really intrigued by the Paranormal part. The FMC, at the unleashing, is told she has powerful magic and high status in the supernatural world, she is required to got to the academy, have bodyguards, blah blah blah. Anyway, the best part probably was her gay bf Asher, who was a fun character and her magic vessel i.e. the aforementioned Spork that can turn into anything you imagine from a sword to a shoelace (which I totally called it). I didn't really like the FMCs attitude that much. She had the habit of biting off more than she can chew, like she would threaten somebody and then something embarrassing would happen and she would just bail instead of following through.
The actual problem was with the Romance part of the book. I hated the romance part of the book. See I understand that painting the MMCs of the book, any book, as a**holes makes them I don't know charming or whatever and I would have been cool with it (god knows I have read my fair share of detached, cold & jerkface MCs) but then they went on to date the bitch squad of the school cause "her sex magic was getting to them and she wouldn't take care of them herself".
[Now I had once read this book (non-paranormal) where the basic plotline was there were 2 highschool sweethearts. The girl wasn't ready to have sex so she wouldn't let it get that far and the guy got frustrated cause he has "needs" and went and slept with another girl to satiate himself. If you consider this cheating then so is that.]
Like the FMC was a virgin. You can't just ask her to sleep with you just because of her magic (her feelings matter too). Like I thought she and the guys were having, what they call in kdramas, a "SSeomtada relationship" (something kinda relationship). They all betrayed her trust and rubbed it in her face, worst of all Rocco, and hurt her feelings on multiple occasions just because they were better than her (I'm not kidding. One idiot called her easy even though he initiated the kiss). She should have just drop-kicked them into another dimension.
I would have loved to see how the story unfolds but I can't just take those morons. Also, if by any tragic happenstance she losses her v-card to Rocco in the next book I'm gonna kill somebody. I'd rather just drop the series then endure the torture.

Academy of Sorcery Review

I really liked the start of the book but I couldn’t get past the MMC sudden change in personality mid way through the novel, and not in the insta-love way. It just ruined the fantasy for me. No matter how much the author tried to explain it away saying it was a side effect of the magic, I just couldn’t care about them anymore.

Trash. Straight, hot trash. I dunno if I should get on the author's case for writing the heroine the way she did or applaud her for writing an annoying 18 year old so believably.

This book has really sealed my decision to never again read 'new adult who suddenly comes into a lot of money/power and is floundering around despite wishing for this very same scenario every day of their lives'

This girl, (because, let's be real that's what she is) tells us that she has been dealt a rough hand in life, she grew up in the 'ghetto', has seen some shit, dealt with things people her age never had too and therefore knows how to handle herself. She even carries a switchblade in her shoe just to show how bad ass she is.

This teenager is dumb as rocks. She is so dumb.

She is in an indentured servitude contract for 30 years for reasons to a slimy, heinous, corrupt, truly repulsive person. On her 18th birthday she along with every other person with any magical ability has to get tested and have their powers released at the magical university. The first chapter of this book is her arguing with her dad on why she should go this unleashing, she even has an invitation! Tell me why she hands over the invite to her boss and is surprised that he laughs in her face, tears it up and tells her she can't go. Like, dumbass. What did you expect?

So she gets rescued is whisked away to the university and her powers are revealed. She is explicitly told to keep her scrawny, blonde hair (I swear to god the amount of times it's mentioned she has blonde hair I rolled my eyes so much I'm now overly familiar with how my orbital bones look from the inside.) having ass inside the school compound. You are important to us so we will expend resources to keep what's important to you safe. Furthermore, the head of the supernatural community says and I'm paraphrasing here 'fuck your contract, fuck your employer. I rank higher than that son of a bitch and if I say don't worry, leave that in the past.' Then don't worry, right? Leave. That. Shit. In. The. Past.' so what does brainiac do?

She sneaks out, hotwires a car and heads... back to work. Not to her father that she was crying about, being so worried about earlier to give him a heads up, but back to the slimy fuck who she no longer has to work for. Smooth brain behaviour. Like a marble. Because the man who could trap you in that kind of contract isn't above trapping your magic and you just walked back into his house. Stupid.

There's also this thing where everyone and everything else are one dimensional props to the story except the love interests. There is a school of light and dark, and sorcerers of whom 3 are her love interests are dark magic users. But oh, they're not evil, they are just able to channel the magic and not let it consume them.
So why wasn't this care of thought applied to her insta best friend (who is for some reason mousy and shy to her blond and vivacious. Hmmmm) who was called to the school of necromancy? And we rarely see her throughout the book except in brief glimpses were she seems folding under the pressure of not being evil. Oh well! we have dicks to pretend we don't see sooo, hard luck there bestie. It's a shame we have no idea what's going on with you. (There's a part towards the end of the book where its revealed that the best friend is coerced into doing something hurtful towards blondie and I'm absolutely confused at this. Because what is she being blackmailed with? What is the leverage that the blackmailers are holding over her? We don't know because none of this is explained. Just that she was bullied into it. I don't think that this was even something that occurred to the author to address because everyone, even the love interests to some extent are treated as cardboard cutouts. Scenic props for the most parts.)

Another thing that's a prop is her chosen weapon. If there's bespelled weapons in this universe that acts as an extention of your magic why does she need a wand? Girl, who cares about logical consistency at this point?
Her weapon is a spork. It's old, it's powerful and has inscriptions on it. How old? Who was the last person who wielded it? What innate power does it have that it chose blondie to be its new weilder? What do the inscriptions say? What's its history? Who the fuck knows? Not blondie and certainly not us. Does this school even have a library?

A major plot point of this book is that the spork has been stolen and been bespelled to make it hard to find. This is a magical school, she has a great deal of power, one of her potential lovers is a powerful magical sorcerer who happens to be a teacher on magical objects. Do you see where I'm going with this? Because WHYYYY no one thought to say hey! Let's teach blondie a spell to channel her magical energy to find the I dunno, magical frequency of her spork because she has spent weeks with it at this point and should know what it feels like, magically to her, and break the spell that's trapping it. Or at least lead her to it. But that's too hard, kinda like the dicks that surrounds blondie and because all that blood is down there and not in their heads and thats why she was running around like a headless chicken for half the year and no one thought of this solution. Is no one thinking in this book?

My last gripe is the age gap romance between her and her teacher. Like, he has some sense at least because he's aware of the power imbalance of it all and is well aware of the consequences so he doesn't go very far with her. However, she doesnt. And doesn't care when she's told why it can't happen. She's very brave, like 'I don't care about your age, I like you' but when one of her bullies threatens to out them all that bravado goes out the window. Where is all that brave energy ho? Let her call the po-po.
And remember when I said she has fluff for brains? Why would you let the person who blackmailed your 'best friend', who stole your chosen weapon and bespelled it to hide it from you, stole your mens because she was siphoning off your magical energy to trick them and tried to get you to flunk out of school because you didn't have said magical item off with a warning? Because you're afraid of people finding out you have the hots for teacher?

Like GIRL. FRIEND! The bully is also 18 and should have caught an ass beating of a lifetime and that's how I know she's not as hard as she tells herself she is. She would never be found you hear me? Not nary a particle of an atom. A piece of a piece of dust would be the sum of her existence. She went very low and it would have been blonde's right to go even lower, like earth's crust low. You is the high priestess of sex! Lilith herself wants to tutor you and you let her off with a WARNING???!!? Clearly this school taught you nothing but your upbringing taught you nothing as well? You dumb! Very fucking dumb frfr. Now I see why your mom and then you got trapped in that contract. Whole family just stupid.

Really disappointed

The book is well written, meaning the grammar is ok, but the characters are disappointing. The FLC is beyond selfish and childish with no clear thought process. She is like a 5yr old with instincts to match. She's bullied and treated like crap for no reason other than she was chosen as what amounts to being a succubus (but called a priestess). She has 3 guardians and a professor she wants to bang. Thorn is supposed to be the stoic who doesn't talk much but doesnt hold back judging her, Rocco is supposed to be the playful carefree but comes across more as the perverted leech and Ryker is supposed to be the strong leader but uses his anger against her because he can't screw her (can you say potential spousal abuser here?) Her guards are pathetic who have no sense of protecting but to jail her and drag her around like a dog. Her enemies are a bunch of high school mean girls drowning in jealousy who steal her power storage, sending the FLC into having to learn how to shed and harness her power without it. The school is highly affected with people having sex left and right and dummy is clueless. AND its her fault. There is no sense of justified closure at the end of the book as the culprit walks away. This story really is everywhere, there are a lot of unanswered questions and the author got carried away with what ever tangent their mind went to without closing off thoughts. I hope book 2 is better and answers all the unanswered.

2-2.5 stars..

Kept my attention, but didn't feel any chemistry between the FMC and the guys...

Honestly I skimmed most of the book and I didn't feel like this book did anything. I was bored but the writing was easy to read that it kept me engaged.

And the fact that Jade forgave the guys really fast didn't fit..

Overall if you want a better version of this story I recommend Wicked Webs, that one was perfection in my eyes. haha

Good start????

I liked this book and where ( I think) it's going. My main issues were with the guys( that we learned absolutely nothing about) and the choices to screw the bellas. Also jades easy apparent forgiveness of the betrayal. I'm hoping that there is some major groveling and growth in book two. I dont know if I can take a whole series of petty back and forth.

I finally finished a book in one sitting and didnt have to force myself through it so hence the 4 stars lol its probs more of a 3 because its pretty obvious and the relationships are weird and teen drama bs and stereotypical tired bitchy mean girl bs and like ugh but the concept and the world and what not was cool and even i she was a little naive or a little dumb at parts i really loved the MCs humour and realistic self. Im not a massive fan of the gay best friend trope its so overdone and so typical and i just dont enjoy the concept it wouldve been way more original if El was her bff and asher the one who was dark and framing el or something idk just i think her having a female in her life that she can trust and rely on whose dark and more shy would be really good juxtapositon to her very extroverted self and powers and show that el seems more typical delicate light and she with her fists first approach is more typical dark and like idk theres enough guys characters with the RH there needs to be some esteogen that isnt just bitchy mean girl bullshit like ugh. Anyway despite my issues with the been there done that and general last half plot weirdness and wasnt executed great i still really enjoyed most of it and finished it so at this point in my 'in a super bad reading rut and am desperate for a new rh fantasy series' mode then this gets 4 stars. If the next book is not as good or preferably better now that hopefully all the dumb teen bs is overwith since theyre spose to be adults not 14yo psychos they ill be happy fingers crossed this series doesnt go down the drain for the love of sporks everywhere fucking please also we call them splades where im from and i fucking love them also one thing that is really ducking me off is she at one point in the book noticed there was something engraved or whatever in the spork and I AM YET TO FIND OUT WHAT THE FUCK THAT IS like excuse me tell me okay not cool also the guys were drugged and basically raped or whatever and they just leave it at oh ill get a fabour alls forgiven bs like not cool i want to see earthworm action thats a shit excuse like oh she was wearing your perfume and i was drunk so i fucked her type bs. Anyhoo lol onward and hopwfully upward please let this retain humour and not bs meh drama ness.

I wanted this book to be great, but I found it, sadly, lacking.

The MC went into high alert bitch mode straightaway, although people seem to be telling her the truth at every turn. Beyond that, I'm still not sure what world we're in. In the beginning there was a mention that Florida was no longer a tourist destination, and was mostly underwater, but then there was no other mention of it? So why did it matter?

Let's get to plot here!
First of all,

I guess, in total, there seemed to be no reason for why anything was happening. Why is being even important? Why couldn't you get with the guys immediately? Why is literally anything happening?

MOST IMPORTANTLY, I can't bear when an author makes their character unbelievably embarrassing. The poor MC was always embarrassing herself for absolutely no reason at all.

So... Happy Reading!

Well this was a blast to read. Slow burn to holy sexy! Well written, amazing characters and great world building!

I am SO Team Thorn though you can't not LOVE Ryker & Rocco ... even Darius is lovable.

Can Jade survive Freshman year? Will se harness her powers before Lilith can get her hands on her? Can the 4 sexy sorcerers save her and resist her?

I received this as an Advance Reader Copy from Booksprout with the hopes I would like it and review it.

Jade has always wanted to have magic. She's been fulfilling a servant's sentence in the place of her deceased mother but now she is 18 and must attend the Unleashing, a ceremony that unlocks the powers of magical descendants. Her mom was a seer, so there is a chance she will have magic. When her powers are unlocked, a primal power surfaces. One uncontrolled and powerful. Now she must attend the Academy of Sorcery to learn to control her magic. And because her magic is rare, she is in danger, and she is dangerous, so she is assigned three sexy sorcerers to be her bodyguards/babysitters.

Bully romance is not my favorite genre but I do find it addictive. I don't like that a girl is abused, degraded, and then immediately forgets the guys' behavior, forgives them, and falls in bed with them. No self-respect, no pride. But I accept that you must have a short memory reading this genre. What authors don't always take into account is that just because the lead female might forgive the guys doesn't necessarily mean that the reader will. These guys lost me. Their behavior with the other girls at the academy turned me off too much. I don't care about the circumstances. Too much happened to forget. Any relationship with Jade was ruined for me. Now I can only think that any relationship will be sexually driven due to her power. There's certainly no emotion involved. The only guy that makes the cut is Professor Darius. The forbidden one. Beyond the guys, Jade is immature at times. I believe the authors wanted her to be strong and street-wise but her tantrums cast her in a less worthy light. Finally, it bothered me that she was told that she was too powerful to be allowed to leave the academy, yet she was afraid that she would flunk out. These two statements conflict with one another. It's careless writing.

Is Forgiveness Really that Simple?

I would've given this book 3.5 starts but I rounded up. I really enjoyed this book until the end. We didn't get to see how the truth of who took her vessel really effected her world view. Then the "final final" threw me off too. I couldn't even read what was happening between her and her guards because I was so pissed about how they had treated her. How can you be immune to her magic but fall under someone else's spell using the same magic??? I liked the book but it felt like the author was promoting toxic masculinity at the end without any growth on the guys' part (which often seems to be the case in bully books). At the end of the day it felt like her "friend" and her guards needed to earn her trust back and they haven't done that yet. Instead everybody got a free pass to screw her over. I hope it's a part of her character growth to learn to forgive while still holding people accountable and not a serious character flaw. I think the next book will determine if I continue with the series.

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

OMG what a fascinating start to a new series!!! We get a girl that has had a rough life who is pinning her hopes on the unleashing ceremony on the chance that she has some kind of decent magic to make things better. After a fight to get there she gets the surprise of her life as her powers unlock. This will be way more to handle then she bargained for though it makes for a fun read. A nice foundation to what should be a great series. I really liked it so I give it 4/5 stars.

Hotter than hot!! Loved the sexual tension between the characters and I'm glad this book didn't jump into anything sexual too quickly. So it gave them time to gradually get to know each other and for their personalities to come out. As well as build on the guys (Thorn, Rocco, Ryker and Darius) relationship with Jade (the MFC). A steamy book but also a great story too. Can't wait for book 2

Magical World-building with a dash of Spice

This first entry set the scene for the rest of the series with its intricate world-building, complex characters, and interesting plot. It had tons of tension, a dash of spice, and enough intrigue to keep readers guessing. Since this is the first book in a series, this book ends on several plot cliffhangers. For those that need it, a list of possible triggers will be included at the end of my review.

This book introduced readers to its magical world in a simple yet informative way. It often had the main character gain knowledge right along with the reader, ensuring a suspenseful vibe throughout the book as the mysteries surrounding the MC slowly unravelled. Though the pacing was quick and utilized several small time jumps, the authors took their time with the important stuff in a way that felt natural when reading.

The tension-filled budding romances in this book were well written with each character having clear characterizations even this early in the series. As the series goes on and readers get to know the characters better, it’s clear the authors will create more depth for both each individual character, and their different relationships with the MC. There’s only a handful of fluff and spice in this first book since it focuses more on the world-building and setting up events for the next books, but it’s implied readers can expect more as the series goes on.

All parts of this book from the budding romances to the suspenseful plot came together to create a story that kept me fully entertained.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:
Major spoilers ahead.

Sexual assault:
This book has instances of SA that are just completely glanced over. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing in books, but I prefer to be as clear in these warnings as I can, so be aware that not even the characters really grasp or seemingly care that they were violated.

The MC’s power revolves around sex and sensually. It essentially takes consent away and blasts people with pure need when she loses control. When in control, she unconsciously emits a small dose of lust to her peers that doesn’t override their autonomy but still affects them to the point of being sometimes overwhelming. I think a general SA trigger warning is necessary for the entire book because of that.

To be more specific, the first time her power is revealed is in public at an assembly, and the audience is then influenced by the MC’s power to engage in intimate acts with whoever is around them while in a trance-like and need-filled state. The MC also experiences this along with the audience and gives on page descriptions of how it affects her and how she uses a stranger to fulfil her need (both stay clothed). This power influence happens a few more times throughout the book, but never to the extreme of the first reveal.

(MAJOR SPOILER) The MC’s power-holding weapon is later stolen in the book, and the enemies who stole it use the MC’s accumulated power to force others into having relationships with them. The characters don’t know they’re being magically manipulated into being attracted to the enemies, and don’t realize they're being forced to be in relationships with people they otherwise wouldn’t have been with/have directly said they weren’t interested in. Though it’s only alluded to once or twice, it’s never directly stated that the characters were violated and assaulted by the enemies who wielded the MC’s stolen power.

Aside from that, this book also includes: death of a parent and older sibling (off page), a character having implied depression and possible suicidal thoughts (off page), a ton of slut shaming (on page), misogyny (on and off page), other woman drama (on page), a few homophobic phrases (on page), mentions of modern slavery (on page), general violence (on page), a taboo relationship involving a teacher and a student (on page), and love interests being with other people while having a situation-ship with the MC (on page).

Academy of Sorcery 1

Total Score: 3/5

Summary:
If living in a world where everything is scarce and the weather goes form bad to worse is usual fare, Jade is forced to fulfill her mother’s her mother’s sentence of thirty-four years in servitude to Silas, a vampire. Her only hope is that she has hidden magical powers that could be released at the Unleashing, a mandatory ceremony for everyone from a magical family. Now Silas refused to allow Jade to go until two men arrived to ensure she attended. Now Jade’s mother was a psychic so no one expected here to have any magic, but what happened surprised even Jade. Her level of magic came with a price forcing Jade to be sequestered form the other students with three of the strongest upper class students to guard her. For once in Jade’s life she has food to eat and a safe place to live, but is the cost worth it. Most of the students a scared of her abilities and a few hate that someone from what they consider a second class family should have been given such gifts.

Jade has no training setting her at a disadvantage as she tries to learn to control her powers of sexually ensnaring people. Jade has to deal with mean girls, magical complications, growing feelings towards the strongest magical guys in the school, and last but not least fighting to find her way in a world that she had never been a part of.

While I really enjoyed many aspects of this book, the erotic scenes did little to advance the plot. They did raise the age level of who can read the story, but a less heavy hand could have gotten the point across leaving this book available to a younger group of readers. I enjoyed the magical aspects with all the difficulties that all young individuals can relate with.
